We had a nice long Fuji X thread so I figured there might be interest in more regular discussions. Post your Fuji photos and talk about cameras and Fuji photographers.

This deal is fucking incredible. Fuck me.

I paid full price for my X-H1 and grip at release, which was nearly $3k AUD.

I'm still more than happy with it, but that deal stings to see less than a year later.

I have 2 fuji xh1 cameras

I like them but holy shit no one told me mirrorless cameras got dirt/dust in them so easily.
I've taken mine to get cleaned like 4/5 times now.

Anyway my only complaint about the cameras is that when taking huge amounts of photos, occasionally the camera will freeze up, say "read/write error" and not take photos and even wipe the photos you just took...

Im using sandisk cards. Can anyone explain...?

Just learn the clean the sensor yourself. All you need is sensor cleaning fluid and some sensor swabs. It's really not hard, like it takes two minutes, and the sensor is so protected under layers of glass it's hard to fuck it up. Just make sure to look through a loupe or magnifying glass to see if all the dust is definitely gone.

I always wreck everything I try to fix. Knowing myself, my camera won't be any different. I'm just gonna try my best to not get more dust in it.

Also for anyone interested the weather sealing in the fuji is shit. I've sent mine to get fixed for water damage before. I had my canon 5d3 out in the same rain and it was fine. My xh1 though... Filled with water...
>>
>>3524466
The sensor isn't exposed so even if you jab at it trying to break it down you'd have no luck. You're just cleaning the glass layer on top, not cleaning the sensor itself. It's obviously scary the first time you do it but it's really not hard at all. Swab left, swab right, done. Or you can keep throwing away your money for one minute of work, it's your life I guess. Its a good skill to learn for owning a mirrorless camera and sensor cleaning kits cost fuck all.
>>
>>3524470
Yeah I guess so. I'll look into it

there's a program that converts your LR presets to C1. It's worth it for the files you get imo.

>iridient x-transformer

The current Camera RAW module in Photoshop made it obsolete. You can now demosaic Fuji RAWs in ACR using Adobe's 'enhance details' AI/Algorhithm and it turns out even better than when using Iridient X-Transformer at its best settings. There's no reason to not use ACR anymore.

How's the 16mm f/2.8 for landscapes?

I bought the 16mm f/1.4 to do landscapes (and dabble in astro), but I honestly don't find myself using it at f/1.4. So a reduction in kit size and weight is welcomed, however the prices for the f/2.8 still need to come down a bit.

I don't want to sacrifice image quality, something the f/1.4 is crazy good for, but since I'm mainly using it at f/4-f/11...

What kind of hardware are you guys running to get those kinds of quick results? I'm a poorfag and with the outdated hardware I managed to scrap together off ebay and craigslist, (i7 @3.7ghz, 16 gb ddr3 1600, gtx 970 4gb, and a 5200 rpm hdd), it can take as much as two minutes to process a single image with enhanced details. With an agressive oc to 4.7ghz I can get that down to about a minute 20. Obviously I'm not using this feature much unless I really like the image. My gpu apparently isn't being utilized according to task manager, even though I have the "use graphics processor" option checked in lightroom preferences.

I have the XC16-50mm. It's the lens I use for wide shooting in nature. Never use the zoom so I thought about selling it and getting the XF16mm 2.8.

Is there any quality difference in the image quality? Sure it's a smaller lens but I don't know if it's worth it to sell the XC and pay around 300€ more for this lens.

It's a great camera, even more so for its current price, but before buying one be sure to take a close look at (pictures of) the rubbery leatherette covering, especially the bottom left corner on the back and at the top and bottom of the grip on the front. After heavy use the material tends to expand and get loose, and it's hard to reattach (and finding a replacement skin is almost impossible).

Why do you poorfags always clown around saying stuff like this?
Do you think we don't all know you sold the x100f because it's still valuable enough to pay that late rent check you had, whereas your original x100 is too low value now to make a usable profit from?

Stop deluding yourself about why you kept what you kept. It's cringe.

>the affordable fast kit zoom I got isn't as sharp as a prime wide open and I'm surprised by this
Like where did you even get the impression that the 18-55 would be impeccably sharp, let alone at every focal length? At least bother to read a review or two before throwing money at a lens and getting a conniption when it doesn't deliver on impossible expectations.

18-55 consensus you can find anywhere:
>pretty good IQ (for a kit zoom)
>pretty fast (for a kit zoom)
>pretty well built (for a kit zoom)
There's nothing stellar about it, but it's decently compact and overall a great lens, especially for travel.
If you want to actually start replacing primes on a sharpness level you're looking at Fuji's pro-tier zooms and a whole other price range.

Any cheap adapter you find on ebay will work just fine. The K&F concept ones seem a bit sturdier, but I doubt the cheaper ones are any worse. They're both metal, I guess you pay a bit more for the design.

How many of you don't use the shutter speed dial? I leave my XT2 on T all the time, it's much easier to change that way.

I think the dials on the Fuji are a bit of a meme. All of the physical functions can be controlled with the front and rear dials by the right thumb, and it's far more efficient to do that, too.
>>
>>3526000
The Zhongyi Lens Turbo II adds a little bit of distortion but is otherwise pretty nice IQ-wise. I rarely use adapted SLR lenses without it.
The glass is very "soft" though and completely unprotected at the back so be careful with it (always use a rear cap etc).

Yes I actually prefer it to later model x100's. I actually enjoy the slow AF since It *really* slowed down my flow in a beneficial way.

I find myself prefocussing, waiting for things to happen, anticipating and really planning for shots....just super therapeutic to just watch the flow of people move through while waiting for a composition to come together.

It looks good if you add your personal touches to it like a favourite camera strap or leather body... and it isnt offensive like a DSLR.

I can approach people and say "hey I like the color of your hat! Can I take your picture?" 90% of the time greeted with a smile and have a great photo and maybe an email to send a copy... or in a seldom occassion, a phone number.

T. Have a 5DSR + 1DX. I dont use as often nowadays.

Anyone have any idea why capture one, on import, is removing the grain effect that I added in camera? Capture ones own grain effect is not the same that the camera generate, so. I'd really not want it to do that. If it's any help, it started doing that after I registered for full access. The express version worked just fine with imports.

use the smallest square for zone to avoid contrast. Use medium for single. Single is slower than zone but more precise. Also I use back button focusing.

I'm new to editing Fuji raws. What kinds of issues do you have?
>>
>>3528765
Hmm hard to explain. I'm used to editing Canon raws (had a 600d for a long time) - obviously the DR and image quality on the fuji is by far good, and when I mean by far I mean night and day difference. But when editing in Lightroom, I just can't get the results I want - probably has to do with the x-trans sensor, since it's different from the bayers - and sharpening is horrible (even though they introduced the AI enhance details, I don't want to waste my time clicking that setting on every photo, and I don't want to switch to C1 because I have all my presets, brushes in LR.). Honestly it's probably just Adobe not being very good at handling Fuji files - or maybe it's just me - I even have to zoom in to the picture for it to actually load (otherwise it looks horrible, like it's all soft). But yeah I guess it's just a preferential thing - but to me it feels like editing Canon files was so very easy, and much easier on my Lightroom.
>>
>>3528776
by far better* my bad
>>
>>3528776
Lightroom is horrible to edit .raf files.

Try selecting the .raf in Lightroom > right click > enhance details. It will create a .DNG pic of the .raf, then you can have a better editing workflow with Fuji's raws on Lightroom

if you're only using Fuji, I'm also suggesting you buying Capture One Fujifilm, it's far better than Lightroom at all.
>>
>>3528776
Upgrade your PC. Enhance Details doesn't take that long if you're not using some shitty computer or laptop. For me it takes around 5-8 seconds per photo. I'm just more picky with my keepers now and enhance them.
>>
>>3528778
yeah I know, wrote that in my post - I just dont feel like converting every photo individually, and waiting for it to convert. Takes like 10-15sec for me actually
>>
>>3528781
yeah, that's a bummer..

I'm cherrypicking my Raf files, as I am still using a Nikon as well I see no reason to move to Capture One yet..
>>
>>3528776
You tried Capture one fuji express? Its free and better for .raf than Fuji. I also use Iridient X if I want to use .raf in Lightroom.
>>
*than lightroom
>>
>>3524992
You there at the Bodensee?
>>
>>3528780
I don't have a bad pc, gtx 960 and i5 4460 - it's not the best but not bad honestly

>>3528800
and I did - it's not bad, I would obviously need to learn how to use C1 but that's not why I don't want to move from lr to C1 - it's because I have all my presets (brushes, edits, essentially everything saved in LR - and as of now there is no way to completely transfer everything to C1)
>>
Just bought a X-H1 + 35mm f1.4 coming today. What should I expect?
>>
>>3528878
A great combo for sure. You're gonna love it.
>>
>>3528878
VERY nice combo which I also own..the 35mm f1.4 has a classic look and the X-H1 is IMO one of the current best of the Fuji X line. Its a tank.
>>
>>3528808
Iridient X or similar might be the way to go...I know its another step but its worth it.

Thinking about trading in my d7100 for an xt1. The EVF, build quality, colors and real dials have me swooning. How's the weather sealing and lens lineup?
>>
>>3529121
The weather sealing is good, but newer bodies are more sealed.

Fuji's glass lineup is superb. Almost every lens is comparable to Canon's L lenses. That being said, third party support isn't great, but there's a chance that Sigma will start producing X mount lenses if Fuji's sales increase a bit.
>>
Nay jpg shooters here? What settings do you use?
>>
>>3529091
>>3528757

you mean color-wise? I shoot jpeg (the Fujicolor Pro 400H Film Simulation Recipe) + raw - and most of the time (80%) i just edit the raw the way I like it, but I tried using vsco presets and they can be pretty useful from time to time.
>>
Any recommendations for an acros preset? My Fuji doesn't have it.

X100 is old as fuck at this point and has some serious limitations to consider. I still think I'd go for an X100 over the 23mm f2. The 35mm focal length is my favourite by far, I keep my Ricoh GR in 35mm crop mode at all times because I love it so much.

i'd say it's a bit of both, probably wouldnt've been able to edit the shot this way without the dynamic range of the x-t3. Even without editing the pictures, they look good - but editing the raws makes the pictures CRAZY good (sharpening sucks in lr though as stated before)

also example before - after

I feel like that for the resolution photos tend to viewed at nowadays there's no reason not to sharpen the fuck out of anything that doesn't have really fine repeating patterns unless you're going for a soft look.

i got C1 fujifilm when it was on sale for 50% off.
its definitely great. deals with raf way faster. my only issue is certain things like exposure merge or even panorama stitching.
for panos I've used image compositor editor and its working ok but was hoping to not have to open photoshop for exposure merging.

Sudden last minute trip to NZ south island (first world problems).

Have the following lenses:
XF 16mm f/1.4, XF 27mm f/2.8, XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4, XF 56mm f/1.2

Which should I take for a lightweight hiking kit? Thinking the 16mm for (((landscapes))) and the 18-55mm zoom... but honestly not sure how much I'd use it. And I know there'll be occasions I miss the 56mm f/1.2

Is it worth cranking the dynamic range setting up for shooting raws if I already heavily utilize exposure compensation? I know it underexposes but I get shy about how it boosts the iso so much.

I can't imagine ever selling my primes. Thinking of getting some vintage ones.
I mainly use the 18-55 zoom when I'm not intereseted in bokeh, the primes cover that. I can't imagine the 2.8 having much use in that department and with the OIS on the kit the speed also seems redundant.

I had an adapted 28mm
The 35mm and 60mm be that I sold
for convention stuff I always found myself switching way too often and the weight of the new one isnt that noticable since I changed straps. Also gives me about 500grams less to carry when I go hiking.
I still have an adapted 85mm f1.4 for bokeh and background separation. I hadn't considered the image stabilization for the 18-55 but I don't usually shoot slow exposures unless I have a tripod. Pic sorta related. 2exposures merged.

This isn't a bad idea, alternately get the 16-50 XC and an inexpensive second lens with the money you save. Plenty of options to suit your shooting tastes. 50-230 XC, 27 2.8 pancake, or a decent Chinese lens...I have the Kamlan 28 1.4 which I quite like, or perhaps the 7artisans 35 1.2.

The XC zooms are pretty plasticky but they weigh next to nothing and are optically better than they have any business being for the price. They're also good stopgaps until you want to really drop some money in with the 2.8 zooms or the incoming 16-80.

im actually thinking of doing the same, sold my d7100 with sigma 17-50 f 2.8, nikkor 35mm 1.8 G, a prettey decent chinese flash two shitty SD crads and some gels and light modifiers for the flash for 850 eur, thinking of getting the x-t30.

the issue im facing now is that i actually really liked the d7100 and loved the sigma lens, really great IQ for the price, i know that ill get better low light performance and focusing with the fuji, but im also loosing the weather sealing and battery life. i really need somone to sell me on the entire fujifilm system some more.

I'm thinking of buying into Fuji as my first 'real' camera system. My only concern is that they are cropped cameras and I mainly shoot portraits. Is the crop a big deal in terms of increasing depth of field and reducing bokeh or is it not that big of a problem as people make it be?
>>
>>3533858
I think you drank a little too much FF coolaid. APSC is awesome for portraits. Grab a decent 50mm and go to town.
>>
>>3533858
Yeah, most full frame shills are just regurgitating BS to help themselves justify their purchase. At this point, the actual difference in image quality between APS-C and full frame sensors is fairly minimal, especially when considering Fujifilm's sensors. The only real downside is bokeh and a some fine detail quality, however you won't be able to see much of a difference unless you crop in a TON.

Anyway, I'm not saying that there aren't benefits to full frame, there definitely are some, but they aren't as big of a deal as some people would have you think.
>>
hey fuji, I've been learning on film for a while now and I'm getting to a certain point where I'm considering making the jump to digital just for the sake of ripping the bandaid and keeping recurring costs down by killing out the film+development

The Fuji XT100 has fallen on my radar as of late, and I see some places selling the body for as low as €350, or a bundle with the XC 15-45mm for €499 (which I'd consider the top of my budget at the moment). Is it worth the investment? I'd like for this one to be with me for the forseeable future

I by no means want to do photography professionally, but I very much like making my own zine projects as a hobby, and have quite a bit of learning to do. I'd also prefer smaller cameras and want a single versatile lens
