We discuss research, offer advice (the best one is to see your family physician), make fun of premeds and shitpost.

Do not engage the clamp poster (https://pastebin.com/aYNv0zFc).

Don't start discussing pro- and anti-vax shit because it degenerates and takes a lot of replies.

Premed here. Coming here cus I need to hear some real shit from you guys.

What are your personal lives like? How happy are you? I find myself studying 8-10 hours everyday (set a timer and everything) and I feel like I'm fucking losing my mind. I mean don't get me wrong I love all the work, but it also makes me feel so lonely from all the shit I miss out on with friends and dating. I'd like to hear from you guys what it's actually like in med school/residency
>>
>>10936296
lmao why are you studying so much
>>
>>10936316
i wanna score in the 100th percentile on the mcat so I'm studying like this over a year away. Not a healthy thing to want but I feel like if I don't do the absolute max i'm wasted potential

Fucking KEK
Anything over a 520 comes down to literal luck on test day
>>
>>10936296
Look I don't know your life and shit but I studied maybe four hours a day for 3 weeks and scored a 520. I understand the desire for max potential but you may be better served by preserving your mental health and actually being a presentable candidate at the interview. You might be some kind of genius that could make a 528 but anything beyond a 521 does not matter for literally any medical school, and you would do better for having learned spanish or something.

Also, if you are capable of getting a 528, which is something only serious talent and hardwork could achieve, be prepared to be incredibly disappointed with your classmates, who will not be as smart or hardworking as you may expect.
>>
>>10936333
He's going to burn out and snap before he even takes the test.
>>
>>10936333
why?
>>
>>10936351
that's awesome dude. You're clearly much smarter than I am. Part of the reason why I'm studying as much and as far out as I am is because I know I'm not naturally smart or exceptionally talented. I've managed to get a 4.0 in undergrad but that's only been because I studied a ton in general and was super proactive for everything. I appreciate the advice
>>
>>10936358
lmao this nibba starting to sound like Dr. Death
>>
>>10936358
Just think about why you are doing this. If it is to help people, you clearly have enough dedication right now to do it, and if that is the case, know that 512 (83rd pecentile), especially with a 4.0, is enough to guarantee acceptance to a state medical school. This also means you should take some breaks and enjoy social opportunities when they come. Avoid thinking in terms of "Oh I will be happy after this MCAT/interview/test" because becoming a physician means that there will be no end to the next stressful thing. Focus on finding happiness in the moments, because the journey will never be over.

If you are doing this for greatness or prestige, reconsider things. There is no greatness in medicine except after years and years of work, being not only smart but also a good person to your patients. A dream being great will not last you.
>>
>>10936389
I really appreciate that, thank you. That's great advice

What the heck is going on with 40-60 year olds now a days? I have so many admitted to hospital for Korsakoff syndrome, CHF, bad COPD and other illness that makes them so de-conditioned that they look worse than the 80+ year olds admitted with minor issues. Heck, I even have one 65 year old guy who opts to wear adult diapers now because he's too lazy to walk to the bathroom with his IV pole, and his diagnosis was a simple cellulitis. >>
>>10937148
I'm not an expert on DTCA but I haven't come across any in NZ at all despite the fact it's completely legal. I think it could be partially due to the fact that we import our medications so it would have to be the US doing the advertising, and also that NZ consumers are particularly vocal about it being a stupid practice.
>>
>>10937179
So I guess we can pretty much say the US is the only country advertising for drugs. As a euro it never really made sense.

>>
>>10937864
was really good friends with a brilliant chick in junior/senior year of undergrad, she volunteered at a hospital part time, a poor free hospital. to the best of my recollection:
Stuff up asses: 4, including 1 lightbulb
Stabbings: 10-13 or so, usually gang related, none fatal
Shootings: 5 or 6, 2 were fatal, including one child
she often mentioned mentally ill stories, a lot of people are mentally ill in hospitals apparently, or at least they stick out and cause a ton of work. Also obese patients and moving them, apparently that's a huge issue. fun times

It's clamping the umbilical cord after delivery at two points to stop blood flow so it could be cut.
>>
>>10942119
Why wouldn't you just let the blood finish flowing before you cut? That blood has stem cells and vitamins baby needs to be healthy and strong. Is this some kind of American thing like cutting baby dick off?
>>
>>10942130
Immediate clamping is indicated for neonates that need intubation and other conditions that need urgent care. The WHO and basically every single OBGYN society recommends waiting for umbilical pulsations to subside before clamping.
>>
>>10942183
>The WHO and basically every single OBGYN society recommends waiting for umbilical pulsations to subside before clamping.
Yeah but they also don't recommend mutilating baby dick yet everybody does it in America. Most hospitals in America ALWAYS clamp IMMEDIATELY after the baby is out because that way the umbilical cord sells for a higher profit.

Hello friends I am high school student interested in medicine.

And yes before you say anything I acknowledge that anything and
everything that I have done up to this point has meant jack shit in
comparison to actual med school and even undergrad.

anything you have to someone like me?
>>
>>10942255
lol my country has free college tuition and I don't have to have a college degree in order to enter med school, its just a really hard test, but if you're smart enough you can get in on your first or second year of trying. Also med school is only six years since we actually learn biology in highschool.
>>
>>10942287
Its ok dude, just do whatever you like. Med school sucks sometimes, but its also fun, its just a school. I didnt have to do an undergrad because the system is different in my country but I dod have to go through very intense studying to get into med school and thats really heavy for a teenager. So just live your life, honestly. Just take care of your mental health and keep your motovation high. Hope you like getting really tired, I kinda do.

No that is a huge waste of time. Get a degree in something unrelated to medicine with a pre-med designation. Memes aside, marijuana is shit. Let them smoke it so they will come to us with chronic bronchitis or COPDs , they're doing it themselves, no one forced them to smoke it. Strong drug addicts on the other hand are totally different. I don't know how it is to be addicted physically to something and I don't even want to experience it but snorting/injecting substances that do a shitload of harm to your body just to make you "feel high" is plain stupidity.

is this the thread to ask? if not, sorry
looking for advice on a botched toe
history: my toenails fall off every few months-every few years; doctors ran tests when i was a kid and said they didn’t know what was wrong. it all started after a stage board at school was dropped on them at school. i think maybe the thing that makes the nail grow (matrix?) is damaged in both big toes or something.
fast forward to recently:
for uni grad pics my mom wanted me to look nice and get a pedicure with fake toenails. i got one; stubbed my right toe nail and it was bruised/bloody. removed the acrylic nail with a nail drill; natural nail fell off on its own a month later. perfectly fine now.
left nail still had the acrylic nail on and i stubbed it as well with no blood but was sore. tried to do the same process on it, but couldn’t remove all of the acrylic nail and ended up skimming some of the skin on the toe bed. it’s been like this for a while and i want it to come off already; nail and the bit of acrylic remaining.
also: i have had 2 nails removed by doctors before; both of them left trauma to the toe. in one instance the whole nail was ripped off with no numbing and i couldn’t walk for several days, the other instance the doctor wrapped the toe with the wrong gauze which healed into the wound and i had to pull bits of gauze out from my skin, causing me to distrust doctors near my toes.
but i still seek some advice on what to do if anyone has ideas on how to help naturally remove the nail pictured.
i have been soaking in epsom salt.

I'm more concerned about the amount you stub your toes and that your University apparently takes pictures of your bare feet than anything else in this incredibly discursive post.

>>
>>10944840
i’m outside a lot, and here it’s normal for parents to pay a private photographer to take full-body pictures of you in your cap and gown, not your feet. she wanted me in open-toed heels and a dress in the picture so thus the pedicure.

But being a doctor means your employer is the state, which offers security. You also are essentially your own boss and you don't have to suck dick
>>
>>10946840
it's not a free ride. outside of being a surgeon, your manner and charisma are going to have a big impact on returning patients. plus, people are absolutely insufferable, and unless you genuinely like people, and genuinely care about figuring out what the problem is with them and how to fix it, then you're going to resent it.

there's a balance between going to school for art because you like art, and going to school for neurosurgery because you want to make money.
>>
>>10946848
It's the doctors that are insufferable pricks (and generally useless, outside of surgeons who actually provide solutions)

not really the way it works.
you can go to trade school right out of high school and weld pipelines for 125$ an hour if you luck out, but the work is fucking arduous and grates away at both your physical and mental health.
the same goes for medical doctors, even nurses in certain fields. if it's six in the morning and you've been operating for the last ten hours, and the patient dies, and now you've got to worry about a malpractice suit, and you're worrying about every document you signed recently and every report you read and everything you said to the patient.

that's an extreme example of course, it's more like it's the weekend and you're on call and you have to rush up at 4 in the morning, but it's ALL of it. it all piles up on you and just fucking grinds you down over and over. it's like the sword of fucking damocles sometimes.

How long do pupil dilating drops used by ophthalmologists for examining the eye last? They said I'd be "a few hours" but it's been 35 hours and they're still not getting small when I expose my eyes to more light, leading me to feel blinded just going outside.
>>
>>10946877
depends on the drops, depends on the dose. atropine for example can last a day or so. maybe you metabolize the drug slowly, or maybe you've had stroke. most probably you're fine, and you could go back to the office if you're really concerned. give them a call. what's the worst outcome?
>>
>>10946836
The average doctor easily makes more money than an average graduate of any those.
>>
>>10946891
sure, but there's more to it than the salary. get a petro eng degree or CS degree in four years, it's not unreasonable to make 90-120k. whereas a doctor has four more years of med school, plus four or more years of residency, all of which cost money and time.
if you've got a free ride, by all means go for it. but if you're putting yourself in debt to become a doctor, it's going to take a while until you break even with someone who was working 8 years before you even started.

I have that. Presumably you're using soap with hot water, that destroys the protective acid mantle on the surface of the skin and the water increases skin permeability, those two things tend to irritate sensitive skin. Yeah, the passing grade is 10 out of 20, but to be competitive and get into second year you have to get a much higher score (it’s a bit lower for pharma and dentistry, but still very difficult overall)
Those who fail can directly get into a second year of a bachelor’s degree of their choosing (pretty much anything scientific, since 1st year med school here has a lot of physics and chem just for the sake of making things harder).
So those who fail aren’t completely fucked, but it’s still harsh. You get one try at your dream and if you fail, sucks to be you I guess.

It’s still pretty fucking selective, especially since there’s no second try (anymore).

So, I've been on pediatrics for a bit this summer and I had the chance to visit the peds surg ward. I've found out that 3 of the attendings weren't actually working there but they came from US to practice here?? I've asked the doctor I shadowed why they came exactly to Romania and he just replied with: "To get more experience, they only do 2 or 3 types of surgeries there in which they specialize, they just want to broaden their area of expertise a bit" - Not exactly the quote but something along the lines.

Is it true that murican surgeons do only 2 or 3 types of procedures and "specialize" in them? Let's say for ortho -> hand surgeries only, etc? I'm asking this because so far, every surgeon I met operated a huge variety of sufferings (Especially gen surg/peds surg)

Hey guys.

Any orthopedic bros in here?
So, when I curl my right knee all the way (as in when I squat, or do a flamingo stretch) it kind of hurts. I can feel that somethings not right. My left knee joint doesn't hurt at all.

I used to be able to pop my knees by stretching them that way, but now my right knee refuses to pop, it just extremely hurts when I try, so obviously I don't do that anymore.

My joint only hurts when curled like this, normal activities don't cause any pain at all.

Any idea what part of my knee I fucked to caused this?
Is there anything that can be done to heal it?

Been there for a few months as internship, so not some ultra expert but anyway. The same cycles of therapy over and over, the same little complications. Since it's structured as a multi unit together with surgeons and all other specialits reunions are relatively interesting compared to an internal briefing. Some rare tumors and rare presentations so you get to examinate a few peculiar clinical presentations. Probably as repetitive as any other field. Research is more interesting than non oncology fields, probably.
A lot of it depends on your center, how big it is and its quality and specialization.
Personally i think the psicological aspects are completly forgotten by clinics and everything is left to psicologists. Most terminal patients don't even know they are about to die but apparently this is the very standard approach in souther europe, opposed to the anglo style where they tell you everything down to the point of being traumatic (if any anglosphere med could confirm it would also be interesting to talk about).
So, good: interesting topics; very variable clinical presentations; job won't lack; research good; social respect; biodrugs field starting to work good might make them boss in the future (wild bet tho).
Downs: patients come with the diagnosis so it's not like it's challenging in that, you just adjust therapy (which is challenging); might end up as closet palliativist depending on the center; surgeons and radiotp stealing your job and generally preferred over onc to the public; might consume you over time; repetitive and frustrating to see your patients always die after a couple decades of work exp.

Anyone down to start a Xanax Ethnostate? Seriously we could build a utopia in less than a decade of we all didn't have that dread filled existential anxiety on overdrive every single day of our lives, it would help the white race as a whole.

>tfw smart enough to study medicine, but too shy and socially awkward for it
I had the grades, but I read up the entry requirements and it said I would need to do some type of roleplay event where I will have to stand up and answer how I would react in certain situations, so I didn't apply.

>>

That’s too bad, you could’ve gone into one of the autismo specialties. Radiology is the obvious one, but pathology sounds like heaven for true introverts. I think those two are the only ones where you can afford to be a social retard though.
>>
>>10953196
The thing is, I'm not a social retard in most cases, for example, I am okay with women and I have a gf. I have friends. But when I am put on the spot and about to be judged for my intelligence/competence by people in positions of power over me, I always turn into a little bitch.

Then you're not shy and socially awkward. What you're experiencing is normal stage fright and you're stupid for allowing it to influence your future.

How do I get over it?

Yeah you’re not shy, you just have trouble with public speaking just like most normal people. You get over it by actually doing it, I suppose.

Call the medical establishments before selecting and ask if there is a cash discount (sometimes, 10%)

I am a radiologist, I work shorter hours than normal, probably get much less work than any other doctor would, and I still hate this fucking job, I hate waking up every morning, I hate spending my time in there, and every afternoon I am just ridiculously tired. I hate doing 24h shifts and I hate planning my vacation days almost a full year in advance. I feel like every advantage possible within the occupation is stacked in my favor, but I can't help it but feel contempt for it anyway. I don't feel like I have anything worth looking forward to in work or life in general. Is this normal?

The thing is, every other spec seems even less appealing at the moment. I don't like dealing with dried-up alzheimer mummies and piss-flavored drunk morons and I find myself wishing pox upon most of them. Dealing with 30 of those people daily saps my will to live. I have issues beyond my job. I have a strained relationship with my parents and nowadays I feel even like my mother somewhat subtly and insidiously forced me into med school when I didn't really want to.
