I'm currently pointing my domain at tumblr which isn't the best but it's free.
I will probably get some shared hosting, buy a template and use wordpress but want to see what people are using.

My tumblr site : http://emcn.co.uk/

Very decent arch portfolio. I'd venture out to East London more if I were you. Small neighbourhoods in Shadwell, Poplar, Trellick Balfron Tower, Langdon Park, etc. They don't get covered as much as they should.

Cheers and yeah I haven't done much of east London except Canary Wharf and Poplar (pic related is Poplar station). I've had Trellick Tower on my list of locations for a while too. I think my next photo walk will be in the east.

Yep, go for it. Do some scouting from Shadwell to Langdon Park and see what catches your eye. They're both accessible by dlr from west to east. The only reason I mentioned Balfron Tower is because it's similar to Trellick, but not as covered. Hard to find new compositions for trellick since brutalism became an initiation ritual for London hipsterdom. Plus you get parks and flat patches around balfron that give you leeway with compositions. You can actually see it on the right of your Poplar station overhead pass image. Kinda miss London. Keep up the good work.

You can't even get them in focus you nut

Shit, which ones are out of focus. I do some aggressive perspective correction which stretches the pixels - it could be that or I just fucked up.

I like it because it's very straight forward. You have everything that many people need at a first look. Your selection of work is solid and well worked.

But it's kind of annoying that I can't go forward your pics when I open them on loupe, I have to go back to your grid and select another photo again.
>>
>>3441049
Forgot to say thanks for the advice and plan. Will give it a go!

>>3441076
>But it's kind of annoying that I can't go forward your pics when I open them on loupe
Yep, it would be nice if you could scroll through the photos.

As for your site, I like it a lot. Clean and easy to navigate, you can scroll through photos and the content is consistent and decent. It would be nice if the menu came down with you instead of having to go to scroll up each time you want to change gallery.

I dont see the point of the thumbnail grid at the bottom of the galleries in Banff, Banff p.2, Chilean Patagonia and Petrochemical Pollution - it's just repeating what has just been presented.

Petrochemical pollution p.2 is very repetitive and in Petrochemical Pollution it would be nice to have the portrait shots centered.

Apart from that solid work and easy to navigate site.

Hosted on AWS, HTML and CSS is self-made because I kinda wanted to practice it. It's not the greatest looking and because I made it myself, it's very simple and empty but I kinda like it

>>3441027
Agree that Tumblr isn't great. Some of those really wide shots are cool

Love it. Very simple to use and clean, my nitpicks are - I don't like how when you click on a photo it opens it in a new tab and it would be cool to have the gallery name perhaps turn bold when in said gallery.

Content wise, very cohesive style and subjects, I don't fully understand why you have grouped certain photos together, so a brief intro might be useful. The aspect ratio may not be everyone's cup of tea (looks like 16:9?) but gives your photos a cinematic feel.
>>
>>3441099
not going to comment on the photos but I like the site
>>
My site is really basic, which I like. It's only got html right now. What are the added benefits of CSS and is there any recommendations for learning about css.

I'm using squarespace. I've used zenfolio, smugmug, and wix in the past. Squarespace is easily my favorite though it's been some years sine I've used some of the other options. I've also built my website in Dreamweaver and Muse in the past but it just isn't worth it to keep using those programs with how much work it is compared to a decent online builder.

I'd like to see a greater diversity of images on the homepage. Your text is also tiny my display. I would bump up the size or make it responsive to display size. (bumping it would be better). Also 0 text is unsatisfying. Make an about page or something. Like, what is purpose of your website? Sure you have a smidgen of contact at the top but that isn't good enough.

made with squarespace. A lot of people talk shit about squarespace but it's easy to use and kind of made for photo portfolios. prob going to build something from scratch soon when I have time, I initially chose squarespace bcause I was in a hurry and have been busy every time the renewal date comes around

>>3441027
solid for being a tumblr, luv seeing london, my favorite city
>>3441099
site is nice and straightforward, aspect ratio of all the pics is kinda unusual but pics are nice. I grew up in monterey so I recognize a lot of the places in your photos

Noted and thanks!

Easy to use site, but feels a bit clunky if that makes any sense. I think it might be the boarders around the general site and the boxed drop down menus.
I enjoyed looking at the Etymology and Artificial Landscapes best.

Took me a bit of time to work out how to navigate with different things happening depending on where you click. I like the way you have a tumbnail option or a scroll option once you realise how to do it.

Impressive body of work. I like the concept.

Is there a reason why you don't post to IG?

tried it without the lines, I still think I prefer them. Titling is a little clunky though, your right in that aspect.

Currently updating and editing some work. Trying to keep each series short and concise. Planning on adding some travel sections, which small edits to places I've been over the years. Not sure if I should have some written statement for some series, as I know when I'm looking at others work I appreciate it.

I've used cargo collective as hosting, where I'm using the free version. I used their paid service for my design website, and I've been happy with it. Has enough designs to choose from, and let's you apply custom CCS and whatnot.
>>3441027
Some nice architecture work. I see it as more of a blog, rather than a portfolio website. You have a good eye for compositions, my favourites being the more straight on compositions, and I have a soft spot for anything brutalist. Could see you making some nice prints. Way to many shots to really offer a critique. It would be interesting to see how you'd put together a series.

>>3441076
I feel as though you could combine the banff and banff pt. 2 together, same goes for the petrochemical work. Patagonia series is my favourite. I agree with the other anon about removing them thumbnails at the bottom.

>>3441099
Not a fan of the drop shadow that appears once you hover on an image. Some nice shots, however I find the 16:9 nature of all the work a little repetitive.

>>3441228
Not a fan of the large amounts of padding surrounding the site, and I think you could loose the grey line used as a bounding box. Is there a reason all photos are displayed as thumbnails, rather than full size? As for the work, it's interesting. Not photography I'm really drawn to, but you do a good job with interesting lighting and compositions.

Easy to use site and I enjoyed your photos. My main nitpick is the landing page imo should be your first gallery "welcome to yesterday" rather than "things you might have missed" or even the page you get up when you click on the name of your site. "Things you might have missed" is awesome btw!

Thanks for the feedback, and kind words. I figured I would change around the landing page to whatever was most recently uploaded, or what I feel like represents my preferred work at the time.

It's working now! You've got something similar to mine by the looks of things and the layout. I would start by making a landing page, curate some sets of photos / galleries and write a bio / contact page. I like how you can scroll through the photos when you click on them. As for the content - it's a bit of a mixed bag and not really my cupa tea.

Does SquareSpace offer something that Tumblr doesn't or is it hot trash?
>>
>>3442499
I've been following you on instagram since a year now, really fond of your work
>>
>>3448419
I appreciate the kind words!

>>3448358
Squarespace offers a better range of ready to go templates, that seem to favour photography in terms of layout. You'll also have an easier time implementing any code that you might want. Tumblr is a little constricted in terms of what you can do, unless you're willing to put in work in order to customize your site. That being said, Tumblr is free and you might be able to find a template that works for you without having to do anything.

You can also check out cargo collective. It has both free and paid options. I host my photos site there using the free model and it works good enough at this point. There's also Format, and Wix.
