will small trucks ever make a comeback?
>>

No.

No because I need the widest, longest, and tallest full size truck in order to haul one 90lb bag of cement. Try doing that in your shitty mid size. Also it makes me feel better about my 4 inch packer.
>>
I don't see why desu, I have a single cab short bed f150 with the 5.0 and I regularly get 24 mpg.

Is it worth the maybe 10-15% increase in mpg for a much larger hit in capability/space?

My new Ram cost as much as a new midsize truck except it had a lot more space, and a V8. Mileage isn't even that much worse and gas is relatively inexpensive
Even in cities like NYC Suburbans are popular Ubers there so a half ton should have enough room

Nothing wrong with reasonable body lifts, they provide much needed clearance for things like motor mount and transmission mount lifts.

You know an American boat is well over 5000lbs right? Travel trailers are usually ~7k lbs for a lightweight 25'. You aren't towing that safely with a car...
>>
>>21046153
The 10k lb truck is still magnitudes safer just because of the added weight over a car, the wheelbase and width and the drivetrain and brakes to handle that weight.
>>
>>21046898
Not to mention the driver's weight.
>>
>>21046898
can someone explain that boat trailer to me?

i dont fucking get it
>>
>>21046898
Regular cars usually have a 2000kg top limit, above that we usually use vans.
>>
>>21046898
Why do Americans love putting a metric ton of tongue weight on their hitch so much? The only trailers with the axles this far back should be fifth wheels.
>>
>>21046916
The boat is titled because otherwise the trailer would exceed legal width limits.
>>
>>21046932
oh... i guess that makes sense
>>
>>21046916
It looks like the trailer tilts the boat to make the load narrower. Laying flat the width would probably be oversize for a single lane of traffic.

>>21046929
The boat is probably pretty light in the front. I'd imagine that the axles are that far back because that's roughly where the boat's center of mass is.

You know for somewhere with all that road safety law cuckery you people really don't use your brains when it comes to towing. Tongue weight is extremely important for safe towing too much or too little can get dangerous quick. You people think it's okay to have negative tongue weight which is a no go here. That's why your towing capabilities are so different.

goddamn thats so tacky and ugly i fucking hate new cars
>>
>>21046956
>You people think it's okay to have negative tongue weight
No we don't, but excessive tongue weight is equally retarded and will make your steering lighter. Rule of thumb here is 5% of trailer weight should be tongue weight, rule of thumb in the US seems to be AYY LMAO JUST LOAD EVERYTHING ALL THE WAY FORWARD MY TRUCK CAN HANDLE IT.
>>
>>21046995
That guy is running too much tongue weight and should also be using load equalization bars which help a lot. It's more than likely a case of his shitty aftermarket lift kit not handling the weight.

>>21048933
Single cab short beds are relatively light for a truck. They can easily do that on the highway as the engine is just chilling along.

>>21049839
Semi tractors don't weight 40 tons...The load is always going to weigh more. Who's going to be more stable? A 140lb guy with a midget on his back or a 250lb guy with a midget on his back? Sure your car can easily tow a little 1200lb zodiac boat but here in America the boat trailer alone weighs more than that. It's just a different scale. That's why a car can tow 3000lbs in europe but 500lbs or nothing in America.
>>
If by small you mean midsize, yeah they booming rn. If by small you mean real mini trucks, they were never good to begin with. The dakota was the true midsize with a V8 all the way back when the og ranger and s10 were out with little I4s then later got V6s. If you are okay with a 4 cylinder truck, you should just get a car. If you want a V6 truck, get a crossover.
>>
small trucks are too good for tradesmen, easy to park on sites and work out of

they wont make simple 2 door manual trucks because of how useful they are, they want to make bigger trucks (that have a higher chance to collide with bigger trucks) simply because of marketing.

most truck companies got the name and recognition they have FROM the small trucks they made, and its only been downhill sine they stopped.
>>
>>21050371
>If you want a V6 truck, get a crossover.
unibody.....
>>
>>21050972
A half ton is easy enough to park. They have multiple exterior cameras now so even the dumbest soccer moms can still park them. You will never see any manual trucks because they're useless. Why would you want to make the job harder? That effort put into the clutch pedal and gear lever gould have been put into completing the job. People don't want small trucks because a half ton is marginally bigger but is overall better and more comfortable to live with while getting the same or better mileage. Ford, Dodge and GM have always marketed their 1500's as their bread and butter in the truck division.

This. Nobody(smart) starts out their business out of the back of a mid-size barring an early 2000s v8 Dakota. Halftons are similarly priced, not built out of passenger car parts, and get similar gas mileage. Dodge(trucks) got famous for the Cummins, ford because ford, and Chevy because they introduced the first diesel. Nobody gives a fuck about the ranger, or the colorado for an actual purpose work truck. Dakotas get by because they're dirt cheap and usually rust to the ground before the motor develop serious issues.

>Semi tractors don't weight 40 tons...The load is always going to weigh more.

Nearly half the load is on the semi tractors back wheels. For pickups only 10% of the trailer weight should be on the hitch. This is a poor comparison

>Who's going to be more stable? A 140lb guy with a midget on his back or a 250lb guy with a midget on his back?

This is also a poor comparison. A true comparison would be a 120 lbs guy with a 50 lbs child on his back vs a 250 lbs guy with a 750 lbs guy on his back.

I think theres a fundamental difference in the range of boat sizes Americans and Europeans can practically use. Obviously Europe being a more compact area in general will be better suited to smaller boats and cars to tow with. I don't think its necessarily bad Euros can tow with small cars, but they will not be sufficient for boats and trailers of much larger scale.

I dont mind when people use any truck for a purpose, but its these supertrucks that are being used as fasion that make me mad.

They wear at the same rate. The larger beefier components are to stop it collapsing under load but even unloaded they will wear just as quickly as a car. A mm of play in a ball joint is the same kind of bad in a truck as a car.
>>
Unfortunately no.

Which is a shame because the only truck I'd consider buying is a short bed single cab colorado with a 4 cyl and a hand shake transmission.

I live alone. I drive alone most of the time. I sometimes buy large things, and maybe I'd like to trailer a 2k lb car every once in a while.

I'm starting to see more and more of the 2019 GM trucks. They're still too new and the looks aren't for everybody so it'll take some time before they get close to Ram's or Fords numbers. Most people know better than to buy a new gen GM product so next year the sales should be better. Keep in mind you need a buy a new Ford or RAM every 2 years.

I did hear some guy take off from a light in a 2019 GM truck and it made a pretty fucking horrific noise. Something in the driveline had a fuckload of play.

Probably because paying $10k+ for a 25 year old, 120hp truck is pretty retarded when a domestic truck does the same shit. In canada they kind of make sense at 15 years old but then then you're paying $10k+ for a 15 year old truck.

80% of my friends bought dodge / ram and everyone who bought one has had issues with it
Window switches, mirror adjustment, disintergrating seat leather on a fuckin Laramie, fucked transmissions needing a full replacement within a month of driving it off the lot, parts wearing out prematurely, interior rattles far more than it should for a truck of its age
Everyone knows rams are cheap for a reason. FCA has terrible quality control, and their cars fall apart quickly

I've only seen 2 or 3 of the new rangers on the roads here. They're not as overpriced as I thought they'd be but they still cost as much as a ecoboost or 5.0 F150 XLT. That's going to be a really hard sell. I can see that little 2.3 sucking as much fuel as it's bigger siblings under load. Unless you can't fit a half ton in your garage or parkade there's zero reasons to get a small truck over one.

>>21082150
I'm seeing 15-18 for the 5.0 and 18-25 for the 2.3 Ranger on Fuelly. The Ranger seems like a better version of the Ridgeline, imo. A truck for people who only occasionally need a truck, and the rest of the time just need something comfy to get around. I bet it would make a badass offroad machine with a small lift and locking front diff.

I think the issue Ford will run into with the Ranger is that the people who fall into that category probably don't want to spend the money on a new Ranger or can't afford it, so they'll get a used full-size. Fleets will of course stick with base model F150s. So the market for the Ranger either can't afford it or has the money and no reason not to buy a loaded F150. This is going to translate into poor new sales, although I bet it'll be hot on the used market in 5 years.

>>21082167
I hope so. I really want it to do well.
