>tfw a biology student tells me the purpose of life is to reproduce
>>10718058statistically the gays are having way more sex than you. explains the seething
I'm a biologist and I think life doesn't have a purpose, design, function or meaning, but it doesn't mean life isn't important, beautiful or valuable.
>>10718039I always laugh when people with science backgrounds say that while saying philosophy is sophistry and a waste of time. Don't conflate teleos with function.
Reproduction might not be the purpose of life, but it is the biological imperative.
>>10718039its true, nothing will make you happier than having a loving wife and kids
>>10718389This is unironically true and also the meaning of life.
>>10718309>important, beautiful or valuable. Those words are all meaningless from a scientific perspective.
>>10718389Ideally, at least three loving wives.
>>10718039>he can't tell the difference between his life and Life
>>10718039If there is any purpose at all I would say its evolution. It explains our relatively short life spans, to get rid of the old models. It explains why things like gene crossover happen. There wouldn't be a point in reproducing if everyone were clones, we would have never made it past single cells.
>>10718063more sex doesn't mean more reproduction janny>>10718309life goes against nature because it increases the level of order of the universe
>>10718524>life goes against nature because it increases the level of order of the universeNo it doesn't.
When a physics student says that the purpose of life is to process chemical energy into thermal radiation
>>10718392scientific perspective is meaninglessIts all crazy its all false its all a dream its alright.
>>10718039I mean he's not wrong, so... do you just hate it when other people are right?
>>10719131He is wrong, because the question of the meaning/purpose of life isn’t a question about biology.
>>10718039> tfw a nurse tells you that doctors are the most important people in this world because both rich and poor people get sick.Sometimes people in medicine really overestimate their importance. I mean, if they stopped to think for a moment they would understand that
farmers are the most important. Maybe one day you will die due to a disease, but you can die much more quickly by not having anything to eat.
>>10719147>meaning/purpose of life isn’t a question about biology. The meaning/purpose of a biological system isn't about biology? Do explain.
>>10719154>both rich and poor people get sickBoth rich and poor people are the same in a million other ways too. That's a really bizarre statement for someone to make if true and not just paraphrased in a weird way from what was actually said.
>>10719156No him, but you're the one who has to explain. Why do you think philosophical concepts like purpose have anything to do with the study of what organisms are and how they operate? You might say the "purpose" of an ear is to take in sound waves and produce useful behavioral responses, but that's anthropormphizing a mindless sequence of natural events that eventually resulted in ears existing and has nothing to do with what biology covers.
>>10718039>when the chemistry student says absolutely nothing and just explodes._.
>>10718389Bullshit. Women are worthless and stupid and kids are annoying trash that only makes your life go down the drain.
>>10719171Nah, it wasn't paraphrased. After that sentence he actually made an example about how an important priest had to get undergo a surgery because of a particular sickness. Moreover he proceeded to say that doctors are almost saints while every person who is rich is surely a bastard who destroyed society. I remember that I replied by presenting some examples such as Warren Buffett's donations and, while he didn't know who Warren Buffett was, his answer was “He surely did bad things otherwise he wouldn't be rich”.
>>10718392>what is sociology
>>10719178>philosophical concepts like purposeNot him but lol why are you in /sci/? The function of the eurkaryotic system is to live long enough to reproduce and then do so. That's literally what all life is designed to do. Get out of here with you shit degree.
>>10719208That only determines what the subjective view of people's perceptions of importance, beauty, and value is.
>>10719192" typed Anon angrily, his painful memories resurfacing again. How could anyone be so naive?! He would never fall in love again no matter what, he reassured himself. But then, one day...
>>10719192I know, but I guess human nature kicks in and gives the suffering meaning. Meaninglessness is usually worse. If you can find meaning without, then I agree that it's an alright choice for you. Most can't.
>>10719221Life is not designed. There’s no intention or will behind selection and mutation.
>>10719343There are evolutionary pressures however, that result in specific functionality. That functionality, and what causes an organism to excel, is the ability to reproduce. Reproducing and surviving long enough to do so is the purpose of every biomechanism that makes up an organism.Sorry your kiddie degree taught you that anyone else is interested in semantic circle jerks, but scientists understand this fact.
imagine unironcially thinking cells actually want something or that organisms purposefully and meaningfully choose a path. imagine being so retarded to believe in choice. high tier retardation is why I didn't do bio, despite genetics really intriguing me.
>>10719156Correct, the question of the meaning of life is nothing to do with biology, even though, yes, we are biological organisms. You know this already, because no matter have naive you are, you know that when philosophers discuss the meaning of life, the discussion is nothing to do with the propagation of DNA. Again, it’s a philosophical (moral) question.
>>10719228Maybe we just think differently but I think basic social constructs are embedded in our DNA. They would then act more like an emergent property (forming more complexity and definition over time and population) rather than to simply assume opinions are byproducts of free will. So in this particular example, it is beneficial for a species to have a mostly positive view of life (such as being beautiful, important, or valuable) and thus applicable and rooted in hard science. I see exactly what you're trying to say, and if I were full nihilist I'd agree with you, but I think the difference in our thinking is you separating so-called "subjective thought" from nature's intentions.
>>10719384(And if you think that all we are machines for propagating DNA, then you think that there is *no* meaning to life)
>>10719384>when philosophers discuss the meaning of lifeWhy are all these non-scientists in /sci/? Begone with your social studies degrees.

>>10719371>Reproducing and surviving long enough to do so is the purpose of every biomechanism that makes up an organism.Evolution doesn't have a purpose / intent. >>10718524Your conception of nature sounds flawed
>>10718039Its true though ?All life exists to continue perpetuating itself.
Okay you dumb dumbs, let me explain this in a way you can understand.Reproduction, just like sleeping or eating, is just a randomly evolved mechanism that HAPPENED to sustain the existence of the organism, which in itself does not have a purpose whatsoever. The organism survived NOT BECAUSE IT CHOSE TO, but simply because it happened to be alive due to all of the evolved mechanisms that allowed this to be possible. To say that reproduction is the purpose of life is equivalent to saying that eating food or sleeping is the purpose of life. Without them, reproduction wouldn't be possible, and vice versa. They are equally important to the organism and, at the same time, equally unimportant in the eyes of nature. Some organisms can live for a thousands years, and if something like this is universally easy to achieve in our universe, the mechanism of reproduction wouldn't even be necessary. With that said, you people really need to have a better understanding of natural selection and science in general.*tips*
>>10719156Youre just unaware philosophy exists or what?>>10719221function /= purposePurpose implies intent.

>>10719192Have sex incel
>>10719769More precisely, life attempts to survive and reproduce because only that kind of life can maintain its presence. (The survival instinct became a universal fact because those lifeforms who didnt have it just died out.)OP is a faggot though, because "purpose" isn't real. This abstraction of social instincts that we call "rule of law" is also not real. The only real laws are the laws of physics.
>>10720333>Reproduction, just like sleeping or eating, is just a randomly evolved mechanism that HAPPENED to sustain the existence of the organism^This. There's a big difference between deciding to do something for a purpose vs. evolutionary biology which is a retrospective look at whatever emerged and persisted long enough for us to know about it.Calling that purpose is literally backwards thinking. It's not that an organisms does what it does to not die out. It doesn't die out because of what it does, which might sound similar but it's really not.e.g. Bacteria don't purposefully build up a resistance to antibiotics. What happens is the antibiotics kill most of the bacteria and it's a tautology whatever *didn't* get killed probably had some traits that happen to make it less vulnerable to those antibiotics than other instances of bacteria are.Nature's just throwing a bunch of shit on the wall and some of it inevitably sticks.
