thinking about getting that 50mm, is the build quality mostly what you would expect from other brands 50 1.8 or is it better or worse.

Seems oddly large for what it is.
>>
>>3390536
I'd rank it above canon's though the last I tried was pre-stm.
this is actually a very solid lens aside from the super shit AF

I own both the Sony 50/1.8 and the Canon 50/1.8 STM. Build quality of the Sony is about the same as the Canon, so vastly better than the old Canon 50/1.8 II.

Not really that large for what it is when you take into account that it's a mirrorless lens, so it has to be a little bit longer to account for the lack of a mirror box. Unless you're being optically complicated, a 50mm lens's optics want to be about 50mm from the focal plane, which is a shorter distance from the flange of a DSLR than from the flange of a mirrorless camera.

And I would like to strongly agree that the sony's autofocus is shiiiiiit. Like, get ready to feel like you're using contrast detect autofocus even if you're shooting on a camera with phase detect points. The Canon's autofocus is vastly better. Even the old Canon 50/1.8 II's autofocus is vastly better.

That 80-200mm looks like fun, but I could never spend any "serious" money on something other than my primary system.
The G series looks like crap to me.

It's pretty good.
The Rodagon really performs; it's certainly better than when I was using 100mm f/2 with 100mm of extension.
I'll post some pictures if the thread's still up when I have access to my other computer.

Just applied it some minutes ago, cause I put some on the Revue flash. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't, but what always bothers me is that ugly red dot next to the lens on the M4-P. Might replace the leatherette with some for the M4-2.

Naww, that's my snapshot setup with which I rarely frame. The finder is just there for the rare occasions I really want accurate framing. More like a Cohen approach at which you can get closer to the subject without moving your whole body closer as Gilden does.

That Canon EOS10 with the 2 lenses is a recently picked up at a car boot sale for $20 with around 15 roll of Kodak Gold. Haven't had the time properly use it yet and I'm not a big fan of zoom lenses but I can safely say the 35mm-135mm focuses fast, accurately and is very quiet. That 75mm-300mm hunts like a motherfucker especially @ 300mm.

Hooray, more gear faggotry. Here's the cameras I use very rarely. Got the XA2 only recently and haven't used it. Not shown is an Olympus mju I that is on loan since I got it. Haven't used the Zorki in ages and even got some Zorki 6 around that I don't bother to repair. Some Praktica bodies that didn't even sell for 5eur.

The most used are the 4x5 and Canon P. I use the Nikkormat for slide film, and the Canon has sit still for a while since I’ve been too busy with work to make movies. The Texas Leica is always the extra camera, it’s beautiful and takes great shots but it’s mostly as the median between 35mm and large format when I don’t feel like going out with a big camera but expect landscape-ish shots

Canon 6D (mostly for stills or Timelapses with ML)
24-105 f/4
70-200 f/4

Sony a6300
18-105 f/4

Dji Mavic Air

Rode Mic
Zhiyun Crane 2 Gimbal
Manfrotto Befree Travel Tripod

how is the XA??

the XA is a pretty decent compact with a nice lens. The rangefinder patch isn't super bright, I picked up a XA3 around the same time as the XA and found I was using the XA3 more often. My XA shit it's self and I sold it for parts, my XA3 is always with me where ever I go
>>
>>3404089
*crack*
>>
>>3404169
So if i were to buy a XA go for the XA3?
>>
>>3404241
They're both really different cameras here's some main differences between the two:

>XA
Manual focus rangefinder
Max aperture of f/2.8
Meters up to 800

>XA3
Zone focus camera
Max aperture of f/3.5
Meters up to 1600
Has DX code reader (put tape on the contacts to set ISO manually)

Over all the XA and XA3 and both very respectable cameras and pretty much boils down to personal preference. If you want an f/2.8 lens, with manual focus capability and don't need to meter up to 1600 then the XA is for you. If you want to meter up to 1600 and don't mind zone focusing the XA3 is for you.

Also the XA2 is a worse version of the XA3 but is a lot cheaper, it meters up to 800 (no DX reader) and doesn't have the +1.5 compensation the XA and XA3 have. (I'd pick the XA over the XA2 any day) XA4 is really rare/expensive and is essentially a XA3 with a 28mm macro lens.

>Isn't the sony fe 50 1.8 shit? Even the apsc version with oss is sharper.
The image quality is fine. 50mm is such an easy focal length to make that no 50mm made in the last fifty years or so is optically shitty--the worst you'll ever see is one showing up as slightly sharper at 100% on photos of test charts, but that doesn't mean the other one is shit, just that it's not quite the same level of optical perfection.

That being said, the AUTOFOCUS on the 50/1.8 is shit. Like focusing with older-generation contrast-detect AF even on a camera with phase-detect AF points.

I'm pretty new to photography, this is my grandpas old Revueflex E (rebadged Zenit E from UDSSR) with the Helios 44 (UDSSR) lense mounted and a Pentacon 2.8/135 (GDR)
The selenium-lightmeter still works and reads accurately, although it is pretty useless when it is dark.
Due to its robust single piece die cast aluminium body it is quite heavy at over 900g.

I have the 105 2.8 D. Is it worth the upgrade?
Also how do you like the 24 ts pc?
>>
>>3408357
>i knew that contax can't fail you easy as that.
Say that about the N Digital
>>
>>3414421
I had the D lens before. The sharpness is quite a bit better and the auto focus is actually usable at macro distance on the G. The VR works great for normal use, but with macro not very much.

I also used to have the 50 1.4D, but I actually miss the old one. The G is technically sharper, but it's focusing is slow and finicky compared to the damn near instant response on the D
The 24 PC lens is my absolute favorite for cityscapes now. My only complaint is the tension screw for the slider is tiny for how often you use it.

Want to cut down on the gear a bit, so am planning to sell the 14-24mm lens as I don't shoot ultra-wide very often and it's quite impractical due to its weight/bulk/no filters.
Also planning to sell the 18-200mm as the VR doesn't work and the AF gets stuck. Not sure if it's worth much though...

So do you like the 105mm more than the 60mm? I have a 55mm AI macro and it would be nice to upgrade to something with AF and I'm thinking probably a longer focal length too.

>>3415897
Yeah longer is better for my uses.
And the AF is spot on at all distances with the 105.
The 60 seemed a bit off one way or the other at macro distances and I could never fine tune it out and just ended up manually focusing anyway.

I got the 105mm 2.8D Micro for Christmas from Santa (me). I couldn't be happier with it.

It's my first D lens. On my old d7000 the AF is faster (with the limiter on) and quieter than I expected. Image quality on a 16mp crop frame is excellent.

The 135 is stunning (especially for portraits) and definitely the sharpest lens I own. I only got it recently (~3 months ago) but it’s been on my camera more than any other lens of late, although the Tamron 70-200 is also fantastic (both are unfortunately quite bulky and heavy).

However, the 135 wasn’t good out of the box, as the AF sucked and needed to be fine-tuned in camera. Even after tuning it, I still miss the subject’s eye sometimes when the lens is wide open, although this may be more due to my own shoddy technique. Overall though, I’m really happy with the 135, so much so that I was considering getting more of the “Art” series lenses. I only hesitate because:
- The AF issue is a bit concerning (haven’t had to do any serious fine tuning to my other lenses, including the Tamrons).
- I'm reluctant to spend more money on F-mount lenses right now (will probably get a Z-series camera eventually).

Thanks, I tried a sony A7ii and hated it.
Nikon nailed the ergonomics for people with big hands, which is surprising for something coming from japan.
>>
>>3419063
Very nice! Hope you enjoy the z6 anon.

Please report back here when you've had time to properly try it out and let us know what you think.

Seriously tempted to get one myself.

After playing around with it for an afternoon I can say it is even better than I expected.
I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Nice gear anon. Especially like the d850 box, which is a nice touch.

Btw, how is the 58mm/1.4? I've heard it has great bokeh.
Also, did you have any issues with the AF on the Sigma lens?
>>
>>3419110
>which is surprising for something coming from japan
Canon does it quite well.
All the Nikons I've layed hands on had too small of grips for my taste.
>>
>>3419308

58/1.4G has some problems. Softness at f1.4 isn't that bad imo because I rarely print large. And its plenty sharp at f2 onwards.
It has loads and loads of chromatic aberrations and for high contrast scenes its easy to correct but when bokeh starts to have green rings it's not that easy anymore. A bit mixed feelings about it. When it delivers it does it very well. Obviously not worth the price since you get 95% of the performance with 50/1.4G or D.

Sigma 35mm is a real beast. I've never had any problems with it. AF is spot on.
>>
>>3419269
You got some cool gear anon.
Would you recomend tha coolpix A as a pocket camera these days?

Also, whats the story with just having the D850 box?
>>
>>3419352

This Coolpix A has seen three continents about 20 countries and after more than 75k clicks it still goes on. I have dropped it several times and opened bottle caps with it. Worked flawlessly at -25 degrees of celsius weather (I had couple extra batteries with me) in Lapland. Rubbery thumb rest fell off a long time ago and paint is stripping from the corners. Sand, water or chilly weather hasnt stopped this thing yet. Build quality is top notch.

I dont mind it doesnt have a viewfinder, my complaints are the focal lenght and aperture (28/2.8 35mm equiv.) I would prefer 35/2. Also AF is a bit slow and prone to hunting in low light. Good thing is that is has a manual focus ring which helps a lot in the dark.

Currently these sell for 200euros here in euroland, its absolutely worth that.

I'm still thinking if I should keep D850 or not. I need the box for returning.
>>
>>3419361
Interested in picking on of the coolpix up then.
I have a D800 and a D850 too. I like the tilt screen, 4k and the focus peaking but wish it had a popup flash to run commander mode for my SB-600.
>>
>>3419365

My D800 has almost 200k clicks now so it's soon to be replaced with something. So D850, Z6/7 or a7III? I dont know yet. I wish Nikon would release the next gen of mirrorless now. Guess I have to wait couple years.
>>
>>3419369
With all that nice Nikkor glass I think I'd go Z6/Z7.

It is a 800mm F/8 mirror lense, so no surprise.
The cropfactor of my Canon pushes it to an effective focal length of 1280mm

They aren't all that big. Yours is the classic sigma design that iirc everyone else adopted.

The size of mine seems to be somewhere between the 1000mm and the 500mm of yours, wich fits to its focal length.
Also my EOS 2000D isn`t exactly a verry large body.
For reference: the lensecap is 105 mm

yeah theres another 600mm design, it looks almost identical to the green sigma 600 but it's got a smaller diameter... made primarily for canon iirc.. i accidentally bought one years ago thinking it was the larger sigma/bower/chinesium style. It's a strange thing for a lens to look so similar and yet not be the same.
Presumably the smaller one is a visual copy of the sigma, but an attempt to reduce size like the tamron 500mm 55BB iirc.... on the left in >>>>3421475 ... because that is a nice lens. focus helicoid is really smooth. Just very dark to look through unless all you are using is high contrast ground glass. A split prism of any kind is useless.

I just got the Z 6 and it's worth it even before the new firmware.

I have nearly the same lens set with minor changes and only the old non vc tamron 70-200 doesn't play nice with the camera.

Really tempted to get a Z6 myself.

Can you please go into a little more detail about what features you like best about it? What does it do better than your previous camera (D800?)? Thx
>>
>>3422603
What does it do better than your previous camera (D800?)?

1. Video (4k, 1080@120fps, flat profiles, n-log 10bit out, more accurate autofocus tracking)

2. Manual glass adaptation (focus peaking, focus zoom, 3m+ pixel EVF that looks like augmented reality with almost 0 lag.)

3. High ISO (The D800 was never that bad but this is a step up.)

4. An auto mode. (You will laugh but I can't count the times I wished I had a dummy proof full auto mode on the D800 when I wanted some non photographer to take my picture without having to either give them a mini course on photography and how to run a D800 or go in and manually set things to dummy mode. Now I can set it to auto and tell them to make sure the horizon is level and that's about it. Then I can go back to manual or what ever and all my settings are just like I left them.)

4.IBIS (I can shoot the 50 mm at 1/10 and 200mm at 1/30 with no motion blur nearly 100% of the time. This really improves my keeper rate. I mean look at my glass, I only have 1 lens with any VR/VC and that is the 15-30 tamron that barely needs it.)

5. Silent shooting (The D800 is a noisy beast.)

6. Shutter speed. (12fps vs 4fps There is stuff I just didn't bother shooting because I didn't think I could get it.

7. Weight (Even with the FTZ adapter it's significantly lighter than a D800)

8. Wireless tether (Snap bridge on the Z 6 works great I get 2mp jpgs straight to my phone over bluetooth as i'm shooting, I can join the camera's hotspot with my laptop and get raws and full jpgs wirelessly saved to a folder as I shoot. I can remote control the camera and all shooting settings and do tap to focus from my phone over wifi with a copy of the photo saved to both my camera and my phone. I can also record video from the camera straight to my phone, how cool is that?)

9.Usb Charging (I can charge the camera's battery off of one of those usb battery packs or my phone charger.)

10.Highlight priority spot metering.

I just have this little set for now but it's very nice gear.
The 50mm Macro is for my ebay pages.
The 35mm is for vacation shots and regular shooting.

Next step I want either the new Tamron RXD zoom, or something like F1,8 or 1,4 for low light environments. But I don't have a need for them yet.
F2,8 has proven to be good enough for me when it gets a bit dark.
