Hey /p/

Ive been taking photos for about 3 years now. I mainly do wildlife and animal portraiture but also some underwater photography.

I also dabble in other areas like street, travel, monochrome and landscapes.

Ive narrowed down most of my work to about 40 keepers. With the following being my best picks from different categories.

Im looking for some feedback on where to improve. Let me know what your thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Got it

I have tried to capture a similar image with the clowfish and Anemone (pic related) But I didnt feel it had as strong a presence.

Glad you liked that "abstract" image of Nalusuan Island, I had to kayak out at midday to get that right harmonious blend of blue of the water, mountains and sky.

Sadly the image was shot on jpg, so it limits on what I could do with it. It would have looked great on print.

I plan to return just to recreate the shot, If I can.
>>
>>3528610
The fish is cute, but I think it doesn't work as well. The anemone isn't in focus, and you see in from an human perspective, while macro makes the observer feel small.

I liked these the most, they are very nice and clean, simple pp, very nice colors in the underwater ones and the street pic
composition is conservative but good imo, albeit nothing too exciting
allround just well executed and nice scenes, I think they are quite good anon
I've rarely seen underwater pics on here but these were very cute and clear, the little fish peaking its head out of those... whatever those are, was super sweet

I think you can safely post some more itt

And glad you >>3529079 enjoy underwater photos also.

I havent experimented around in underwater macro as much. But I wanted to captue the clownfish in context to its home.

Composing an image underwater has its own set of challenges. Especially with jittery critters, white balancing and lighting.

Here is my best example of a "near miss" where the focus point was *just* off but would have made a good photo, in my opinion.

Youre absolutely right, anon.

Thanks for taking the time to edit. I really see the potential the image could have had.

I am actually spurred on to recreate this image with more capable equipment.

I know the conditions to end up with this image, but I didnt have the technical know-how back then or the equipment to have it realised.

It looks especially magnificent when there are lightning in the distance.

>Travel, Street.

I took this photo with the only full frame lens I could afford at the time, a 50mm 1.8 for about $60.

Much to my surprise this photo actually got the attention of 4 editors (Editors favourite) from National Geographic for a "yourshot" assignment.

It was a small victory. Very encouraging.

I know. But its better than no exposure I suppose. I am starting out after all.

I think its a good way of expanding my base as opposed to the occasional framed prints to local boomers and submitting to the odd competition.

Plus being 'published' is pretty decent goal to aim for. Great for social proof, can potentially translate to more sales.

>>3529252
Absolutely. I try and think of how a photograph will age when I compose an image.

I havent really delved into more artistic photography. Im not too sure where to begin, any recommendations? Books? Documentaries etc?

I have tried, but they end up a bit snap-shitty, so I never publish them online.

I do experiment a bit with street and black and white, especially on night walks .

But what seperates a good photo from a snapshit one? Is it just a subjective thing, do you think?

what is the point of this photo? what is the subject, why did you take it? the center of the frame is visually jarring and confusing compared to the edges. the guy on the left is the closet thing to a subject but his black jacket blends with the sky.

your photos lack purpose. they're snapshots because they have no clear intent. they do not provoke any emotion, a lot of "this is what I saw"

these photos are self serving and that can be fine but it won't do much for others and was made evident by the reactions in this thread. "tourist" seems to be a common theme and apt.

why photograph a zoo? that photo of the orangutan almost completely obstructed by foliage, did you think that was artsy? it's a waste of a frame with a subject behind visual noise. the photo of the kangaroo all the way on the left. was that a try at rot? the empty seascapes, don't post those. there isn't anything to critique. your shots of the beaches are just visually a mess. the water and buildings are the brightest things in the frame but also the most boring. the people are the most interesting thing but the light is terrible and in the thumbnail they look like rocks or trash on the beach. heck, they're even indistinct on the full-size. the boat is the visual anchor in this photo but I doubt that was your intent since it's such a boring object in comparison to the people on the beach.

you may have won some bullshit natgeo meme but that's because your photos are loud and garish. that's what grabs eyes but it lacks taste.

I enjoyed the scene of the table with the lamp on it but the composition could have been better. either shot with a wider pens or stepped back a bit. personally I think the contrast is too high to make a comfy photo but that's just me.

good luck Anon, hope you improve.

Ive been selling a few prints here and there, only one was online via gumtree.
I do have a photography "business" but its mainly for tax purposes to claim for equipment.

My main hobby profit stream is from flipping cameras & building/selling underwater rigs. But thats every other blue moon.

>Stay away from animals
They're almost always uninteresting and not to the standard of someone who specifically shoots animals. Your fish is OOF, your monkey is blown out and the others are bland and boring as hell. You're shooting zoos and aquariums so you're not even using a basic reflector or light setup and it's just weak and boring
>Improve your editing
Probably my strongest recommendation. Almost all of these would benefit a ton from some basic editing and fixes. This is hard to say because /p/ is more often a place where people fuck things up with over-editing but you're far on the other side.
>Stack more
Focus takes away from a couple of your shots and would be fixed with a tripod and as little as 2 exposures
>Isolate more
Other than your animal shots (and even those) feel snapshotty and like you've just taken a shot in passing because you were there, presumably because you have. Wandering around with a camera shooting is fine but if you're doing it with improvement in mind then don't shoot unless you know why you're there and what you're going to get.

Composition is one of your strong points, isolation isn't.

Most of the time you can ignore technical feedback like >>3528499 since it's often from stupids. Just imagine having a blue background or even structure with clouds. It'll distract and harm the shot.

you don't answer any of my questions and yet ask for more.
>spoon feed me plz
I spent enough time telling you why these photos are bad. I don't need to do your homework for you as well.

Thank you anon, I do edit but its usually very minimal.

Ive taken your advice and enrolled myself onto an online course with lightroom, as well as a workshop course around October to further my knowledge.

In the meanwhile, Ive watched some youtube tutorials on image stacking and took some pictures this afternoon to practise with.

>I dont need to do your homework for you

Absolutely not. I value your critique. Alot of other anons also pointed out similar/same short comings of my photos just as you have.

I expected to be critiqued harshly when I started this thread. Its actually turned out better that I expected.

But being on an anonymous Tibetan Yeti Sighting community notice board...and being /p/.
I have to excercise due diligence and actually probe depth of knowledge, rather than being another anon with spicy opinions.
Dont take it personally. Im just after more books to read, documentaries and photographers to look at.
