Alright, heres a fun one. My FLGS is doing a conversion/paint competition. We rolled a character and then you get to pick a 40k model you think matches the character in your head and then convert and paint it for the competition. I rolled:
>terrifying
>ferocious
>autoloader
>strike and fade
>artificer weapon
>toughened armor
>stealth assault
>deadly charge
Pretty cool stats. So I picked a Harlequin Solitaire. Now I need some help brainstorming how and what to do converting and then come up with a paint scheme. I have about three weeks to do this.

I really like how he looks, but, the only thing I would change is the way the green plasma/acid/whatever is in those tubes look. I would give them a white glow to them.

It's looking sick so far, and yeah, I would personally leave it the way it is. Personally, I don't like pupils at all in minis. They look reeeeeeally bad almost all the time.

I bought some Plumber's 2-part epoxy, supposed to dry in 15 minutes. Cost me about $3.80 from the nearest Home Depot. I'm working with it tonight, and I'll post the results later today. If it's decent enough, I'm never buying Green stuff again.

Started putting together my Anvil Industries sisters, and now I'm trying to think of a paint scheme for them.
Originally I was thinking something simple, like leadbelcher with rakarth flesh robes, but now I'm thinking of something far more colorful, by making the robes ulthuan grey/white, and the armor silver glazed with red for a metallic red color, and using white scar and sepia to make white roses
Any thoughts on alternative color schemes? Most of my army has red/white/silver/brown colors

How do/did you get over the feeling of failing to progress?

I want to get better at painting and using techniques like highlighting, blending, shading and other but I realise that what I start out doing will look like shit.

Maybe if I used cheaper models (Like Nolzurs or Reaper) it wouldn't feel so bad. Nobody wants to ruin a $50+ model with a shitty paint job.

What are the do's and don'ts of priming?
I've primed plenty and am familiar with the basics but wasn't sure if I was doing it good enough.
Like, how to tell if something is overprimed or underprimed.
>>
>>65136783
>Overprimed
Detail is fucked
>Underprimed
Still some plastic visible
>>
>>65136783
>overprimed
Loss of detail, primer pooling in recesses or leaving oval/roundish outlines on flat surfaces where the liquid gathered and then stretched away from after drying out and shrinking.
>underpriming
Not an issue unless you want to leave the primer as a basecoat or planning to wash over it (i.e. using cassadora over corax white to get nice yellow). As long as there are enough primer particles on the mini for the paint to stick, light spray with the plastic still visible is perfectly okay.

The main point of primer is to let paint adhere to the surface. That can be achieved with a light spray, yes. Precisely how light depends on the paints and primer in question.

Right arm I think will be one of the spindly knife arms from the Talos kit and the left arm the auto pistol Escher arm. Probably point down so it looks like she's holding it by her side. Not in combat be prepared for it.

Do you think an auto pistol might be a bit too low-tier for a bitch that looks like this though?

Welp, I'm fucked then. I'm going to try and fix it by adding some greenstuff over it and make it look like a set of robes over the armor, but under the pauldrons. The area that's messed up isn't large, but it's right on the chest of my armored Lich.

>>65132235
Also, update on the Plumber's Epoxy. It's honestly not bad stuff, except that it's really not joking when it says it dries in 15 minutes, so you've got to work fast with it. Also, the dried consistency is somewhat like hardened ceramic clay, except you can cut it like Plastic sprue, and if you hit it with a file, it comes off like powder. It's also stiff enough to make Pewter look like rubber. It also doesn't take on textures very well, so doing something like hair or fur would be impossible, but when dry it sands down very smooth, so it's fine for things like metal or cloth if you're patient enough to add details using a file, dremel, and knife after it's dried.
I'm going to try it again, this time mixing it with a polymer clay. Hopefully that should add some malleability, extend the time it takes to dry, and make it less stiff.
Overall, if it does work, it's still way cheaper than current Model Geenstuff and greenstuff alternatives.

Was the bronze paint actually a primer or just paint?

One of the qualities of a proper primer is that it promotes adhesion of the subsequent layer.
>>

>>Overprimed
>Detail is fucked

Good primers shrink making overpriming extremely difficult.

Underpriming isn't a thing.

The only real fuck up you can do with priming is be much too far away or be priming in very high humidity. This leaves an overly rough texture on the model.

It's my go to primer. I hardly ever use it anymore since i've transitioned to primarily using airbrush, but it's better than airbrush in the sense that it's proper primer, meaning it has chemicals in it which actually bond the paint to the surface of the model, making it harder to scratch off.

Can anyone recommend some 1/72 or 1/76 kits of modern military ground vehicles, preferably ones that are complicated and or have lots of potential for scratch building (I like fixing fucked up things).

Here's a picture I took today for tax

Painting terrain is the one thing those shitty paints you get from wal mart are good for. Base with a spray can and go to town.

>>65151169
I've had poor experiences.

>>65150762
You can paint over it generally without full coverage, I always used it with airbrush though,
>>
>>65150762
It always looks that fucked for me. Just make sure you let it dry enough (24 hour MINIMUM) and it should take a basecoat no problem.

The traditional way to do it would be to use aluminum foil; if you have an airbrush there's some alcohol based metallic paints on the market that perform well too (the ones by AK and Vallejo are the ones coming to mind off the top of my head).

Another angle. Thanks
>>
>>65152920
Would you run a wash over that to bring out the recesses? Also if I fuck up is there a way to remove this without the model being completely fucked?
>>
>>65153095
Enamel washes. After basing the model gloss varnish it and let that dry. After that you can use enamel washes like AK interactive's. The gloss varnish makes them flow really well into the recesses and you can use thinner to remove any part you messed up.

Look up a couple videos on plane models on youtube for more details
>>
>>65153095
I'm sure you could weather it afterwards; I personally have never done it, so I don't know how reversible it is (I would suspect not very; it involves coating everything in a pressure sensetive glue).

Why did past-me buy flow medium?

Isn't water enough?
>>
>>65154532
not if you want smoother coats and better blending
>>
>>65154561
Is that why my attempt at wet-blending looks like I didn't thin my paint enough even though it was super watery?
>>
>>65154561
>>65154608
flow medium will make paint look thinner than it is sometimes.
>>
>>65151917
I took one of the Sluggas from the Stormboyz kit (the one thats attached to a jet pack control thing that attaches to the actual rokkit) and filed off the back bit, slapped a blast shield onto the front of it and then attached rokkits to it. It fits perfectly along side the actual Tank busta model with similar gun. Later Tomorrow I'll dig him out of the boyz box and post a few pics of my boys.

Yeah but I was just using water to thin it.

I moved my paint to droppers, I probably used flow medium to get more paint out. But then I also got roasted for not thinning enough when I posted my Cadre Fireblade so it probably wasn't too much

Let me preface that this is great work, I love the colors and the props and concept and I understand the limitations you have with the model, but damn that posing is awkward.
The arm is too bent, looks unnatural and turns the model to face the wrong way, the wrist position is wrong for how it holds the pipe and the actual pipe holding is badly hoverhanding. It's a shame you didn't cut and customize because its letting down otherwise great work.
>>
>>65155592
So far so good. Toss on some spikes and chain mail. I would've used a chaos backpack though.

Is there even a point to magnetizing a Devilfish/Hammerhead/Skyray?

I doubt those specific bits are easy to come by. eBay seems to sell portions and fragments of the loadout-specific pieces for way more than is reasonable. I'm not going to pay half the cost of a model for 1/6th the plastic

I mean I'm going to magentize a Hammerhead just because it can fit different guns, but as for magnetizing a Devilfish to BE a Hammerhead, it just seems like a headache for no reason.
>>
>>65155826
Yeah the brown/red should be more saturated or darker.
>>
>>65155917

Why are girls so much better at painting?
>>
>>65156110
Practice on their face with makeup, and on their nails
>>
>>65156110
Because the girls in the hobby usually care more about painting their dudes where as tons of guys are just in it to wargame. I also think girls are more willing to use a bunch of high saturation colors.
>>
>>65156110
there is a lot of overlap between 'crafting' and 'hobby' related knowledge.

Interestingly enough women tend to see more colors. That's why women refer to a color 15 men would call red with 6 different names.

But yeah, I guess the ones that get into it, get into it mostly for the creative side and not for gaming.
>>
Painting spindel drones.
Trying out the alpha legion glaze technique and I like it.
Blinking lights to come.
>>
>>65156347
Women are less likely to be colorblind, but most people can be trained to see colors better. Women tend to be exposed to hobbies, professions, and habits that deal with lots of color differentiation. So whatever advantage they possibly have at birth is further increased by how they're raised.
>>
>>65156576
Plus boys more or less get called fags for getting into the hobbies that girls are encouraged to get into, so boys are conditioned to be men who aren't supposed to care about it.
>>
>>65156576
>>65156624
it's also really a thing though. Women are better at discerning between different shades of colors then men.

Some people on /tg/ might recognise my orange and grey knights, which I've posted repeatedly with my 3D printed warhounds.

I made major progress on my second Questoris Knight, driven by the fact my Castigator is now officially in the mail.

Not much left to do, just have to finish his base, do decals, paint 2 more weapons, etc.

Very excited for the second one to be finished.
