The Mets played at 91 win pace after the all star break thanks to strong performances by Wheeler, Conforto, and McNeil.

Realistically we were probably an 82-85 win team before the Cano trade, so that likely pushed to at least a WC competitor alone, while keeping salary neutral, so we have $30-40 mil to spend (although it really should be a lot more). If we sign Pollock, Grandal, and another quality reliever, and make one more trade for a SP, we're definitely in the 95-100 wins range.

Based bauer
I banter the fanatics I banter the bandwagoners I even banter the smooth talkers but Ive never encountered banter the calibur of mine. I banter to my shower I banter to breakfast then I banter back to my room for another day of extraordinary banters. Sometimes I wander outside and banter the kids playing on the street then there parents come out and I pull out the banters, and they hide their kids because the banters too strong for the young. After I banter them the cops come and I observe their banter to lure them into a false sense of security...then I rock out the mega banters and now the swat force came in but mega banter is all I need to dispose of them. It is only in the rubble when I see a worthy opponent of my banter throughout the distance. Its based bauer bringing some sick banters in the flesh himself. We recognize each others banter as supremum and infimum, yin and yang. He pushes the banter, I pull the banter. We then have a banter-off to see who is the last man standing he brings out the legendary bants, something that only a banteratic would be able to comprehend. Its bantermania for miles and miles on end and those left in the rubble can only watch as they bear witness to two legendary banatics going at it. It is two different techniques of banter and only one will prove the alpha supreme banter. He pulls out the big banter and I am shook. I retort with a home made banter myself and I can tell he is visibly shaken. The buildings have collapsed the people are all shaken and time has seemingly sped up as hours turned into days which turned into months. We banter some more and we banter at days end then we do it again til we reach the mangum opus of banter. It is then we both collapse, beaten by banter-but wait- He stands back up. I lay on the ground in fear as he stands over me. Fully expecting a finishing blow banter he does the unexpected and he reaches his hand out to me and utters one phrase: " take my hand, banterbro."

this is pretty optimistic, but if this happened in 2019 the following is true.
1) everyone on the team will improve or at least maintain production (reminder that deGrom turned in one of the all time great pitching seasons) and Alonso will have to hit
2) you would have an incredibly barren farm
3) you would be loaded up with veteran contracts that are likely underwater as soon as 2020 for the foreseeable future and deGrom or Thor walk

2&3 are pretty much a recipe for disaster in that division

The Mets have three pitchers with deep postseason experience. And the fourth is Wheeler who is pitching at a really high level. If you manage to get this team into the playoffs, you have an edge that other teams lack. The Mets have enough tradeable assets that they can add players, and if they want to, they can move those players next year.
All of these players have good trade value:
deGrom
Syndergaard
Diaz
Nimmo
Conforto
I could add others but that would come off as homer-ish. Need to see more from McNeil, Wheeler, etc.
Might as well give it one more try. In baseball, you either want to build up or tear away. The worst are the teams that don't really do anything like the Pirates and the Angels.

>>
Also, I get that a good criticism is that they should trade deGrom now with his value this high. I agree this is a good criticism. You can just as easily make the argument that the Mets should sell for prospects.
If they did this I would be on board too. You just can't be conservative and do nothing.
>>
>>89414438
deGrom is not going to put up the same season, and probably Nimmo won't either. But Wheeler, Matz, Thor, Conforto, Rosario are probably all going to put up better seasons than last year and hopefully the team as a whole will be healthier.

>you would have an incredibly barren farm
Why? Our farm is pretty middling at the moment and I only suggest one additional trade, for an SP. We would continue having a middling farm

>you would be loaded up with veteran contracts that are likely underwater as soon as 2020 for the foreseeable future and deGrom or Thor walk
Right now our only contract past 2020 is Cano so adding the two contracts I suggest (both likely only 3) wouldn't be a big deal, we would then have 3 contracts past 2020 and only Cano in 2022-23. Cano, Grandal and Ramos would likely be about $51 million per year, less then we have on the books now

i'll give you that it was middling (most rankings had them in bottom 10) BEFORE losing Kelenic and Dunn. Alonso graduates, GImenez likely has to be in trade for your SP scenario (or you have to take on another bad contract and sell off middle tier pieces-either way)

the point is, without prospect capital you're stuck with going the FA market route (i.e. buying production at above market rates) or taking flyers on re-treads which is an inconsistent at best way of building a team. Grandal and pollock both turned down QO so you know they are going to be close to 20MM a year for 4-5 years

cano is a lot of money for a player that will unlikely play more than 100 games a year, so you'll have to replace that production/position, in addition to paying the young guys (i do like conforto and Nimmo) through arb. I'm not sure of the contract situations regarding thor/deGrom/wheeler

'm just saying this early "all-in" may be problematic without prospect capital

I will attempt to not be delusional as the 95-100 win guy

The reality of the NL East is that the division is wide open because the Nats lost some important players (Harper, Murphy, Gio). Even if the Braves sustain their performance from last year (If they did nothing they wouldn't their pitching rotation is total garbage) they only won the division with 90. The Mets core of deGrom/Thor/Wheeler/Conforto/Nimmo is absolutely solid and could make playoffs/win division if its sufficiently surrounded with good players, which we now have in guys like McNeil and Cano. If Brodie were able to get two great bullpen arms, maybe sign Pollock and a good catcher, then the Mets could push the high 80s and make the wild card or even the division. As of right now I think the Mets can win like 83-86 games. While deGrom's regression is a concern, the Mets literally went 14-18 in games from the absolute meme run support he recieved which was almost as freakish as his season. Phillies fucking suck and all their prospects are busts, not a single position player broke 2 WAR and their rotation is extremely unimpressive outside of Nola. Braves and Nats are good.

We have a core to win now with, there is absolutely no point in clutching prospects that will come up to the majors when Thor/Conforto/Nimmo etc all leave. I can see us making deGrom a Met for life, but beyond him it seems grim in our chances of keeping guys.
>>
>>89417960

>>
>>89417960
>the Nats lost some important players (Harper, Murphy, Gio).
Gio was replaced with Patrick Corbin. Murphy was hurt for a third of the year, bad for ~100 PA, then great, with bad defense and then traded. If Harper leaves they have Eaton on hand. It's not a 1-to-1, but it's also Robles over Taylor, too.
>>
>>89417790
>>89418073
No bully
>>
What is the proper role for intersexed athletes in professional sports?
>>
>>89418094
Corbin is worse than Gio unironically, he has had aprox one good season.
Murphy was gone yes but the nationals also only won 82 games this year so its not as if they performed despite his absence.
Eaton has the durability of Cespedes at this point and is a significantly worse hitter than Harper, and Robles should be good but he is a defensive not offensive superstar and won't really replace harper. Nats bullpen is also still ass. Still a good team, likely best in division right now, but they are definitely on the down and their window is closing rapidly.

He's been well above average in 4 out of his last 5. You clearly don't know what you're talking about so there isn't really any reason to continue this.
>>
>>89418006
knowing harper is a boras client, no.

but honestly, if some team offers him something insane that clearly won't be matched(ala phillies' owner 'stupid money') then one of them could sign, sure.
>>
Has the yellow color barrier been broken in baseball? If so by whom?
>>
>>89418263
yeah I saw that guy's original post and decided it wasn't worth replying. a lot of words said but ultimately subjective bias came through. as a fan of a team outside of that division and league, the clear pecking order at this point is

Braves
Nationals
Mets/Phillies
>>
>>89418263
If you dismiss my entire argument just based off of a single point that you provided barely anything to dispute you just look like a lazy dumbass.
Out of his 5 full seasons of play Corbin has been below 4 ERA only twice, one of those being pre TJS. He isn't bad yes but his career ERA is 3.91 his WHIP is 1.285. In this season his BAbip had a significant drop of 25 points indicating some luck and Corbin also lost velo on nearly all his pitches but his slider. We have also seen random K-based outbreaks like this totally fail and regress, exactly like Chase Anderson this past year. He did make positive changes, and probably won't be as bad as before this season, but he won't be close to what he had this year, and will probably be worse than Gio was for the Nats which is conceptually who he is replacing.
>>
>>89418323
Its not subjective bias I said the Mets are a mid 80s win team and the numbers back it up, I provided the example that fangraphs projects the Mets for 84 wins.
>>
>>89418391
You're objectively wrong so there's nothing to talk about. Your opinion on anything else doesn't carry any weight. Corbin has been above average, well above, 4 out of the last 5. If you can't understand that, it means you don't know what you're talking about. Quoting his ERA isn't making you look any better. It's just reaffirming what I said about you.
>>
>>89418475
If you had the attention span beyond that of a goldfish and actually read my post you'd see you're a total dumbass, and is reaffirming what I said
>>
>>89418506
But you're objectively wrong. Corbin wasn't lucky. He was unlucky. His peripherals supported an even better year than he actually produced. This is why I keep telling you that you don't know what you're talking about. I would be embarrassed for you, but it's obvious you're brown skinned and low-IQ and it wouldn't do any good. You're too dumb to know what you don't know.

Enjoy your chopped cheese, nigger skin.
>>
>>89418506
You did bring up a good point about Degrom's run support meme. Soto was very impressive in his first year, I expect some regression. It'll be interesting to see how Robles is in the bigs, I think he's going to be a legit plus defender and on base guy. Obviously where harper goes is pretty important in this division.

I think things are very murky in this division, especially before Philly and ATL haven't spent any real money.

>>
>>89418716

>>
>>89418541
It says a lot about how dense you are that you're dumber than a brown skinned low-IQ monkey that you say I am, since you don't actually know what a peripheral is clearly. His peripherals barely changed at all besides his K% jumping 9 points, his BAbip dropping like 25 points, and his hard hit ball% jumping nearly 10 points. The jump in his K% is totally unsupported by anything like batters swinging more at his pitches. Using statcast his xwOBA was worse than his actual wOBA by 20 points. He did add a curveball to his repertoire which is one reason why I think this season wasn't total luck and he is still like a 3.6-3.8 ERA pitcher, but overall he got very lucky and his peripherals don't paint a picture of an ace. Bref for example projects him to have 3.76 ERA next year.
tl;dr you are full of shit and don't know what a peripheral actually is you colossal fucking idiot

>>89418608
thanks for actually reading, the NLE is very murky. Its open, and it will be interesting to watch who wins. I think Philly needs to spend a bunch of money to be competitive in the division though, their position player crop was literally one of the worst in the majors last year and they were completely carried by Nola and their bullpen (which is an inherently volatile thing). I would say its Nats>Braves>Mets>Phils right now counting on the Braves pitching prospects to buoy their honestly bad staff, but its all extremely close and I think anyone could really win the division.

I think if the Nats retain Harper that makes them the clear favorite, right now its a toss up, I'm not sure what the Braves got with Donaldson. The top 2-3 arms for the Nats Mets and Braves is ridiculous though. I do think out of the 4 teams the Phillies are the most likely to regress, some of their position players are a straight up joke
>>
>>89419024
Donaldson should provide at least league average 3B, maybe even better. He’s still Jash after all, not terribly old. The braves main weaknesses are an awful rotation which should be fixed by their farm popping and lack of depth in the pen. Its definitely their division long term because their problems will fix themselves over time at the absolute worst, but for the next year or two it should be open. The fact that the braves ownership doesn’t seem to be willing to spend doesn’t help this, if they had owners as willing to spend as the phillies they could lock up the division for a decade.
>>
>>89419100
Hyperbole, braves rotation wasn’t awful but its not good. Don’t want to cause a shitstorm over adjective choice.
>>
>>89418808
Look at his fielding independent metrics. When he has the exact same season next year and the Mets are staring up in the standings again, remember these posts you made.

B-REF just averages the last few years and spits out a composite.

His FIP was good but as I explained it was an anomaly, as most other peripherals don’t point to a sustainable performance. Your own statistical illiteracy isn’t an argument against me you retard.
>>
>>89419209
It's not an anomaly at all. It's a clear change in pitch usage. It's right in front of your face what happened. His walk% aren't out of line with previous seasons, GB rates and all that are right there. He has leveraged his breaking balls against hitters to generate more strikeouts, playing right into the current environment. It's not a single season thing. He's been good the overwhelming majority of his career and his trend away from 2016's rough year began in 2017 when he was dominant over the second half.
>>
>>89419263
One small change in pitch usage adding an ok curveball doesn’t drop an ERA a full run and FIP even more. The fact that his swinging strike rates haven’t had huge jumps to accompany his great performance is a potential avenue for the regression, therefore outperforming his peripherals. He also in season outperformed his statcast expected metrics, I pointed out opposing xwOBA. The change in pitch repitore should improve him, which i conceded he won’t be above 4 like before but rather a solid middle rotation arm rather than the top rotation guy he is hyped and is now paid to be. Its hyperbole to say he isn’t good I’ll admit but its not hyperbole to say that he’ll he worse than gio was for the nats when they were winning the division every year.
>>
>>89419165
Yeah, I guess if they get Markakis' production from Jash that'll be enough. As far as looking at line ups now, this division is probably going to look so different come February.

Folty is a legit ace, Newcomb is plus, everything else is very meh. Tehran has been such a let down

He had an uptick in pulled balls [presumably into the shift] over 2017 and he had a large jump in O% swings and a significant drop in O% contact. Guys chased because they can't pick up his slider. He also so a large drop in his overall contact rate, almost 10%. Practically identical strand rate to last season. The picture is very clear; a guy who has always been good has figured out how to be deadly. It's going to be Scherzer all over again.
>>
How does he keep getting away with it
>>
Ugh I think the Red Sox are gonna keep Eovaldi, so fucking boring change it up for the #fans
>>
>>89419421
I’d hardly call it a big jump in swinging strike rate since it was only 4 points, but even so to say that this is clearly another second act driven HOF career coming is absolutely delusional especially since Max was already a cy young caliber pitcher for two seasons and was better than Corbin before that at the time of his FA signing, adding to the fact that its extremely improbable almost anyone can just become as good as max scherzer.

>only 4 points
It was a shade over 6% on swings out of the zone, close to 5% drop in contact on those out of zone swings. Chasing more and making less contact. Not a good recipe for the hitter. Guys actually swung less in the zone against him, but more marginally so. Still, it supports that hitters aren't picking up his breaking ball. His similar small increase in first strike % and uptick in pull% over last season support the same. Guys aren't sure and are taking early and then trying to cheat and yanking it.

You don’t have to explain to me how a swinging strike works, its just only 4 points and wouldn’t explain such an explosion of Ks, let alone make him Max Scherzer as you claimed
>>
>>89420505
How are the phillies big winners they barely did anything
>>
>>89421393
I do have to explain it because you keep quoting swinging strikes exclusively and I'm talking about his O swing% -- out of zone. You keep trying to steer it back to general swinging strike percentage, probably because you feel comfortable with that line of argumentation [for whatever reason].
>wouldn't explain such an explosion of Ks
Sure it would. Pitches out of the strike zone aren't good bets for contact. Batters are chasing more and they're missing more when they do chase. That's exactly how you pile up strikeouts.
>>
>>89415649
this is true, really speaks to the old wisdom that the playoffs are just a crap shoot
>>
>>89419165
this is a refreshing thought thread, and it's possible they do regress

sanchez had an unbelievable year but had the lowest hard contact rate in the league, will be hard to replace his innings with younger specks

teheran was inconsistent and abysmal at times

Gausmann looked great down the stretch, but as the NL sees more of him he could regress

Folty looks to be on a clear trajectory upwards

newcomb is young but promising, control will determine his value, could walk 4+ or K 9+ before 5th inning

Soroka looked really good, but again, young

youth is certainly the issue in ATL, could def see them going after an older high end "muh work ethic" type of guy to get that staff in line, which is why the Cleveland rumors make so much sense

I’ve recognized the fact that patrick corbin has thrown balls that cause batters to swing more at blah blah blah you don’t need to keep typing some retarded rhetoric about how to get a fucking strikeout in a baseball game. It literally doesn’t dispute what I’m saying, which is that the increase he had in whatever the fuck swing wherever they do it isn’t large enough to explain his absolutely massive K explosion or enough to support your assertion that he is max scherzer reincarnated before max scherzer even dies. He’ll probably be a good pitcher the averages like 3 WAR (meaning he will have some seasons better and maybe a season or two below from some bad luck/injury/velo drops, not he will get 3 flat every season) a season over the 6 years of his contract but his contract is a big overpay and he doesn’t make the rotation scarier than it was at the start of any year in the past like 6 when it had Gio in his place instead.

Gio for his career has been a higher walk pitcher than Corbin and he seems to be edging in the wrong direction. Gio's absolute best year also fell a full win short of Corbin's best.
>his contract is a big overpay
Serious ball clubs spend money to win. The Nationals have shown they will pay a premium for certainty and demonstrated elite ceilings. Because they aren't worried about debt service on emergency loans to cover shortfalls on a suddenly absent revenue stream of ponzi scheme profits, they don't need to quibble over whether it was one year two many or a couple million more per season than ideal.

Gio’s career had shown a track record of being a consistently good pitcher, his time with the nats averaging to be like a 3.5 WAR guy. I am saying that corbin will average to be worse than that.
Also its never somehow fucking good to overpay a guy, it leaves you less money to pay other good players to play other positions. You are absolutely delusional if you think its somehow a good thing that the Nats overpaid Corbin to such an unecessary degree considering the yankees didnt even make a 5/100m offer and they were probably the nats primary competitor for corbin. The Nats could have more money to spread around and fix that perennially imploding bullpen or have more to try to prevent Harper from leaving.
>>
>>89432014
Mike Catfish
>>
>>89432044
The Nationals don't have the problem of having less money to pay other good players. It's not an issue for serious clubs who aren't managing debt service payments after they were bailed out from a ponzi scheme being uprooted.
>if you think its somehow a good thing that the Nats overpaid Corbin
They got the player they wanted and needed.
>The Nats could have more money to spread around
To a bunch of average players like the Cardinals have made a habit of doing? They aren't really interested in building 85-87 win teams in DC. They also have plenty of money still left.

They don't really. That's why the Orioles are fighting the television deal so hard. DC is extraordinarily wealthy in many areas and increasingly gentrified, Baltimore is a bombed out hellhole and the largest open air drug market in the country. Nobody shows up to Orioles games anymore, they didn't really even when the team was winning. It's the Orioles who are angry about losing the exclusive grip on the DC market by virtue of previous proximity. The Nationals have become one of the premier franchises in MLB in less than 20 years.

"Venezuela: Bad news….criminals with a M.O. putting big boulders and other debris on the highways to rob stopping cars (To avoid such objects) provoked the collision that took away the lives of Jose Valbuena and former major league Jose Castillo."

This is a well-known MO, and there are many highways and roads known for this danger. Sometimes criminals throw small objects at your windshield to shatter it, you stop, and they rob you. Venezuela, A country literally destroyed by communism. I am so pissed. Shit like this pisses me off. Fucking commie shitholes. Better dead than red.

Anybody else think it's now been too many Latin players to "die in car crashes" back in their home countries? Seriously, it happens so much, and that's always the official story. Cubbie fan here. One time I went to a cub-sox game at the cell (now a big red down arrow KEK) and a sox menace went up to me. I asked him how he was enjoying the game and he said "fuck you cubs fucker piece of shit you're in our territory now!" and he dumped beer on me and threw his nachos at me. I calmly asked him why he was being so rude I just wanted to enjoy the ball game and he said "this is a cross town rivalry we aren't here to make friends" then he spit on my face! He then proceeded to turn his hat around and it revealed a 05 sox world series run. He proceeded to cuss me out and said "kiss the rings mothafucka!" (this was before the cubs won it) I tried calming him because I realized that this man was a white sock menace and they have a tendancy of being very volatile creatures. He was not budging though. As I was about to go in for the takedown a young cub fan was walking down the aisle to get a hotdog.Thats when the white sox fan yelled"FUCK CUB COCKROACHES"and pulled out a gun and shot at the fan (missing by a few mm.) He then grabbed the young fan and proceeded to take him hostage.

This was when I felt the power of the cub blood coursing through my veins. In the flash of the lightning in the late dusk sky, I saw his true form flash: It was that of a demon. That of a coward. That of a white sock menace. In that same flash I moved at quick speed to handle the gun away from him and release the kid to safety after I dismantled the gun. The expression on his face changed from a grin of cockiness to a frown of fear. I kicked the man in the gut and he fell to the floor begging for mercy "please I have a family" he muttered, but I wasnt having it. As he attempted to crawl away from me I heard him beg god for help. It was then my most fearful form took over."Ill send you to god motherfucker", I said with a contorted smile. I then kicked him in the mouth and broke his ribs. As the white socks demons gazed upon me in fear, I knew they would soon fall.

people, especially children, can have really faulty memories, and really bad shit like getting molested tends to be exaggerated over time. there's legal and cultural incentives to do so as well when recounting your version of events to others. I honestly can't decide whether I think he's guilty or not, I just know that the more shit like that gets bottled up, the more the truth tends to get distorted in someone's, especially a woman's (see the entire #MeToo movement) mind. I would err on the side of him not being guilty I guess.
>>
>>89442759
I would add that I don't believe he's guilty because of the timing of the accusation going mainstream (at a VERY important point in his life, which is VERY #metoo-ish).
>>
>>89442759
>>89442798
Well wouldn't it make more sense for the parents of the little girl to say that he did do it only after he got to the majors and then demand a king's ransom? The sequence of events seems to chaotic and there is little to no benefit for the parents lying about it. Again this is a little girl we're talking about and likely she wasn't tainted by the #metoo and there is no financial benefit to be had by the timing of the accusation because he was just in high school. If he is innocent I would expect the parents to come out and say that it was a hoax (although it could be too late now because they could be in legal trouble-- unless the girl comes out and says it herself) and then allow him to go to the majors in return for a small percentage of his salary. There is also no social benefit because the girl was kept anonymous which is why I don't think #METOO makes sense
>>
>>89442752
odds very high, someone with a good farm.
>>
>>89442854
where would you expect him to go? Padres, rays, jays,or maybe an ALC team like the twins or white sox?
>>
>>89442759
>>89442798
Almost every woman I ever dated had a story about some asshole doing what he shouldn't have been doing. Attractive women/girls are a target. They get loads of unwanted attention, harassment and are assaulted on the reg, mostly by family members and/or trusted friends of the family.
>>
>>89442916
Do you think a 6 year old would have this much insight? It would have to be a product of the parents and not the girl which is why I don't think it makes sense barring a financial benefit (which is now out of the question)
>>
>>89442297
Is this real?
>>
>>89442945
I think he did it. What the hell are you trying to say?

>>89442994
