Needs someone to direct its kobolds, who are well-meaning and loyal to a fault, but also extremely incompetent, and the dragon has a lot it needs to do and can't keep an eye on them all day.

I recall reading a book that was along the lines of a princess getting tired of the whole princess life and running away. She ends up being voluntarily kidnapped by a dragon and basically works as his/her maid (I remember there being a female dragon, but I don't remember if her's was it). She had some friend who was another princess working for her dragon's dragon friend and there was some stone prince around.

Anyway, princesses are nice as assistants. They've got tiny little human hands that are good for fine manipulation and they're usually smarter than kobolds and in fairer condition than the average human slave.

The dragon is more interested in collecting people than treasure. His lair is almost a mansion where famous bards play their music, the greatest philosophers debate, master craftsmen engrave the walls and expand the lair, and the politically influencial discuss matters of politics. The lair is a neutral ground where great works are made and preserved, and all members are privately invited to his lair and welcome to leave if they so desire. The dragon has taken the princess as another addition to his lair due to her influence and famous beauty.

The King's ancestor made a deal with the dragon to help defend the land from invaders, in return the dragon gets some gold every year.
It's been 200 years since the last invasion (HOLY SHIT you guys they have a DRAGON let's invade somewhere else...) and the dragon went to sleep on his huge pile of gold 150 years ago.
Woke up expecting to be buried in new gold, found out he hadn't been paid in about 140 years, got irate.

The royal dynasty is the distant descendants of powerful magicians, gods or other powerful supernatural beings. Some of the ancestral powers are still hidden in them, although they cannot or don't know how to use it. But the dragon can take these powers for itself by eating someone from the royal family, performing a ritual or something.
Or it's just a way to take revenge on the ancestors of the family for something.

The Princess was locked in a tower by her evil stepmother who wishes her heir to inherit instead of the rightful princess. The dragon, was long ago spared from death by the late King. Feeling indebted to his long time friend he steals the Princess from her tower & trains her in statecraft & war in the homes that she may retake her father’s throne

I have been working on a setting in which dragons do not have differing alignments based on color. Instead, they have an instinctual desire for a concept that differs based on their color. This means they will seek certain people or items, or act a certain way based upon this drive.

Kidnapping the princess can be a direct or indirect means of fulfilling this instinctual drive.

(Color/drive is mostly arbitrary. That is, they are not based on any official lore, so you can feel free to change them as you see fit.)

>Red: might
Items: weapons of war, magic items with damage-dealing spells
People: warriors invited for gladiatorial combat, powerful fighters that were subdued and locked away, trainers
Notes: often seek fights to enjoy a scrape (nonlethal or not) or show off its strength

>Gold: knowledge
Items: ancient tomes (magical or not), unique tools, blueprints
People: sages and philosophers
Notes: like to explore ruins; willing to pay for tales of distant lands

>Green: precious metals and stones
Items: raw ores, jeweled items, various currencies
People: slaves for mining
Notes: willing to trade non-bejeweled magic items for jewels valued at less than market value of the magic item

>Blue: beauty
Items: exquisitely crafted art, musical instruments
People: beautiful people (regardless of station), talented musicians and craftsmen
Notes: rarely ransoms; settles in locations with gorgeous views

>Black: domination
Items: symbols of conquest/ownership, war trophies, banners
People: servants, ransom victims
Notes: stubbornly honorable, willing to give rides ONLY to those that have defeated it (rare because fights usually result in the death of one of the parties)

>Silver: magic
Items: scrolls, magic trinkets, enchanted weapons, wands, etc
People: spellcasters, magic animals
Notes: collects magic for its own sake and might not personally know a single spell

>The king hired the Dragon to kidnap the princess as a ploy to get her married off to a hero.
>He didn't kidnap her. They've been pen pals for years and she's visiting on her own volition, but the king does not approve so he made up the kidnaping to recruit adventurers to get her back (and off the dragon)
>once you go drak you never go back
>that stuck up bitch stole the dragon's man and is going to pay for it
>Look, it was just a job. The dark wizard wanted a princess and paid really well.
>What princess? The king doesn't have any daughters. The whole thing is just a rumor started by a bored dragon to lure adventurers to it's lair.

Dragons are sinful beasts and it will do lustful things to her. But that's how I do dragons, embodiments of sin
>Wrathful
Dragons are quick to anger and slow to forget their anger
>Prideful
Dragons will never willingly submit to another, this goes so far that dragons reproduce via rape, two dragons will fight for dominance with the winner taking the loser by force even though they both want the same thing
>Greedy
Dragons desire wealth and displays of wealth even though they rarely if ever use them, this desire for wealth is based on what others desire, so while gold and gems are important to them, so are ancient artifacts and even people of importance and regard who they take as servants and/or concubines
>>
>>64557192
pt. 2
>Gluttonous
Dragons can consume more than their weight in food in a single meal, their stomach expanding to fit the food, while they will eat practically any food they desire high quality food and tribute they demand may include feasts with decadent food and dozens of barrels of expensive wine.
>Slothful
Unless spurred into action dragons have little desire to seek out action, a calmed dragon assured of his own superiority, with his hunger, thirst, and lust slaked may sleep for centuries at a time.
>Lustful
Dragons are extremely lustful, while they don't find other beings sexually attractive they view the value of partners based on their value to others, thus their preference with partners tends to be deities>dragons>wealthy and powerful mortals>regular mortals>animals. Furthermore they can breed with pretty much anything, while with mortals this leads to hordes of half dragons with slightly diminished desires of their parents, when copulating with beasts the progeny are mindless animals killing, raping, and eating (not necessarily in that order) anything they can find until they are killed themselves.
>Envious
Dragons view themselves against others, a dragon doesn't care about having wealth as much about having the most wealth, a dragon with 500 gold coins in a land where the next richest person has 50 is more content than a dragon with 50 million gold coins while a nearby emperor has 60 million in his treasury.

The dragon is the princess' uncle. The princess is also a dragon. The entire royal blood line is dragons disguised as humans. They use the whole 'kidnapped by a dragon' routine as a ruse to find strong spouses.

It's an elaborate ruse set up by the King and his ancestor's secret ally, the Dragon.
As the kingdom is small with a relatively weak army, the King has the Dragon 'kidnap' the Princess every so often so that his chosen hero can go and "rescue" her in a harrowing escape.
Naturally, the stories of this get around and, with some extra spinning, you have a situation where no other kingdom would want to conquer the hunting grounds of a 'ferocious ancient dragon', while simultaneously the Kingdom can remain self-reliant off their 'valiant hero'.
The dragon is also like an aunt to the Princess and they enjoy their time gossiping and reading.

She was saved but horribly disfigured. To the point the king didn't want her back and felt better saying she had died. The party took her with them to a mage brotherhood and left her there so they could take care of her for a few years.
This started several plotlines about the party doing oddjobs for the mages as repayment and to get them to help teach her spells.
Once she had made a recovery, her 21st birthday rolled around. The party asked her if there was anything she wanted for her birthday.
She replied: "To slay my father with my own hands."

Because with the princess out of the way, her younger sister is next in line for the throne. Said younger sister favors looser anti-trust restrictions and lower taxes for corporations, and the dragon has invested heavily in a number of businesses that are seeing him a tidy profit, and would benefit from these changes being made into law, especally as he is making inroads into monopolizing the banking industry and gaining total control over the kingdom's wealth,

A princess is like kobe beef but as a human, pampered and treated very well, making her flesh soft, tender, succulent when cooked properly. The dragon will treat her kindly at first, offering her fatty foods and snacks, and giving her a wonderful, comfortable room in its lair before eventually eating her.

Dragons like to eat Princes too, but they have a pesky habit of wielding magic swords or commanding armies, so dragons don't go after them quite as often.

Political leverage to ensure fealty.
The dragon has seen how numerous the small species have become, heard too many tales of dragons slain for their hoards.
The dragon now “hoards” kingdoms.
The princesses are trained, educated and indoctrinated (albeit in a subtle way).
Subsequently, they are freed, to be married to an approved Match that favours the kingdom and by extension the dragon.
They become a benigesserat like group, guiding the kingdoms from within, ensuring the dragons will is followed regarding bloodlines (the dragon emperor is fond of his chosen and is trying to breed in traits like a lord with his hounds.).
They also watch for sedition and quietly report to their true king.

I can't tell if you're taking the piss or not because many people despised the film. I really liked it. True it had almost nothing to do with the games but the games at that point were mostly just a Stalin impersonator going from left to right and jumping on mushrooms to rescue a princess from a dragon/turtle and there's a limited amount that you can do with that.

But as a film it was pretty fun to watch. Certainly better than anything done by Uwe Boll.

Male dragons laugh off her mating calls and call her an abomination - several have tried to kill her. She's getting desperate. So she kidnaps a princess, figuring that could force some plot development, and that she can use the worthiest of the knights that arrive to start a clutch.

Only problem is, she's starting to fall for her prisoner. Stupid elves, and their singing, and unwavering kindness.
