Hnng that's some sexy monopose plastic.

Always found it cool how the Battle Masters archers and crossbowmen matched the style of the Heroquest expansion mercenaries, maybe an option if you ever wanted to add Greatswords or something.

As for musicians, the monopose Skull Pass Goblins used to have a standard, then the musician had a gong kind of thing on a stick, so they both kind of looked like standard bearers. Might be an idea.

/r9k/ has captured all the grinchs this year we should be fine.

I'm more bothered by people posting huge boxes of stuff. I couldn't do that this year I went through my collection to find some cool models and included some hobby tools. I would like to think 8 models from different companies would be a nice gift to get. I would be happy with getting to paint models from different places. I don't like the idea of my match being disappointed when he sees a small package arrive instead of a magicians trunk complete with assistant inside.
>>
>>63396783
Don't worry, anon, only an asshat would be disappointed by getting that. It's about the spirit of giving and receiving thoughtful gifts rather than getting a buttload of stuff.
>>
>>63396783
Same here. I've sent 11 different minis, 6 unpainted and 5 painted by me and some candy. Now I'm afraid it would look like I'm a cheap bastard.

I'm scared because I'm from the bottom of the world and I struggled sending my gift, so I suppose an Anon will get the same if not worse trouble sending me something, and yeah, don't care getting Scrooged, because you never really know the real situation of an Anon, so getting something back for me it's great

Pic related but with different contents, as I said I already forwarded the track n° to ssbro and my stuff will arrive hopefully after Xmas
>>
>>63396815
Last year some guys got shafted and I didn't want to be the guy shafting this year. I got no prompt, so I took things I thought were cool and followed my /awg/ spirit.

Now I'll end up with a trunk and feel like shit even though I still sent $30s of stuff.
>>
>>63396898
Did people not get matched by region this year? Every package has been international so far. Are people matched to gift each other or are they all in a daisy chain?

>>63396895

>>63396952
>He didn't hot glue his gifts before he sent them.
>>
>>63396925
It's daisy chain, also wishlists are considered.
>>
>>63396783
If someone is disappointed because he only got a "small" gift instead of a huge box full with new stuff then he did not understand the idea behind Secret Santa (especially this one) in the first place. Don't blame yourself if you actually put thought in your gift.
To me a nice card or letter together with something small but nice is worth more to me than a sealed battleforce in an unpersonal box.
>>
>>63396689
Thanks ill look into them :D and im kinda liking the uniform look, may brake it up with beards visors and parchment on shields etc

Working up some more trees for an AoS army in a town that doesn't really play AoS.
But God damn I wanted to paint up an autumn wood something fierce. Good to branch out into other projects anyhow, as it breaks up the monotony of dingy white armor or tyranids.
>>
>>63397130
The box is definitely personalized.

I thought "What of my painting log do I think is really cool and want to paint?" and picked models based on that. Ordered a couple and sent it off. I like discovering new mini producers so trying different models interests me.

Looking to paint my Death Guard in a drowned look but need help with the armor. Was thinking of doing a coat of Tyhpus Corrosion with a light wash of Hexwraith and Nighthaunt before roughly drybrushing some silver on. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thinking of painting the fleshy parts the colours of different sea life, like red for octopuses and grey for sharks and stuff. Pox will done in similar fashion and Foetid Drone will be done to look like it's made from ship wreck parts.

I did not know this. Every day is a school day. Thanks anon !
>>

you're thinking of coat d'arms
>>
>>63397646
Yep it's the reason why all the paints got their new copyrighted names. Model color and Game Color are also a good paints to work with for the project you're wanting to work on anon. All three are a bit more thicker to work with than G-dubz paints, but once you get used to them it'll become difficult to go back to using the GW paints. Hell, I'd prefer to work with michael's super cheap 69 cent paints than certain GW paints at this point.
>>
>>63397777
Nope Vallejo. Coat D'arms was the second company GW went to AFTER they split from Vallejo. This was around 2009-ish. Coat D'arms was later.

>>

Paint pots have really stupid patents all over them. Coat D arms paints smell and act like those paints. It's an unique smell in paints as well. I would suggest they switched bottles because of licensing but kept making the paint.

I've never heard of vallejo working with GW. Vallejo has always been a paint maker and have no reason to get in bed with GW. The anon above is wrong since his timeline is wildly off.

As this Anon said, its more fun to get (and send ofc) stuff from other countries. This is an international platform after all.

Besides, only GB had enough participants to keep it separate but i choose not to do that because the rest of Europe had only 1-3 guys from each country (only Germany had a couple more, still below 10 though).

I agree. Paired with an Australianon last year and got introduced to TIMTAMS and now I'm addicted to them.
Actually last year I asked the participants if they only want to be matched in their own country to cut down on shipping costs.
>>
>>63398500
The best range for those are Scale 75. They are super matte and rich.

That was mostly why I wondered so many Europoors were getting packages. GB is over represented and I would of expected most of them being matched up and then people who said international was okay would link to the europoors on the big island.

Postage wasn't bad. I was expecting a tenner and it wasn't close.

>>

So far only a few actually got their package already (at least only a few pics were posted).
But i forwarded at least 40 tracking numbers during the last 2 days, and those were from everywhere.

Besides, last years Santa is different from this years, so its not exactly "my" system he used last year, but i think it was inspired by me mostly matching continents in 2015 and 16 just like i did it this year. (it was necessary back then because we had not even half as many participants).

If you ship cross-country (especially if its to the US) you need to state on the parcel what is inside. You can keep it generic though.
For example "christmas sweets" + "plastic toys" if you send some candy and minis. The USA (and Australia too) are rather strict with the import of food and organic things.

i just regret to not sending more candy or different stuff, i was worried about the arriving times because my post office takes like 20+ days to ship something (aliexpress stuff takes easiñy 3 to 4 months downhere)

because the entire purpose of this whole SS thing is to send a small gift to someone you don't know. Not to send the most expensive stuff you can afford.

Some of us have more stuff to give away then others, for weeks I was nervous about sending all the books and comics, and being a cheap bastard. Can we stop the gift value discussion ? This is really souring the mood of the entire thing. I am glad to be receiving something and i am even more excited about how happy anon will be when he receives the gift i prepared for him.
And that is the end of that.
>>
>>63399307
Yeah, I agree.

Any Anons worried about their presents not being enough and 'looking bad' due to larger presents, know that nobody involved expects a large present, it's just really nice accepting a gift from a stranger. If you've sent a nice present, as long as it was thoughtful, will be appreciated by most anons.

>>63399372
No shit fuckwad, Anon isn't talking about giving a meager gift, it's anons comparing their presents to other, larger presents. Stop trying ruin the spirit of Christmas you clown.
>>
>>63399413

>>
>>63399372

>>
>>63399413
Painting tracks on the sprue and then finishing them off on the model was always the way to go.
I miss the times when the tracks came on their own sprue and were made of black plastic though.
>>
>>63399265
>it's that there's some huge gifts going out which make smaller ones look bad.

If someone thinks a smaller gift is "bad" or "not enough" in comparison with other gifts then the fault is not yours. its that guy who should think about the christmas spirit and what this is all about.

Some scale model kits have rubber tracks and I love them, I wish GW would use them, but I don't know how common this is or how well recieved they are.
>>
Just realized that I haven't done a thing with any of the models that I got from last year's SS, except for one, which I painted and am now sending for this year's SS.
hm
>>
>>63399481
Vinyl and rubber tracks makes the model easy to assemble, but they never look natural. most serious scale model builders replace them with plastic or even metal linked tracks.
>>
>>63399471
How come every time I see a fineshit model in these threads it looks pristine but whenever I buy one it looks like it was eaten by worms
>>
>>63399484
It's cute to think how for that model would have travelled
>>
>>63399484
I would love it if it ended up back in the hands of the anon who orignally sent it last year
>>
>>63399481
Those rubber tracks are usually a huge pain in the ass. Glue and paint does not stick well to them, they can get porous over time or the paint flakes off.
I built quite a number of scale model tanks and i always try to get 3rd party tracks if the kit only comes with rubber band tracks. (some companies include both, link-and-length as well as rubber band)

It depends on the manufacturer (and also on the year when the kit was released).
Newer kits usually have better quality rubber tracks, but most older/cheaper kits have really bad ones. The good/new ones are made from a material that does not melt when it touches plastic glue and where the paint actually sticks well. They still do not look as good as actual metal tracks though. Those are a pain in the ass to assemble but they are amazing to weather.

Get a fine tip paint pen, outline the pattern you're going for (I use them for checkerboards) then using the color you want to paint the pattern in fill in the space without going over the original pattern. You don't have to make it 100% perfect, but at a distance the effect looks good enough for most things. You can get the pens at Hobby Lobby and Michael's, but perhaps other places as well that sells artist supplies.

I would say painting pictures helps more with mini painting than the other way around. Mini painting gives you some understanding of how the paint handles but doesn't teach you much about composition, light, anatomy or perspective. I also think that people who paint pictures are generally more artistic than the average miniature hobbyist.
>>
>>63401743
>Do you think good mini painting skills translates to good regular painting skills?
Sort of... for brush control etc... you still need to have talent Imo, problem with minis is its virtually a painting by numbers canvas, you also have no idea how perspective and light functions.

I tell you what mini painting did help me with... kinda embarrassing really... make up, I'm a software engineer but I make money on the side by doing ladies make up for weddings and such.

I'm relatively new at this. Can I get some tips for basecoating better and more quickly?

I can't figure out what size brush to be using, I've tried a middle-of-the-road one and a large chisel-tip and it seems as though I have better results with the first one but it takes a good ten or fifteen minutes longer to get good coverage for each coat. Duncan seems to use whatever large chisel-tip GW sells to get the paint on in his videos but whenever I use it, I rip the paint more than it feels like I should or just looks shitty. Am I just doing it wrong?

I have difficultly not ripping the paint regardless of what brush I use, should I focus on it or just correct it later when it happens?

Do I thin the paint less on a wet palette?

Makes sure you have a good base coat as white is a close color to it making it hard to see if you most a spot, grey makes it easier.

Take ghost grey from Vallejo best paint for white.

I started this Malifaux Ten Thunders Archer a long, long time ago.
I want a colour scheme reminiscent of a kingfisher.

Then the fucking paint just rubbed off of the primer for some unclear reason, and just will not take.
I got really frustrated adn fucked it off for a while, then picked up this adorably racist little lady from (I think) West Wind at Salute, and decided she was simple enough to smash the colour scheme on and see if I really do want a little band of kingfisher ronin. I'm going to do her hair with successive thin layers of brown and (mainly) black inks to try and give it the shine and self-highlight.

I still like it, but I still can't bring myself to put more paint on this bow cunt.

>>

>>
>>63405113
Yep
Note, some of the boxes DO mention that the models need an undercoat. Other boxes don't. Its erratic.
>>
>>63405113
You're expected to buy primer and a paint set with those. The space marine heroes boxes are more to get normies into the game by selling them a cool space marine sculpt.
>>
If I primed a model black that I planned on painting black do I need to paint black over the black?
>>
>>63405128
>>63405146
>>63405158
That's disappointing. I honestly thought GW were on top of it with their intro to hobby stuff. Their tutorials are often great and their "Citadel Layer System™" is genuinely a really good model to teach new painters (even if it is expensive)

In that case, what's the best colour to prime Blood Angels? Black, White or Grey?

>>63405215

CAN YOU REPEAT THE QUESTION?
>>
>>63405164
Really depends on the shade of black you want and how different the shade that you prime with is from the black you will use for touch ups. If they are different shades, yes. Otherwise, it's entirely dependent on the shade of black you are after and how good you want your model to look. Black is odd in that it's easy at first and then becomes way more difficult when you are going for a higher standard
>>
>>63404903
I've spray primed in winter before and didn't have any issues. Just shake it plenty and keep the can warm.
>>
>>63405209
I think I like the idea of lighter tones. Any idea where I could find a comparison of the priming colour's effects?
>>
Do you anons base before or after painting? laying down some sand before I primecoat, and I fucked up the first couple with too much sand, and getting sand stuck to the feet of the minis.

Now I'm leaving some space around their feet.
>>
>>63405359
I don't even place models on the bases until I've fully painted them.
>>
>>63405349
I don't know personally, and I don't have any to snap pics of myself. Maybe google images? Or wait a bit to see if someone else here can help.
>>
>>63405359
I base before I paint so I can paint the sand before the model so the drybrushing doesn't get all over them. Though I do use an old stiff brush to brush off the sand that gets on the feet of the mini and whatever other stuff on the base.
>>
>>63405374
So do you full paint both your models and bases, then glue them?
>>
>>63405359
After. I don't know anyone that bases before they paint. Also, depending on what surface they're on, getting stuff on their feet isn't the worst thing in the world. Mud tends to cling to feet and shoes, it can dry their, stain cloth, so on and so forth.
>>
>>63405359

Sand before priming, helps seal the sand in. I go around the feet of miniatures with an old sculpting tool whilst the PVA glue is drying and push any sand towards the base.

and the bases in question
mostly greys and browns here with some green sludge, black might actually be better but eh
>>
>>63405417
>>63405449

Black or Steel Legion Drab is the fashion. I personally wouldn't go for a lot of grey, I think it makes the whole miniature look a bit mid-tone.
>>

>>63405417
Goblin green is always the answer
>>
>>63405449
Jesus dude, the weeaborks weren't enough, you had to make a Jin-rork too?
>>
>>63405359
Depending on the layout of the mini, I do the following - I place the legs/model on the base, apply sand. Once it's dry, I put another coat of glue, watered down, over the sand. This has the dual effect of both securing the sand further, and smoothing it out every so slightly, leading to a more uniform appearance (IMO). Plus, I've found it easier to get rid of the excess sand on the model itself after the second coat. It's weird, but it's easier. After that I prime, as of late almost exclusively by brush.
>>
>>63405359
I do it all kinds of ways - make the base first and paint it up and then just pin the painted mini onto it, or glue the mini to a bare base and then add basing materials and then prime, or paint the mini and then add basing materials as a last step (if im using mud or snow paste products)
