So if I buy a ring light that comes with filter thread adapters but I do reveresed do I need a re-reverser? Or should I just glue it on or something? Or, should I not buy a ringlight at all...?

would it be difficult to take smth similar at the edge of an iris or would you have to blind your subject?

Get a aperture adapter used with reverse rings. There's usually a kit you can buy that will h ave the reverse ring and the aperture adapters. That is for lenses that don't have a manual aperture ring, like Nikon's G lenses. That aperture adapter will act like a rear lens cap to attach to the back of the lens and on its front it will have filter threads to attach whatever you need. If you don't need the aperture adapter for the aperture control, it can still be used, though there are also, "reverse protection," rings that do the same thing minus the aperture ring. Personally, I think having the aperture adapter one is better jut in case you ever want to use a lens that doesn't have an aperture control.

Here's an example,
https://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Reverse-Aperture-Control-Protector/dp/B005ODKHG0

>Or should I just glue it on or something?

One of my C-mount lenses has a UV filter ring with the glass removed JB Welded on it so I can use a ring light. If you ever try that, just use hot glue/blue tack first to make sure it will work like you want before using something permanent.

Front element will be less curved because of shorter flange distance. In theory a bit better corner sharpness, I guess. But really in macro you're dong some heavy rapeage to the light as you assemble shit to get closer, so it probably doesn't matter.

Thanks for the info. Had a read about how mirrorlesses would be better/worse for macro. turns out olympus has a focus bracketing feature. Better models even have focus stacking. Seems pretty nice. But only works with a number of olympus made lenses. however it works fine with any number of extension tubes. I'll most likely buy an e-m10 mk2 and report back once I do macros with it.
>>

I have no idea what I'm doing.
Is there any way to get better shots with a cheap camera or do I just need a better camera?
>>
>>3494657
Better shots? Like closer or just better composition, because better composition is what you should be focusing on first. Basically, git gud. But, if you really want 1:1 or more extreme macro then you'll need dedicated equipment or whatever you are going for...
>>
>>3494779
In this case I mean more clear on the bug.
Parts of it are sort of in focus but nearby parts like the legs aren't.
How do I get the whole bug in focus I guess is what I'm asking?
>>
>>3494804
You can't with 1 photo. The DoF is too narrow in macro. The closer/more magnified you get the smaller the DoF gets. Google up "focus stacking" and learn how to do it. Photoshop is pretty lenient with hand-shot focus stacking (Auto-blend function), just take lots of pics.
>>
>>3494810
So there's no way to do it in one photo?
>>
>>3494812
Angling. If you take pictures looking flat on the side or top of a bug, you can have a lot more of it in focus.
Also, smaller aperture, crank the iso or use flash to compensate.

What cam/lens are you using? If you've interchangable lens camera you can just buy extension tube, and it'll allow you to focus closer. They're fairly cheap for most systems and do a good job on most lenses. If you've fixed lens you can try some macro extensions that can clip on to the end of your lens. Most have some universal solutions, but double check if they can go to your lenses.
>>3494810
Should be possible to go without focus stacking. You only need that for some higher magnifications. Forelens and extension tubes are good enough for fooling around.

You can get closer with reverse rings than 1:1. Also with bellow.
>>
>>3499141
Those are dirt cheap. It will start to fail around 2 years. The slider where knob tightens down on the rail will be the first thing to go. Piece of its internals will slip out between the slider and the rail. If you don't put them back in "because they fell out in grass and were lost" then the slider will eventually start making a grove where the knob tightens directly onto the rail then. It isn't a huge issue, but it will make quick adjustments clunkier, that is all. Only get bellows that have metal mounting rings. Same goes for extension tubes. The cheap ones have a type of plastic, for the mounting ring that likes to snap off rather easily. That issue will only happen if you are really using it a lot. Like nearly every day or 3 times a week. Otherwise, it may last you many more years if you don't move it much.

Also, both bellows and extension tubes sometimes use a tiny screw to stop a lens when you twist it onto the mount. Often times, that screw will fall out. If that happens, they the lens can turn and turn instead of stopping. A drop of loctite for screws fixes that issue.

I've had no other issues with those. With my dirt cheap 4-way rail the assembly inside the slider fell apart and made it useless. I had to JB Weld things back into correct order for it to work right.

>>3499150
>>3499167
It depends on the lens. You can calculate it here with one of these calculators: http://extreme-macro.co.uk/calculators/

>>3499146
>>3499148
You can get bellows with contacts, they are just expensive. They are easy enough to diy, if the aperture is also electronic on the lens.
>>
>>3499150
You don't need 1:1. You need optimum corner sharpness for film scanning. It matters not on what aperture. May need to spend money on very good lens and may get better quality by just buying film scanner. Also faster.

There is literally one available and only for EF mount. The other solutions use manual bellows with lens reverse + electronic contacts.

you might need higher magnification tbqh

So with an olympus m4/3 and a 30mm olympus "macro" lens (translates to 60mm)
how many extension tubes would I need for 2x or higher magnification? They only make 10mm and 16mm tubes.
Also since the aperture translates to f/7 should I be worried about the loose of light, or since the cuck-factor will my working distance be retardedly short?

Update: just tweeked the diffuser setup.
Cut and taped two toilet paper rolls to reduce flash loss over the top of the diffuser. Some quick testing at home looks like I gained about half a stop of extra light on the subject.
Going to test it tomorrow because I took off work. Hopefully not too many people will be out because my setup officially makes me that weird guy with the camera.

You won't need anything higher. 10+16=26mm, lens being 30mm and already above 1:1 will probably allow you to focus on dust on the fore element itself with 10mm already. And I don't think you'll get much higher magnification either. Even theoretically you can only get 30mm extension to work on 30mm lens.

Extension tube allows you to focus closer than the minimum focusing distance to the object. That way they are more effective on larger focal ranges and on lenses that aren't macro already. 30mm's closest focusing range is already really close to the object with 1.5cm (according to this review: https://robinwong.blogspot.com/2016/09/olympus-mzuiko-30mm-f35-macro-lens.html). You will get even closer to the subject, but it won't have much of an effect. What it will allow is for you to get more back and get same magnifications! This is not insignificant, but I think that for this lens alone, fore lenses would be better option. They increase magnification, while retaining same distance to the object, and same aperture. Look up what thread it's got and search for close up sets.

it can be, they're generally pretty nice optically and some of them have stabilization which is helpful for doing anything handheld

Macro starts at 1:1. 1:1.x is "close up", regardless of what your the company who made your 1:4 lens with the "macro" button function tells you.
>>
>>3502125
You've your definitions wrong. Popper macro lens is 1:1. But macro photography can be anything. Even going up to 1:6/1:8. I'd be willing to bet half of the images posted here have smaller magnification than 1:1. There is no way knowing after all. Lens sharpness play a huge role in it, I can post you a 1:1 shot that looks as if it's taken much higher, and a crop that looks higher than 1:1.

Macro begins when you go larger than life size, which is past 1:1. Like 2:1. To find out what your lens and settings are doing, just take a photo of a ruler with millimeters. If the number of millimeters seen on the ruler are higher than your sensor/film is wide then it is macro. doing a measurement shot is something you should be doing every time you change your lens setup. That way you know how much will fit into the frame and you can size your magnification to better suit the subject and composition.

First time I've ever done any significant manipulation of an image.
The actual flower was yellow, but tried experimenting with stuff and I think it looks rad like this.

Slowly getting better at using rawtherapy, going back and re-editing some of my favorite shots. They're coming out much better than the first time around.

I remmember them both, not going to check, but I don't think it's better.
You're pulling shadows too much up in the first one and it's giving you noise in the background. Either selectively denoise or keep it black. The other one is too bright. Also too much denoising or bad jpeg compression/resize.

I have a 300/2.8 with a drop-in filter slot, I wanted to try to see how it would work with a close-up diopter filter.

I gained like 2meters to the 4m closest focus range. Pic related is wide open vs f8.

Going to test it further outside sometime.

Specs?
They look really nice, well done IMO; I guess they're cropped?

Long telephoto and tubes are very popular with buterfliers, and dragonfliers. They give you reach needed to take shots without disturbing the bugs.
>>
>>3504368
Wineberry just at the side, bugs are about 1:2 crop, unknown magnification. Olympus 60mm, berry is 75-300 with tubes.

Sure, but this lens and camera is like 3kilos together. I can't handhold it for proper macro.
Besides, quite difficult to find non-screw extension tubes for sony.
