this is as good as I can do. lighting in my place is rlly bad and my desk lamp isn't bright enough
>>
>>64556949
That's already much better, what colour are the Grey/white bits? It feels like you haven't done anything with that "main" colour of yours and that's what is making it lacking.
If you've got some extra hands with different weapons etc, try and layer/highlight just that bit with a few lighter whites, and another with a slightly yellowier or creamier, maybe a bone colour of some sort. See which one looks better to you and try on one of the marines. Getting some more bright contrast will do a lot, as will the move away from the whitey-grey base colour.
>>
>>64556949
>>64557181
And to expand on that, see how hard it is in these images to differentiate the colour of the grey body and the metallic coloured bits of the guns/shoulders from the base colour? You want there to be more contrast so that they are clearly distinct colours despite the direction of light you could have coming onto the table.
Also some washes onto the recesses will help somewhat, but are unlikely to create sufficient contrast between the base and the metal.
>>
Gotta strip primer off my Johnny. Simple Green is 10 bucks cheaper and 2 days closer than Super Clean. Worth it?
>>

The light grey bits are a mix of Vallejo Sea Grey and Ivory to lighten it. Ill give it a go and maybe also try to use a silver metallic for edge highlights. thx for advice

>totally new to miniatures

Is there some secret place where people buy fantasy minis? I quick google search for minis shows a couple of places like reaper and dark sword, but I find their options limited.

I'm kinda jonesing for a female gnome bard. There's a few on reaper but nothing on other places.

What am I missing?

>>

Sometimes when I'm looking for something particular I'll use google image search. Try something like "28mm female gnome bard" and see what you end up with.

You may also just want to search for a female gnome, then attach an instrument to her somewhere. Reaper sells all kinds of conversion bits and if you don't like those, use the image search to sniff around until you find something you like.

>Gotta strip primer off my Johnny.

Your Johnny is supposed to be made of lead alloy (unless it's a recast) anon. Other than expense and risk to you personally, you need not hold back. Got any acetone handy?
>>
>>64557350
No, simple green is essentially worthless for stripping paint since a couple years ago when they apparently reformulated. I used it for a few years to good results, and then suddenly I could leave minis in it for weeks and weeks and it would do next to nothing. Avoid.
>>

Emperor's Teeth, anon! I don't understand how you can say this with a straight face.

Reaper's factory is about 15 miles from here. I stopped by one time, and since they were slow, one of the ladz took me on a little tour of their operation.

They crank out so much plastic there it's not even funny.

There were rows upon rows of pegs covering the walls of the company store (the front part of the building is a shop, while the back is the factory/warehouse/distribution center) with thousands of different designs - almost all of them fantasy. They even had some old metal stuff and a corner tucked away in the back just for CAV miniatures.

Maybe my access to all this makes me see it differently, but if I was willing to settle for Bones quality (Citadel has me spoiled), I'm certain I could find whatever fantasy models I wanted from Reaper.

>>
>>64558893
Why would he have to settle for Bones? Is Reaper not selling pewter versions anymore?
>>
>>64558979
Nah they still do. If that's the Denton factory, they'll usually just let you in the back to browse fully from the pewter stuff if you ask nice
>>
>>64558979
>Why would he have to settle for Bones? Is Reaper not selling pewter versions anymore?

I'm not sure what the deciding factor is.

Their plant cranks out a shit-ton of Bones plastic, and *most* of the models available for sale in the company store are such. When I go to other shops like Common Ground Games in Dallas, they also have a pretty good selection of the Bones plastic, including some of the larger, more impressive models.

There are still metal ones, though, including many sculpted by Julie Guthrie (how has this woman not gone blind over the 40+ years she's been sculpting?!?). I just don't know how Reaper plans and distributes those, as I rarely see them in the other shops around here - just the plastic stuff mostly.

>>
>>64556353
The last six months have been a crazy improvement for me and my painting skills. Like jeez where do I even start.
First I’ve worked a ton on developing my airbrushing skills. I’ve made some really killer, subtle gradients particularly on some titans I painted recently for Titanicus.
Second, I’ve started using oil washes, which are simply fantastic and rich. Big change there.
Third, I’ve learned how to paint eye lenses better. I finished some Sons of Horus Reavers last week and I think they’re some of my finest models.

aside from the basing and maybe redoing the claws/spikes to tidy them up a bit I think the patriarch is done.
Looking at him next to the magus I really don't like how muted the scheme looks, especially the almost grey skin, think it's time to tweak the regular cultist scheme a bit,

How good are Mr. Hobby supermetallics are? I don't have access to valejo liquid gold and silver, but have great range of mr. hobby paints at my local store. I think the Arvus had weapons mounted on the wings or on the chin (where you've got the scanner).

the scanner comes already in place, its not a distinct part, its part of the two halfs of the hull. I'm not sure where I'm going to get appropiate mutlilasers, but I wonder if I could put two autocannons, one under each wing, and say they are twin linked?

They're trivial to sculpt from plasticard. The weapon tip can be made from plastic tubing in a few seconds. Otherwise, ask IG players. They come in heavy weapon kits, sentinels, and Chimera-based kits.
>>
After reading Slaves to Darkness, I'm toying with the idea of making a Kill Team consisting of the descendants of Cthonian gangers (counts as Scouts), led by a truescaled Black Legion Marine (counts as Primaris Reiver)
But I'm having trouble finding appropriate humans to use. The Necromunda gangs are great but they don't quite capture the underworld gangster feel I'm after, and I think they might be a little large. Any suggestions for partially robed, tough looking humans are appreciated. I'll probably sculpt furs and whatnot

you could look at your models in a really dark room...

If you want the glowing eyes to pop like that you have to keep the model overall darker. The greys you got there are too bright for that if you really want to capture the mood.
And dot the eyes with yellow.
>>
>>64566891
And your paints either need to be thinned, or are too thinned.
Nothing in between!

You missed out a bit. Back around 2008-ish there were a ton of small, boutique, miniatures companies churning out stuff like that. Most of them have since gone out of business, alas.

Question:
With the advent of the new CSM models, I have decided to reboot my chaos forces with Crimson Slaughter, and I was wondering what the most efficient way to paint them would be. Should I paint the red first and then paint the gold trim, or the opposite and basically drybrush all the trim without having to worry about being neat and then fill in the red? I have an airbrush, which makes me thing I should do the red. Ultimately, I'm going for speed and efficiency so long as my basic models don't look like ass.
>>
>>64572066

Taking my painted Tau and making them unpainted Tau.

Considering putting together a few tests of basing techniques to make up my mind whether I'm just going to buy GW's texture paint or not (i like the look of the GW effect but its kinda expensive so if I can get a similar look without it I will)

Alright fluff/modeling question for my conversion sisters /mydudes/ army I'm working on right now.

Deaths head helms for dominions, reflecting their nature as Death seekers who willingly martyr themselves to destroy the enemy. Celestians with normal helms.

Or

Dominions with normal helms, Celestians with Deaths head helms representing their lethality and as a mark of their elite status within the Order.

Which seems better and more appropriate? Been making the helms today and I couldn't decide which way I like better. For the record I differentiate different types of sister by head. Bare for Battle sister, hooded Retributors, mini iron halo type thing for Canoness. Only problem I'm having is this choice for Celestians and Dominions. I'd really appreciate ya'lls imput.

Also, just wanted to say thank you to the anons who replied to my question about the storm bolter last thread. Think I've got it figured out, should know by tonight if it will work or not, but if it doesn't at least I have a plan c now, so thanks for your help with plan b and c.

It's a yes from me.

You can get kettle helmets from milriton. You could also look into using great helmets without crests on your regular joes. I can't vouch for Eccentric, as I have no first hand experience, but the helmets look pretty solid to me at least.
If you don't mind using 3rd party stuff you could also use Fireforge men at arms and just put cadian arms onto those. They'd make nice feudal world IG too.

Yes; injection molds get sprayed with a mold release, which stays on the plastic. Sometimes it's not a problem, sometimes it ruins paintjobs. Best to get some soap & water on your runners before you assemble just in case.
>>
>>64573645

We talked about Prince August Warzone models last thread, too. If you're looking specifically for that kind of thing - say to add spice to your game of Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel, for example - they're exactly the right size.

Consider that these Imperial Trenchers are supposed to be "only" human. Citadel's older beekees are - for most folks - too small compared to today's 21st-century Space Marines, but the Trenchers are taller.

Newfag to miniatures.

My first set of miniatures comes in today. Read not to skimp out on a good cutter and hobby knife. I'm looking at the online shop for a local mom & pop hobby store. Some cutters go upwards of $40 and some as low as $7. Would something in the $15-20 range by acceptable? As for knife, is your regular old x-acto from a office supply store fine?

Also, modeling glue or super glue? Cant wait til I get home and get started.
>>
Has anyone here tried spraying over the primer on the Wizkids unpainted minis? I hate that they're primed in white and would rather just throw some black primer on top, but I'm concerned that the added layer of primer would wash out a lot of the details.
>>
>>64574784
I wouldn't, ABS is temperamental anyway
>>
>>64574779
Go for an affordable cutter, then upgrade down the road if you really get into the hobby. An x-acto knife is perfect for what you'll need it for. I'm assuming what you're referring to as modeling glue is plastic cement? That's for bonding plastic to plastic, super glue is for metal and resin.
>>
>>64573756
>candy coats
If I was doing old school 1KS (which is how I would paint them), I would, but crimson slaughter are a dark matte red with gold trim.

Speaking of spraying metallics, what metallics should I use in an airbrush? I'm afraid to use GW because of the metal flakes

>>
>>64574990
Then yes. If you're doing plastic stuff, use plastic glue. It'll be a stronger bond than super glue because the chemical of the plastic glue actually melts & welds the plastic together. Just be careful not to let it get anywhere it's not supposed to be, because it'll melt the plastic and potentially ruin the model.

So I got a box full of these guys sitting here, and I'd like to try and replicate the dirty yellow on their coats. Any suggestions on how best to do that? Never really worked with yellows much.

Okay, this is my attempt to paint Metalica Kastelan robots. I've followed the instuctions of the GW painting book, but I still think it has ended up too bright. Also, I can't still paint straight lines, much less add the edges without dirtying other parts of the model. I'm concerned that every time I seem to get a painting technique right, I manage to fuck up something else. Any opinions on this?
>>
>>64577058
Secret Weapon Blue Wash or Sapphire Wash.
I've not tried it though
>>
>>64577628
Just keep at it. White is notoriously difficult to paint well, and was probably a bad colour to choose. It can also be easier to paint a model if you do it in several pieces and THEN assemble it. But just keep at it. Few people started off really good.
>>
>>64577742
>It can also be easier to paint a model if you do it in several pieces and THEN assemble it.
I've heard different opinions about that on /tg/. What exactly are the pros and cons of each?
>>
I really hate shading. Could I spray my shade on with my airbrush and then just slowly block it back in with a layer paint to get it done more cleanly?
>>
>>64577782
Sub assemblies are always preferable if it doesn't leave a seam when assembling, if it means you can handle the model more easily. There isn't really a discussion.
>>
>>64577869
What do you mean? Likely would just result in a glaze which doesn't sound like what you're after.

>>
I need some robed dudes to convert some inquisition acolytes but GW doesn't seem to sell any that quite fit what I'm looking for.
and yes I've looked at empire flagellants but they're a bit too shabby-looking imo
>>
>>64577628
you accidentally mixed some red with the white, more notably at the left robot's left leg, ad the knee and upper leg.
>>
>>64577910
Sorry. I always fuck up doing recess shades, so I tried doing a whole model wash, but that always makes the model have some brush strokes in the shade that I can hide with the layer paint, and I was curious if doing the whole model wash but with the airbrush would work better.
>>
>>64578027
I know, that's my fault. I thought it was dry enough to cover it with white, and it ended up mixing, and the following coats did not cover the red completely.
>>
>>64577782
In sub assemblies it makes each part much easier to paint. The only downsides are seams from assembling the pieces after painting (not usually an issue if it's an arm or backpack) and that you'll need to attach them to something to make handling easier whilst you paint.
>>
>>64577921

Depends on the model, imo.
Some still you can get away with a full assembly.
As others stated above. Sub assemblies are best if the parts don't leave seams when put together.
Arms, heads, riders, maybe a base piece that's in the way.
Example here, and my /wip/ post for the day: got a hunch of gsc characters, two squads of jackals, Some acolytes. I like to paint the heads seperated and for the jackals leaving an arm off makes. It easier to get at their chest and the like

There's a trick to working with White - and that is that you don't really use white except for in the end.
Using GW paints, I recommend starting with Ulthuan grey as the overall coat, taking a small brush with Nuln oil wash and shading in the recesses. Once dry, do an Edge-highlight of Skull White to make it appear as a whiter color.

Possibly, but not the Enlightened themselves. I started painting the army around last summer yes, but I'm using Acolytes as all 3 Tzaangor types so you probably saw the first unbased batch I was trying to get the scheme just right.

I took breaks and there was a fair amount of bulk, detailed models and it took me a while to get the basing formula right. I'm near the end of the whole thing though, can't wait.

The tiles are just cut up pieces of GW boxes (with the glossy printed side up). Prime white, then put a layer of white paint with vallejo retarder medium in it (about 2:1), fairly thickly, then paint lines of gray and feather it into the wet paint with a super soft brush. Repeat with thinner lines of black, then paint the crevices and cracks Nuln Oil. Then just a gloss varnish spray. Hope that helps!

>>64579230
Could you specify more concerning the transitions? And I agree regarding the highlights, might go back on the linothorax.
>>
>>64579206
I did. Primed it with corax white, then a coat of rakarth flesh, then the agrax earthshade, then pallid whych flesh. just like the manual said.
>>
>>64577234
It might be shit but the recipe I use is
Zandri dust > ushabti bone > seraphim sepia > screaming skull
>>
>>64579264
Thank you very much. The army's painted to the best skill I can muster and as such it takes me a long time to make them, but I'm quite happy with the cel-shaded look. Comes from religiously going over the recesses and edges with washes. I will clean up the transitions yes, I've done .. 34 acolytes so far so I have mucked a few up on that part.
>>
>>64579374
Sometimes the manuals may meme you into using more paints than you actually need. Sprayed white looks much better and smoother than brushed on white, especially if you're a beginner. You still need to recess shade it tho.

ok, so i've been fucking around painting slowly.

tl;dr I genuinely want to get good, I'm looking for input and advice. This is the latest thing I've painted.

I tried making the lines on the orb attached to his hip glow, but it did not turn out very nice, I first did a consistent line, then watered down and went around it with the watered down paint, what should I have done?
>>
>>64579591
Also, I'm finding it somewhat hard to get consistent gold/silver metal and it takes so many layers.

Would it be a better idea if i did a base coat of gray/yellow before applying silver/gold?
>>
>>64579591
Ehhh, that blue on the crossbow makes it look like a plastic toy, maybe paint it like wood instead? The feathers on the birb could look more interesting with a drybrush of light grey. The white on the undercloak is kinda dodgy, especially around the edges.
Overall looks nice and clean though. You seem to have the basics done, maybe try something fancier on your next dude, like wet blending or layering?
>>
>>64579627
>>64579591
Dry brush for glow, or go with an airbrush. OSL takes a lot of work to get right and you need to actually understand light and colour to make it not look stupid.
As for gold and silver, it's because you're using shitty paints, and probably thinning metallics with water. Thin with iridescent medium, or a drop (and I mean a drop) of flow aid. If you want to use the shitty paints, or can't find better ones, base coat with grey or black for silvers, and brown for golds.
Now on to good metallics to use. GW's retributor gold or whatever it's called is the best gold I've used, and all their others are shit. For silver any either vallejo model air silver, aluminium or chrome. All three look identical to me so pick whatever. I hear scale 75 makes very good metals but I haven't ordered any to try as it's winter.
>>
>>64579627
You may be thinning them too much. Metallics don't really need much water.
>>
>>64579794

>>64579772
>>64579794
Oh god, I found the problem then, I've been thinning them. ruined a mini with thick paint, and It's scared me ever since.

I'll search for those the next time I visit a game store, atm I'm using valejo Silver and citadel auric gold(honestly, just went after what sounded better since I'm a noob)
As for air brushing, I just find it relaxing working on projects a bit at a time, main reason I got into it. Maybe I'll get into it later down the line when I master all the basics.

Thanks a lot for the responses!

>>64579300
Rather than having your colours be dark blue shadow, blue midtone, light blue highlight, try changing the hue slightly. Like a more violet shadow for a blue midtone, or a more cyan highlight. Adds more depth and visual interest.
>>
>>64579985
Are you speaking of blends? The helmet is very flat now, I could redo it. Would drakenhof nightshade work for blues? Currently use watered-down nuln oil.
>>
>>64580070
Hes saying you should shift from purple to cyan through blue. I don't know if it will work, and nuln oil works fine for dark blues.
>>
>>64569710
Plasma recipe?
>>
>>64580070
You don't need to redo it or anything, just something to keep in mind for future stuff. It mainly works on the principle of contrasting colours and what not. You might have heard of people using incubi darkness as a deep recess shade for red to get contrast. Black shades can desaturate your mini, while using different colours can be more interesting.

Purple would work for blues, yes. If it ever ends up too stark, you can always go back over with a glaze to sort of color correct things too.

Just experiment with stuff really. Model you posted is perfectly fine, so I was just trying think of some more interesting things you could try.

So this is my first sanguinary guard. I'm not very satisfied with it and hope I could get some tips on how to improve the model. It's mostly done aside from a few touch ups I have to make.

The things that I hate the most about it are how I fucked up the blood vials all over the model and they ended up looking awful.

Honestly don't worry about any of that. All those things involve blending two of which on a very small scale and the thing about blending is, your first model looks like shit, and your tenth model looks 10 times better. It just takes lots of practice, and you're clearly going towards being a solid painter. You'll just get there with practice. Watch some more tutorials, specifically on blending and keep practicing.

To answer OP's curiosity. Practice has made me better at a good amount of things - this year in general I have been churning out hundreds more models than I usually do - chiefly, my main improvements have been in painting faces and flames. Looking at a model I painted a year and two days ago exactly I see where I've improved in shading and doing ginger hair since then.
