Lacking motivation to go out and shoot? Want to take photos but don’t know of what? Looking for ways to get better at your craft? Here’s the thread for you!

THIS MONTH’S ASSIGNMENTS - DETAILS EDITION
>1) Photo of only a part of a person, like the hands or the mouth or the eyes.*
>2) Architectural detail. Make a diptych with a shot of the building as a whole if you wish.
>3) “Grace”.
>4) Texture.
*: the part should still be attached to the living body it is part of. Please don't pull a Dahmer on this.
HOW DOES IT WORK
>4 assignments changing every month (LISTED ABOVE) but categorized in 4 recurring themes
>You can try them in any order you like
>Recurring themes are 1) human subject 2) environment 3) abstract concept 4) compositional element
>1) Posed or candid portraits, or taking pictures with humans being a prominent element, like street photography
>2) Landscapes. If you live in a city urbanscapes are acceptable too, but try to get out of town
>3) Something vague and open to interpretation
>4) Having a certain shape, like triangle or circle, or a compositional element, like repetition, diagonal, thirds. The rest is up to you
>You can post more than 1 photo for each assignment but do try to cover every theme per month
>Try to take new photos instead of posting from your archive
>Have fun!

Deadline is on the 15th of every month, but of course you can post results as soon as you have them and get friendly feedback from lovely anons.

DO IT FAGGOTS!!!

I forgot to clearly say the body part should be the subject, it’s meant to be a portrait. In a certain sense it’s a portrait of two pop art portraits, ok

There's something about the lines placement that doesn't convince me. Mainly the only dark areas are on the right, which leaves the big white area on the left unbalanced. Look at some Mondrian to get an idea of good balance. Maybe it's a matter of taste, but a bit more contrast would do the photo better. It's underexposed as well, I think.
>>3464907
Better. The two dark areas divided by the arm and the white one seem more or less the same size. Light seems a bit flat, it makes the fingers fuse together.
>>3465094
It's ok ac, we love you with all your shortcomings. Especially if you post tits.
>>3465553
I think it's ok. No point in nitpicking.
>>3465612
Could have been framed a bit higher to show the eyebrow and less of the burned cheek
>>3465613
Nailed focus. The mouth being barely visible is a bit annoying, I would have included it.
>>3465829
I think it would feel balanced if you cropped the floor to a 5x7 or something similar. Im partial to photos with a human presence, and here it's implied by the empty chairs. Same number as visible portraits too. If I were an artsy fartsy curator I could probably come up with some convoluted explanation for this shot.
>>3466238
You're shooting with a phone so I guess your margin of action is kinda limited. The colors look a bit muddy. Is this overcast weather or shortly after sunset? Soft lighting goes well with grace, but it's underexposed, I guess because the sky is much brighter than the subject. If you get a bit closer you could probably hide the branches and lines on the left behind the wall.
>>3466239
It's a matter of balance like >>3464898, some more space around the metering thingy, straighten your image.
>>3466241
It looks like you took a photo by mistake. There's a lot you could do with these self-portraits. Look up Arno Rafael Minkkinen, he did a series of surrealistic self portraits in the '80.
>>
>>3467274

>>3466423
Yep, it's texture. I would play with the colors to make that pale beige look more yellowish. I think blue and yellow is a good color combo.
>>3466499
The blue lights on the right annoy me. Try to cover them with your thumb, the photo becomes much more coherent color-wise

P.s. check your instagram messages senpai.

You could step to the side to have the sunset reflections around the symbol
>>3467643
Well, I guess it's a detail of the park. You could do a tighter crop to have the bench become a collection of abstract shapes.
>>3467961
Welcome to the wondrous world of photography and its endless possibilities.
>>3468030
Really bad image quality. The light is ok, I like how it goes dark eyebrow-light brow ridge-dark eyelid-light eye. A bit too much forehead. Have you considered not having the subject full frontal and straight? See how the slight inclination in >>3465612 gives the eye a perky, playful expression, even if the lighting is worse, or how the high angle in >>3465613 makes the subject gentle and coy.
>>3468050
Yep, it's texture. If you could move the lights there could be a good image showing the shadows of the embroidery.
>>3468117
Not much of an architectural detail. Not a great photo either, I'm afraid. If you like silhouettes and telephone poles look for @babilonline on instagram.
>>3468284
It's a bit wide to be a detail. I like how the lines connect. There's a Leicafag with a similar eye for composition, is it you switching cameras?

I've had this problem lately, tried may different variables and I've found that unless your fixer is a hardener then you should wait a good 3-5 hours before even touching the negatives since the emulsion is still pretty fragile. Regardless of using Photo Flo.

I won't post the others, but an architectual detail is lowering the scale of the building, a stair is not a detail, the handrail is, the way the structure connects from one element to another is a detail.

A piece of furniture can be an architectural detail when the furniture is part of the architecture itself, a prefabricated chair or table is not this sort of element.

Gah! Now you tell me! And I banged my head in for not finding something that'd fit.
>>
>>3476945
haha, i'm not OP, I just saw this thread with every detail shot being 'wrong' from my perspective (doing my architecture thesis in this very moment)

I'm not sure I would classify it as a detail as it is the slab itself composing the table, but you could also understand the idea as a detail on how it works.

Garbage
I have no idea why you'd conflate going to church with the visual representation of grace but that first shot is very effective.

Some old Fuji Reala 500D again. I hate shooting color film in mixed light but these came out nice. Took the first two in church, all with a 55mm f/2.8 macro.

A play on the word grace really.

New monthly challenge thread time?
>>
>>3480414
Usually OP posts a mass like “critique” and then a new thread
>>
Assignment OP please post, I love these projects

>>3480481
forreal, google up "52 week photography challenge" or whatever period of time.
>>
>>3480482
I’ve done that, well somewhat. I did about 27 weeks because the others I just didn’t like. For these threads usually 3/4 of the assignments I do
>>
>>3480414
ac got banned and ragequit, just copy paste the thread and start another one, and think of a few new themes.
>>
>>3480508
Lol, I’m not ac, I’m Dmitrij and I haven’t ragequitted, I just was without internet for a few days. Also forgot to save a new op image for phoneposting. Someone else picked up coming up with a challenge so I’ll post the new thread next month unless new OP has a taste for making them. Textwall of comments for this thread tomorrow when I get back home

For the space occupied it looks to me like the subject is the waves. I think a more decise angle (30-45° from subject) would work better.
>>3469154
Sunset backlighting would be more graceful in color and soft contrast. Three bands comp with strong straight lines also suggest rigidity rather than grace
>>3469155
Not sure if the texture is the grain or what. I don't think it's nice to say a woman's skin is textured rather than smooth, unless you're doing some very abstract photography
>>3469156
RIP in peace ac.
>>3469749
Good example for above comment
>>3469750
It should be a portrait, this is more apt for texture. What's with the green background?
>>3470291
Is N kill?
>>3470293
Too bad because he finally posted an acceptable image. Soft tones, and the cross shape with light on top deffo says "grace" in the religious meaning
>>3470317
It's quite unflattering. There must be a better way to photograph a belly, even a bulgy one like this. Like sideways, at least there might be a somewhat elegant curve of a protruding belly.
>>3476801
Is this you NM? I preferred the bw eye. This one is too rigid.
>>3476804
I find good that everybody else is either blurred out or wearing solid colors, it makes the pattern stand out more.
>>3476807
It is a sweet moment but a bit short of grace
>>3476899
Ok, it's a portrait of a kinky person, so only showing part of the body without the face is message-appropriate. Bad image quality, phone? Light is rather flat and dull, you could shine it from lower and to the model's right so her left is dark and shows the shape of her side.
>>3476927
It's a complicated shape. Is the top curved? A different time of day might show that, right now the shadow is uniform and it's not easy to decipher those bends. Only the tube is clearly being showed as being a tube by the reflection.

New OP doesn’t know if he has a taste for them yet :^)

Also very elegant composition, I like the suspension above the hand. Could lighting be more diffuse?

Accidental double exposure. Just got a Bronica and I'm still getting used to it.

>>3476928
You really like your macro. Focus seems to be just below the necks, if you wanted to just show texture you could have the faces completely out of focus to abstract from the shape of the object. Or maybe it would just look weird and the focus should be on the faces, I don't know. Just not inbetween.
>>3476942
Thanks for the clarification anon. It's a very loose challenge.
>>3478311
I would crop it a bit, but still leave some black around the texture. Also make a local adjustment so the texture is much lighter than the rest
>>3479253
The toy is the subject here, the little texture there is on the wall is just an aside. Also dark subject and ultrabright background, hmm.
>>3479440
She seems concentrated on looking at the photographer rather than thinking about Amazing Grace
>>3479442
A worse photo compositionally than the previous, but more apt for content
>>3479443
Still you NM? Same comment applies, I preferred the bw
>>3479942
If it was after a long drought then it would deffo be grace, but it needs a context to be understood. Those are graceful shapes tho. Again, softer contrast would help
>>3480007
Is texture the sea? The rocks? The pier? The boats? These could all be texture by themselves, but putting all together makes it difficult to understand
>>3480031
I'm not sure if texture is the grain or what else
>>3480033
I think a proper detail would be a tiny crop of that. Or same point of view with a way longer lens. Like that part in top middle where all the lines of the roof and windows meet.

Yeh, it was to show how the glass distorts stuff. I think I dun goof'd with lighting, a tad too hot.
