Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders normally have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

>NO ONE CARES WHAT AN EXPERT YOU THINK YOU ARE. IF YOU’RE ASKING BASIC-AS-SHIT QUESTIONS, YOU CAN’T BE ALL THAT GREAT. SEE ABOVE

So why aren't you making a feature film yet?

FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, by a considerable margin
>>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Buy a used canon m50
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Where can I find a good 4k lens?
Anywhere. Your stills have a much higher resolution than 4k. 4k lenses are a meme
>Do I need 4k?
No. It will make your footage look sharper if it’s in focus, and it gives you breathing room in post. But 1080p is still absolutely fine
>>
Bump?
I honestly never expected /vid/ to just die like this...
>>
>>3471069
It just means everyone has graduated from this thread and is too busy out shooting to shitpost here. It has served its purpose and is now surplus to requirements.

I’m shooting a very low budget music video tomorrow. My dslr and a guy with a boom. I have no idea how big the act is. There’s no b roll.
I shoot at 24fps, yeah?
>>
>>3471079
I should add it’s all one shot
>>
>>3471079
Why have you got a sound guy on a music video?

Also frame rate depends on whether you're in a PAL (25) or NTSC (24) zone.
>>
>>3471083
It’s a live performance music video. Super low budget, the sound guy has a boom to some ghetto zoom.
>>
Is there a way to introduce the interlaced video aesthetic to progressive format video (or simply record interlaced with a modern smartphone)

Ideally to get VHS looking footage.
>>
>>3471106
yes

Fake VHS is an aesthetic affront, whatever you are planning do something different.

What is the equipment is this post?
>>
>>3471769
Yeah that's quite a tricky one. Props to their expert DP and editors. Basically you want to open up your curves and just drag the line down to the bottom.
If that doesn't work, open up your brightness and contrast settings and lower them both as far as they can go
>>
>>3471781
Can't be fucked to check. But the "dark souls" of videography is a canon 550d and a 28mm f/2.8

Doing a slideshow in DaVinci Resolve 16, and I am noticing a lot of noise in the photos. How do I remove the noise?

I’m trying to use 3D fusion titles and I am running out of gpu and system resources? I have 128gb eco ram, 2 Xeon 8 core cpus and 2 gti 1080 graphics cards. How can I get resolve to use my system ram as video ram so I don’t run out of video memory? Or so I can balance the load between my two gpus? Or something to make use of all the system resources I have.

Is their a way to prerender files in Resolve so I can get clean good looking footage.

The noise is mostly colored pixels or black or colored splotches on my pictures. In some cases my pictures strobe or turn funky psychedelic colors, and since this is a video for my friends wedding and not for a cool acid party it’s basically unusable.

Thanks in advance anons.

That's retarded. Have the band play to their recording so you can do multiple takes. It sounds like neither your nor the band has put enough thought into preproduction for this to not suck. Have fun

I'm surprised you could find a sound guy willing to perform such an atrocity.

Picking up an X-T3 mainly because it seems more versitle than the Blackmagic. Anyone here have experience with it? Planning on getting the 16-55mm f/2.8
>>
>>3471999
it's a totally different style of camera
xh1 and xt3 are good allround cameras with solid video, but the pocket is something else if you focus entirely on video with all the consequences
>>
>>3471106
You could record a vcr playing on the tv like these guys did in the intro
https://vimeo.com/310684987
>>
>>3472003
I understand it’s a different style of camera but the output doesn’t appear to be that different on the video front. One is plastic, one is magnesium. One can take great stills, and one can’t. What exactly are the advantages of the pocket 4K? If you’re going to want to use an external monitor with either, wouldn’t that negate any benefit from the nicer LCD on the Blackmagic?
>>
>>3472009
>raw workflow, much higher bitrates

>>3472004
I mean, I could capture straight from the VCR if I had tapes, I got all the gear to do that

Was just wondering how to accomplish a similar effect through editing so one could potentially use modern HQ(-ish) footage and get the same aesthetic out of it

>>3471120
Why though?
I'm not even trying to claim that it looks good or god forbid, that I'd make entire videos using purely this aesthetic

But I can certainly imagine use cases where it'd make sense to have a short clip done like this
>>
>>3471880
if you have moving noise on a series of still pictures and/or cgi, either you or your software are/is retarded. or both.
>>

>>
>>3471106
You can try field shifting your video which would mix halves from different frames together, or if you're in the NTSC land then apply a 3:2 pulldown telecine, a typical method of transfering 24p to 60i, provided following processing identifies the content as progressive and nothing else.

They creatively used a 20-stop solar flair nd filter. That filter is the best investment one could make to shoot shots like that.

They actually used 2 or 3 lee solar flair filters in parallel for a total of 40-stops or 60-stops to get that look.

Invest in a matte box if you want to get that look without doing much work in post.

Are variable ND filters are meme?

I went to my local camera store and wanted to buy some variable ND filters but the owner said that he stopped selling them. >>3473162
LX100 / 100mk2
>>
>>3473187

It's like zooms vs primes, you give up quality for conveince or pay extra to get the good stuff. If you have incredibly consistent shooting conditions and only ever need 3 stops of ND for example, then yes get one filter and be done. But if you need the flexibility of a variable then you run into problems w/ color shift and the dreaded x pattern. This is due to the nature of a variable being 2 polarizers stacked on top of each other. Cheap variables also exhibit more flaring and ghosting. If you want the best, get B+W. Ignore the polar pro Peter shillkinnon edition. If on a budget save your money, it's a crap shoot and they're all equally shitty.
>>
>>3473221
That’s why I got a book on how to use a steadycam from amazon. Used. It costs over $100 new and only $30 used.

I plan on putting in the time to learn how to properly use a mechanical stabilizer. The day rate for steadycam operators is rather nice and makes me want to learn.

I got a drone question.

I've got a mavic 2 pro. I love the little fucker from a flying perspective, but I cannot get a good shot with it. No matter what I do there looks likes an extra frame is added once or twice a second, not Consistently, and I've tried everything short of ND filters to fix it, I just don't have those. I have done the 2x frame rate, and multiples up and down from it, I have tried auto, manual, adjusting lighting, shooting over/under exposed. Nothing works 100% of the time, but it seems to do better in low light, moving it around by hand inside the house.

Any ideas? My boss is freaking out because we can't get decent drone footage.

Yep. We're considering going for a DJI Inspire 2 instead but I can't find anything online about it possibly having the same issue, or whether it uses a variable or fixed frame rate.
>>
>>3475150
Trust me, unless there's something you absolutely need that the Inspire can do that the Mavic can't, you want the Mavic. Yeah, pulling out an Inspire looks cooler on the jobsite, but that size difference is killer.

Can you post some footage of the issue somewhere? Maybe you just don't know the right way to describe it to look for it.
>>
>>3475153
Are webms sported on this board?

I agree that realistically there's no reason we'd need more than the Mavic, and I love everything about the drone except this video issue I'mstuck on. My boss is really the one pushing for it. He's under the impression that dropping 8k more on a drone will ensure it works perfectly.
>>
>>3475160
>webms
Honestly no clue, but you can post to like >>>/wsg/ then link it here (make sure to throw up enough random other webms you don't catch a ban)
>He's under the impression that dropping 8k more on a drone will ensure it works perfectly.
Remind him that it's a Chinese company. Also, depending on where you're operating, DJI can lock the fuck down those birds if you're in the wrong airspace if you don't use Litchi instead of the DJI app (plus authorities can ID y'all from the drone's transponder).

But it honestly sounds to me like you just got a defective unit. Maybe force a firmware update if you haven't tried that?

Here's one that goes a bit more into how it may be a thing with the frame rate colliding with monitor/tv refresh rates:
https://greyarro {delete this and put a period} ws/t/my-video-stutters-especially-visible-when-panning/3634/51
>>
>>3475172
>>3475170
Oh, and you are playing it from your computer and not the sd card, right?
>>
>>3475184
Yeah I put them in the hard drive first. I’ve tested on multiple monitors, from 16 to 128gb sd cards. Tried them on my work Mac with whatever the highest cpu/graphics is for that, but also my gaming PC, both on various players, in premiere, and exported from premiere.

The thing I’m thinking could be doing it, assuming it isn’t the drone fucking up, is the variable frame rate. I’m not sure how to process that. I’ve tried changing the frame rate in Premiere from the 27.xxx to 29.97 and matching the sequence and export settings, then this Handbrake program people recommend, but there’s no help after either.
>>
>>3475197
Maybe count the frames between the stutters then set the export framerate to that number?
>>
>>3475204
I haven’t thought of that, but I have timed the stutters and they’re not consistent.

Bro this is fuckin silly.
>>
>>3475207
Oh, and one thing that is different from me to anything I’ve found other people saying is I’ve got the smart controller with the built in screen. I don’t know if you’re Google fu is superior than mine, but I can’t find anything specific to that.
>>
>>3475207
>I have FOUND A FIX to this laggy/choppy video issue.

>The SD card I am using is a sandisk extreme plus 64gb but that's not what fixed my video problem. I noticed only the 4k video from my Mavic 2 pro was laggy/choppy once i imported it into my computer. Anything 2.7k and below looked buttery smooth.

>The fix I found is converting the 4k footage to ProRes using a video converter app like EditReady. Once the footage is converted, it plays back flawlessly! So I believe the problem is actually that our computers can't handle the 4k raw footage and converting the footage first lightens the load. So it's not a problem with the drone/camera/video itself. You can even put in your footage to something like Final Cut Pro, export it to h.264 and voila, you have some nice creamy footage!

>I uploaded the before and after videos - read the titles!

>Hope this helps.

>>
>>3475209

>google fu superior
Really, from what I'm reading it seems that the little bastard just can't handle that amount of datathroughput. It does it well enough they can advertise 4k 60fps, but not really well enough to be able to use it in a lot of cases. Wish I had personal experience, but I only fly an Inspire.

I don't have much of a video setup and it is just for amateur stuff. Just a D3400 and a bunch of manual lenses. I'll be making a gimbal'd stabilizer soonish. That's all pretty easy to do and use except for when focus needs to be changed. There's no auto-focus on manual lenses. I'll be zone focusing obviously, but are there any tricks I may not know for changing focus on a stabilizer rig with a manual lens?

What features would be absolutely necessary for a DSLR camera if I wanted to make American Football highlight videos? I'm definitely on a budget.
>>
>>3475747
a very long lens and a sturdy tripod and head to support it
>>
>>3475747
>>3475751
I'd say a fluid head tripod and a dslr that can shoot at least 60p (if not higher) as well as a telephoto lens

>>
>>3475763

>>
>>3475767
The answer is simply the coatings, construction, and the brand name. Yes, there's definitely a difference between the midrange and the high end, but it may not be enough to make it worthwhile to you.

Which incidentally, is the answer you'd get if you actually bothered looking the shit up. There's no discussion here because it involves some very idiosyncratic things like just how much you need that extra 5%-10% performance that spending 3x more can get you plus I don't particularly care enough about you to try to figure that out.

The rule with gear is get the best stuff that you can afford (remembering everything else you have to spend money on) then make it work. Say you want that extra 5% but don't have any lighting. You're likely better off taking that $200 getting more lights than hunting for that extra performance, but again, I have no clue about you and don't care to know to find out the things necessary to discuss this because this is all super fucking basic stuff.
>>
>>3475770
A nice tele will cost you more than that camera, so I would find the least expensive option to get you the range first. Even at 200mm you'll be running up and down sidelines with a monopod
>>
>>3475770
Also Nikon cameras are a pain to shoot video on.

>>3475812
Canon 6d mkii and not that I can tell
>>
>>3475814
you should just try a basic tiffen ND then. i like a fixed set better than a single variable. some cameras you will need ND-IR, but I haven't heard of it being a 6D concern (reddish color cast). unfortunately filters are a bottomless pit, and my experience is that screw type circular filters are worse than the rectangular matte box versions of the same filter. you have to choose between sharpness, contrast and color cast. you won't get everything.
>>
>>3475818
Thanks anon, this was very helpful
>>
>>3475835
i forgot to mention, the more ND you use, color cast can creep in, so don't think you'll be able to stack 12 stops of ND to shoot f/1.2 in bright light and slow shutter without running into some issues.

Are point and shoot cameras as bad as I think they are? I did a very quick and unscientific test comparing my dad's Lumix and my Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and I was surprised at the difference in quality. I left everything on auto on both and the point and shoot video cam out very under saturated and grainy even though it was bright outside, and the audio was horrible.

Would a used entry level DSLR be much of a jump over my phone for video?
>>
>>3476205
Yes

There are some very good compact cameras, but they're very expensive for what they are.

Thanks guys. I'm considering getting in to trip reports, and the trip reporters I follow seem to use a combination of DSLRs, mirrorless, point and shoots, and action cams
I think I'll stick with my phone for the time being as I don't want to invest too much money in to making videos for something that is not only saturated, but doesn't get many views. If I do find some success I'll try out a DSLR action cam combo
>>
I am using a mechanical gimbal that is balanced for the most part but my camera spins around 360 degrees when I use the gimbal. It’s more of a steadycam without the vest. How do I keep my camera from spinning so it only points in on direction when I am using my gimbal to stabilize a dslr/mirrorless camera and lens.
>>
>>3476259
a steadicam is used with both hands, one hand holds it up on the handle and the other hand is used to "point" the camera by lightly grabbing the stabilizer on the center post directly under or over the gimbal, use your index and thumb to carefully spin it and tilt it up or down to change angles
don't really grab it or you'll introduce shake, but really lightly tap it every now and then to control where it "floats" and correct for spinning and other motion introduced by walking and whatnot or just pan it that way
there's a tonne of youtube videos on that btw
>>
>>3476010
it's not
people want to shill DJI for being better than the chinese knock-offs despite also being a chink company
Moza Air 2 you don't have to dig in the app everytime you want to change settings. Exact same design as Ronin-S but lighterweight and higher payload.

The lens I'm planning on getting is a M.ZUIKO PRO 12-40mm F2.8 mainly for reviews and whatnot. When i was in the camera shop the clerk suggested getting a cheaper prime lens instead. It sort of got me thinking, is it worth getting this lens over something like the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7

Idk man, i thought i had this shit all figured out.
>>
>>3473162
Panny GX85
You can get it very cheap used, and dual stabilization is helpful for both vids/pics. Also looks pretty sleek.
>>
>>3476472
I've been using the Lumix 25mm for a few months and it's pretty versatile if you can get a zoom down the line for longer foc lengths
>>
>>3476488
in what way? the mzuiko pro is apparently pretty sharp
>>
>>3476494
Considering the 12-40mm is about $600 more, I think that the 25mm is really good value for what you pay. It's probably the nicest m4/3 lens I've used for under $200, but if money isn't a factor, the m.zuiko will at least be more flexible.
>>
>>3476499
really though, if the 24mm has no benefit except price and as you say plan around getting a zoom lense, whats the point of getting the 25mm as well?

anyway, what can be said? for a second lets excuse the blazingly obvious things
-cameras out of focus
-your stabilisation is shit
-framing is shockingly back
-color needs better work

the actual subjects are boring as fuck. Im guessing flowers had to be included for some reason? (all intro courses have the caveat).
The only interesting thing is what you did with the head and showing the face for a split second. It was almost phallic in nature, so you could have expanded on that. Give me the written part, I want a bit more context. The song doesnt fit the slow nature of the video.

What did your teachers say? Show them this, i want to know what they think
>>
>>3476973
>What did your teachers say?
The teacher rather liked it, actually. They gave me some shit about me trying to contrast nature with machinery and humans via focus changes and then scene juxtaposition.

>Give me the written part, I want a bit more context.
I didn't write shit. I figured it'd be adequate to just get out there and shoot whatever came to mind since it was a self-portrait and such. Maybe that's why the themes seem boring.
The head and face thing happened almost accidentally. At one point I realized my friend's head was over the sky and the clouds were looking clear, so we went for the shot.
As to context, well, I live in a neighborhood which used to be very green and it's being swallowed by the city at a very fast pace. I didn't know that I was shooting for that until I started checking the material when editing. Maybe that's why the themes came out boring, I didn't know them while I was shooting.

>color needs better work
That's interesting, I hadn't even thought about color. What do you think went awry?

>framing is shockingly back
What does that mean? framing back, I mean. I don't know that term.

Thank you for the feedback.
>>
>>3477007
>They gave me some shit about me trying to contrast nature with machinery and humans via focus changes and then scene juxtaposition.
as in they didnt like it? what plebs in that regard.

>framing
partly because stuff moves out of frame
but also position in the frame
and most importantly direction when youre using an angle. the dutch angle traffic has a lot of nothing but also should be at a different angle

>color
partly because its not balanced in all scenes
partly because theres no emphasis on a specific color
>>
>>3477019
What's it mean for color to be balanced?
What exactly do you mean with direction when I'm using an angle?

I am more interested in playing with the steadycam. I don’t expect Hollywood pay. My goal is to use the steadycam to film two very hot girls fucking each other. Watching girl on girl action is the only payment I need.

I’m pretty sure I could make some serious coin selling the footage to the robots on /r9k/ or making a video about two girls fucking and sucking and jacking off a sperg (I will be the spreg seeing the action and I’ll use the China-special el-cheapo steadycam to show my POV of the hot girls servicing me) and I’ll make my coin selling that video to the spergs on /b/

I have a $60 DSLR mechanical gimbal and I’m getting $150 steadycam vest off of Amazon. I don’t want to pay over $50k for a play toy.

Maybe if my nasty porn videos sell well on /r9k/ and /b/ I’ll invest in a better steadycam system.

The time limit on my DSLR made me get the blackmagic 4k. I was using mostly vintage manual Russian lenses so the lack of autofocus was not a problem. And, the fact that it records directly to an ssd drive via the USB port so I could save money on media costs also make me order the blackmagic. I’m glad I ordered it. The image quality is insanely beautiful and awesomely amazing. And it only cost 1.3k which is much less most DSLRs which impose a time limit on recording and an image with a lesser iq to it.

I also plug my camera into the wall when I use it.

I think DSLRs have a recording time limit for some-type of tax-related reason. Putting a recording time limit let’s them avoid some type of tax.

I don’t understand why they just don release a patch for the camera so that you people can turn off the time limit w/o having to hack the camera but if it were not for the time limit I might have just used my DSLR camera and not have ordered the bmpcc 4k...so everything worked out for the best in the end...
>>
>>3477967
Even though the line is blurry as fuck these days there's a difference in between stills and video cameras, not only in terms of the mentioned tax but of course in tech
So while you can patch out the seemingly artificial time limit pretty easily with some stills cameras some will put a new limit on you by overheating, which is even worse
>>
>>3477983
So ordering the bmpcc 4k was an even better choice I made. Since it is a dedicated video camera, I don’t need to worry about it overheating.
>>
>>3477967
https://www.tested.com/tech/photography/44445-why-digital-cameras-have-a-30-minute-video-recording-limit/

Retarded EU made importing video cameras more expensive than photo cameras, so the 30min limitation is to keep the cameras classified as photo cameras not video cameras.

Don't feel too bad. About a year ago, someone posted in this thread asking us for thoughts on a test shoot they'd done.
It was literally 5 seconds (across two shots) of someone pulling out a gun and pointing it at the camera. They somehow still managed to make a continuity mistake and didn't realise till it was pointed out.
I'll repeat. Across two shots (so only one cut) comprising 5 seconds of footage, they managed to make a glaring continuity mistake (the guy aiming the gun with one hand versus aiming with two hands) and hadn't noticed.

It's all part of the learning process.

Need something excellent in low light and competent shooting video as well as photo (I expect to take on some non-concert work while I'm starting out so I'll want to stay versatile). Preferably under $3,000 if at all possible.

a7s, set of rokinon primes and you're good. The OG can be had for 1100-1300. If you ever move up to uhd delivery you can get an external recorder. Sony ibis is pretty shit and the AF is unsuable on the mk2 anyway. In the meantime, grab a x finder for better ergonomics.

Thanks for your help. Researching the a7s tonight and strongly considering it. The 12 megapixel count is the only thing I'm questioning right now.

Kind of too early for me to tell right now whether I'll actually need the additional resolution, but would an a7 or a7r work for my use case as well? Or would I be missing out on the ISO performance of the a7s?

What are the differences between an Arri and a Red? From what I’ve seen Reds take low light very well and have a grit to them. I have also heard that Reds over heat easily and act bratty. All I have really heard about Arri is that industry people use.
>>
>>3480789
Arri is the most reliable workhorse that will perform exactly as expected in every situation. On top of that, their customer support is excellent and will never let you down.
Red's have better resolution, dynamic range and more power but are less reliable. The company is smaller than Arri and they're newer. Having said that, by no means can it be said to have bad customer support.

It mostly comes down to familiarity. Arri's are the industry standard and will yield no complaints. 'Don't fix what ain't broke'. DoPs use what they're used to using. And, like with canons, Arri has colour science that is probably unmatched.
>>
>>3480691
this is /vid/ right
for video fags?
all shoot 1080.
the lower megapixel count is what allows the pixels to be so big on the full frame sensor. It's how the a7s has such great low light.
You go with the other two and get aliasing. a7 and a7r would not be suitable as both top out at 25,600. a7s iso keeps going to 409,600 although the actually usable range is more around 100k after some denoising. You need all the light you can get, because what are you going to do, bring a giant fresnel everywhere?
search up a7 vs a7r vs a7s high iso lowlight on youtube or vimeo and see for yourself what you think is acceptable

Is it worth getting an ultrawide monitor for editing? People have told me to get 1440p ultrawide if I do, but my budget is more like a 1080p ultrawide. I currently use a 1080p monitor anyway.
>>
>>3481071
if you edit on 1440p youll be able to see a 1:1 of the video
>>
>>3481071
ultrawide is gonna be blatantly better experience for editing than a standard 1080p monitor. The real dilemma is if its better than dual monitors. currently of the fence because everyone speaks to enthusiastically about the ultrawide that I can't tell if its really that much better than dual or its just people being awed by the new experience. almost all comparisons seems to focus on video games and not much from season video editors.
>>
>>3481867
Dual monitors would be better because you could do two things at once. And look at more data.

Why not do duel ultrawide monitors for the best of both worlds.

My usual setup is a monitor for editing and a professional colorist monitor for grading the footage.
>>
>>3481974
>Dual monitors would be better because you could do two things at once.

You can do that with ultrawide monitors and divide the screen into different section. The advantage of ultrawide is that you can have a much larger view of a timeline. Not sure if two ultrawides would be practical though. At that point you would probably need to slightly shift your body to one side to view the second monitor comforatably. If you mount them on top of each other, I could see your head getting tired from looking up for hours.

Maybe the ideal is an ultrawide with a standard size?

Sup bros, I bought a Canon 6D mk II but I don't like how soft it is. This can't come from my lens right? It's a 50mm f 1.8 stm so it should be pretty sharp, right?
I read that the sony a 6300 / 6500 / 6400 / a7s are pretty sharp, what do you think? Who's the sharpest between those and panasonic's g 85 / gh4 / gh5 ?
>>
>>3482504
canon dslr video has always been super soft because of the shitty downsampling
get a gh5 or pocket4k if you want that borderline retarded sharpness from highish bitrate 4:2:2 through no olpf
but all the cameras you listed are absolutely fine in that regard and a tonne sharper than anything non-Cx00 canon
>>
>>3482508
Thanks my friend. Can I please ask you another question?
What if I were to shoot in 4k and then downscale it to get extra sharp footage? Would it take too long or what?
Some Anon in this thread said sonys overheated (except a6400) after 7 minutes of shoothing 4k, what happens when it overheats, does it just burns your hands or does it stop working completely? Because I could wear cooking gloves while filming :).
Also, the OP says 4k lenses are a meme, this means also any lens will have the same sharpness in full HD? what about 4k?
>>
>>3482511
>What if I were to shoot in 4k and then downscale it to get extra sharp footage?
depending on the downsampling algorithms used it might not appear sharper at all but it might still be a good idea to aquire in 4k and downsample in post because of the higher bitrate and to somewhat bypass chroma subsampling - if you got the processing power to spare, that is
>sonys overheated (except a6400) after 7 minutes of shoothing 4k, what happens when it overheats
I only ever experienced it with an a7r2, it says some error message about how it has to cool down, blacks out the screen and stopps recording
that was on a regular summer day after about 30ish minutes of recording a concert (in the shade) so I think it would be fine for most interior shots, but it is annoying yeah
>the OP says 4k lenses are a meme
4k is less than 12 megapixels and every single regular "photo" lens can out resolve that except for the very shittiest cheapo superzooms
so don't worry about "4k certified" lenses, it's nonsense

can i get quick rundown on sony's slog2
>>
>>3483005
it's log as fuck, means the low bitrate 8 bit footage of the a7 series and some others (fs5) falls apart when grading back to a pleasing contrast
you need to overexpose it quite a lot with most sony cameras to keep the shadow detail intact because there will be a lot of noise down there
don't even try to shoot it without a preview lut or cine-ei mode because you can't see and judge shit otherwise, don't forget to bake in the exposure correction into your luts because remember you want to overexpose
>>
>>3482511
6400 is without ibis. For the price it goes, it's pointless. For 4k vid go with Panasonics.
>>
>>3483009
I`d always choose graded Slog footage over cine or rec709, because dynamic range is more important.
>>
>>3483009
Just to add to this: this is the case to various extents with pretty much every camera that shoots log.
Obviously if you're shooting at a higher bitrate with a proper cine camera (or even a gh5) it's less pronounced. But personally I don't shoot log at all anymore for this exact reason.
>>3483038
To each their own. But personally I just aim to get my image as close to final output as I can when I film it, and then just colour grade it as I see fit in post.
If you properly expose the things that need to be exposed, then dynamic range is kind of a meme (I'm exaggerating!)
>>
So I bought the X-T2 today and have a 16-50mm fuji lens.

Any good LUTS out there for documentary style?
>>
>>3483038
>always
you just can't do it always, though.
I do think the same way and like the look of very high dynamic range a lot, I like to have detail in every part of the sky in a backlit shot and in every window in the background of an interior, dunno that's just me and maybe it's just a phase.
but that's why I moved away from a7s and 8 bit 4:2:0 stuff in general, there's just too many cases in which the log is just not usable because it falls apart in post
>>
>>3483093
I'll sell you my CiNeMaTic LuT pAcK for docs, narrative, sci fi, horror films giving you all the dynamic range, creamy bokah, sweet highlight roll-off and beautiful cinematic Arri skintones just for $19.99

did you warp stabilize this entire handheld video or something? It looks horrendous

>>3483251
I did, it took several hours, I actually expected the video to be much more stable afterwards, if you compare it to the unstabilized one, than ''horrendous'' comes to another level.
>>
>>3483255
Here's how an unedited footage looks like.
>inb4 buy a good cam with a stabilizer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCNm7KbOjBY
>>
>>3483257
no need to buy a good camera with a stabilizer, but do you expect people to actually watch that warp stabilized or shaky trash? if you do not want to stabilize for some reason, put your camera on a tripod or seriously practice handheld shooting.
>>
>>3483187
I think the cars are full cgi
>>
>>3483259
People actually watch and like the videos you call trash, because there's a lot of effort put in them and they found them nice and enjoyable, not everyone around is so toxic like you are to hate everything that doesn't fit you.
>>
>>3483286
well your videos have an extremely low view count compared to subscribers which makes me believe that you just engaged in some sort of sub4sub exchange. not to mention that people barely interact with your videos which makes me think that you just spam them in random places to gain viewers. I'll bet your watchtime for each video is at less than 10%.

Also, I'm not being toxic, I was giving you advice. Your videos, as they are right now, are trash. There's 0 effort put into them, you're just walking randomly, without putting thought into composition, stabilization or storytelling.

Do not come to 4chan and expect praise when you are producing shit. You can get that from your friends or family but not here. Faggot

Is their a good Nd filter solution for the bmpcc 4k that would not involve me buying $1,000s of dollars worth of filters. I am looking for something that could go behind my glass and still let me use a speedbooster does such a thing exist?
>>
>>3483355

no
just buy a decent quality 2 and a 4 stop screw-on ND in a largeish size and combine them if you need 6 stops
should run you less than $300 including all the step down rings you'll ever need
>>
>>3483100
Even if i don`t need high dunamic range in my final video ( i like crashed shadows in a daylight), option to control it in post is quite nice. With Cine 2 or Cine 4 if suddenly lighting in your scene changes and say face of someone you shoot is overexposed - you can`t do shit about it.

I know my external monitor from smallHD costs me around $700 but it provides a power solution for the camera. It is a smallhd focus pled monitor.

I guess I’ll just need to wait to add stuff to the camera.

My next purchase will be a nucleus nano focus system so I can pull focus from a flycam redking.

I guess every addon for cinema cameras are expensive.

I am thinking of eventually adding a v-mount or gold-mount battery solution but that can wait for now since all the gigs I have right now provide me with wall current, eliminating the need for an expensive battery solution.
