Spent a couple hours on this, feedback appreciated.

>>3432754
Nice work. I suggest keeping the most saturated reds in the lips and eyeshadow, Right now my eye is drawn more towards her nails and dress. Skin texture looks great. Maybe slightly too much yellow in the skin. Thanks for contributing!

>>3432759
The black and white really makes it more intense. I'd control the contrast a bit, reducing it in areas you don't want the eye to be pulled. Solid edit. Thanks again.
>>
>>3432797
any way you share the psd for this one please. really want to see how this was done
>>
>>3432797
Thx for the feedback, much appreciated. Yeah the beauty raw I should have desaturated dress/pumped up lips looking at it now the next day. I'm really bad for spending all my time zoomed in and never properly balancing the entire picture. It was a 25min edit and 20 of them were trying to fix her nails, so I had fallen into the trap of the nails had become the focus of the picture for me, and were really the only thing I looked at when I zoomed out. (Fixed poorly I'll add, never tried to paint on nails before so that was a learning experience in itself).
For 'the hag' I was actually torn which direction to go. To try and 'pretty' her, or to emphasize her age and skin condition. The raw looked pretty much perfect to me from the get-go, in the sense of medieval authenticity, skin pustules and all. (I'm sure thats not what they are but fuck it). It seemed a shame to take it all away but I did a bit of editing simply for editing's sake in the spirit of the thread. Again however, I spent 90% of the time focused on her neck below ear, and I didnt even see that I had made the very top of her head the main focus point. Goddamn amateurs.

As for yours, well you managed to Whistlers Mother her. Good choice to leave the single pimple on the chin and the main forehead creases for authenticity, while cleaning up pretty much everything else. She went from 85 to 45 years old. Is that a touch of lens blur added?
If I had to pixel peep just to find a fault of any kind, I would say that the little white thread at the top of her headscarf has inexplicably become black on yours. (The only reason I saw it was because I edited the threads and hairs up top as well and I just wanted to see if you had done the same). But yeah, you took what could have easily have been a 14th century plague victim portrait and turned her back into a late-middle aged mother with a lot of life and love left. I like it.

>dat mottled orange skin across her forehead.
Skin texture is all wrong as well, looks very rough.
>>
Sorry, got super swamped with work for a couple days.

>>3432827
Sure, I'll share it when I get back to my PC.

>>3432899
Clean, solid edit. Nothing stands out as needing correcting. Nice work.

>>3432901
Saturation is very unified throughout the reds, which is much better than the wrong reds being more saturated, drawing the eye. Skin looks nice. If you resized for the board, the smaller version would probably look fine but viewed on the board or fit on screen in a tab it looks under sharpened. Especially the eyes. The giant version looks fine for web though.

>>3432904
I think the highlights are looking compressed, meaning not a lot of tonal depth there. Nice job not crushing the blacks. The desaturated color is appropriate for the subject. My eye is drawn to that little piece of hair hanging down on her forehead, seems like that's the most contrasty part of the image. Thanks for adding to the thead with your triple contribution btw. Nice work on all three.

>>3432929
Overall this is where I think the tonal range for the image looks best. More on the low-key side. The whites could be pushed a little more though. Right now it comes off underexposed, but a simple curve could bring up the whites and fix this. Skin hue looks perfect, but the saturation of the oranges could be pulled back a little. Full size sharpness is fine, but anyone viewing it on the board will see undersharpened eyes. Great work, thanks for contributing.
>>
>>3432959
First impression is the white balance is off. If this was a stylistic choice, I suggest desaturating the highlights to make it seem cleaner. The forehead contouring is too saturated, and needs a little more d&b transition repair work. If the whites were pulled up a bit the exposure would look right. I notice both your look similar in this way. Maybe the contrast on your monitor is set too high, making it look great on your end. If hardware-based calibration isn't an option, simply double-checking the histogram is a great way to make sure this doesn't happen. I like how in this version the reds aren't so intense, making it easier to appreciate the values. Don't forget to resize. Thanks for the double contribution, nicely done. Always nice to see your edits.

>>3433075

Here's the PSD I promised. At the end I duplicated the image and resized, then made a few final tweaks like desaturating her hat, using a couple Nik Color Effex Pro filters (color contrast range, pro contrast, maybe some cross processing), and output sharpening. The main PSD has 93% of the edit though. found here:

Anytime! (during the .01% of the year I'm here)

>>3433848
I've never seen someone do this, great idea. It's super helpful to see the differences like that all lined up. Thanks for taking the time to do that. Since you posted in this thread, you now get critiqued. Next time us a 50% grey background. White and black backgrounds mess up the perception of the contrast. I always keep Photoshop's background at 50% grey too, even though I think it looks so much better with dark grey.

>>3434032
I think you were going for a moody low key atmosphere. It's not working for me for a couple reasons. The highlights in a low key image still need to be properly exposed, it's just that there's much less highlight when compared to midtones and shadow. If you look at your histogram, you'll see you're highlights don't reach anywhere near the end. Second issue is the saturation is too muted for the subject. Might work on a different low key image, but in this it looks off. Thanks for contributing though, hope this helps.

I dont like it. Not because its not done well, for what it is, it is as much as I can tell, but because its not the photographed person anymore. Originally its and old lady and you did a beauty retouch on her, making her skin much more perfect, younger and in the end just fake. Erasing all the flyaway hairs also makes it much more artificial. You even changed her eye color.
Imo, a portrait should do that: Portrait the person they way s/he is.

Like a few edits in this thread, looks like you tried to enhance mood with color toning, but because the color toning is too uniform it comes off looking like a white balance issue. If you want somber cool toning, you have to balance it out with something like warmer shadows or desaturated highlights/shadows so it isn't boringly blue. Also when everything is blue, it makes everything seem less blue in a way because there's nothing to contrast it with. Sometimes you can make an image seem even more cool by including warm or even grey aspects of the image. Nice job considering the narrative and what color would help tell the story.

>>3434052
While removing most of the color makes the details much more clear, part of what makes that image so interesting is all the exciting colors of the city lights at night. So I'd suggest keeping the color. aside from that, the contrast looks good. Pushed the whites just far enough. Thanks for contributing.

>>3434126
Solid edit, nothing stands out as needing correcting. Maybe the colors could be pushed a little more. Nice work.

>>3434187
Skin retouching looks good. Also skin color is nice. I'd push the brightest highlights more. The highlights could use more tonal contrast. I like how you took the time to work on the background, but I'd argue that this image needs less red in the background, not more. The more red in the image, the less the important reds stand out.

>>3434228
Really well done. Great job fine tuning the distortion.

>>3434236
Love this one. The way you were able to get that separation of hue really improves the image. Vignette looks great. Fabulous work.

>>3434362
You are so helpful, thanks again for the time you spent arranging that.

>>3434389
Great. I think 50% opacity over your original edit would be perfect. The subtle cross process is appealing. Thanks for contributing.
>>
>>3434418
Skin color looks right, but the detail and tonal contrast looks really muddy. Whatever method you use for smoothing skin needs improving. What you did also caused a harsh transition in her dress. Thanks for taking the time to share it.

>>3434532
Wow, very cool. You really did some cool digital manipulating here. To make it more real, it needs much chunkier debri getting sucked off the building. Think rebar and cement. Right now it looks like it's being vaporized rather than destroyed by a natural disaster. The color toning great. Thanks for doing such a creative manipulation.

>>3434540
Nice idea. The thing that stands out is the dark halo around the subject and that the texture on her face comes across like some kind of disease. I'd mask it out more on her face, and make it stronger on the background. Thanks for the triple submission, you're awesome.

>>3434797
I like the overall tonal range of the image. The lower key look suits the image. I'd reduce the opacity of your d&b by like 70%. It looks kind of strange now, the way you changed the shadows and highlights makes her anatomy look weird. For example the chin now looks wide and flat. To do dramatic dodge and burn sculpting like that, you really need to have understanding of form, how light behaves, and anatomy. Hang around /ic and read Loomis' books if you want to start learning how to do this in a high quality way. Thanks for contributing to the thread.

>>3434798
I love how the overall cyan toning of the scene makes the orange streaks of light stand out compositionally. The only thing that stands out to me is the color banding in the tunnel. Nicely done.

A lot of solid contributions so far. Here's my take on the beauty edit. Changing her eye color was something I struggled with, but it improves the composition so much I'm just pretending the photographer asked me to do this. I think the red background light was a big mistake for this shoot. It dulls down the rest of the reds perceptually, so I desaturated that area. Critiques always welcome. Here's the PSD, but it's a gigantic mess. When I'm working for clients I always keep my PSDs organized, but for practice threads I just make jumbled chaos.

Really appreciate the well thought out critique. I see what you're saying, especially the skin on her body. I went way too far in the smoothing department there. Regarding her eye color, I didn't change the color, but I changed the lighting. Her eyes would look like that with a bright harsh light hitting it. The photographer could have done this with really precise lighting (the attached edit however... lol). I definitely agree with everything else you said though. What I did was inappropriate for a portrait. This is more movie poster retouching. Thanks again for the crit.

Colours are nice, in this case it should be harsher. Pronounced wrinkles, and shadows. >>3432759 is better, although I'm not fan of bw.

I like idea of this image being processed in a low key way, so good thinking there. The skin midtones and highlights are looking sorta muddy. Bringing up the exposure so the whites are properly exposed should reduce this. Any leftovers could be taken care of with either d&b or something like portraiture. I'm seeing some subtle patches of yellow in the skin. Sharpness on the eyes could be improved. Besides that, nice work. Thanks for contributing and resizing.

Transitions look polished and well shaded. Skin tone looks great.

Skin looks like it's had some low frequency blurring. Lots of cheap filters will give you that effect, I suggest using a different method unless you want images you work on to have that blurry yet sharp hazy skin look. If you're using frequency separation for that, uee a much higher radius for the split. There's zero low frequency texture there. Even models with perfect skin have very subtle grunge. If you want to see this in your image more clearly, look at your edit sized to 40%. Images with low frequency blurring always look even more obvious when they're downsized. viewed as a thumbnail...ect. Attaching example.

Also, the blurring effect has reduced contrast in the shadows of the nose, making it lose depth and look flat.

To do more realistic skin that retains LF texture and retains all depth, I suggest a properly split frequency separation with HF cloning, LF dodge and burn. Once you get good at the d&b it's super quick. I can LF d&b quicker than most can patch tool. You have the eye for it.

Composition-wise, when I let my eye linger on your edit I find my eye is drawn to the saturation in the dress rather than the face. Since this is a beauty shot, I'd pull whatever tricks I had up my sleeve to help guide the viewer's eye towards the eyes and face. Besides that and the saturation of the chipped nail, my eye is drawn to her eyes/face, so composition would be solid after that.

Thanks for the contribution. You definitely have the eye of a great retoucher.

Thanks, appreciate your critique
I'm not sure why both pictures got posterized and mottles when I've posted it; I guess it's some conf I missing on PS on exporting files; when checking it on a proper screen, it looks dark but not mottled; but these I've posted are screwed indeed
I'm going mostly for the natural look and textures when processing, I think it succeed better with this one >>3432935; plenty of details to recover from the cloth and shadows on her skin
