Post angel butts.

Also, in a given setting:
What's the ideal wingspan-to-arm ratio?
How do halos work?
What's angel society like?
Under what circumstances can angels get lewd?
What quirks do they have?

>What's the ideal wingspan-to-arm ratio?
Well personally I'm a fan of big wings like your own pic, just because they look almost plausibly big enough to actually let the angel fly. My general rule of thumb would be that unfolded the wing should be at least twice as long as the angel is tall. If they're five feet they should have a 20+ foot wingspan.
>How do halos work?
A pretty large but very thin ring of incandescent golden-white light, it feels like turning your face towards the sun in summer, hot and bright enough that after a while it starts to get uncomfortable. It's not a physical object, it can't be touched by mortal hands. The more power the angel is drawing on the brighter it gets to the point where it will appear more like a ring of flame or even of lightning, so bright and so hot that to stand near the angel feels like standing next to an open furnace while looking straight into the sun.
>What is angel society like?
Very busy, significantly more hierarchical, giving respect or disrespect is taken a lot more seriously, angels don't eat and sleep so much as they take short rests and rejuvenate themselves. Roles are not based on physical traits since most of an angel's existence is incorporeal nor are they cultural, they arise and are erased as is necessitated by the divine plan, each angel always has an innate sense of what the creator needs them to be doing.
>Under what circumstances can angels get lewd?
Generally they are forbidden to do so at least with mortal beings, as the creation of semi-divine offspring with both full free will and divine powers can throw off the plan, angel-on-angel action is a co-mingling of selves which spontaneously creates another angel, this is generally never restricted because there's always a need for more angels, but angels are also much more careful about selecting partners because each partner keeps a portion of the other after they're done, relationships are monogamous and eternal. cont

>What quirks do they have?
Most all Angels except those who work exclusively in and amongst humans have some difficulty communicating with us, those are generally the angels who take bizarre forms made up of fire and eyes or animal parts or platonic shapes, they serve purposes in the divine plan that aren't very much related to humanity and as a result their shapes and speech and thought processes are difficult for humans to interact with. Human-like angels are generally those who's job it is to work with humans, guiding them, guarding them, saving their souls, etc. Their minds can translate the divine down into a context simple enough for them to communicate with humans and other mortal creatures, although their mortal vocabulary is too limited for them to explain stuff like the full divine plan to us, it would be like a human trying to explain quantum mechanics to a dog, the dog just doesn't have the capacity, nor is the level of communication sufficient. Angel personalities tend to be very fixed, and this trait or quirk extends to all divine or demonic immortals, their personality forms upon their creation and it sets that way, they aren't malleable in the same way mortal minds are, as a result they don't have full free will like humans because they are entirely beholden to a personality and mindset which will never significantly change. They tend to be very frank, if polite, there is no bullshitting or self-delusion with angels or demons, they are what they are and know from the moment of their conception their own true nature. Arguing something with an angel or demon would be very frustrating, they simply don't change their minds about things.

This thread is a neat read: https://worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/2886/how-big-would-a-pair-of-wings-need-to-be-to-allow-an-adult-human-to-fly-in-a-giv

Evidently, given optimal conditions, you wouldn't need an obscenely large wingspan like your intuition might have you believe. Assuming angels are actually affected by physics, have hollow bones, are already slim, and maybe have some help from the big Gravity, one with the height and build of a fit human could reasonably get by with wingspans of about twelve to fifteen feet, significantly less if they're shorter. Haohi (in OP) is about 4'11", and just from eyeballing her wingspan, it seems about right (although I'd imagine that the armor has to be adding a lot unless it's some wonder material that's both light and tough).

That said, I don't know how much of this accounts for the muscle mass needed to actually use the wings, and what that skeletal and muscle structure would look like.

Divine Monarchy for themselves, they are all beholden to the King of Kings. They have no need for money or worldly possessions because each and every one of them exists for a higher and specific purpose which fulfills them in a way materialistic luxury never would. They probably would have some level of disapproval for any political system that doesn't explicitly acknowledge and glorify the Creator, yet they also will all recognize the necessity for human civilizations to exercise their free will and govern themselves as they see fit, since in the end all of them will be judged after death anyways whatever their political leanings.
>>64526208
Size sounds about right but yeah the physical structure of an angel would have to be somewhat radically different from that of a human and involve new and massive muscle groups for it to work. I don't need that much realism though, just enough for plausibility, plus I find big wings aesthetically pleasing big wings are better for curling up into, there's plenty of extra floof.

Well from what I can observe with a cursory glance, the proportions are closer to what would generally be considered normal, rather than oversized or undersized or super-emphasized, anatomy looks pretty good, cloth looks pretty good, her chin isn't super pointy like a lot of anime styles seem to do, nor does she have supersized doll like eyes.

I kind of like this angle, but it's also really depressing. Imagine having a puppy, bright and cheerful and loving, maybe a little naughty but harmlessly so, and watching it slowly turn hateful and bitter as its life goes on. Being a human-facing angel sounds like it really sucks.

Guardian

The soldier stood fast as another foe fell before his blade. How many was that now? A dozen? Two dozen? He had lost count long ago, and there were countless more to go.

He moved to the left, deftly dodging a scimitar that came arcing down as yet another enemy challenged his authority in that spot. This one, too, became yet another corpse as the soldier stepped forward and stabbed the exposed side, stopping his heart for good.

The soldier then took a moment and looked around. He noticed to his dismay that he was surrounded. Ten, twenty, maybe even fifty enemies all converged upon his position. He was cut off. He had no escape. He was exhausted.

His death was certain.

So he resolved to fight to the last. He asked his deity aloud, the one he and a few others in his unit would pay homage to, to send him the strength to take down as many of these enemies as he could before he fell too and joined his comrades.

Then, he readied his sword and prepared for the end.

He did not have to wait long. The first foe ran forward, yelling for blood and vengeance for his fellow men at arms as he charges the position that the soldier stood on. He thrust his sword forward, which was easily dodged of course, and immediately turned around for a follow up. It was sloppy, and easy to punish; the soldier did without hesitiation. Another one down.

A second came forward, this one a little more cautious than his friend, taking a few stabs from too far away. The nervousness in his eyes was obvious, so the soldier closed the gap and planted his sword straight through his throat. Nerves had no place on the battlefield.

Two more came forward, and as they did so, the crowd of enemies around him seemed to surge closer, sensing that victory was near. The soldier paid them no mind, his immediate focus was the two challengers before him. Each had a shield and a spear, and both were leveled at his head. One thrust forward and made the soldier drop to a knee to avoid having his eye skewered. The second anticipated this and thrust down to where the soldier's chest now rested

He had to immediately lunge forward to avoid impending death, and as he did so he grabbed the first spear and used it's shaft to deflect the second from retracting easily. He then turned around and returned his ill gotten gain to the gut of the enemy he took it from, causing the hapless hostile to fall onto the spear as the back dug into the dirt

His partner did not last much longer. He swung wide with his weapon and the soldier ducked underneath it with great ease. Then he perforated his windpipe, and his stomach for good measure

As the second spearman fell, the soldier heard an enemy approach from behind. He barely had time to turn around and raise his sword to deflect the blade that came for his heart. He was just able to force the edge off of his chest and into his left shoulder, an experience that brought incredible pain as he felt the strength in his arm fail

The assailant pressed his advantage and brought his blade around to bear upon the opposite leg, slicing the thigh and dropping the soldier to one knee. He laughed as he did so, and the platoon around them cheered as their foe lay beaten before them. But he was not done yet. The assailant then began to egg the crowd on, clearly relishing the glory he was about to receive. The soldier managed to use this distraction to stab his assailant's torso and rob him of his fifteen seconds of fame, but this action left his good leg far too extended to offer any support, and he fell on his side.

He heard the platoon surge forth, inevitably seizing the chance to remove this stubborn obstruction between them and their goal. He felt the ground shake as their armored footsteps ran towards his defenseless form to rid themselves of this hazard once and for all.

His injured arm did not respond to his brain's commands with anything except painful rejection, and his good leg was unmoving, having held his form aloft for far too long already. His good arm was pinned underneath his body, and his injured leg was just as temperamental as his arm.

He and everyone around him knew that his battle had just come to an end.

He lie there on the ground, the dirt going into his nose as he breathed what he thought would be his last. As he did, a smile slowly creeped across his face, as he accepted that he had done everything he could, that he fought well, and his final stand alone against overwhelming odds would be remembered by both friend and foe. He came to this realization and thanked his deity for allowing him this chance at glory, and only asked that his departure be as quick and painless as possible, given the circumstances. He closed his eyes, and awaited death.

That is, until he felt something (or someone?) land on the ground over the top of him. Immediately he heard the charge of the platoon stop dead in its tracks. He could have sworn that a few swords had dropped and hit the ground, noisily clattering in a way that was somehow heard over the sounds of the rest of the battlefield. At least one of the enemies had gasped in awe at whatever it was that had befallen them.

The soldier tried to open his eyes to see what exactly had caused them to stop cold, but before he could, whatever it was that was standing over him leapt off in some direction, causing a gust of wind to kick up more dirt and leaving the hapless soldier coughing up a dirt ball.

The awe struck silence gave way to screams of agony and horror as whatever it was that had arrived began slicing and dicing the enemies that had once been closing in on his helpless form. As soon as he finished hacking up the dirt, the soldier forced himself to roll off of his good arm and begin the slow, painful process of getting up.

Of course, whatever had befallen this platoon was still hacking it's own way through the crowd. The soldier heard the sounds of a warzone much closer than he would have liked. Enemy combatants were being massacred left and right by the sound of it, and he still had no idea who or what had come to his aid. He had had enough. He had to know his rescuer. He had to look upon his salvation. The soldier forced himself back on his knee and looked up.

There, he saw Her.

Standing among the enemy soldiers much as he had been doing a few minutes ago was perhaps the most beautiful woman the soldier had ever seen. Her cream colored skin showed absolutely no blemish of any kind, even the dirt and mud of the battlefield seemed to have no effect on staining it in any way. Her long hair, resemblant of the white sand that could be found on a tropical beach paradise, reached to the small of Her back, unbound yet never getting in Her way or allowing an enemy to grab hold of it; it almost seemed to flow in such a mesmerizing pattern of its own. Her eyes bore the color of a deep ocean blue, the kind of ocean that would bring a calmness to those who sailed upon it and that would bring even the most troubled of hearts to rest, that is if it wasnt for the fact that these same eyes were darting this way and that, each glance being followed by Her sword, every blow striking true, bolts of lightning in a storm of divine fury as She danced around the enemy with such grace and ferocity. Her face reflected the holy hurricane She was bringing to bear upon these unfortunate souls who dared cross her; She was an agent of retribution, delivered upon those who faced divine judgment and were found wanting.

She struck down two more enemies with blows so fast the mere mortal eye couldn't dare hope to keep up. As they fell, the soldier was able to behold Her in all Her glory as she spread her marble wings, each twice as long as her arms, feathered like an eagle's would be and without a single speck of imperfection to be found. As they extended to their full length, the enemy combatants could only back away in terror as She readied Her next strike.

The soldier realized newfound strength within his aching body as he beheld this Angel before him. He reached for his dropped sword, retrieved it and began to stand up. His leg protested vehemently, but he did not care. This Angel had come for him, of this he was certain.

He did not have to wait long. She leapt forth, one beat of Her massive wings propelling her faster than any dragon ever could. In a flash, She was on the other side of the crowd, Her sword already retracted from another victim as he crumpled in a heap before Her. The soldier took this time to glance around again and count how many people were still standing in this crowd. Counting himself, he could see ten active combatants, The Angel, and at least thirty corpses. Not a sound escaped their lips, each one was killed instantly by the blows they'd received from Her. She even took the time to finish the foes the soldier had struck down but not killed outright, as he simply didnt have a chance to in the melee.

Ten. She immediately turned to the closest enemy and struck him down instantaneously with an attack to the heart. Dead.

Nine. His closest comrade attempted to hit Her while She was attacking him, but She deftly parried his attack with Her own rapier and slit his throat with such force his jugular was cut. Dead.

Eight. She dashed past this falling cadaver, Her wings creating another windgust with the sheer power behind them and impaled the skull of an enemy further behind it. Dead.

Seven. Two assailants beset Her from either side, swinging massive halberds down upon Her. She jumped and flapped once to keep Her aloft, then when the Halberds collided she landed gracefully on their tips. She then flung her sword at his open mouth, agape with astonishment, and hit with such force that it stuck out the back of his neck. Dead.

Six. As he fell, She folded one wing and flapped the other to somersault down from the halberds and retrieve Her rapier. Then She took the halberd of the slain and used it to decapitate the other foe in one swing. Dead.

Five. She hurled the halberd like a spear at an enemy who had decided that this was too much and was fleeing towards more enemies. The halberd flew true and struck the deserter in the back of his head. Dead.

Four. A crossbowman had finished reloading and fired in Her direction. She dashed towards him, catching the bolt mid air with Her free hand as She did, and skewered his heart with it. Dead.

Three. An enemy ran up with a shield and sword, backed up by another enemy with a hammer, and attacked Her. She parried the sword and used Her own to stab his exposed side all the way through and out the other side. Dead.

Two. She removed the shield of the corpse and held it up to block the hammer. It struck the shield with an almost deafening clang, and She bashed his head with it before doing it properly with the hammer he dropped. Dead.

One. She then turned towards the soldier, who watched the entire spectacle unfold, and dashed towards him, wings extended, sword ready.

The soldier was confused. Him? Why him? He was so certain that this Angel was sent for him. His faith in Her being his salvation never faltered at any moment in the brawl that had just happened. He watched as She went through the enemy ranks and thinned them faster than any knight he had ever seen. He stood as She finished off the last of the hostiles and now She was coming for him?

Of course. She WAS his salvation. She WAS his rescuer. She had just saved him for last so that She could finish what he started before She took him away.

As this revelation dawned upon him, he smiled again. He gazed into those same Ocean Blue eyes he had been transfixed on before, but instead of the raging storm he saw earlier, he found the calm sea. He dropped his sword as She closed the distance. This time, he wouldn't dare close his eyes.

In a flash, She was upon him, and Her sword found its target.

But it wasnt the soldier. A previously unseen enemy had managed to get directly behind him and would have finished him off if She hadn't noticed him and got to him when She did. A moment later, and he would have been shish kebab.

The enemy fell backwards behind him at the same time his sword hit the ground

As soon as he heard the clattering beside him, the strength in his legs gave way once more.

This time, however, She caught him and gently lowered him down so that his head was resting on her chest plate. It was only now that the soldier noticed her armor was similar to the colors of his own unit, except for a few style differences that matched the patterns worn by the priests and priestesses of his deity.

She then kneeled down Herself, propping his back on her outward leg and keeping his head rested on Her chest. His injured arm flopped limply at his side, his bad leg outstretched and flat. The soldier then spoke for the first time in what felt like ages.

"Tell me, Madame. When... will I pass on?" His voice was raspy beyond belief, as if his entire throat had become a desert. She removed his helmet slowly and with great care, setting it gently to his side, and retrieved a water canteen from her belt. As she helped him drink, she spoke to him, in a voice that could have easily serenaded instead.

"Be at peace, soldier. Your battle is over. Look, the enemy ranks are broken and driven before you!" As she said this, she stopped the canteen and let the soldier look out. Sure enough, the enemy was in full retreat, pursued by more warriors of his own army. She then continued "Your time has not yet come. For now, however, you have earned your rest." She then unfurled Her wings and used them to wrap the soldier in a feathery embrace. The feathers themselves were softer than any pillow or blanket the soldier had ever used in childhood. Immediately the soldier felt his strength somehow being restored, whether by the water in Her canteen or Her wings, he could not say. The soldier then asked her,

"Madame, how did I do? Did my deity hear me?" The rasp in his voice was nowhere to be found, no doubt a result of the water She gifted. She smiled a most wondrous smile, took his good hand in Hers, held his head close to Her once more, and answered,

"Brave Soldier, know that your prayers today have been heard. And I was the answer. Your deeds will be heard throughout the heavens this day."

The soldier smiled again, and allowed his eyes to close once more. Here, he could rest. Here, he was safe. She was here, and that was better than anything the enemy could throw at them.

The soldier rested there for about ten minutes, when the Angel then stirred him awake and said,

"Look, your comrades have arrived." Sure enough, the rear echelon had made it to their location to heal the wounded and tend to the dead. "Now I must depart, back to where I came from." She shifted the soldier painlessly to lie flat on his back. "Know this, Great Soldier. If ever you need my assistance again, call for your deity in your hour of need, and I will answer the call, just as I did today." She then stood and motioned to the other soldiers. As soon as they saw the Angel, however, they stopped right in their tracks and gazed in awe. She then called out to them "Soldiers, here! This one is alive!" Immediately they snapped out of their trance and made their way to the soldier's side. He was carefully and surprisingly painlessly shifted onto a stretcher as the healers of the group began tending to his wounds. As they did, the soldier caught a glimpse of the Angel once again, smiling at him, before she crouched down, spread her wings wide and took off, shooting towards the heavens, with feathers drifting down before turning to golden dust blown away in the wind before the soldiers' eyes.

As the soldier lies on the stretcher, being taken towards camp, he feels something between his hands. He opens them up and notices ond of the feathers from the wing of the Angel resting there, securely clasped. He considers the events that just transpired, and smiles contentedly.

With a Guardian Angel like Her watching out for him, he'll be just fine.

On the other hand human lives are filled with a multitude of joys which can only have substance because they can be contrasted with the hurts, and each of those moments is so much more intense and valuable because there's only so much time in a human life to enjoy them. To live around mortal beings is the only way immortal ones could ever understand just how valuable each moment of living is, since they themselves can never fully die.

The Angel sits in her shell, constructed by the wizard's Arcane magics that seal her power away. She had been sitting in this prison for what must have been only a few days, but the magic involved made it feel more like 10 years.

How many people had she seen go through the chamber she was in? One? Two, maybe? Her cell had been largely undisturbed during her time here, save for the occasional visit by the wizard to check on the bindings that held her shell intact, but she couldn't tell. Everything that happened on his end was largely muffled both by the wall of the room itself and her magic shell.

What tormented her the most, however, was directly below her. Her shell was placed in such a way so that she could see through a conveniently placed hole in the floor, about the size of a drain cover, into the cavernous chamber below. There, the wizard did his real work; experimenting on other, much more mortal men and women that he had "acquired," as he oh so sickeningly liked to put it. The sounds of that room were significantly clearer, undoubtedly another trick of his arcanism. She could hear everything that went on in there, the chimes of his spells taking effect, the clinking of the metal tools and bindings he was using, the steps his armored feet took as they connected with the rock floor, and of course the screams.

So. Many. Screams.

I really liked how zendikar angels worked
I actually just like pre-RoE Zendikar in general but the angels stood out to me
>>
>>64529879
>Forgot to mention that was (1/?)

The screams began almost immediately as soon as the wizard brought another "specimen" into the room. Usually these first ones were that of defiance; howling curses, ill will, and other malicious intentions at the one who brought them in here. These would continue until their voices gave out or the wizard got bored with it and silenced them with a wave of his hand. After this, he would then get them situated into the table where they would remain for their duration in this pit, locked into various shackles and other restraints designed to hold creatures much, much stronger than a simple humanoid. Then, with a wicked glint in his eye, the wizard would wave his hands around, arcane trails following their movements and drawing sigils in the air before they flee of their own accord into the helpless victim on the table.

The silence would last for maybe a few minutes as he retrieved whatever vile materials he would be using for this newest experiment. He then would undo the silencing he had placed if he had done so earlier. Once this was done, he would proceed to roll up his sleeves so that they weren't in the way. This was the sign, the Angel had learned. This was the sign that another nightmare was about to begin, another person was going to become a victim of his madness, another soul would become forever torn from a chance at salvation.

He would then begin his work, and the screams would reach even into her very core

(2/?)
>>
>>64530053

The screams of agony would be overwhelming now. The Angel could only watch as he would cast spell after spell on his newest toy. She could only listen as they begged for him to stop, to ask why, to hurl even more curses if they were particularly strong willed, but more often than not they would be in too much pain to say anything at all. She could only sit and see the wizard weave magics into their flesh, drawing more and more sigils that would imprint themselves onto the victim before fading into nothing. All the while the person on the table would be screaming into the abyss around them. He would then make use of whatever he had brought over before returning them to their places, examine the victim one more time, as if to ensure that his handiwork was properly applied, then he would simply walk out of the chamber once the screaming stopped and the person realized that aside from a massive amount of pain, nothing had actually happened.

Yet.

For the Angel knew all too well what was coming next. Once this was done, he would exit the chamber and ensure that it was sealed tight. Then he would join the Angel in her cell with a separate viewing window for him and watch from above.

Everytime he entered, she wanted to kill him. Everytime he arrived, she wished for nothing more than for his confidence to be his downfall and for one of the seals on her shell (JUST ONE) to fail so she could break free of this prison and return the suffering he inflicted a thousand fold. Everytime she vowed to exact vengeance on him for all the people (SO MANY PEOPLE) he had tortured. But it was not to be, the seals were good, the wizard secure, and the Angel was helpless (SO. HELPLESS.) to do anything about it.

And that was the greatest torture of all, being totally unable to do anything (ANYTHING AT ALL) while he sits smug in his observation deck and watches with her as his magics begin to take effect. For it was usually about now that the true horror would begin

(3/?)
>>
>>64530217

The changes would begin from within and work their way out. Horrible forms would seize their bodies, mold into shape and back out again, quickly and in rapid succession. It was as if whatever power he had placed in his victims had decided that their current frail form was wholly insufficient for whatever purpose he had intended it for and through trial and error was trying to decide on a new shape for itself. Unfortunately the wizard cared little for how much pain this process of elimination would cause and simply left them to suffer as his magics took hold. Wretched beasts would morph into being, briefly hold shape, then implode on themselves into a vaguely humanoid fleshy mass and start anew. This process could take minutes or hours, but one thing remained constant: The screams of torment the victim gave out would always overpower everything else she heard. The morphing of their body, the laughing of the wizard beside her, her own cries of despair, all of it drowned out by the implacable screaming.

Everytime this happened, she fell a little further into despair. It started small at first, barely even noticable, but it grew into an obvious condition. Her hair had changed from a Golden Brown to it's current Blue. She knows this because the wizard gleefully conjured a mirror for her to view the effects of his torment on her first hand. Her wings, too, had changed from their usual bleach white to deep blue. Whether this was an effect of his sealing spells or her own nature was impossible to say. The shell, too, was also blue, and became darker the further into despair she fell. She remembered hearing wizard state that was by design, that the more she despaired the darker her shell would be, until she was totally surrounded by her own powerlessness. That was his game, to drive an Angel so far into despair they would Fall. She just happened to be the one he got his hands on, a day she remembers all too well.

She had been travelling with her charge, an adventurer who had defended a temple filled with children and the pious from a raiding party. So valiant was he that the deity worshipped there assigned her to accompany him and aide him in his quests. They travelled the world righting wrongs and doing good, amassing a party of like minded companions, and overall making the world a better place. Throughout it all, her charge never wavered, and she was happy to call him a Friend of the Host.

The party then traveled to this land to investigate disappearances and reports of bizarre monstrosities roaming the land. They were about to examine a cave system when a multitude of these beasts attacked from all sides. In the ensuing brawl, she had somehow managed to get separated from the others for but a moment (ONE MOMENT) before she felt a chain wrap around her and her divine energy left her. She was dragged away from the others and placed into this shell, then it glowed, and darkness. She awoke here, in her cell with her shell, the wizard standing triumphantly in the doorway. Of course she tried to break the shell then and there, to no avail. The wizard then explained her predicament, that she was sealed there through QUITE a number of spells, and she would become his newest plaything in due time. An Angel, after all, was a rare specimen indeed, and he would be an utter fool if he were to let such an opportunity go to waste.

There he sat, revelling equally in the spectacle of her despair and the mutation of his most recent experiment. The screaming had been going on for so long now (SO MUCH SCREAMING) that she had lost track of everything else. The wizard decided now was a good time to go observe his handiwork up close, got up, and left the cell. The door slammed shut behind her, but she did not care.

Soon after, however, a tremendous banging could be heard on the large door that led into the torture chamber.

(5/?)
>>
>>64530559

The sound was so sudden, so DIFFERENT, that it pulled the Angel out of her own head and back into reality. Inside the chamber was a horrible creature that resembled a hulking brute of a man. Its flesh had been replaced in various spots by a bony almost exoskeleton, its head resembled a fanged snake with its lower jaw missing. Its arms were easily as thick as a barrel, and as long as it was tall. The restraints holding the former person had long since been destroyed by the sheer size and mass of the brute that now roamed about like a gorilla. It seemed to ignore the banging on it's prison door, too concerned with it's new state of being to notice anything else.

That is, until the door was flung apart by a magical explosion. The Angel could only watch as half of her party entered the chamber with the monster. The creature suddenly turn around to view the wizard's new guests as the wizard himself entered from another room and quickly cast a spell. The monsters eyes began glowing, the same purple glow the creatures that attacked them had. The wizard then quickly left the pit and the monster immediately charged.

The Angel stared as she took in the spectacle before her. The wizard had just finished his newest creation. Her friends had arrived, presumably to free her. Half of the party was missing, probably dead from whatever else was here. Her charge was nowhere to be seen. They had mistakenly entered the very chamber where the monster was, and it had just been given the command to attack them.

All the Angel could do was sit in her shell and watch her friends die. She tried to break her shell, newfound determination to rescue her party surging through her as she did so. The shell held true. She began banging on its side, trying to make any sort of progress. The shell stood fast. She desperately tried to use whatever power she had to do something, ANYTHING AT ALL, to get out of her shell and DO SOMETHING. The shell stayed strong.

She was powerless

(6/?)
>>
>>64530808

The Angel could only watch as her friends were going to die. She did not notice that her shell had begun to change to a navy blue color. She did not notice that the darkness surrounding her (SO DARK) had begun to close in. The screams that she heard were now only her own, as the shell now muffled out all sounds. The Angel now fell further into despair than she ever had before. Her charge was gone. Her friends were going to die. Her prison was secure. She was completely helpless (SO. HELPLESS.)

The realization of her utter defeat hit her like she had just walked into a brick wall. Her strength failed, and she sat back on her knees as despair finally set in. She was trapped in her shell (TRAPPED) and was completely powerless (SO. POWERLESS.) and couldn't do anything to save her friends (ANYTHING. AT ALL.)

Then, the shell around her shattered.

She started and turned around. There in the doorway, sword drawn, was her charge, and the other half of the party behind him. Somehow he had undone the sealing spells that had held her in place and destroyed her prison. At once she felt all of her divine strength return in all its glory, and the room was filled with a golden light as her formerly blue wings and hair returned to their natural white and brown hues. The sudden divine energy explosion rocked through the cell and destroyed the floor. Immediately she looked down into the pit. There was the rest of the party, with the monster lying on the ground between them all, unmoving. A sudden sound drew the attention of everybody in her cell. Standing in the next room was the wizard himself, having come in to investigate the sudden explosion in his observation deck. He could only watch in abject horror as the realization dawned on him that the very Angel he had been tormenting was now free from her shell. She conjured a sword, and her heart was filled with joy that now, she was finally free. Free from her prison, free from the screams, free from her despair.

You have a point. There are a number of ways to answer that objection, though. 1) Not every setting has to have Christian/Jewish-style angels (which are in themselves represented inconsistently), or a monotheistic (or any) God. Winged humanoids of (optionally) great virtue and righteousness and (optionally) with haloes can be taken in a great many different directions.

2) The Angelic ranks might be just that - ranks, as in a military. There's already the trope of angels "gaining their wings" - perhaps they also gain the powers of Archangels or Seraphim through promotion for competence, or through election. Even anarchist armies have leaders.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary_Insurrectionary_Army_of_Ukraine#Organisation

Cherubim might simply be juvenile angels. There might even be angelic political officers, though they probably don't need them.

3) They might simply have specialised social or military roles, still being equal in a metaphysical, economic, or political sense. As long as some varieties of angels don't extract rent from others through the ownership of property, I'd say that's fine.

Anyway, as James Madison put it - "if men were angels, they would need no government". Angels are perfectly suited for a stateless society!

Anyway, that's way angels can be communists/socialists. Why *should* they be?

1) There's strong precedent for religious socialism in angel-having religions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diggers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazdak
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_socialism
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_socialism

2) Righteousness and zeal are traditional characteristics of angels, and imply a well-defined ideology - if not a religious one.

3) Idealism, sharing, healing the sick, etc. Heaven's healthcare system might even be better than Cuba's!

Gods can't really be everywhere at once, or there might be undesirable consequences to getting personally involved in certain things. That being the case, they find it useful to create servants with a small portion of their divine power. Winged humanoids are fairly popular for their combination of mobility and relatability to many breeds of mortals.

I've got angels that are based on hummingbirds - they're mysterious, iridescent, violent (have you ever seen hummingbirds fighting over a feeding-spot?), and their flight has an unsettling quality to it - they move sporadically and a little *too* quickly for their size, pausing after short, buzzing bursts of movement to hover and observe.

They serve the purposes of far-off gods, appearing on Earth to aid the causes of the favoured and (sometimes) to accept sacrifices.
>>
>>64535989
You needn't use the name if that becomes a stumbling block. The general purpose is to create spirits that serve the gods directly, can travel and traverse planes, and probably have a good deal less free will than the mortals they talk to.

I know DnD gods have all sorts of standard attendants (Archons, Planetars, Solars), and in real religions Ahura Mazda had His emanations that actually went around doing the things that needdd doing. I guess the Gnostics had something similar going on with the Archons and the Aeons (but they are Christian based so maybe it enters in Abahamic?).
Are there other examples?

Aside from that some other things I'd like to discuss- what parts from the Abrahamic religions are best to nab off each-other? Are there any nuggets of jewish, Islamic, heck even Mormon lore that could be pinched?

Also if I recall correctly- thrones are the angels that preside over entire countries and nations with crowns for halo's, and I always felt that was a cool idea- anything more fun that could be done with it? Country-sona's with angels?

Christianity has quite a theological tradition- Latin debates in early universities are a nice aesthetic, quite apart from their ideas. I also just fucking love cathedrals. And stained glass.

The book of Ecclesiastes in general is a gold mine of ideas. Revelation too, in a different way. Eden and the Fall (and the Apple, and the angel east of Eden with a flaming sword, and the serpent in the garden) are incredibly compelling as themes and images. More generally, the Biblical desert, the theme of seclusion in a desolate place apart from the rest of the world which yield insight - from Moses et al to Jesus in the wilderness to the Egyptian hermits to the cenobitic monasteries. The image of the tortured body on the cross, crowned with thorns, streaming blood, is also very compelling. (And I say that as an atheist.) Salvation by sacrifice and blood is very powerful, aesthetically. In general, there's just so *much* easily accessible Christian art, poetry, literature, etc. to mine for ideas.

I know less about Islam, but the idea of the genie is a lot more interesting that it gets credit for in pop culture - the idea of a separate, parallel humanity invisible to us, made of fluid elements, metaphysically equal and sometimes communicable with, inhabiting desolate places is just great. Plus, Islamic architecture and abstract design is fantastic. The idea of a god which *can't* be represented, who is too far above and beyond the human world to be imaged, and a prophet whose image is blasphemy, is wonderful (however constraining it might be in the real world). I love the idea of Paradise as a green place full of water in the desert.

I know very little about Mormonism as a religion, but their history is intriguing - the weird cult fleeing the Eastern cities into the Western desert, driven by mobs, building a new Temple far away...that's a good one. I guess the idea of having a ton of bizarre and veritably false racism written into your doctrine, and having to tie yourself in knots to make it seem less indefensible in a changed world, is an interesting one.

Dunno about thrones. I don't think I've ever seen them employed that way in fiction, but it's a neat idea. Especially when nations split, or are conquered, or have to accommodate new cultures, have their boundaries blurred- what happens to an essentialist being in a fluid, changing world?

The angel with the flaming sword was one of those parts of religion that always stuck out to me (also as an atheist). Also proposal- I always figured that the serpent works better as it's own character than as a ploy of satan as was later retconned.

I like the idea that djinn are their own thing, neither wholly good or wholly evil, and also split between muslims, Christians and jews (with the door open for pagan and atheist djinn). My only issue is that they don't really make sense with regards to the origin story (there's god, with humans as his chief creation, and angels as his intermediearies, demons spawning from the rebellious angels). Hence I think djinn would work better as being retconned as neutral angels, similar to what the medieval explanation for faeries (it's quite obvious that djinn were put into the quran to square a lot of entrenched local myths in that part of the world).
>>64543901
I have a soft spot for mormons since every one I've met has seriously examined their batshit religion and genuinely believes in it. So there's a certain sincerity I respect that I find absent with practically every other religious person I meet. Also I respect that their system allows for much more flexibility- they have living prophets who can at any time correct parts of their doctrine, making them much more flexible as a religion than say catholicism, since the living prophet can say that they are getting rid of the polygamy, and the racism.

One of the things about thrones that interests me is what you could do for them- the Throne for Israel would almost certainly be jewish (or whatever the equivelant for angels would be), meanwhile you'd probably also have angels for transitory nations as well (like a lot of native american indian tribes for instance).

Catholics do have that, actually: the doctrine of papal infallibility. Technically speaking, to a Catholic, anything that the Pope says about Christianity is to be regarded as true, valid, and without error.

Which is absolutely friggin' bonkers, if you ask me, but nevertheless contradicts what you said about catholicism.

Problem being that the pope is historically gun shy about using that power (like telling people printing bibles in vernacular is haram so as to avoid the reformation). I always just assume the wings aren't actually "flesh and blood" but a spectral quality, a la halos. They're "there" but not there.
>>
>>64565095
I like to think of it that they are physical wings, and they make flying easier, but they are also magic which is why flight is possible for angels.

I also like to think angel feather while soft to the touch are more durable than steel.
>>
IIRC according to Catholicism and Orthodoxy the higher are in the angelic hierarchy you go, the more you are expected to serve those in the lower ranks. So if you ever walk into a building housed by angels and you want to find out who is in charge, look for the janitor.
>>
>>64565513
Does that mean the ones on the lowest ranks are the primadona's who don't do anything?
>>
>>64565590
I think it's more along the lines of how you occasionally get someone who extols the virtues of their leader, but then when you meet the leader himself he's a very down to earth and humble guy.
>>
>>64565590

>>

I imagine that's correct, but going further everything else you're seeing when you look at an angel is probably equally a spectral quality.

>Catholics do have that, actually: the doctrine of papal infallibility. Technically speaking, to a Catholic, anything that the Pope says about Christianity is to be regarded as true, valid, and without error.
It's funny when you know history about some of popes....

One of my favourite is the Cadaver Synod.

>There used to be a pope called Formosus. He died. Two popes after him came Pope Stephen VI. He decided that Formosus was wrong with stuff and decided to put him on trial. They took Formosus's body from the tomb and brought to the papal court for judgment. The jury have found the corpse guilty. Everything he did was nullified, he was at first buried on a graveyard for foreigners and later on uncovered one more and threw to Tiber.

>Later on Stephen VI was imprisoned and killed during an uprising. His successor was a pope for like 3 months before dying to an unknown cause. Then came Pope Theodore II. He annulled the Cadaver Synod, recovered Formosus's body, restored his titles and all that. He also died 20 days after becoming a pope. After Theodore II came John IX. He not only confirmed the judgment of Theodore II but added more to it. Restored those who had been degraded by Stephen VI to the ranks they've held before. He died two years later.

>Some time later came Pope Sergius III. He decided that the Cadaver Synod was right and both Theodore II and John IX were wrong.

>What's the ideal wingspan-to-arm ratio?

There is no ideal. All wingspans are cute.

>How do halos work?

In the setting I'm currently using they tend to be less normal halos of light and more full body nimbuses of shadow and flame which they take up as a mantle if they need to show their glory without killing the mortals.

>What's angel society like?

Deeply hierarchical. You obey your superior angels without question, You obey the demi-gods without question and if a god talks to you directly you obey them without question before you even get the order.

>Under what circumstances can angels get lewd?

They likely wouldn't really understand the concept of getting lewd unless they were higher ranked angels. Or direct servants to the god of sex. In general most of the lewd activities of angels would likely be demi-gods or gods ordering them to have sex with them for entertainment. I guess there could be a case of a mortal trying something similar but unless they happened to be god tier at seduction and in a rare case where they can talk with a angel at their leisure then it won't work.

>What quirks do they have?

Off the top of my head their natural shape is a wave like creation of the gods. Due to how the setting works the gods effectively form the concepts that make everything in existence as a kind of wave. Reality is created by the blending of all those waves. Angels are creatures which are more pure manifestations of those waves. Which means a lot of the lower ranking angels actually are closer to emotionless robots then real people. It's only when you reach the Mid-low tier angels that they start developing a true personality and those personalities tend to be based on whatever god created them and how refined they made them. Or assuming they are mass created types what early interactions their bodies had during creation. This actually technically also means angels could actually be called a much more refined version of the terrestrial spirits.

Only when he's talking expressly on matters of the faith, as his role of the pope and directly invoking it. There is a lot of popestuff that doesn't fall under it.

Large. as big as you can.

I usually imagine them as thin lines of light that grows in intensity with how strong the emotions the angel is experiencing.

>What's angel society like?
war never changes. also a very clear hierarchy. I sometime think of them like a hive of Slivers where there is some sort of hive mind, if not as prominent as a real hive, but each of them can feel the others.

yes.

I turned my Aasimar into a race of Fluffy Winged not-quite-Angels, so I can contribute whilst thinking about them.

>What's the ideal wingspan-to-arm ratio?
About the width of their arm span from hand to hand. They don't use them to fly, though, so much as they use them to glide and to dramatically extend the length of their jump or to fall safely from a great height. Their preferred habitat is on top of fluffy clouds, so this is quite useful.

>How do halos work?
An Aasimar's Halo is merely an enchanted ceremonial ornament. An engraved and flourished ring made of Electrum: it's only worn by religious officials & representatives of the church and is something of a badge of authority. A Halo stays perpetuated in the air so long as an Aasimar is true to their faith. Aasimar take their Halos off when they go to bed.

>What's angel society like?
Methodical, predictable, but very peaceful. They live their entire lives isolated from all the other races on soft, idealistic, clouds where the build magnificent cathedrals & castle towns. They don't really do anything exciting beyond farm, herd fluffy sky sheep or goats, religious studies, catching falling stars (where they get metal and coals from) and embroidering & goldsmithing religious iconography. They're the kind of people who have 1 glass of wine for dinner and then promptly head to bed at 11pm.
With that said: Aasimar emulate a lot of biblical hunting culture and going bow hunting for birds or wild cloud prancing goats is an avid passion of theirs.

>Under what circumstances can angels get lewd?
Aasimar are gender segregated until they're 21, so most adolescent lewd'ness is in the form of rampant, exploratory, homosexuality. Once they come of age, though, they're given 2 years to find a spouse or they'll have one picked for them by their parents or elders. After marriage they're free to be as lewd with their spouse as they so desire.

>Under what circumstances can angels get lewd?

Jesus has a pretty famous moment where Mary Magdalene is using really expensive oil on him, and Judas points out that if they sold it they could have given tons of money to the poor. Jesus response is basically "I'm going to die soon, the poor are going to be around forever, fuck off Judas." The author tries to spin it as Judas really just wanting the money for himself but it isn't too convincing.

I like D&D polytheism where every god has their own planar realm and their own unique servants.

"Angel" probably shouldn't be a word among the celestials themselves, I think "angel" should be a word that the common people use for highly benevolent creatures that obviously aren't from here.
>>
>>64569103

>tfw angel booty so big it needs its own pair of wings
>>
>>64577940
It's a lovely thought isn't it?
On a more serious note, I actually like hip wings that you occasionally see on anime angels/demons, though for angels only if they have two additional pairs on their back, it's a good interpretation of the seraphim look in my opinion
>>
>>64535989
Most of my settings don't really have angels. But the one that does gets around it by making angels the creations of all the gods who stay in the ivory tower called heaven. So it's polytheism but all the gods are directly related to the others and all made the angels as warriors and troubleshooters for problems in creation they don't want to deal with.
>>
>>64578440
Possibly? To be honest I would consider it unlikely, but back in Bible times "feet" was a euphemism for genitals so…
>>
>>64578623

I think I like that better than the D&D default. It's fun to picture the angels as this separate body apart from the usual divine politics.

Unfortunately, I'm honestly not to informed on bird behaviour regarding their wings. But I would think as a basic level, I would have not all Angel wings be the simple wing feathered pair, and differentiate them based on their purpose, domain, or rank within the society. If you are a servant of a War God, or ranked as one designated to go into battle, your wings would more resemble those of Raptors and other birds of prey, A more scholarly one would bear those of an Owl, one focusing on the Seas might have those of an Albatross. Then you can get into designs, and colouring, reflecting the personality or nature of the Angel in question, since we see beautiful patterns in species all the time. Imagine an Angel descending with the colouration of a Macaw, or a Bluejay, just off the top of my head. Finally, I suppose I'd just have them do little things in relation to a mood. Rufflinf feathers when either trying to get comfortable, or unnerved, spreading wings out, as if to prepare for flight when alarmed, raising them up when trying to intimidate, I'm not entirely sure, just those sorts of smaller touches.

The weird thing about Christian morality is that it's an actual physical thing, like it's own force or something. You can literally be killed by raw righteousness. So when Christians say God is good, they aren't really referring to a moral statement so much as they are saying that he is literally made of goodness.
>>
>>64585202
At least the jews seem to have made peace with the idea that there's is an angry and spiteful god, but Christians try to have it both ways- morality comes from god, but god is also all-good, which is why witch-burnings and gay conversion therapy aren't just good, but also compassionate.
>>64585231
We should never forget the bible was written by an ancient desert culture way back when. The morals in the bible clearly aren't 'be a good person' they are 'always follow religious authority', this is quite clearly demonstrated by the tales of Isaac, Job, and many others. Samson, a great Hebrew hero is pretty much just an asshole, his mistake was following a girl from the neighboring tribe home, and his redemption was to topple a whole building killing everyone in it including himself.

Those are the same thing. Thugs also use righteous language and emotional arguments to justify their authority, Abrahamic religions also used the threat of force to justify their authority, it's the same thing happening in a different time and place.

You're right though. Back then, they simply didn't have any higher ideals about how people deserve to be treated, your local religious authority was the only moral authority that could possibly exist so most people lived their whole lives trapped in the world of thug-logic.

Christians started as a persecuted cult, and all their initial messages were about forgiveness, love, etc, because among other things it helped keep their community strong.
The logic they use to reconcille the messages from the time they were a tiny persecuted cult with thw fact that now they are one of the biggest religions in the world is very tortuous.

>What's the ideal wingspan-to-arm ratio?
I think that regardless of setting, wings should at least be big enough to be intimidating. Even if they aren't used for actual flight for whatever reason, angels need to be taken seriously. Demons, especially succubutts, can get away with tiny "cute" wings but not angels.

Wings should be large and fluffy. Needed for flight in a technical sense that disabling the wings causes them to be unable to fly but not in a literal sense that they work on physics. More like a magic item that allows flight but permanent.

A demon turns into a risen demon, much like an angel turns into a fallen angel. Risen Demons learn to channel their vices constructively for the betterment of others. A greed risen demon for instance would act as a socialist, or capitalist hero (either could work).

This probably would go better in world building, but fuck it, not like anything else is happening here.

How do you go about designing your Angels and their functions? Do you start by making the Deity and it's place in the setting first, or do you make the mortals of the world, and then design religions and figures within the beliefs to reflect that? I'm trying to dabble a bit in working on a pantheon, and I want to know if I;m putting the cart infront of the horse by starting with Gods and Angels before people.
>>
>>64602760
I guess it depends on what kind of setting I want. If I want traditional angels in the setting, I'll base my setting around that. If I want some other part to be the focus, then I'd go the other way.

For instance- if I were to do a cheesecake setting about monstergirls, I'd start with the lore as to why there's so many monstergirls. Whereas if I just want an aesthetic- like say steampunk, I'd design the angels around that- being like clockwork machines with wings made of swords that phase in and out of existance, wearing fancy bowties.
>>
>>64587793
Kinda weird.
>>
>>64602760
Definitely start with the people first. What sort of history do they have? Are they warlike or peaceful? Do they enjoy bountiful harvests regularly, or do they struggle to maintain their stores? Is it cold, mountainous, and snowy? Or more like hot, sandy, and flat?

Factors such as these will then turn around and influence the sort of deities the people would worship. A God/dess of the Harvest would be worshipped differently in a civilization that is overflowing with grain as opposed to a civilization that barely breaks even year after year. From there, you come up with the deities and how they're worshipped, and then their servants (if any)

It all depends on what you want to believe- if you want to believe god is good, you'll believe that and conveniently ignore stuff that points in the opposite direction (for instance- isn't killing all the firstborn in Egypt really, really horrendous? It's a genocide of children, who were innocent and not part of the abusatory system that persecuted jews, it's an act of pure spite) while those on the opposite side of the fence are more concerned with pointing out that the god in the bible isn't the one that people claim to worship, therefore it's all bs and people should be allowed to do whatever they want, up to and including buttsex.

New question, is there a point where your Angels will no longer attempt to save your soul, or recognize you as one of God's children? What heinous act would be far enough that redemption would be considered beyond possibility, if such a point exists?

Depends on if you believe in predetermination I guess.

Considering god is all powerful and all knowing, Big G already knows if your ass is getting in heaven or not- therefore he's only going to send angels to the souls that are going to be (or at least potentially be) saved, and if you're going into hell, nothing is going to get you out of it, therefore a scenario where an angel gives up on you would never occur, since they'd never be sent to someone who'd be going to hell anyway.
>>
>>64611955
Way I always had it was he dose know everything, in that he knows all possible possibilities. He knows all your possible choices at any given moment and what each choices that choice will lead to and so on and so on.
Gave us free will, but still all knowing
>>
>>64611955
That's a fair, if kinda boring answer, I suppose, no offense. Guess that'd be how it would work with a standard All Knowing Deity.

>>64612009
So then, how would you answer? What is the line that once, crossed, a mortal soul cannot come back from?
>>
>>64612069
It's why in my opinion you need to kneecap Big G somehow (having him had fucked off not long after creation is a good way to do it) or just make him the villain, which makes the overall narrative much more cohesive.
>>
>>64612312
You could have Big G fuck off, and leave his creation to the management of his next level of staff? Sort of tell the Arch-Angels what his plan is, how they should act, and then trust in them to trust in him to follow the vision, promise to always be watching, all that jazz. Then you have the much less capable divines in power.
>>
>>64612407
He can fuck off in a number of ways. Maybe he lives on earth as an ascetic, maybe he started a new project, maybe he exists in some cosmic time-wedgie of his own doing, maybe he's become afraid of his creations, and lives locked away in heaven.

>Does morality come from god, or is god beholden to morality?

Getting pretty deep with that kind of questioning frankly. As an example, Aristotle believed morality is based on whether an act is in accordance with the proper final end (telos) of something. So if the proper final end of sex is reproduction (hey, look away from that pic anon...), then it follows logically that all non-procreative sexual acts are bad.

St Thomas Aquinas married this to Christian theology and wrote a fair bit about it here: http://www.newadvent.org/summa/1006.htm

Not surprisingly, as modern notions of morality tend to be based around concepts like utility (think JS Mill etc), happiness, individual liberty or equality... you're obviously going to get a clash with Christian morals, because the objective differs.

It's even worse when you read the bible and see it spelled out in canon that Pharaoh wanted to release the jooz, but god actually stepped in to stop him from releasing them so he'd have an excuse to unleash his plagues.
