I use a D7200 and a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. Thinking about getting a wider lens to capture the milky way without having to stitch images together.

I'm considering purchasing a ZenithStar 61 to use with my Canon EOS 600D (aka rebel t3i). This stuff sounds so fun.

Samefag, first time actually hanging around on /p/. Not sure how slow this place is but this thread was gonna die before I heroically saved it. I guess /p/ doesn't have much of an interest in astrophotography or photomicrography?

Not stacking, just stitching. I tried stacking too, but aligning the pictures is really hard as I don't use an equatorial mount with a motor drive.

I use Photoshop to correct the RAW files and export them as TIFFs, then I stitch them with the Photomerge plugin. It's not perfect but I haven't found a better option yet.

but anon, that very much depends on the time and how much light is on the horizon, as well as any diffuse moonlight in the atmosphere

in the lowest of light the eye if fully scotopic and essentially only sees black and white, but with mild amounts of light the rods and few cones that are active are largey the blue receptors. this is why moonlight and night skylight appear more blueish to the eye when in fact moonlight is the same spectrum as daylight (this is the purkinje effect). depending on how dark the night is, and where you are between dusk and dawn, the effect will vary.

different philosophies will apply with photography: allow the camera to capture reality or develop the photos to reflect the subjective human experience. i personally prefer to develop "the way i remember it" while others don't bother

I have that, it's an amazing lens for the price. Stars resolve as points wide open. It has some wonky distortion though.
>>
okay this is kind of a long shot, but I'm looking to get some kind of tracker/equatorial mount. Anyone have/used a Fornax Lightrack? I like the idea that its fairly portable and can work with my existing tripod and head.
>>
>>3430864
it's obvious neither of those images were taken during dusk or in moonlight, just look at the stars, they're mostly blue - they shouldn't be
>>
>>3430984
I've personally used an iOptron Skytracker with up to 460mm focal length optics. I think polar alignment matters most. What is your equipment weight?
>>
>>3431050
well, somewhat significant, since I want to use a D800 and a 70-200/2.8, and I've thought about getting the 200-500/5.6E for ordinary terrestrial purposes and, despite it being slow, I'll probably want to at least try it. My impression was that the Lightrack will carry significantly more weight with significantly better tracking than a Skytracker, or that little Vixen Polarie doodad.

I don't want to go all the way up to a full conventional German equatorial mount, since that's getting large enough that it'd be more of a burden to travel with (I'll always be driving at least a few hours to use any of this stuff) and because I'm probably not going to be getting an actual telescope or doing visual observing.
>>
>>3431059
Yeah I used a vixen telescope on it. Total mass about 4kg with everything. You can see my 200mm image further up in the thread.

I think the first one looks better. I get that you want the most detail but you are enhancing noise at this level. Look into stacking (if you haven't already).

It's a nice image. Look into a more sympathetic edit and maybe resample/downscale a little to reduce noise. Normies on insta don't/can't pixel peep. ;)
>>
>>3441664

Really? Sure, there's some noise, but overall the color and lighting seemed a lot more natural and balanced to me.

I experimented with stacking, but it takes a lot of extra time and I don't always get the results I'm looking for. I might give it another shot, or maybe try different exposures for the foreground.

>>
>>3441882
Sorry, I was a bit drunk, it just seems a bit over sharpened. Not noisy as such just "busy". As I said it's a nice image, try not to force it.

With my crappy images I always keep a basic edit as a layer so I can dial back any "out there" edits as need be. It's so easy to become fixated on pixels and lose the overall image/visage.

This isn't a critique of one image as such, just a gentle reminder to trust your gut as to why you decided to point your camera where you did. :)

When you're far enough from the city to see the gegenschein, the Milky Way can be bright enough to cast a shadow and detail around Sagittarius and Scorpius is like marble but the colors are pretty muted and bluish and that detail is slowly lost the closer you get to the city.

Na no auto guiding I remember you need to get Polaris into the o inside the polar scope, then you do a two star alignment picking 2-3 stars in the east and 2-3 stars in the west, but forget what I am supposed to do with the knobs supposed to adjust the azimuth knobs to place the star into the eye piece or some thing like that I'll have to find a video and then do my own video to help me remember
