Nigger just get an f801 for like $30 and some black and white film for $5. It works with your autofocus lenses and your pictures won't look like puke. Use the d7100 for colored shots with lots of detail and/or low light

The way I do "shutter AND aperture priority" on a nikon is like this

Well they're not very interesting. The one with the pigeons is sweet though. It's just that b&w digital is not a good look. There's a reason why there's a bayer filter on your sensor, and the response curve is also so linear that it's just super obvious that it had color at one point which was deliberately removed. That takes away from the immersion because now I'm thinking "okay the photographer is going for a black and white look, but why? what does it add to the photo? what if this was in color, how woueit be different?". If you shot b&w film it would instantly have that effect you're looking for and I'd just think "hey, some b&w images, let's see what they're all about ".

What do you mean anon? An actual filter? I don't see how it would cause muddiness, the worst they can do is cause flare in direct light. That said I don't see a distinct red filter "effect" in your pics, maybe a bit in the OP image.

Why do you bother with a contrast filter on digital though? You could emulate any possible filter during the monochrome conversion since you have all the colour data.

I hate street photography so much. The people in the shots always look so awkward and confused, as if they're just having their picture randomly taken by a stranger (which they are). I could count on one hand the number of "street" photos I've seen in which the human subjects conveyed both meaning and aesthetic beauty to the composition.

I think what he's referring to is just that candid cliche; "they aren't smiling for the camera, therefore it's art". People utilize this approach but don't get past it and so you end up getting an image of a confused person, or a straight-faced person, walking to work while the photographer tries to convince themselves that they just captured a meaningful moment.

If photography isn't just about the facial expression, what's it about? This is what people often fail to ask when they see street photography as just a free-balling alternative to formal portraits.

First of all that's not true and secondly you're just being thick if you're pretending that there can be no difference in the degree of originality or unoriginality. Is taking a picture of you pushing the tower of Pisa the same as taking a picture of a field with mountains and pink clouds in the background? Surely not because the first one leaves 0 room for originality, while the second one might just turn out a great picture that's visually stimulating.
Is taking a picture of a church next to some misty woods the same as another fucking shot of a hasselblad's viewfinder showing the same shot of the horseshoe bend from the same angle as you've seen a million times? Of course not. The church with the misty trees might look like every other shot of churches with misty trees, but you took that shot and anyone would tell you that it looks pleasing, that you chose your angle and light right and ended up with a pretty picture. And that's all that picture is supposed to do. The picture of the hasselblad is trying to go one step beyond that by using a prop, but it's so specific that instead of a sense of nostalgia all you can remember are all those other shots that look just like it. It failed it its attempt to make you feel a specific thing by using a prop, so it failed at its main mission.
Pictures of homeless people and asians making street food and pushing trollies will fail their main mission 99% of the time because they're trying to look like they're making a statement, but really that statement has been made a million times before. You can't evaluate street photography purely based on aesthetics because that's not the point of it.
Your image might work as part of a series, if you can make the narrative be something other than "the hustling and bustling life of x crowded asian city" or "culture shock" or "society and class and shiet". But on its own it fails at what it's supposed to do.

Imagine taking the time out to type all of this garbage. Stop thinking so much and just have fun with your hobby.
When I took that photo all I was thinking was "Hey that steam coming from the meat cooking is pretty neat" snapped a photo a continued on. Same with the photo of the kids and guy in the duck suit, I was thinking "what a wholesome moment" and I snippity snapped a photo. Obviously these photo would work best in a series because that's what I am intending. When taking "street' photo my goal is to document my day, not try and get that one perfect photo. I'm still learning just like most other anons on here, the only way to git gud and have your own unique twist is to just keep shooting.
It's silly to compare photographic genres and the way you should interpreted them to one another.
Also your whole point about the Hassy shot is bogus. Only gear whoring IG fags do this, you wouldn't see that in an exhibition.

I’m aware of the intentions of street photography. I just think that they’re generally implemented horribly. The idea is to capture a spontaneous moment that conveys meaning, that tells a story. Yet, I often find that the lacking composition, and the sheer awkwardness of the models, combine to relegate the photos to meaningless drivel. I’ve seen a few street photos that managed to rise above this, but very few.

Closer shots tend to better. It takes time to get comfortable. Just start shooting and your confidence will build. Avoid shots of people's back. If you've got a dual SD card camera then set the second card to back up your shots so if somebody confronts you you can fake delete it for them. Honestly, most people won't be sure whether or not you took a picture of them and will feel too awkward to ask you. Just broadcast good vibes and they tend to get returned. I admire the balls of anyone who can shoot strangers in the street (with a camera, I mean).

I think these photographs are too noisy and contrasty. The first is distractingly oversaturated and awkwardly framed. I think you should shoot at 1/640, halve the iso (at least), widen the aperture and, in post, resist pushing the clarity and contrast sliders to the right.

Keep shooting away (with a camera, I mean).
