I think the 3 of us need a macro thread again.

Post your gear, even if duct tape and spray paint is all that's holding it together (yes, you.)
Post your photos; even the discards if you don't want to share your pro stuff.
You-you there with the mantids, yes you may even post your mantids.

If you do post something, post what gear you are using, and how you took it. Not that this is a gear thread, but knowing does help the rest of us (me).

Camera: Nikon D3400
Lens: Reversed Tamron 12.5-75mm f/1.8 TV lens with DIY lens hood lined with flocking
F-stop: f/8
Focus: maxed to close as possible
Focal Length: 12.5mm
Flash: On camera with flash tube reflector to subject.
Working distance: 20mm
Magnification: 7.16:1
Subject: Unknown moth species.
Focus Stack: 9 images
Notes: This lens does not like bright reflective objects downrange and produces a big purple dot flare dead center in images like this one. Sometimes it can be removed in post, most times not well. The lens hood helps, but not when there's so much reflective stuff downrange like the reflective surface in this image.

The image in the OP is the same setup & subject, but without a bright reflective surface downrange, so no lens flare, and it is a single image not a focus stack.

>Interesting thing about macro is how unrealistic it looks

lol Yeah, that is very true. A lot of it has to do with the fact most macro photos are focus stacked. That has the effect of doing weird things with perspective. Monarch butterfly wing. It uses something like 35 images. The wing was at a 30 degree angle to the camera lens.

That's pretty impressive, do you ever take this setup outside for creatures that are still alive? Or is it not suitable for that?

I use a Nikon F > M42 converter with some old manual tubes and a M42 50mm f/1.8, mostly on f/8 or higher. The DOF is tiny, but stacking isn't an option in most cases.

>How does focus stacking work?
You shift the focus (DOF) across your subject area while shooting. You can get focus ring attachments that auto bracket the focus for you. The stacking part occurs in software, where the software figures out which areas are in focus, then blends the image together resulting in a sharp image across the subject area.
>>
>>3458779
can't you just bracket manually with your hands instead?
>>
>>3458782
You do, you manually twist the focus ring. I'm not a pro, I shoot for fun, but I'm taking it more seriously this year.

The subject looks dead. Get a case like pic related, it makes trapping bugs really easy. Just take the lid off, put the basin around the bug, snap on the lid. I've caught my things this way. Then stick it in the fridge for a bit to make the bug go to sleep and stay groggy for the shoot, then they can fly off when you're done.

With a 4-way rail you can do macro panoramas. You can couple it with focus stacking too. This screenshot shows a number of images that went into making a panorama focus stack of a grasshopper head. Here's is the full size shot of an image that with all 134 images put into one large panorama and focus stacked:

>22MB
>19,192 x 4,085
http://www.mediafire.com/view/4yc79le2ata5cie/DSC_8698a.JPG

It was one of the first few I've attempted. It took a rather long time to do and I messed up in a few places with seams. It is automated focus stacking and a lot of fixing that by hand. The lens and setup is the same as listed in >>3458724 with added tripod and 4-way rail.

>>3458738
You need to move the camera back and forth to move the focus plane (DOF) across the subject. You take photos at every x increment. Then in Photoshop or whatever image editor you use the focus stack function. In Photoshop that entails stacking all the image into a single PDF file, one image per layer, selecting all of them, and auto-blending them. Search "Photoshop focus stack" and there should be a few tutorials. The more extreme the magnification the thinner the DOF and the more image you need to take. 1:1 is pretty easy and you can normally get by with 1-3 images. The 7.16:1 in this thread can take 5-50 images, depending on the subject and what you want to photo. Actual professionals may use 1,000s of images in a single image and tons of hand editing the masks for each layer. I've only done a little bit of hand editing and it takes fucking forever.

Often times, I can get an insect to hold still long enough for a few handheld shots at 7.16:1 and other times I can use a 4-way rail for the shots, indoors.

Same setup as >>3458724 I'm not sure how many images is in this photostack of a jumping spider (Salticidae spp.) 2-3 maybe. Live subject.

>>3458749
>>3458923
...continued

You can still focus stack even hand held. Just take lots of photos and take care to center something. Then when auto-aligning in Photoshop you'll only need to trim some of the boarder off where they are not matching up. It is easier than most people think, but you do need enough light to get your exposure speed fast enough to get rid of motion blur from your hand.

>>3458778
Nice. I once spent an entire day trying to get one caught during take off flight.

>>3458783
For manual don't use the focus ring unless you are doing normal photos. Macro DOF should be so thin that you need to simply move the camera back and forth; either by hand or on a rail.

>>3458791
Don't sell yourself short. The ones I posted aren't that great really. There's a host of mistakes in them.

>>3458794
Nice. I wish my light ring was powerful enough for macro stuff for handheld and thin enough for use with my other stuff with ultra short working distance.

>>3458797
Very neat concept. I could take pics like that all day, just experimenting.

>>3458801
Freezer kills. Fridge makes sleepy. Freezer can also cause condensation on the subject when you take it out and there's high humidity.

When focusing, there's moving the entire camera (hand/rail), moving an internal element (focus ring), or moving the entire lens (bellows). Each will do slightly different things with the perspective and each has its place for what you are trying to accomplish. The biggest factor with macro, and these extreme macro photos I'm posting, is occlusion caused by things close to the lens (insect hair). It isn't as bad with things at say 3 feet working distance.

Keep that in mind and experiment a bit with all the methods you have on the same still subject.

The light may need to be further off to the side or top. Hard to do with macro depending on the setup.

Okay, I went out and took some photos mostly of crawlies. All handheld, all trying to do some focus stacking, all:

Camera: Nikon D3400
Lens: Reversed Tamron 12.5-75mm f/1.8 TV lens with DIY lens hood lined with flocking
F-stop: f/8
Focus: maxed to close as possible
Focal Length: 12.5mm
Flash: On camera with flash tube reflector to subject.
Working distance: 20mm
Magnification: 7.16:1
Image Width: 3.28mm

This is one 3-4 images in a focus stack.

I've loved macro since I was a little kid. Last month I finally bought a camera, used it with a borrowed 60mm tamron for a while, and bought a macro lens last week.
>d3400
>Sigma 105mm
>chinese flash & focus rail.

I love how bugs look like futuristic robots. All the tiny but essential parts to make a living thing live, absolutely mindblowing.

>You-you there with the mantids, yes you may even post your mantids.

Been busy with photogrammetry and not true photography. Finished this guy the other day. Almost have another head ready to print. I have demo-table at a maker fair thing this weekend.

Also it's mantises. They got moved over to their own order and the mantid family got split in 15 families. So mantids just refers to one family of mantises.

Thanks.

lol I noticed the same thing. Most of the ones from >>3460136 to >>3460375 were taken on red bricks, yellow plastic, yellowish wood(treated lumber), and the ants+aphids are golden and yellowish. Even the isopod in >>3460570 was on yellow tinted wood(popsicle stick.) I normally only correct for exposure and shadows.

Not everything is yellow, but I'd rather not repost too much. I'll have to go out and get some more pics in a different location. There's more and more insects every day now that spring is pretty much here.

How does the crop factor work with magnification-ratios?

is a 1:1-fullframe-lens still 1:1 on APS-C, or is it 1.5:1, so above life-size?
>>
>>3460932
1:1 will always be 1:1, though on a crop sensor with the same megapixels (so, more pixel density), it will look more 'zoomed in', because the FoV is smaller.
>>
>>3460883
>the technical side is slowing getting there

Yeah, I jumped in with both feet, but to this day I still don't own a dedicated macro lens. Everything I have is either DIY, extension of some sort, reversed, or all the above (reposted pic).

>there's a long way between technically correct and -good- pictures.

Yeah, that is very true. Getting past the tech hurdle often times drains all the creativity. Setting up studio stuff easy quite taxing sometimes, especially if you are making art with it instead of just documenting. Working with live subjects is pretty difficult of course. This >>3460887 one is pretty good for some aesthetic reason, while this >>3460885 one is okay for starting out with focus stacking. I have hardly any art macro pics studio or not.

>>3460892
yeah, I keep doing that. I think I like, "mantids," better than, "mantises." I should probably just use, "Mantidae," family instead.

Are those 3D printed? If so, how large are they?

>>3460930
I've not used Gimp, but I hear good things,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=271n4yFigfY

Photoshop really makes things easy and automated.

>>3460903
Thanks.

>>3460932
Magnification is the same across all crop factors. Crop factor doesn't really magnify in the first place. You are just seeing less of what could be there if you used a full frame. The entire crop factor thing isn't needed really. I mean there's medium and large formats too, but no one compares them with full frame in respect to, "crop factor."

>Yeah, I jumped in with both feet, but to this day I still don't own a dedicated macro lens.
I used to love diy, but never was really good at it, and now that I have a little bit of disposable income, I don't like half-way there solutions when I can slap down a bit of cash and get the 'good' stuff.
Mad props for dudes that can diy though.
Also, I can now no longer blame equipment when shit doesn't come out like I expected. My own skill is the only limiting factor, can't throw money at that.

Yeah they’re 3d printed. They’re 11.5” tall. I’ve done a bunch of heads only at smaller sizes. Now that I have personal access to a taz6 I’m printing of the heads at 10”. I might end up with access to a printer with a several foot large printing area. It’ll be cool but I’ll need to redo my models. Blowing a bug head up that large and having meaningful detail in the model is difficult.

That image was 12.5mm on the tv lens while this one was at 75mm. I'm not sure the magnification.

>>3460932
>>3460942
>>3460952
Magnification scale is determined exclusively by the width of the camera sensor/film and the size representation of the subject. Meaning, if the sensor is 20mm wide and you take a photo of a ruler where 20mm of the ruler stretches across the entire image then it is 1:1. If you use a camera with a 35mm sensor then at 1:1 the image will show 35mm of the ruler.

If you have 2:1 then the 20mm sensor will give you an image showing 10mm of the ruler. If it were 1:2 then the image would show 40mm of the ruler.

>>3460986
That is quite a job. It'd take forever redoing the models for better detail, but that'd be pretty awesome.

Hey guys.

Looking to get some good detail shots of 2cm-5cm Miniatures for photogrammetry / 3d printing. Less for identical copies (they're not that expensive) and more to change them in 3d modelling software and print at bigger scales or change details.

Have you guys tried to do any photogrammetry / modelling of your photo subjects? What had the best results?

I do a lot of photogrammetry of small objects. The mantis earlier in this thread is a few millimeters across. You want flat even lighting, lots of overlap for your images, and solid black background. The subject ideal would also be flat. I airbrush my mantises matte grey to help with this. Any reflection, translucence, or transparency will mess up the program. I would be prepared to be disappointed in the detail from mini. I suspect they will not enlarge well, especially anything past 2x.

I made a turn table/camera actuater to automate the capture process. No regrets.

I assume you've already gone through some guides. Do you have any detailed questions?
>>

So I'm getting started with Macro - I'm playing with a Nikon d3400 and the Nikon 40mm 1:2.8 Micro (Macro) lens. But with this lens, to get a 1:1, I have to practically be touching the subject. So real basic question, would extension tubes let me get 1:1 shots from further away from the subject?
>>
>>3462270
>black background
>turn table
I watched some videos on it and they specifically said not to do that, and that for good results you want the software to be able to use background details to help it make out shape and depth. Not so?
Or is it the camera you have rotating?

They were scanning much larger objects than a mini though.

You might be right about the detail. I probably wouldn't go larger than 2x regardless. But they're resin sculpts at least, not plastic.

The ones in question come with matte grey primer preapplied, but I'll be sure to prime any unprimed ones I decide to do.

How did you make/automate your capture setup?
>>
>>3462299
>So real basic question, would extension tubes let me get 1:1 shots from further away from the subject?

Nope. It would eat up your working distance even more. The "40mm" part is the problem. You need something more like 60mm to 100mm to get more working distance and be able to use an extension tube.
>>
>>3462299
It'd give you even higher magnification, but at even closer distance. Telephoto lens plus extension tube is what you're looking for. For that purpose every lens behaves differently. You can kinda calculate what magnification rating you'll get on a lens based on it's closest focusing distance, and length of extension tube, but you'll only know how far from the bug you'll be once you test it out.
>>
>>3462442
No, actually I may be wrong. It depends on the lens that you have, and how far back into infinity will it focus with ext tube. You may be able to get 1:1 from further back that way. You go MF then focus as much to the infinity and see what you get. Shouldn't need anything but some 10mm tube for that. Ext. tubes are universal, so there's no harm buying one. Just go with AF ones, so you can later use all your lenses on them.

For small objects use a turn table. If you use a turn table you need to make a true black or true white background (so there's nothing for the software to identify and track). You can also use single colors and then mask that color out later. I started off by using white but the bloom effect I was getting on finer details (like hairs) were causing too many problems so I switched to black. The idea is that the software can only find your subject and is then fooled into thinking your camera is moving around the subject.

>you want the software to be able to use background details to help it make out shape and depth. Not so?
Only for large objects. At a macro scale background details will be so out of focus as to be useless for determining depth.

>but I'll be sure to prime any unprimed ones I decide to do.
Try without doing anything to them first. Only paint them if you have issues with capture. The paint does have dimension and can reduce detail.

Looks like they sell twin-light at around twice the power with more flexibility in lighting position as well. I assumed it wouldn't be as powerful as the native canon but they are basically the same. Yongnuo has to drive them bonkers.

got me a slick macro lens headed my way
any tips/recs for settings to start with to best learn the ropes with? want to shoot mostly critters and whatnot, but will be shooting some flowers and nonliving subjects to practice as well.
pic related, custom settings I assume will be best for macro without having experience shooting macro
>>

When not bothering with flashes, I'm often in aperture, with iso left to cam, but locked to ether 1000 to 4000 at top end, depending on how windy/dark it is. For Very fast critters like bees. Shutter priority, at 1000 and up, everything else the same. 50/50 af-s or mf. Button dedicated for switching between the two gets a lot of use.

Why are you shooting RAW + DNG. DNG is rubbish, a waste of disk space. If you must shoot RAW + Jpg.

>sRGB or AdobeRGB
If you are shooting in RAW then you set this when you export your file from the processor of your choice. Adobe RGB is really only useful if you are exporting for high quality colour glossy magazines, even then you should check with the publication's production manager. For Fine art printing I don't know, ask your printer. For everything else and definitely for on screen display you should use sRGB.
>>
>>3468633
Having said that, if you spend hours on your processing and want to export immediately on the off chance some periodical might get in touch, you can always save down from Adobe RGB to sRGB but not the other way round

>For Fine art printing I don't know, ask your printer.
Usually adobeRGB is fine. You can work in prophoto and then convert to the papers space to take full advantage of the paper's gamut but you are color fagging hard when you do so. It also can be a shit ton of work and hard to get right at time.

Here's prophotorgb over canson platine for instance.
>>
>>3469046
Here's platine within adobeRBG. There's still plenty of the color space that the paper can't reproduce but not really all that much space in the paper that isn't in adobeRGB
>>
>>3469047
Complicating it of course is that most screens are not even showing you full adobergb anyway but are simulating it. Here's adoberbg and color profile of a 27in 5k imac.

Lucky. After the 100th missed focus using af on a D3400 I stopped using it and when full manual. Though, with macro it is all manual anyway. The funny thing is that it has a focus indicator in the OVF, which works better for manual than trying to use AF. The AF will spaz out most of the time.

>>3470596
>tips

When stalking insects, often times I have to use the LCD screen and hold the camera far away, due to the location and angle the subject is in. I found t hat wearing black or very dark clothing really helped reduce glare and reflections on the LCD screen so I could see it far better. Going out, on a sunny day in a white t-shirt, pretty much rendered the LCD completely useless even on highest brightness setting. I prefer using the OVF since it cuts all glare problems and I can see the focus there better than with the LCD.

Same setup as >>3458724 except these changes,
Focal Length: 75mm
F-stop: f/1.8
Magnification: 2.63:1
Focus Stack: 2 images (handheld)

I've been trying to get some more artistic 'super' macro images utilizing the bokeh potential of the f/1.8 on this lens. It is certainly not something that will work well with live subjects. After way too many photos, this was the only one that's half decent for color smears and bokeh. I'll need to play around with it much more. The wide open aperture results in really super soft focus and ultra thin dof. This is hard enough at only 2.63:1. The test shots at 7.16:1 seem almost impossible to stage just right.

Very glad I "splurged" and payed 80 bucks for a speedlight that supported P-TTL instead of a super cheap one that would require manual exposure

I can't help myself. I tried going deeper. I wanted to see if a 2x teleconverter would wreck the 20mm working distance. Turns out it didn't. It was reduced a tiny amount, but I can still take pics without too much extra fuss. This image is the "9" in the "1993" date on a dime. The magnification ratio is 16.3:1

>You can calculate the magnification rate if you take a photo of a ruler.

>28mm lens closest focus:
>1mm = 46.6px (measured with the line tool in Ps from a photo of a ruler)
>6000px (full resolution image width) / 46.6px = 128.75mm image width
>128.75mm / 23.5mm (D3400 sensor width) = 1:5.47 mag. ratio (the subject is 5.47x smaller than real life)

>Same 28mm lens Reversed:
>1mm = 497px
>6000px / 497px = 12.07mm
>23.5mm / 12.07mm = 1.94:1 mag. ratio (the subject is 1.94x larger than real life)

>Very generally,
>1:1 = macro
>2:1 = super macro
>1:2 = close-up
>1:10+ = normal photography
>100:1 = microscopic

Subject distance changes these numbers a bit, but with macro the size of the DOF is pretty thin so that doesn't matter very much. It is really only a problem when you try to calculate things with normal lenses and non-macro. So, if you maintain the same focal length for your macro work with the same lens you'll know what magnification ratio everything will be. If you use a zoom lens, any time you change the focal length to a new one, you'd need to recalculate it again for that setting.

>>3471111
Not bad. What is the magnification ratio?

>>3471005
Neat subject, but is it lacking a little contrast?

>>3471122
Having good equipment really is a blessing.

Here are the lenses on a wasp's eye. I bumped up the ISO a bit too much since I need to make another light tube for the longer setup. Both images are taken handheld. The DOF is pretty thin and I'd need to set up the rail to get some better images than this hot mess of pixels.

It is a whole other world down there.

That's a pretty good ratio. 2:1 to 1:1 are good for just about anything without making things difficult. Reverse rings are really great. I bought tons of off them off ebay for super cheap. But, they take forever to arrive since they come from Taiwan on a boat or something. I use them as reverse rings and for various DIY related things. They actually changed the way I hunt for lenses at second hand shops and on ebay. All those old vintage lenses that don't even fit my camera can all be reversed and used for close-up, macro, and super macro just by slapping a simple reverse ring on the filter threads.

Depending on the lens used, you may need to get an aperture adapter for reverse. It allows the lever for the aperture to be adjusted when there's no aperture ring on the lens (like for newer lenses.) The vintage stuff usually has an aperture ring and doesn't need an aperture adapter.

>>3471166
I agree that this one is better. It is better to very slightly off focus than to have the composition far worse like it is in >>3471159 I thought it was going to be super blurry, but that's not bad.

Do you have a camera you can swap lenses with? Just take the lens off and reverse it. Hold it up to the camera so no light gets in and you can take photos with it. If the aperture lever needs moved to hold open, tape it to hold it in position or use your pinky. Focusing is moving the camera back and forth. Short focal length lenses will have really short working distances so anything from 1/2 to 5 inches. 100mm lenses will have better working distances. Regardless, you just need to find where it is focusing out there in space. 200-500mm lenses won't be all that great for macro.

If you like what you are able to do while juggling the lens then consider getting a $10 reverse ring for the filter threads on your lens. It just needs to match the filter thread diameter and your camera mount.

Yup, you can also use extension tubes. Cheap ones are plastic and don't have AF. Vintage ones are metal tanks and pretty cheap. Expensive ones will have AF but may/may not be metal/plastic.

>Expensive ones
Check aliexpress man. Dirt cheap, most of the time free shipping, and if you search a bit you can find damn good quality stuff, or even the same brands they sell over here with literal 400% markup.
For instance:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Meike-Auto-Focus-Macro-Extension-Tube-Set-Ring-N-AF1-B-for-Nikon-DSLR-AF-AF/32815717930.html

Or:

I've been shopping there for years, their customer service is top notch, all the sellers are closely monitored I think, because if you just shoot them a message (before opening a dispute) they are very eager to help you & fix whatever could've gone wrong.

I recently got a new lens for ultra cheap. It is a wee tiny Zeika Cine 6.5mm prime f/1.9. I don't have a 25mm reverse ring or a 25mm step up ring (I have a 26mm one!). Right now I just drilled a 1" hole in a rear lens cap then hot glued it to a reverse ring and hot glued the lens to the rear lens cap. I put some grey putty on the inside to block light. It is all temporary and I have a 25mm-58mm step up ring on order to go on my 58mm reverse ring that should work well with this. The current hot glue setup gives it 18mm of extension. When I use the step-up ring with reverse ring it'll lose some magnification power, but get a wee bit better IQ of course.

That's weird looking. Sometimes my discards will have some cool formations in the area of the insect that look like some alien landscape.

Damn, I tried taking a pic of my eye once in macro. I think I was blind for an hour and had one good but still blurry pic at like 5:1 or something.
>>
>>3473538
I was trying just to get a shot of my iris at 1:1 but missed focus and in one of the shots you could see that film.
you can see the pic is only 831x554 from a 24MP original image so it's a real tight crop from a real small section of my eye
Decent IQ though

Subject: Cicindela sexguttata
Mangification: 13:1
Panorama: 2 images
Stabilization: 4-way Rail on Tripod

I was going for a complete panorama across the face, for both eyes, but I'm having difficulty getting Ps to do it properly. The green wrinkles in the head are causing problems with the auto features. The original is 9288x3998. At 13:1 the rail seems to have reached its limit while mounted on a tripod. Too many things shift as the dial is turned and there's too much residual vibration. I'll need to rig up a cinder block on solid ground to get better pics that don't have motion blur of some kind (D3400 doesn't have any stabilization.)

That is pretty neat. I once had a similar thing happen with a Collpix L100. The autofocus was spazzing out because of direct sunlight hitting it from a sharp angle. It actually took a photo of the surface of the front element. You could see all the dust on the lens in clear detail.
>>
>>3458724
Very cool. Never seen a moth in such detail.

ah shoot fuck me for not reading above, just realized its not a crop.

but this is great stuff

Yeah, I don't post cropped images. The only crop here is the camera itself. lol If that was a couple cropped images, holy shit, that'd be an amazing camera and lens. lol

13:1 isn't close to 100:1 that a microscope starts at.
>>
>>3473953
microscopes come in all sorts of varieties, anon. I was talking about the stereoscopes used for soldering/inspecting smd. but yes I was being unclear
