You are Colors Eriksdotter, Warlock Knight of the Spring Court, and leader of your so-called Heathens by frequent accusation. You're really gonna have to sit down and have that talk with the Rook about that at some point; who had the bright idea to elect the Elemental, of all people, as the one in charge?

You point at Vasquez with your entire hand. "Don't talk to my friend like that, one. That's rude and even I know that. But, two, I'd be asking to hear a damn good reason. This is Court business. We're trying to be good neighbors and keep you in the know."

James starts to growl under his breath, only to stop when Vasquez makes a small gesture with her hand at him. "Nobody asked you either, wolf-boy," she chides in a gentle tone, before turning her attention back to you. "Bold claim, Eriksdotter. Some folks might think you're putting yourself above the law."

"The law isn't ready for the Lost yet, and we're not ready for the law," you answer. "We need time to get there, and that means cleaning house. I thought the Valks knew that?"

Agent Vasquez takes a deep breath; she waves her brownie around in vague motions before she finally nods. "Yeah, we do know that. Part of why we decided to come out of the closet with all of you was to make that transition easier, to do our jobs. Task Force: VALKYRIE's remit is to protect American citizens and American interests from extra-normal danger and corruption. You're Americans, you count, and those things that come boiling out of truck stop mirrors are definitely extra fucking normal. It's been useful to us to remain an intelligence agency so that our more legally questionable activities can fall under the umbrella of national security."

"Which they do," James adds, to the general agreement of the rest of the Valks.

"I sense a 'but'," Vickie says in a wary voice.

Vasquez nods. "And it's a big, jiggling 'but' too. You might know, and I might know, that you can't just flip from centuries of being accountable to almost no one and being unable to live your truth to being regular citizens overnight, but the law doesn't necessarily agree. The FBI is going to be rolling out an agency to advise on and enforce magical law, coming into power in January, and the jurisdiction fights are about to be an unholy bitch. So if you wanna do this, all this, here in Philly? There's no room for mistakes. It's perfect or nothing. Can you give us perfect, if we help?"

You look around at your friends. "What's perfect in this context?"

Agent Michelle clears her throat. "We're off to a good start already, actually. Not wanting Andy Nubis dead is a good look. Ideally we avoid violence at all, but..."

James interjects. "In the perfect world, this is resolved silently. No recriminations, no accusations, no one did anything wrong as far as the public is concerned. Andy Nubis steps down and moves somewhere else, or maybe joins up with us. I dare say VALKYRIE can tame that little bitch. The Lost, we can't afford to be seen as violent criminals. People won't understand. VALKYRIE has been looking the other way as some of, say, Autumn's worse have been pushed off of cliffs or gone for Hedge journeys they don't come back from, but this is a pretty public figure."

"We can do it," you assert.

"You sure?" James presses.

The Rook coughs into his sleeve, garnering everyone's attention. "We're sure," he rasps. "Philadelphia will bend or it will break. We are not youngbloods, and we are not here for revenge. Now, what of the Fetch?"

Ricky stops chewing on his coffee cup's rim. "Handled. Erik and Astrid Moore have signed the appropriate forms and been briefed on why we keep Fetches secret and what their expectations are. What you do with that now is your own business, though if I were you I'd talk to them about it because that whole thing is profoundly fucked up. Your sister will have the option to be informed when she comes of age, so just try to sit on that for a good solid decade."

You take a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Alright. What are your expectations for keeping in contact?"

"Different question," James says. "How are you handling your exile from the City of Brotherly Love? Do you have someone to overturn it?"

"I believe so. Which means I'm going to be presented before the Freehold sometime in the next couple of days so that can happen..."

"We have data to compile in the meantime," Vasquez says. "Contact us by phone once that happens and we'll swap notes. It'd be helpful in calming our superiors if you could have at least the outline of a plan of action as well."

There's agreement around the room. Hands are shaken as Vasquez finishes her brownie and produces a seventh, and then the Valks take their leave.

("Why do you get all the brownies?" Ricky.

"One of us resolved the political dispute in the land of Betsonia and it wasn't you.")

Your parents and sister are still out of the house.

Fancy's stomach growls after a moment, and the dancer blushes.

"Now you've gone and done it," Forum says; Vickie is already standing up and heading towards the fridge. Your Troll friend drags the shopping list entirely to his part of the table and starts adding things to it.

"You don't have to -" Fancy begins, and the stops when she gets a withering glare from Vickie. "Okayfeedme."

"That's what I fuckin' thought," Vickie says with a sniff as she returns to raiding the fridge.

"Seriously what is with her and that?" Fancy asks in a low voice.

"You realize literally none of us are ever going to ask her, right?" Forum answers flatly. "If you want to know and/or die so badly, you go right on ahead. Vickie will talk when she's ready."

"She's like a were-grandma," Erin comments. The joke catches Forum halfway through a sip of coffee and he obligingly starts choking to death on it. The Rook thumps him on the back while your Troll friend tries to breathe.

You clear your throat to get the attention of the table. "War meeting. Everyone should get familiar with the major players as I remember them so we've got some idea of what's going on and what to expect."

Forum tears the grocery list and three extra pieces of paper out of his notebook, sets them aside, and starts on a fresh page. "Hit me."
>>
>>3090318
Shipmate Sally gets up from the table and drifts over to Vickie to assist with chopping vegetables; the Darkling's hit her fallback of just throwing a shitload of pasta in a pot and making a good sauce for it.

"So you've met Emily Rose already," you begin. "I don't know a lot about her, because...I kinda...was a dick. But she's kept Spring afloat all this time without getting absorbed by Winter or dying off. She's got the smallest Court but a lot of personal power, big rep as one of Philly's eminent sorcerers. She and her Court are aligned with Mariah the Nerd's Winter."

Fancy looks around the table. "I...still don't get how nicknames work in your whole...isn't that a little rude?"

You look at Forum, Forum looks at Erin, Erin turns her head at the Rook, and all of you shrug. "Is how it is," the Troll says. "She's the Queen of one whole side of a civil war here in Philly, if she had an objection she'd make it."

"That," you agree. "Which, speaking of, Winter is Philly's biggest Court and probably the most politically powerful unless the Unmasking has purged their contacts. Last time I was here, though, Mariah was on the city council and her boys work up and down City Hall. Winter doesn't really have to do much to feed in Philly aside from bask in how poor and miserable everyone is, and they're tight-lipped on what they actually do with their day-to-day. Andy used to get his jollies torching small businesses they own and raiding their safe houses."

"So what's the Nerd like?" Erin asks.

"She's an owl."

"Like a Beast?" Forum.

You shiver at distant memories. "No. Not like a Beast. Some kinda Darkling. Quick, quiet, and without pity. I've never seen her fight but she sent five of our boys back to us too crippled to ever pick up a sword again. They had these punctures from her talons, right in the nerves..."

The Rook manages to clear his throat without devolving into a coughing fit. "I understand your feelings about the King of Jackals," he rasps. "I would ask that you try to set them aside for a moment and characterize the burgeoning war in Philadelphia. What is Summer's grievance?" You open your mouth, shut it, and rest your chin in your hand. "Take your time," your Wizened friend encourages. "This is going to be important."

"It's..."

A long story.

Winter's been ascendant in Philadelphia since there's been a Philadelphia. The city is a hotbed of tragedy and violence, to say nothing of lost opportunity, lost pride, lost importance. During the 70s there were billboards saying "Philadelphia isn't as bad as Philadelphians say it is", for fuck's sake. Did Winter intend to effectively strangle the other Courts, keeping them relatively powerless? Maybe not. Maybe so. Maybe it changed from Crown to Crown, but at the end of the day you couldn't make a move at any time of year without double-checking it past Winter. Joy drained from the Freehold like water through a sieve.
>>

>>3090330
And then there was Andy Nubis. His daring leadership, his defiance of Winter, offered an unexpected second option. Early victories against hobgoblins haunting the local Hedge, marked for avoidance by Winter rather than extermination, emboldened his Court and let Summer recruit youngbloods from the bottom ranks of the Coldest Court. Almost overnight, the Court of Wrath swelled in number and began challenging common practice.

"I wish I could say that Mariah started it, but Andy drew first blood," you tell the others as you work your way through the story. "She sent one of her Squires, kid named Richie Rich, to tell Andy to calm his shit and to not endanger the secrecy that protected the Freehold. Andy broke both the kid's arms and sent him back to Mariah. Winter retaliated by poisoning three of Andy's enforcers, put 'em in comas for months. Shit just got uglier from there. Winter's good at not getting caught, but when they do get caught..."

The Rook nods. "I understand entirely. The question I interrupted you for is simple in form, but complex in execution. The easiest way to resolve this problem in the short term is to restore Mariah the Nerd's Winter to its ascendancy. Are you comfortable with that?"

"Why not try to put everyone on equal footing?" Fancy asks.

Forum looks up from his notes. "You can't. Or, well...it'd be a bitch," he corrects. "It's not just a numbers game, even if you could persuade the whole Freehold to redistribute Court membership. It has to do with Glamour."

The Rook nods. "Philadelphia is overrun with Wrath and Sorrow. It naturally makes things more difficult for the Courts of Fear and Desire. Easy access to magical resources let Summer and Winter invest in consolidating their power and acquiring even more resources. Unless the character of the city itself were to change, which is very definitely not in the scope of our mission or something we could do without emigrating here permanently, they will remain the most powerful Courts."

"But we could maybe get Mariah to agree to share power," you muse. "Push for a peace treaty, a restructuring of how the Freehold is run. Some kinda...I know there's a word for this..."

"Constitution," Erin supplies.

"Yeah, that. But I honestly don't know if she'd go for it. Why should she? We're here to eliminate her rival as it is."

The Rook gives you a one-armed shrug. "There can always be another King of Jackals. But you're right, it's the more difficult sell."

Mariah's seen what the costs can be of an unbalanced Freehold now. Maybe she'll be more willing to consider something other than absolute victory.

You tap your chin for a moment, but ultimately the decision seems pretty clear. "Our remit is to ensure something like the attack that my...that Susan...led doesn't happen again. I think putting things back to the way they were won't do that. It might be a harder sell to get people to voluntarily share power in practice instead of just in theory, but...it's...the job we're here for."

The Rook nods. "I agree, but all the cards needed to be on the table. Does anyone have an objection, or an alternate plan?"

"We could move the whole Freehold to Betsonia," Forum suggests. "Suit said they just handled a major political upheaval."

You snort; Vickie rolls her eyes from the pasta pot with the faintest grin.

"I'll begin sketching out a proposal," the Rook continues. "I'll be able to refine it after more time with the citizens of the Freehold. Forum, Erin, would you be willing to assist?"

Erin almost startles. "Me?"

The Rook turns his one working eye to her; her confused expression is reflected in its screen. "Would you prefer I didn't act as if you have the skills and experience you labored so hard to earn?"

"I..." Erin trails off mid-sentence. You scoot your chair a little closer to her, offering your presence; she leans against your shoulder in a slow movement. "I. I'm not sure? No one's ever asked me."

"More people should," the Rook rasps. "You are Spring. Your past is your own affair."

The front door opens, and Dad's voice calls out from it: "We brought food!"

Vickie throws the wooden spoon she's using into the sauce pot. "God damn it!"

What follows involves much re-arranging of the kitchen (again), Vickie finishing her spaghetti and sauce, and a great deal of swapping contact information. Everyone sits down to a combination of the spaghetti and sauce, with a truly staggering amount of White Castle because of the many things your Dad has ever owned or created, culinary standards are none of them.

"So is the rest of your day clear?" your Dad asks. "You've had a long trip, you should relax."

You start trying to hastily suck the noodle in your mouth down your throat only to discover that it's evidently just an infinite strand of pasta. Sometime in the next age of Man you finally swallow. "Yeah, I think so. Sorry about everything happening...you know...at the same time. These first few days are gonna be hectic like I said..."

Your sister tugs on your sleeve. "You wanna come see Betsonia? Me and Dad built it, it's my kingdom!"

You look at everyone else for a moment.

You look back over at your kid sister and her eyes are so wide.

"I'd love to see Betsonia," you tell her, glancing over at Dad for a moment. "I heard Agent Vasquez helped you with it a little today."

"She did!" Betsy sits up super straight and puts on her most serious face. "A feast of brownies was baked to reward her."

Dad and Astrid smile. You just about manage not to laugh. Vickie looks like she's going to melt where she's sitting; the Darkling's almost as wide-eyed as your sister is, and she won't stop shaking Forum's shoulder to make sure he's paying attention.

"Right after dinner, I'll wash up and you can show me." Your sister nods at you and starts eating with indecent haste. You look at the others for a moment and then start eating faster yourself.

Y'know, you might like kids. Who knew?

Fido follows you from the table as you set your plate and cup in the sink and wash your hands (Astrid reminds Betsy to wash hers before she plays with her toys), then head upstairs to Betsy's room.

It is quite colorful. Betsy drags you past a hand-carved wooden bed (made by your grandfather for your grandmother, and entirely too large for this tiny girl) coated in stuffed animals, and you duck your head beneath a variety of paper mobiles and decorations that have been strung from the ceiling, all of them signed BETSY in big, childish handwriting. There's a writing desk with a chair in front of it and some schoolbooks (the folders probably have her homework; they're a bunch of colors too) and a low, long table that contains what can only be Betsonia.

The city Betsy and Dad built is a wild, half-mad thing; some buildings are made from Legos, some are hand-carved models, a few are fish tank accessories or toys that have been repainted in bright, slapdash colors. Little hand-made signs of cardboard hang from the buildings and name the streets (a lot of them just have people names - friends of Betsy's?), and little Lego people, action figures, dolls, and figurines populate the streets.

A small model train winds its way through the town. Barriers block the roads when it moves through them. Sailor Moon is in the front compartment, wearing a tiny engineer's hat.

A model hill leads up to a second, smaller table where an Easy Bake Oven is plugged in, though not currently in use. It has been done up like a cathedral.

"This is Betsonia!" Betsy says helpfully. "I want another table for Christmas so it can get bigger. Dad made this building, and that one, but I made this one, and..."

You get the guided tour. Betsonia is a princedom ("Not a kingdom," your sister says firmly) ruled by Princess Betsy and the Baking Church. People there are happy and all make their own bread by hand every day, but sometimes people get very upset about things and it's Princess Betsy's job to make them happy again. It has police officers, and firefighters, and a factory where they make Lego bricks, and a downtown.

Showing off the hand-carved library leads into showing you her books (she has a lot of fantasy, and it seems she's inherited your old Redwall collection), and she flits back over to the table to show you tiny rooftop gardens with plastic plants in little patches of actual dirt.

"Why's it made out of so many things?" you ask her after awhile; you can't stop moving around the tiny model city and staring at the attention to detail. Betsy didn't make everything here, but nothing is untouched by her hand; she's painted, written on, or modified every element.

"Buildings are made of lots of stuff," Betsy says, like it's obvious. "Like brick! Or wood! Or comm-crete. Lots of stuff."

You nod. It makes sense.

"Are you gonna live with us now?" Betsy asks suddenly, looking up at you with those wide eyes.

> What do you say?

well generall it's just a term for someone with a lot of high level contracts, but there's also the goblin vow system which allows you to strike deals with the elements, archetypes, and things like time.

Could also have an entitlement ability that makes you magic-er, or a token. And I always like to include gutter magic as an option but that's not technically part of the changeling core

Curses I think refers to the effects of those who break a pledge- poisoning of the boon and what not. You could always cleverly word a pledge with an unsuspecting dupe to ensure that they break it

>>3106553
Hrm, I'm not sure that's correct, because the Hearth contract has something that's specifically called a curse.

What do I know though I'm just reading this all for the first time.

Yeah, and I"m just going by what I remember off hand. If I had to guess as far as mechanics go 'curse' just refers to any sort of negative but indirect magic

Contracts are one way to be a powerful sorcerer, yes, and generally Lost will assume that a person described as such has powerful Contracts, many Contracts, or both, but more broadly it refers to someone who specializes in the use of magical knowledge. Oneiromancers are a kind of sorcerer, as are persons such as Hedge Rangers & Archers of the Lonely March (one of Autumn's premier Entitlements, the Magi of the Gilded Thorn, are Hedge-specializing sorcerers who have more in common with survivalists than with wizards). Different Courts favor different sorcerous bents.

Very few. Like. One. And it doesn't have a dice roll. Witchtooth is one of the many thematic but literally non-functional Kiths in Lost, which needs fixing in order to use. Mannikin is similar.

As alluded to before, White Wolf has traditionally been very bad at actually building, you know, a fucking game.

yeah as a gm i'd just rule that curse refers to more broad thigns like pledge breaking
>>
>>3106656
Yeah I saw the actual ONE thing it should work for, and it's for hearth... The contract that doesn't require rolls....

who makes this shit man, you'd have to homebrew certain things as curses to even get them to work, like the madness effects from I think moon?

So, with regard to that Summer how-to, how often /do/ Freeholds manage to send an army into the Hedge, invade the home of a True Fae, kill them, and free all their kept Lost?
>>

not ever considering the way the world is

They don't. There's a lot of attendant issues to this, but the most pressing is logistics. You can probably find my answer on the subject in one of the CSQ PDFs; the end bits have the collected Q&A

Hmmmmmmm.

Any other supernaturals about? I know the Valks should be dealing with all sorts of stuff...

What about regular old "mere mortal" magic users. Anybody step up for the James randi award?

Task Force: VALKYRIE has grudgingly admitted that their remit extends to extra-normal entities which, to the best of their knowledge, "have no biological, political, or extra-normal relationship to Lost citizens and their attendant phenomena", but they've been tight-lipped about a lot of the details. Rogue journalists identifying themselves as "Network Zero" have, at the same time, exploded in popularity online, riding an incredible wave of validation for their previous work - documenting supernatural events. Some of Network Zero's old videos include soldiers with emblems suspiciously similar to VALKYRIE's.

Maaybe they tear apart a Charlatan if they are lucky enough to find one, or do their part in the Ashen Run. And what about Summer Hedge Rangers ? Are there any ?
>>
>>3108902
The Jaeger is the roughly equivalent role; Summer tends to field less people in that niche, in part because Autumn and Winter field so many, and in part because generally if they're moving into the Hedge it's with their Motleys or on the march. That's not to say that Summer would turn away a dedicated Hedge specialist, far from it; the Court's lack of such an internal role often means local incarnations are eager to have it. But they don't make a universal niche for it.

Aight, called, writing. I appreciate your patience; I had to call off work today because something is ripping its way through my guts. With my luck it's a fucking xenomorph.
