Both of my parents were usaf jet pilots 30-31 years of service and I've been in so many planes, flown planes a little, and spent a lot of my youth in hangar bays waiting for my parents to get done with work. I've worked on air bases, in aviation museums, and flight sims.But no, I'm just not really into planes, or boats for that matter; I think cars are the most fun because oversteer.
I have a friend who is a helicopter pilot way way way north in canada like north as it gets. He says its always dark, cold, no pussy and all there is to do is drink(which is actually illegal in the territories of canada)Sounds like shit but he sends me some pretty fuckin scenic snapchats

Why is it that even putting around doing dead reckoning at economy cruise speed in a cherokee is more fun than doing a track day in my car which is literally faster than the plane? Don't even get me started on how a track day compares to some intermediate aerobatics training in a Decathlon...
I took flying lessons long enough to solo a 172 twice, but it was too expensive for me to keep doing (I was fresh out of high school and still working fast food at the time). Now 11 years later I have a very good job and sometimes think about taking lessons again but my other expensive hobbies, cars and guns, keep taking priority.

As for radio communications listening in on a scanner would help you get more used to the controller cadence and terms. I honestly never had any trouble with that stuff so I can't tell you how to gain the confidence but maybe my competence and confidence was due to hundreds of hours of sim time in high school and many hours listening to local UNICOM and departure/approach. I was already very used to the terminology and sound of comms and the sim time in FS98-2004 over many years made my IFR rating a piece of cake.

>>20821447Damn, I spent 10k on mine and it was only that much because I did it at a university's part 141 school. Would have been cheaper at a local part 61. Gear can be had cheap, I bought a used headset for $50 on ebay, kneeboard and misc flight bed items totalled out to about $100 buying mostly used stuff. Even got a handheld radio in my bag for like $200. Had a restriction, not valid for daytime flight by color signal control, so it made sense to have the handheld.

Do I like them? Eh, they’re cool pieces of machinery. I just wrench on them though. Started with B-52H, then C-17A, C-5A/M, some KC-10A, briefly Gulfstream G500, and now FA-18C/D. Won’t ever get to fly any of them but wrenching on them pays good, especially as a civilian now

My grandpa was in the Royal Indian Airforce, he trained in Hawker Hurricanes, flew Spitfires in the second world war, and after independence flew a Dassault Mystere 4 for a little bit before being one of the fist pilots to fly a MiG 21 in the countryThey still use that shit to this day which is why he called them the Indian Air Farce a few months ago

I only fly them in the level D sims now, still tons of break downs because the avionics are from the real plane.My opinion on the EPIC system beyond reliability mostly comes from comparing flying Embraers to Boeing and Airbus. Their FMS system is so convoluted compared to either Airbus' or Boeing's usual data entry flow. Hell even a CRJ is similar to those. For example to do a CAT III autoland in say a 757 or an A320/A330 is a piece of cake. For the later you just make sure your approach, baro setting, temp, and DA are set. ATC could teach a child how to autoland one in an emergency. 170 requires about 20 different inputs be set to do the same and it won't even land on full flaps. For such an advanced aircraft, it seems they made it more complicated and annoying than it needed to be. Only system worse has to be the UNS on the 145 and similar aircraft.
I got my PPL + multi-engine a few years ago but it was kind of a waste because I'm too autismo to be a commercial pilot and I can't afford to fly without my parents financial help, so I became an aircraft mechanic instead.That being said, if I survived the apocalypse and lived in a world free of rules and regulations, I would totally take up being a pilot again.
Y'know, I'd love to be a pilot, but fuck me it is expensive beyond imagination. $150,000 Ausbucks for a cadetship with an airline here, and that's probably the best way of getting into aviation. $150,000 for a degree in aviation with associated training, and that doesn't guarantee a job at the end. Orrrrrrrrr, you could go military, be stuck with them for 10 years on a training bond, and then come out the other side in the same position as an airline cadet that's just started in the job itself.
