Really happy with s9+, my old Ricoh GR is retired.

HDR actually helps prevent certain parts of a picture taken on a phone from being blown out like a sky or a light source, you have no idea how many times just turning on HDR can improve the final picture. Most people forget that it exists but it's not surprising since very few companies get it right

The thing with smartphones is that they can do way more than just take photos. You don't even have to spend that much for a good one either, literally any used flagship from the previous generation (Pixel 2, S8, V30) or modern Chinkphone (Mi Mix 2S/3, OP6/6T, P20) take perfectly sufficient photos in the hands of a casual user. I'd argue that a used DSLR and a midrange phone are better for a photographer but the average Joe would rather go for the all-in-one package.

There are some nokia phones that use zeiss lenses for their cameras. Does this mean the picture will be better quality?

The way the colors look on those Nokia phones may be different from other phones due to the optics.
Sony equips their phones with decent sensors but their software isn't exactly the best, shit camera software is usually the culprit for bad camera performance which is why image quality improves significantly when Gcam is ported and used instead of stock software.
