That radioactive sky coupled with the aggressive mid 2000s HDRing on the bark and the absurdly aggressive shadow pulling on the branches and leaves are vomit inducing. Quite like the scene and composition. It has all the makings of a great image. You just went overboard.
>>
>>3443184
i was going for a neon-painterly look but i feel ya on the color overcooking, thats something i still struggle with

since then i always take a break from editing and re-visit my pics the next day, and that seems to fix me from going overboard on editing

also fuck editing the color green
>>
>>3443190
>also fuck editing the color green
hah, I can empathise with that. Force yourself to do your colour grading through tone curves alone. Figure out the colour science through that and map it out through your own processes, rather than relying on a lifetime of random slider pulling and muh luts. It's a learning curve, but worth it.
>>
>>3443204
honestly curves are like the last thing i have to work on editing wise, ive gotten so good at using Hue and selective color ive become dependent, i always think "what difference will curves really make?"
>>
>>3443172
Holy pixels batman
>>
>>3443115
The only good one here that isn't mediocre in the very least. Checks the compostion mark, colors not overdone. Highlights, midtones and shadows balanced all round. Subject is evident.
>>3443172
Worst image here. Absent subject matter, lack of definitive focus. Toss it in the trash. Heavy shadows, not enough midtones, bad use of Curves. I know you can do better. Jesus christ, what a waste of potential

Curves honestly make a huge difference. But it's also very difficult to master, or even use somewhat effectively. To me, the range mask tool is by far the most powerful tool in photoshop though.

>>
>>3443436
Yeah I do think I like that edit more. Do you mind me asking what you did to it? From my guess it's more contrast that did the most
>>
>>3443443
1. Levels > Adjust neutral black point by adjusting each channel to left on (RGB separately)
2. Levels > Increase gamma on RGB channel (mixed), to actually bring out the shadows

If you're doing this on PS with raw file, I'd suggest doing the same 1 step for the highlights (on the right); as well as doing sharpness adjustments on a cloned layer with Unsharp Mask, than altering that same layer to Lighten mode (this way you sharpen up the highlights but keep shadows transition more smooth)

>>3443117
I really like the layout of the scene too. Also agree that the tonemapping/HDR is a little hard on the eyes. If you toned it down in the shadows, it would be a little less jarring. Love the variety of colors in the scene.

>>3443115
Wow, I can confidently say I'll never get a shot like that. Awesome composition. There's some dramatic haloing at where the background mountains hit the sky. Besides that it's pretty flawless.

>>3440505
Such a strong sense of narrative from this shot.

>>3440390
So high quality. Amazing composition and color.

>>3440482
I like how the waves are fun and inviting in the foreground but then the sea is deep and foreboding in the background.

>>3443070
Something about this is giving me a cinema vibe. Maybe the color toning/muted shadows? I like it.

>>3443172
Very textural. I can practically smell them. Maybe increase the highlights to make the berries jump off the screen more?

>>3443255
The way the complimentary colors lay next to each other makes the perceptual saturation really intense. I see a little bit of "saturation-haloing" around the lighthouse. Maybe if the grass weren't also super-saturated it would work, but the saturated sky, lighthouse, and grass are all competing for attention. I'd dull down the sky, grass and even the building a tad (once you dull down the sky and grass, the lighthouse will look even MORE saturated, which is why I suggest reducing it a bit). Interesting image, thanks for contributing.

The contrast is spot on, and it's moody, but I don't really get how the sign relates. I mean why is the sign focused so heavily in the composition? Also the crop makes me feel like I'm missing part of the scene on the bottom. The mood is very creepy though, actually this picture is screaming for a creepy-pasta shoop.

>>3443503
I like how I'm led through the depth of the image with the lines. There's something that looks odd about the bridge in the distance. The saturation would be less, as things that go into the distance get atmospheric perspective. If you notice all the other colors on that plane of depth are much more muted. The bridge having the saturation of the foreground makes it look fake, like it's a matte painting or something. Ignoring that, I'm drawn to the somber color palette and dead trees. Very strong mood with this shot. Btw, what's with the giant white letterboxing?

Colors in the clouds are nice. The composition is kinda crazy. There's no real anchor/path for the eye, so my eye was left zig zagging all over. Lots of interesting details, but chaotic. I'd experiment with closer cropping to simplify the scene.

>>3443652
Beautiful, soft light. Great expression on the model's face. Almost mischievous. The color toning and the grunge on the screen is giving me a corpse vibe to her skin though. I'd either retouch the to smooth out the skin a little or make the dirtiness of the screen really obvious. For some reason it almost seems like a naughty photo of your mom from her youth that you wish you never saw lol. Beautiful image though.

>>3443653
There's a nice concept there. I like the shapes of the land and reflection. The sky is a little lifeless, so this would be better shot right at nightfall when there's still rich color in the sky. Then you'd have blues to compliment the tungsten
orange. The composition is unbalanced - the upper left is so empty and the upper right is heavy with dark value. Better to frame it where there's some counterbalance to the composition. Also there's so much uninteresting area in the shot, maybe cropping in close to the land with the reflection. Nice job getting a foreground in there. Try to focus your camera on the visually drawing part of the scene, in this case the area in the warm light. There's some unpleasant digital noise in the sky. Great job posting for critique, you'll improve really fast if you keep sharing your photos for feedback.
>>
>>3443656
The colors in the sky are so fiery and intense, I love it. With more careful post processing, you could get it so the colors blend more, instead of harshly transitioning like at the trees on the right. I'm not seeing a clear composition. There's leading lines that lead into a dead end. Simplifying by having the focus of the picture being the sky, then include something else like the tops of the trees or something visually interesting and leave the rest out. There's so much stuff that distracts from the sky. While painting is an art of addition, photography is an art of omission. Being able to eliminate the unnecessary clutter in camera will let what drew you to the moment (the fiery sky) to shine, and create an impactful image.

>>3443669
Makes me feel lonely and old. I used to sit at benches like that when I was a kid at camp. Now time has begun to ravage the pews, like it's begun to ravage my body lol. Clean composition.

>>3443672
I like the dreamlike atmosphere, but that second lightpost is leading my eye out of the frame.

>>3443674
Something I find uneasy to look at about how that jet trail cuts through the foreground subjects. I find myself wanting to look away. There's some pretty colors in the sky. Was this taken right before nightfall? Or right before sunrise? I'd like to capture pretty pastel sky like that.

>>3443675
Very impressive. Great black and white conversion, and powerful subject matter. My only critique is that my eye slopes along the top of the mountain from left to right and is led out of the frame. Easily fixed with a gradient vignette towards the right side of the mountain. Lowering the contrast in that area by darkening the whites would let the eye grab on to the tall trees and swing back along the reflection. Really impressive shot. kudos
>>
>>3443676
That's awesome. I thought it was an illustration when I first opened it. I've never seen a landscape look like that. Beautiful gradation of blue/cyan in the sky.

>>3443680
Usually as things recede into the distance they get lighter, less saturated, and lower contrast. Those mountains in the far back being as crisp as the foreground is making it look over processed/unnatural. There's light haloing along the top of the mountains (especially left). The black haloing is what's making the mountains look so dark towards the top. They generally get lighter towards the top, not darker. I'm also seeing a lot of crushed shadows, meaning lacking in detail. There's something unnatural about the sky color as well. Finally, the composition is unclear. Cropping in, maybe a vertical crop of the interesting stream formation leading back to the trees, and then sky. That would remove a lot of the uninteresting treeline, snow, and empty sky while showing off the beautiful stream reflection.

>>3443684
I'd love to know why you think this. What was it you found appealing?

Thank you for the feedback. I obviously need to calibrate my monitor again. I mostly work in black & white, so color is always a challenge to come back to. This a very quick and dirty "proof" of a vertical composition. I'd say it works better.

Why so? I can't compare landscapes to people at all. The only critical thing I can say about this is I have no relation to the people. Sure, a viewer can't connect to these two, still I would be very happy if I had such a shot with me and my girlfriend. I'd be also be very proud If I would have taken the shot. Pose and gestures are wonderful. There's a closed paths with the limbs, a complement with their bodies, hands and expressions seem sensual, she appears very feminine, he's masculine and still sensual and there's tension with these being close to kiss. Background and rim seem soft and undistracting, still highlighting the faces and in the counterpart to the other focus, her left hand. The only thing that weird now, as I'm looking at it for a long time is now, is her right arm in the background, seemingly disconnected, not clearly assignable for her or his arm.

Wow, you really brought out the beauty of your image with that crop. Nicely done.

>Got any tips for editing photos
I've been obsessed with the website creativelive.com. The photography and processing tutorials are TOP TIER. You can buy these high quality lessons for around $30-$250 each, OR you can pay something like 30$ a month to unlock the entire site. Many of the editing lessons there would teach you everything you'd ever need to learn. Here's one example (assuming you're interested in editing landscapes): https://www.creativelive.com/class/post-processing-outdoor-and-travel-photographers-ben-willmore
There are many more from various leading names in the industry. Even though I'm a master of Photoshop, I can still find new techniques on this site. I highly suggest any photographer interested in increasing their skill to check it out. Not affiliated.

>>3443726
Appreciate the in depth analysis. I wish I could take credit for all the things that went right in that photo, but it was dumb beginners luck. I was just snapping away, not even directing the models. I helped the composition with the crop, but most was unintentional during my first year of photography. Nice to know it comes across like I know what I'm doing though lol. Agree about the girl's back arm. Never noticed until you mentioned it.

Few years back used to take photos with an old Pentax K1000, these two are definitely my favorites. Getting back into photography now and I'm planning on getting a decent mirrorless soon.

Wish the colors on this one were more vibrant, and I'd definitely compose it a little different if I had the chance.

Nope. If I had a monetary interest, the'd give me some "discount code" where I'd get a cut of what you pay. Check out the website, seriously. See if anything I said was inaccurate. I used to promote Lynda.com because, up until now, that was the best place to learn high quality editing. Now that I found a site that blows Lynda out of the water, I'm excited to tell people about it.

Also all my posts sound scripted. It's how I talk.

Well I did intend the sun to be behind them, and I did bounce light back into them by holding out a reflector up and to my right, but that's about all the thought I put into it. The pose and the way they're rim lit just kind of happened. I had never shot with that kind of lighting, so I only had a vague idea what would happen. I was planning to do a lot of retouching to make it look passable (like I always did back then), but it ended up surprisingly pleasant. I actually won "photo of the day" a few times with that image on ModelMayhem, but that's not that impressive lol. Appreciate the kind words.

Anyone else feel like there's no positive feedback that feels more legit than when it comes from /p? I usually don't trust people when they give me compliments in person. Either they don't know anything about photography and would rave about a flower shot, or they do have some knowledge and they just point out the positive to be likable. It's hard to find honest critique, except on /p haha. If something sucks, you guys won't hold back. That's what makes this board so awesome.

Those are really beautiful. Love the depth/atmospheric perspective on the first one. The second the contrast is razor sharp, but not overdone. My only critique would be the rocks on the lower right on the first one draw my eye. Great job. Makes me want to buy a Honda.

>>3443874
I sure did a double take when I saw the upside down people. Very interesting location. I do feel that the woman(man?) and the upside down people are fighting for attention. Maybe the trippy reflection could have been the subject of one photo, and the rock-salesperson a different photo. I'd actually crop off the reflection if it were mine. Would make a more impactful, focused portrait. Also I can't really tell what that street vendor is doing. Picking their nose? Popping a pimple? Putting in a contact lens? It's not clear so it's satisfying to me. Besides that, I really love looking at all the stuff that person is selling. It makes me wonder what a day in their life is like - which is a sign of a quality street portrait. Nice contribution.

>How come you’ve started to critique photos and not just edits all of a sudden
Oh, because I've been posting my portraits for feedback in the "recent thread" and this one. It wouldn't feel right not contributing in return. While I don't know shit about gear, I know a ton about composition, color theory, and of course processing, so that's something I can share. (btw please always call me out if I'm wrong about something or you spot bad advice!)

Also I've been thinking about getting into fine art portraiture as a second business. Retouching is still my bread-and-butter, but frequently I'm working on imagery I feel I could have done better. While I do love polishing other photographers stuff, I feel like I've learned enough over the years try making a niche in the photography community. That's the reason I've started posting stuff other than edits.

As much as I love the board, it can get draining, which is why I'm always taking long breaks. Thanks for asking.

Same for me, however, I do enjoy to get feedback through several channels also including peers and competitions. In particular with competitions I learn a lot in comparing winning work to mine and I often see I didn't assess my submissions objectively and neutral enough, although I improved in this a lot.
I always resent this graph 'stages of a photographer'. The only thing I've ever learned is thinking outside the box, to try everything, always in the enthusiasm there's more to grasp.

Very subtle but also coherent compositional elements and in this sense very cinematic. In case someone wonders, a reduced color-set with green, silver and some yellow to orange to brown warmish color range in combination with obvious attention seeking highlight areas make this shot. This makes up for enough to let viewers search for a subject which can be solitude, contrast, slow movement, past.

Contd. to spread additional light.
I do understand that many dismiss it as a bad shot as they esteem impressive scenery rather than composition, artistry, craftsmanship and of course there are different views.

>>3444643
Wew lad, imagine actually talking like this. Simply throwing epithets as something isn't proof of those qualities. It's a fucking snapshot with some consideration for composition. Still-from-movie tier photo. The muted tones coupled with the perspective (taken from the next town with a telephoto) support that still from video feeling: I'm waiting for someone to come out of the house at any moment. It's decent, but it's snapshot tier and doesn't stand on its own.

It's not that people 'esteem impressive scenery' or traditionally exciting subjects over banal ones enhanced by vision, composition and technique - it's that the mismatch between your visual literacy and your actual utterances is so complete and mortifying that one cannot help but cringe in painful embarrassment. What a faggot you are.

I wish I had composed this a bit differently. Should have gone down the slope on the left, and used the treeline better. If this looks overly sharpened and contrasty it's because it's the print file. I redid this for print and only saved the final print. The blacks etc have plenty of detail for print, maybe not so much for screen. It hangs in my room. Still my favorite image of 2018.

I find it difficult to understand why people have such a hard time accepting that someone can have a different taste than them. And of all places, here! We're all posting next to right wing faschists, thriving gay community, brony lovers, animu and manga geeks, weapon efficacious, sports and auto enthusiasts, and I guess, I'm better of not knowing who else.

For all it's worth, I've never commented on anything here. But I have saved these images: >>3443910, >>3443669, >>3443575, >>3443070, >>3443255. They're the ones that I liked. And I find it very easy to see why photographers of them find them appealing and worthy to post. I don't like portraits, and I don't like lighthouses, and I don't like landscapes that are posted here. Technically, and compositionally, there are better quality shots, but they're simply not appealing to me.
>>
>>3444697
Try to understand colors and why filters often reduce and change colors in a certain kind. You should at least recognize intentions even if you do not share them. Presets are a meme, color composition isn't.
>>
>>3444682
Very pleasing colors in a reduced color set. I feel like the mood is lost a bit in the left since highlights appear to be a tad colder there and piano keys do not run along the whole length. The curtain takes up too much space and I'd like to have it tied together to mainly fill the corner and define a left edge. Yet, I see this would also bury the black mic in a dark background
>>
>>3444704
>I don't like lighthouses
>I don't like landscapes
So why did you link a picture of a landscape with a lighthouse in it saying you liked it?
>>

too much negative space. sub framing can only do so much to make a photo interesting, you have to have an interesting subject/lighting as well. a blue jeep is not very inspiring, or aesthetically pleasing. also the window needs to be straightened.

>>
>>3445194
>I understand that you take pleasure in this but it's nowhere near close to light walk
Not the poster but I actually sort of prefer the bottom one for it's simplicity, the isolation the light creates and that it's straightened out.
>>
>>3445196
Greedy cunt. It's a clean journalistic/editorial type shot that does a great job documenting what seems to be a vehicle graveyard which itself seems derelict and further comments on loss of utility and abandonment. The fact that the comp is split in half and the open road is juxtaposed next to the car cemetery with the utility poles framing the empty road also adds to the whole utility-abandonment theme. Both sides of the frame almost make up two subjects that compete for attention, but they're complementary parts of the same story so they tie together nicely. The dry dusty land, muted sky and pastel colours also support the mood. Maaybe would've gone slightly wider to the left. There you go cunt.
>>
>>3445188
Can you upload colored one? I like peaks and dislike digital bw on them.

>people think giving this kind of legitmate, fleshed out and thorough critique is too much to ask for and "greedy"
>would rather just give muh harsh C&C ala "shit sucks kys" or flickr-tier ass-patting "wow great capture fren faved and upvoted"

Is this why /p/ is so shitty?
>>
>>3445213
listen gaylord although that other anon suck dick and likes generic shit he's right you should have added little bit more on the left. and also no owes you any blow jobs you fucking leech.

if you want legit critique then stop being a bitch and make your own separate threads and write some description and ASK for the critique.
>>
>>3445207
Now I can easy follow! I would have made similar arguments, but not considering the image statement that you mentioned. I also suggest a cut to leave the right-most vertical outside the frame
>>
>>3445213
The bit about him/or(you) being a greedy cunt was a joke specifically aimed at the state of /p/. If you weren't so deeply and irreversibly autistic and didn't have an ego ballooned up by faggotry and low IQ, you'd have managed to pick up on that. If I had really thought of him/or(you) as greedy and a cunt, I wouldn't have offered my 2 cents.
>>3445221
Nigger, I don't like generic shit. I like all sorts of shit, some of which generic, some not. Some I have commented on before in this thread. I just like the fact that those three were well executed and had a clear vision.

There are already a couple of threads on favourite photographers so feel free to check those out if you're looking for inspiration.

Sadly the plane I usually fly in is pretty old and the windows cast a strong blue over the entire frame. So all of the pictures I take from it end up being monochromatic blue. I usually change them to B&W to alleviate this.

Fence and foreground take substantial part in this shot although both are rather boring. The mountain chain would be interesting but it came out far too small due to wide angle and panorama. The building should have more space to the left (space in the direction of sight) as light and shadow cause the building to "look left". My focus is slightly left to the superimposed clouds and only there.
Wide angle shots and especially panoramic wide angle shots require foreground interest and ideally repeating subjects or patterns towards the background to give a feel for depth with its reducing size

The first is very multi-faceted, with motif, foreground, middle and background. Some said overloaded, but emptiness is often the problem with wide-angle shots. This one is even harmoniously filled, very dynamic not only by the content, but also by light and shadow. It can be perceived gradually, no matter where the first glance falls. Sun and vanishing point close to each other is another bonus.

>>3445186
Very undefined, some would say without soul. It seems to strive for perfection, but this goal is achieved only in technical terms. Wide angle is a challenge here. Where did the photographer see characteristic? My attention is not held at any area, there's no clear indication of where to look. Another Anon said it's balanced, I even counter, I feel like light and shadow demand a framing towards left.

I experimented with different crops while keeping your ratio. Let me know what you guys think.

Following this, obviously, a crop alone doesn't achieve the impression as the stairs are still prominent. Note how there aren't serious distractions. I'd like to have more of the squares at the right side while having less of the stairway

Regarding your distaste for green: What color space are you using? sRGB doesn't have much room for green, but Adobe RGB has extended green range with the exact same red and blue so there wouldn't be much of a difference to get used to with regard to how color adjustments look with the new xyY coordinates. It's easier to move colors around when you have room to navigate, otherwise you're constantly crashing into the edges of the RGB cube.

Just remember to convert to sRGB for sharing the final image, obviously.
>>
>>3443190
>>3448931
Ah, you were already editing in Adobe RGB judging by the JPEG which was exported in Adobe RGB.

Remember to export in sRGB! It's the Standard RGB color space!

Many sites now support argb, and if they detect srgb display they convert image on the fly. 4chan as well. Icc must be intact, and it'll convert image to the display it's being viewed without problems.
Did a test a while ago on srgb display plugged in and images in various colour formats. If image in argb had icc, colours in thumbnail were still incorrectly displayed, but when image was opened it was properly converted. Image in argb and icc gone, and it didn't display properly. Can't be bothered to test it right now, but if you've srgb display, and see the same happening on this image when you open it, it's still the same.
But, yeah, safest is still to convert into srgb when uploading.

I've seen a lot of your other work on here and on instagram before. This one really stands out against the rest, it doesn't have that horribly overprocessesed background or odd post lighting effects. Most of the work has been done in-camera, or at least you've done a much better work of processing it than usual. I'd agree with you that this one is your best.

I'm another anon. I guess there's also some coloring and stuff like added bokeh balls in this shot that you like. At a local zoo here there's an aquarium which is pretty much the first shot that everyone took in this room. Pic related, ISO1250 35mm f/4 1/25, the aquarium is lighted in black light or purple to blue.

The darkened sky looks unnatural; everything has a white glow in the sky and it's very saturated compared to the rest of the image. I think it would have been better remaining off-white, as it stands it's a hyper-saturated blob of a unique color in an otherwise low-contrast photo with sepia-like colors.

Yes, cyan and pale yellow are opposites and make a complementary color palette but think about what that actually does: the complementary color draws attention. And you're drawing attention to a blob in the sky.

Also fix your scans. This was a simple Find Light and Dark colors operation from Curves' auto window while in a linear gamma color space with a wide gamut and it virtually knocked out the beige black level.

Phoneposting and had to pull it from my old blog. But yeah i noticed the shadows looks wonky. Looks good.
>>
>>3450277
I like how that old woman is enjoying her ice cream, how there's warmth and joy there, with them and the tree in focus, whilst, in contrast, everyone else just walks away "busily", backs turned, to who knows where. Generally, whilst I try to follow basic composition and pay attention to leveling my camera, I mostly try to capture moments or athmosphere, and this picture somehow speaks to me in this regard. Truth be told I never gave it too much thought before.
>>
>>3450292
I didn't notice that about the old woman, didn't even realize she had ice cream. My eyes went to the people walking away, then up top, wasn't sure what the subject was, and decided it was just conveying how a mall feels.

What could you have done to convey what you liked about the scene?

What would you have done differently?
>>
>>3450267

Well yeah of course, but that was intentional. For backlit scenes I always shoot ~1.5 stops underexposed in order to preserve highlight colors.

>>3450262

Not a ton, but there isn’t much money in editorial publishing nowadays. This was $500, but I had a full-page in Hemispheres (United Airlines’ inflight magazine) in January and only made $300, which was double their original offer.

It sure did, and then it sure did.

Like you. Why the absolute FUCK are you posting in a thread titled “Best Photos” and asking “any good?”

Fuck you, dude. You know it’s not good, but even if you’re unsure, you definitely know this isn’t the right place.

What if it really is their best? Judging by the dimensions, the occasional PNG, the file sizes, they may be new.

>>3451089
Kinda? The scene is interesting but you should've shot it higher to get the fence out of the way, also the fence posts probably shouldn't be there. It's crooked judging by the vertical elements in the buildings. It's not really following rule of thirds or golden ratio or anything but I still kinda like the horizontal layout of buildings, but that's something relevant to the scene you photographed and not actually your photograph itself. It would have looked better from another position, perhaps farther away, or higher up, or who knows, I wasn't there.
