question: are promist filters worth it? I've heard things here and there about just making a DIY nylon filter but I would like to hear opinions
>>3484145The "red-pill" towards filmmaking is realising that the most effective way to move 'up' (commercially) is entirely dependent on looks. If you look more professional, if your gear looks more expensive etc etc then you'll do better (assuming you actually produce decent video). If you get hired to shoot a corporate training video and you show up with a crappy canon 1300d, a small tripod and nylon tights that you put over your lens then chances are you won't get rehired regardless (unless you just make the best impression in the world on your employer somehow). If you show up with that same camera but a case of expensive lenses, a huge video fluid head tripod, big studio lights that you don't need, a cage and expensive filters, and talk about how you would use the arri but it's in the shop and this is a small production so you're confident with a smaller camera then you're a lot more likely to be rehired. Even if the video is exactly the same in both casesIf you're an indie filmmaker making shit for yourself, or to get better or to create a showreel then no. A lot of this shit isn't worth it.
>>3483978/vid/ should stop recommending the bmpcc4k as a "budget" camera. All the BM camera end up costing way more $$$$ in addition to the body. You can blow $300 easy on media alone.
>>3484196It's clear you have no idea what "budget" means.>You can blow $300 easy on media alone. This is a stupid statement. You can blow $1000 on media for any camera. That doesn't mean anything. A 128gb sd card with a write speed of 90 mb/s costs like 40 bucks.
>>3484196> blow over $300 on media aloneNot if you record directly to an external ssd drive, if you want a cfast 2.0 card it’s going to cost you serious coin no matter what camera you use.
>>3484201yeah, but this is the board where people think $60 for a filter is expensive>This is a stupid statement. You can blow $1000 on media for any camera. That doesn't mean anything. A 128gb sd card with a write speed of 90 mb/s costs like 40 bucks.I'm talking about how much it costs to get 4:2:2 4k 60fps without frame drops
>>3484237You can shoot that perfectly fine with UHS-II cards. Also why the FUCK would you ever shoot at the maximum limit of a camera? VERY little situations. If "media" being "too expensive" the reason of your mediocrity then please sell all your gear, or give it away!
>>3484243You're missing my point, which is that the camera is a bad budget camera recommendation and that there are a lot of hidden costs.

What's the best way to get more distance out of a DVR for CCTV that only has an HDMI port as the viewing port.Is buying two HDMI -> SDI & back converters and placing them on each end of our existing 75ohm coax connection a good idea? Or would pulling an Ethernet line and converting HDMI through that be a tad more painless
So what would be some good lights to get if i'm looking to make home made porn? I already have a F&V R300 ring light. I dont really have space to setup more than one light stand, and even then i'd like to avoid that so i'd need something which I can nigger rig, like using Fat Gecko mounts to windows or walls.
I have been shooting with the gh5 close to 3 years and i still love it. There is no justification going for anything else in 2019 yet. Change my mind. Pro tip: you can't.
>>3484720agreed, it's still one of the most versatile little cameras out there
>>3484720GH5 has a lot of noise in its shadows and poor low-light capabilities. It also has a small sensor. In my opinion, its benefits are outweighed by its cons (depending on what you want to shoot). But to each their own and I'm glad you have a camera that you love that much
>>3484720loving your gear is the most amateurish mistake you can do. what a pleb you are.
Videos wouldn't have any kind of exif would they?
>>3484720It's quietly turning into a classic. Way ahead of it's time three years ago, yet it went under the radar for a long time. People are only now starting to realize what 10bit can do for you.

>>3484969The bmp4k outperforms the gh5 in literally every aspect by a country fucking mile (except ibis) and is cheaper. That you think a worse, more expensive camera releasing today would be a game changer is fucking stupid.
>>3484970Maybe in commercial videos yeah, but the ergos suck my man that makes it impossible for run n gun shoots. But is a good little camera but yet again again is not really cheap to make it work for a full day shoot.

>>3484834depends on the format and codeca lot of acquisition formats have all kinds of similar metadata attached
>>3485015But it records to an ssd drive. Records in ProRes with out an external recorder, and records in raw too.Unless you need great autofocus for run and gun work I don’t see how the gh5 out performs it, and I bet blackmagic could add autofocus in a future update if they wanted to.Plus they include a great nle, DaVinci Resolve, that doesn’t require you to pay a monthly tax to Abode. If you want great color get the bmpcc 4k, if you want to record your crotchfruits acting like morons or your foreveralone self making autistic rantings or non-cinematic cat videos online get the gh5. If you want cinematic cat videos you’ll need the bmpcc 4k.
>>3485015You've just described a Red camera. Do Reds suck? I don't think so.
>>3485038The gh5 doesn't even have a great autofocus maybe only with native lenses and still is not realiable. But getting an ssd to shoot proress it will cost you shiton of money because of storage. Bmcc is weak. Gh5 is clearly better. And the gh5s has better sensor thatn bmcc. Also dacinci is still underdeveloped and premiere has been rock solid for years.
>>3485048Comparing a full cine cam to consumer/prosumer entry level cams, but still gh5 can still outperform the red if you shoot cats. hehe
>>3484970I don't think they're even in the same market segment. Gh5 is feature packed all rounder, bmpc4k is control environment high performer. With same lens ecosystem they even complement each other well.
>>3485053Not if you are a sperg doing a documentary about cats to show on the big screen on Caturday. You’d need a red or an arri if you wanna do that.
>>3485051Enjoy paying adobe $20+ dollars a month to edit your videos when the anons using DaVinci don’t need to pay adobe any fees.If you want 4k hi-quality footage you’re going to need to pay for media. If you want shitty videos for YouTube this may not apply to you.

What's a good, cheap, reliable VHS camcorder that is still kicking? My friends and I are making some movies and our old Panasonic one is decent but it eats up tape frequently.
No more excuses, /vid/
>>3485420Gearfags keep getting BTFO but I guarantee they'll keep making excuses to hold off from practicing making videos regardless of what how much new gear they get
>>3485506Gh5s shoots 4k 25p 10 bit at 400mbs what it your point? It was still a medium high end production
>>3485513Re-read my post slowly but if you don't understand, my point is the GH5S IS a VERY CAPABLE camera and despite that, there will be gearfags who scoff at it becsuse they THINK they need something on the much higher end in order to make good videos. Such gearfags then go on to make excuses about not being able to get into video because they lack hollywood tier cameras.
>>3485353Overlay the second shot above the first shot on your timeline. Key the second shot out with a luma key. Use keyframes and have the second shot fully visible about 2 or 3 seconds later.Or just pay for a plugin to do it for you
>>3485420The cinema camera meme is so stupid and dead at this point. If you have a 'decent' camera that can shoot 4k, its quality is enough for cinema. Audiences can't see whether it was 8-bit or 10-bit. Just make sure you expose your footage properly and light it properly
I want a shot of a vampire hanging from the ceiling, I am thinking of having an actor sit upside down in the corner of a room and then just flip the footage. They will wear no baggy clothes and short hair, in theory this should work right? This would also be a night scene with a single key light so most of the frame will be black. Maybe give him an object to throw to sell the idea of gravity? I am surprisingly finding it hard to find any tutorials on how to practically fake people hanging from ceilings.
>>3485521It’s much easier to blame your lack of gear than to admit that you’re a talentless retarded sperg who will never be able to shoot good video no matter what gear you end up getting.
>>3485525and with the bmpcc 4k you can get a camera that can shoot 12bit raw for less money than a camera than shoots 8bit or 10bityou only need the extra bits if you want to do aggressive color grading or vfx workanons is their any other reasons you’d need more bits in your image
>>3485563the main reason is being able to use any form of log to make use of your dynamic range
>>3485546I would like to see the result :)
>>3485563Any indie production that spends more money on their cameras/camera-rentals than the price of a bmp4k is flat-out retarded. It's actually becoming embarrassing.
>>3485651Been thinking for a while that what we think as indie production has change wildly. If you are shooting on red cameras or other high end glass and lights, you are closer to a small production house than an "indie filmmaker" which in my mind conjures all the directors from the 90s that shot on 16mm during their weekends using daylight.
>>3485669I don't know, I helped out on a short film a couple of years ago that had a budget of just a little under ten grand. They shot it on an arri.No one owns arris but everyone rents them
>>3484253Color grading is a bitch. If you don't have any kind of log or raw, then make sure you're satisfied with whatever you're getting out of the camera.
>>3485546I don't know man, hardwood floors or carpet ceilings isn't common.
>>3485928am planning to use the corner of a basement, haven't done any location scouting so will see what I find.
Which variable ND filter would you guys recommend?
>>3484253Contrary to what others have said, I'd say yes even with 8-bit picture profiles. Changing white balance alone doesn't really affect the picture much, it just shifts all the colour values. If you already have a clean image that's properly exposed, this process won't break your image. In pp, it's literally as simple as putting on fast colour corrector, and one of the options lets you select a point from your image to set a new white balance.I'm not just theorising, I've done this and been praised on the final image by strangers (I was shooting on a relatively high bitrate, but 8-bit 4-2-0 standard picture profile). I'd post examples if I wasn't so paranoid since the short is available online. In my experience, the colour grading that really breaks an image is when you add a lot of contrast (creates banding), when you really mess with the individual colours on your rgb curves and when you try to adjust your exposure in post (though if you lower your exposure in post it has the opposite effect and makes the footage look better)
I have two Nvidia 1080 graphics cards and 128 gb of ram in my system. DaVinci Resolve gives an error that it ran out of video ram. How can I configure the program to use some of the 128 gb of ecc ram in my system as video ram. Or how can I configure the program to make better use of my gpus. This happens very often for very small, less then a few minutes long, clips not for large videos.
>>3486032>use some of the 128 gb of ecc ram in my system as video ramnot possiblemake sure to use the studio version so you can use more than one gpumake sure to use the latest stable 15.x version along with whatever driver build they suggest in the official setup guide and BMD forumI haven't used a nvidia gpu in a while but I remember this random running out of error thing vanishing and appearing back and forth with different updates to both resolve and the nvidia drivers so check the official channels for info on how to track that shit with your system
>>3486034I am using version 16.3 I am using the studio version. Is their a way to make it so that both my gpu and cpu get used so that the gpu doesn’t fail or is that also impossible too.I am running it on Windows 10.

>>3486032>two Nvidia 1080 graphics cards>how can I configure the program to make better use of my gpusDavinci already supports SLI, but mem will be shared, not combined across the cards. SLI limitations, nothing you can do abut it. Only way to combine memory would be using NVLink Bridge. Not sure if Davinci already supports it, doesn't matter, since your gpu's doesn't support it. You can test if you're getting any performance out of SLI by plugging one of the gpu's out of the motherboard.

Does it bother anyone else when YouTube vloggers call themselves filmmakers
>>3486186why would it bother you?it's not that "filmmaker" would imply any quality anywayI find some people that post regular gear selfies, basic looking corporate interview bts shots and random shiity stills on instagram and call them "cinematographer" in their bio much more retarded
>>3486188It just feels to me that it takes away from what a massive effort and pain in the arse it is to actually be a filmmaker stolen valour, if you will
>>3486190If the only accomplishment you get from your films is being able to call yourself a filmmaker, then you have far greater problems than some dipshit youtuber's way of describing what they do
>>3486190An amateur photographer that takes shitty photographs is still a photographer, same for a shitty painter. Its just a tittle, its meaningless. Like Robert Rodriguez said in his book, people spend thousands of dollars in film school just so they can earn the right to call themselves filmmakers. He made a business card out of paper and it garner the same respect. And I am saying vloggers are inherently shitty filmmakers either.
>>3486198Robert Rodriguez got respect because he created great films. El Mariachi was a fucking masterpiece. All film schools do is teach you how to produce pretentious shit nobody wants to watch.
I have a canon 1 mk4 and a good set of glass (70-200L, 24-105 etc, 50 etc), I assume this is perfectly fine for starting out in video? I've been asked to document a social project that mostly takes place in a dull lit music studio.

What is the proper workflow for working with blackmagic raw? Do I need to do a color-space transformation to turn the raw into flat log or can I grade directly from raw? I find I got better looking images from cinema dng when grading but I like the small file sizes that blackmagic raw offers?Would it be better to use ProRes? Or is their a real benefit to using blackmagic raw? I just want to know the proper workflow for getting great looking cinematic images out of blackmagic raw on my bmpcc 4k.I am just a noob who wants to learn moar about color grading so I can create some kino cat videos.
>>3486583>Do I need to do a color-space transformation to turn the raw into flat log there's a drop down menu in the raw tab, you can use film, video, extended video or any starting point you like, pretty much identical to cdng>or can I grade directly from raw?use "film" and it's the usual flat profile if you want to use luts and shit that expects that>I find I got better looking images from cinema dng when grading but I like the small file sizes that blackmagic raw offers?in terms of profiles it's the exact same>Would it be better to use ProRes? no>Or is their a real benefit to using blackmagic raw?it's small, efficient, very high performance and has all the raw controls

>>3486628it's the only way to make it in the business
>>3486628If you video tape yourself fucking the escorts to sell as amateur porn you have used the money in the right way.
>>3486650>to sell as amateur porn>not to release as a deep introspective critique on the shallow nature of modern day relationships and sex that only idiots can't understandIt's like you don't even want to be renowned in the indie film scene by people who watch films purely to feel cultured
>>3486628That's pretty based, then again literally all your money on whores seems irresponsible

For documentary-esque filming, what fps would you guys suggest? 24 or more towards 30+?
>>3487023depends on what you're documenting and what kind of look you want
>>3487028Well in my opinion 60fps looks to fluid, a bit of a ''slower'' look. Would 30fps achieve this?Starting with my documentary minor in september and have some research to do. Any help would be appreciated.
>>3487038test it with the kind of situations, focal lenths and camera movement you want to usethis depends so much on context
>>348703860fps is usually used for sports.24fps is usually used for the cinema, it’s what most movies use.30fps is usually used for televisionWatch the image and choose whatever fps looks more pleasing to your eye.
>>3486909I shoot sporting events all the time and it is really taste dependent. For example if you are shooting something like Tough Mudder you might want that slo-mo smooth look for shots of people crawling out of the mud. For things with lots of motion in groups like football or soccer you might want high fps with choppy shutter. 24/180 is the most cinematic.
>>3486628Buy artbooks made by photographers for more inspiration
>>3484248There are no costs associated with the BMPCC4K that don't come with every single camera on the market.>inb4 no flip out screen90% of the time, I shoot without an additional monitor. As of now I have to borrow a camera from my university. I want a cheap DSLR (i am poor) mostly for video. I really wanted the 5D mk III, but that thing is expensive. I am currently using Nikon D5100 with NIKKOR 18-105 3.5-5.6 ED. I know basically nothing when it comes to digital cameras and what is and isn't good. >>3487936I use to pull apart everything I see here, but this is something I can tolerate. ofc the lighting on the actor has to be better and start to adjust exposure on the face, not the whole frame. but apart from that it didn't bore me and that is everything filmmaking is about and something you hardly find here. keep going.

Hello dear friends. I've a question of a very practical nature. In a student caliber shoot, how viable is it to have 25 scenes shot in a single day , all with natural light? We must do some makeup tricks and special effects, albeit not too complicated. Thank you in advance.
Lumix 12-35 2.8 for the BMPC4K?People generally seem happy with it but the wire focusing sounds potentially problematic. >>3489007If you can do it than do it, but I wouldn't count on it. Make sure all the actors have rehearsed. Also depends on how close all the locations are. No lollygagging either.
>>3488549Canons cameras are perfectly capable. But they gimp them so protect their shitty cinema line. Don't listen to>>3488555He's clearly never owned a 5d3. The video quality is terrible.Get a camera from a company that actually puts decent features into their cameras like blackmagic, Panasonic or fuji
So about fuji's lenses. I currently own a 16-50 3.5-5.6. How much better is the 18-55 kit lens?
>>3489093Why would you swap a kit lens with another kit lens
>>3489105I heard it's a lot better than the 16-50.
>>3489080>He's clearly never owned a 5d3. The video quality is terrible. There's no way you can say this with a straight face. You're either trolling or don't know how to use a camera
>>3489007>how viable is it to have 25 scenes shot in a single dayNot very.Unless your scenes are extremely short, your actors have memorised their lines and you're okay with only getting a couple of takes per scene, then this isn't feasible
>>3489007How well are you feeding your team?
>>3489123Not him but either post 5d3 w/timestamp and bread (very important) or shut up. I don't care that they made it the b cam in avengers or whatever.
Got this lil guy for nice pans/timelapses that can make it in my tiny bag for theme parks. My first weekend with it, and it's actually really fucking nice to just whip out and get a great crane-like sweep.
>>3489233I love that the standards of /p/ have now fallen to>anyone not shitting mercilessly on canon cameras has to prove with timestamp that they own the cameraas if it's not fucking common knowledge how great the footage from a 5diii is.

is it better to shoot 1080p h.264 or 720p raw and upscale that?
>>3490107Depends. In general, 1080 is better. But if you know you're delivering for mobile, or will be heavily grading/fucking up exposure, then go 720.
>>3490123So in general i get a sharper image with native compressed 1080p compared to upscaled 720p? Some videos on vimeo tell a different story.https://vimeo.com/85974454
I bought the x-t3 back in november, but I'm really regreting it since it doesn't have ibis/most of the lenses arent stabilized aswell. I know I should buy a gimbal and stuff but that's just extra weight to carry around, I've been thinking of selling the xt3 and buying the gh5 but im just not sure because photog is a hobby of mine too
>>3490107if you get what you need in camera, the 1080. if you are doing lots of post, the 720
>>3490205gh5 is fine for photography and the ibis is outstanding
>>3490254Lots of post as in colours, etc? Working with raw feels far more snappy in kdenlive.
>>3490205learn to shoot handheld more stable or put your shit on a tripod instead of buying a crutch like camera with IBIS or a gimbal right away. if you still feel like you are lacking stability, then consider upgrading
>>3490205If you haven't already, look into post stabilization and wide lenses. The wider the lens, less stab it requires. If that doesn't work, gh5 indeed is a solution. Still image quality isn't a problem, but it's reverse of video. You'll have to put more effort into it in post. m43 jpegs are lousy, no matter the camera, but properly processed raw will be indistinguishable.
>>3490386post stabilization works fine if atleast the lens has IS built in, or if its slowed down a bit, but without any stabilization its really shaky and you cant really get rid of the micro-stutters without the jelly effect. i put a lot of time in post anyway idk i'm torn between trying to switch or not
>>3490399Use a tripod or a monopod. Or buy a camera with ibis. Don’t waste your money on gimbals unless you really need them for run & gun shooting.
I'm looking around online, but I'll ask here early on. What would be something good for recording continuous for 10 hours?I take hobby pictures at a figure expo in Japan. Some folks had interest in watching a stream of the event, but live footage sounds like more trouble than it's worth and somewhat uninteresting due to lines. Since I also don't want to manage three cameras, I was thinking about putting a camera onto a friend, letting it record all day, and then editing the good stuff together. I've got a gopro, but I was hoping for something better suited. Additionally are there any options for a 360 camera?
>>3491227a newish gopro isn't that stupid for something like that because of the small form factor, image stabilization and reasonably small data rates (gopro7 is max 78mbit/s at highest possible quality so 10h is about a TB).hook it up to a xboxhueg powerbank in a backpack and bring enough media and it will work just fine
>>3491257>implying I can basic mathat 78mbit it will take up 351gb in 10 hours
>>3491227>>3491271I've never done it myself, but if I were to attempt it I would (as the other anon says) use gopros. Also, only record at 720p (or even 1080p) and buy a 256gb sd card.
If you ever shot expos, then you would know how terrible lighting is at them, so everything with shitty low light capabilities and withoulw LOG will look absolutely terrible. Also, simply "shooting everything" is a terrible idea. I only shoot stuff i need. And besides you wouldn`t capture everything anyway and then you would die trying to edit it.
>>3491293>log in low lightdon'tI agree with the rest, thoughEditing 10h of footage into something watchable will make you end yourself
>>3491307Expos usually have pretty uneven lighting. If you don`t want half of your image being completely overexposed you`d need LOG. It`s not that lowlight where everything is in shadows and you can`t shoot log anyway. More like lowlight, where smartphone sized sensor of GOPRO will be noisy as hell.
>>3491310>where smartphone sized sensor of GOPRO will be noisy as hellNot him, but log will add noise to the image.
Thanks for the info guys. >>3491293>>3491307Lighting is pretty good in the buildings. The main focus for me is the still photography.I usually end up with 1200+ pictures and edit about 300 for posting (over the course of several months, since it's not like I have a deadline). This is just using my friend as a platform since he's really just walking around looking at shit. For editing the video, I probably wont worry about getting the good as much as removing the bad.I'll put it on youtube, link it to /buyfag/, and just let them pick out what they like.>>3491257>xboxhueg powerbankThat shouldn't be a problem.I usually use one of the five or so available for my own camera and phone.Lots of power left.[EXIF data available. What’s a good length demo for gaining funding for a feature length (or at least 40 minute) film? As in, I have a script I’m working with and shooting myself, and I’m dumping a few thousand of my own money into it (I worked hard for and got a high-six figures job at a tech company that’s extremely desired — I’m using it to funnel capital into my film endeavors). I’m shooting with mediocre gear (Rebel T6, 24mm and 85mm rokinon lenses, have a tripod from my large format camera I’m reusing for this. I may rent some lighting equipment once I secure actors. I live near a top theater program at a top university and I’m sure some students would be willing to work for $15/hr).I know everyone thinks their idea is great, and so I’ll join the cliche and say mine is great. At the least, I’m up and ready to take the risk, and I’m extremely excited. Unfortunately my idea would take at least 40 minutes of screen time to flesh out, but I’ve visualized 10 minutes of scenes that could be done right now and in high style and be coherent enough for a viewer. Is 10 minutes of quality screen time enough to show around and get funding? I don’t mean super mega millions funding obviously. But maybe a few dozen thousand here and there from the university and/or people I know and/or grants (unlikely).
How detrimental would it be to shoot a no-budget film on a 200D? It obviously won't be able to compete with cameras in higher price ranges but would it just be subpar or unusable?
>>3491678Damien Chazelle's short that he made for Whiplash funding was shorter than ten minutes. But, like everything in this industry, it's about who you know.If you don't have a plan for who you're going to show the film to in order to get funding, you need to take a step back and figure that out
>>3491693Short film: Absolutely fine.Feature film: Personally I wouldn't. Seeing it on a decent monitor or in a cinema screen will make it look like shit unless you grade it with that in mind (think Kendy Ty). But you can. In terms of watchable-ness, sound is more important that image quality. Just expose your shots properly

I've been out of the ring for quite a while. Is the A6500 still the best option when looking for lowlight performance and 4K?I would love to go for the flexibility of the gh4 color wise (with an external recorder) but I do much more videography and guerilla work than actual shoots where I could light things up proper.

Tips to get better lighting? I've been making piano cover and turorial videos for around a year now and they just look all bedroom-fan-light-bulb-yellow.
