Moving to Cheyanne Wyoming next month, I am looking at selling my 2011 Corolla for a rav4 with awd. Obviously doesn't have to be the new one, a 2015 would be fine. I just keep getting told by family I need AWD out there.

Thoughts on the Rav4? Will I need awd in general?

CX5 is another option for me.
>>
>>20385617
Don't let /o/ meme you and say "you don't need AWD I drive a RWD $3000 dollar civic with chains and I drive 200 miles a day"

You're in a state that gets shit on for snow, ice and worst, AWD is great to have.

That's impressive, since they come fwd.

CX-5 turbo would probably be more invigorating to drive but you can't go wrong with a RAV4 if cheap to own and long lasting is your requirement, there's a reason they're one of the most common crossovers on the road. Just don't stray too far from the pavement or well packed dirt roads, looks can be deceiving as it barely has more ground clearance than a Corolla.
>>
>>20385850
>barely has more ground clearance than a Corolla.
It has 8.6 inches now, which is more than a 1500 silverado.
>>
>>20385952
Im seeing 8.9" for a 4wd silverado
>>
>>20385968
Forgot to look into 4wd, you're correct. And 8.4 for non-premium trim rav4s. Which is still fine honestly. It'll do fine on light trails and shit, and more than enough for gravel roads.

I live in Wyoming and drive an Insight. The Corrola will just fine for driving around town. They close the interstates and highways when it's bad anyways. Just get a good set of winter tires, or studded tires, on steel wheels. My Honda does well enough on the low rolling resistance tires.

Abs, traction control, and knowing how to drive matter more than mALL Wheel drive.

I live in this frozen excuse for a state.

Wyoming plows and lays grit. All the major roads in Cheyenne will be plowed continuously. After 12 hours the side streets are hard pack snow. After November it barely goes above freezing. Any snow melt evaporates before turns to ice.

Are Americans really this terrible at snow driving? Closing highways? Needing Studded tires anywhere else but Alaska? Up here in leaf land I don't remember the last time any major road was closed due to snow and I've always made it thought winter easily with all season tires while having fun doing some skids.

you could sell your car and buy an AWD crossover like every other brainless NPC, or you could just buy a set of winter tyres for a fraction of the price.
>>

Latitude isn’t everything.

>>
>>20387054
You could be a brainlet npc who thinks you can only put winter tires on non-awd cars, you could be all season awd drifttaed, or you can be awd winter tire master race. Only one of the three though, since there is no other fourth option imaginable that likes cars at all.
>>
>>20387054
In my experience, there is no greater cuck than the fwd shitbox during winter. He has his winters on, yet still keeps to the right lane since he knows he can’t keep up with the awd cars once the light goes green.
>>
>>20387054
fwd is awful in bad conditions. And I don't care if you're from Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska, there will be a time early in the morning when the streets aren't plowed and you need to get somewhere. Whether it's the hospital, driving home from a girl's house, a party, staying late at work, picking your son up from a friend's house, whatever. And your fwd Honda will feel like garbage when you have to drive in even moderately hilly areas to get to your destination.

I live in Duluth, MN, it gets very cold and has tons of ice and snow for at least 6 months out of the year. I've got a 2018 Honda CRV LX with AWD (no oil dillution issues on that one with the 2.4).

Get the RAV4. I considered it with the Honda, they're both excellent cars and handle the snow well. I test drove both, and just liked the way the Honda drove better. That said, tires are the most important aspect. If not snow tires, at least make sure the all-weather tires are in good condition. I've also owned a 1995 MB C280 with RWD, that was hell in the snow.
>>
>>20387054
what is it with poorfags FWD faggots and their HURRR AWD IS FOR NPCS bs?
>>
>>20385852
Honestly I don't understand this opinion. Crossover vehicles have become mostly the default type for the average driver to buy. I think it's way more common for a former sedan owner to drive a crossover than a BOF SUV/truck owner to downgrade to a crossover. They're decent to drive, great MPG, and handle bad roads and light trails well. Very few are cross-shopping a Tahoe and CX5.
>>
>>20389157
You can get by reasonably well with FWD, but don't realize how much better AWD can be.
>>
>>20389196
/o/ is a board made up mostly of poorfags and zoomers who can't afford nice things. in order to feel better, they have to call anything that doesn't scream "shitbox" an "NPC" thing. This goes for a lot of things like AWD, extended cabs and CUVs. Anything that isn't lowest trim, 2wd, ex fleet and/or 10+ years old is "NPC"

>>20385617
Just keep the Corolla, unless you're just looking for a reason to buy another vehicle. I drive a geo metro here and the only time I can't get to where I need to go is if I-80 is actually closed. When the weather gets bad, the only thing that really matters is driver experience and skill. If you want to be like everyone else around here, get the Rav4, a Cherokee, a Forester/Outback, or a 2004-2005 3/4 ton truck.

if you lived in a place that routinely gets more than 15cm of snow overnight you'd understand
>>
>>20389487
You can still get by with fwd regardless. Plows exist for a reason.
>>
>>20389545
right, not like people can live in areas that MIGHT be plowed by early afternoon after a storm, or private roads, or backroads, or icy roads, or hilly areas, or areas that get icy etc etc etc

no matter how much you don't want it to be true, AWD will be superior to FWD or RWD on snow and ice, deal with it
>>
>>20389545
Plows don’t do alleys. Pushed some fwd cuck on winter Yokohamas out of a spot today since he high centered and while his rears were on pavement, it did him no good. Meanwhile my high factory ground clearance and all seasons got me down the same alley just fine bebcause awd truly is better.

Wyoming deals with constant 40 to 80 mph winds. The cities are also over 100 miles apart. Cell service doesn't exist in some places.

Semi trucks get blown over or off the roads constantly. If you get wrecked in the middle of no where. You're boned until a DoT plow or a state trooper finds you. So they close the interstates and highways. Usually after the first accident involving a semi. Giving the dot time to clear the wreck and snow. While keeping drivers in towns instead of on the road.

You’re thinking of cruising at a consistent speed while the torque converter is in lock up. Or you’re thinking of that Honda video before the firmware fix, in that same video a Ford escape makes it up. 99.95% all wheel drive cars are all wheel drive on acceleration. The .05 is CR-Vs that never got taken back to the dealer

The wind definitely gets on my nerves, that's for sure, but I love everything else about this place. I love the wide open spaces and the lack of people, and the poor cell service is nice because then you can break down in the middle of nowhere and ask a rancher for help. Then you spend the next 4 hours talking about how life used to be like 40 years ago while waiting for your buddy to come help you. It's great for /o/ activities too because it has plenty of mountain passes to chose from.

If you like the outdoors it's great due to the huge unpopulated stretches of land, and the scenery is amazing. I get to look at a range of snow-capped mountains on my way to get groceries. There's a little bit of every land type here, or almost. We have the mountains, rolling hills, some plains, even a desert and dunes, but I'm not sure about swamps. There are even herds of wild horses out in the Red Desert.

The weather really sucks though. Summer is pretty good and the wind usually isn't too bad during the summer, but the winters are terrible. There's always at least a 20 mph wind which makes it feel much colder and driving on the highways gets a little annoying with a 60 mph crosswind. Then if you're going to work, you have to bring equipment for how the weather is now and you also must think ahead to how the weather might be in 9 hours because it likes to change drastically and frequently. If you can put up with that it's great. Also everyone loves guns, even the most dyed-hair liberal looking person has at least one gun.
>>
>>20390287

I don't care much for Cheyenne. There's some strange people there and it always smells like ass due the refinery, but at least it isn't Sinclair, that place looks like Bartertown. There isn't much scenery by Cheyenne except for some mountains way out in the distance to the west and southwest, but it's only a 30 minute drive to Curt Gowdy park and some other cool hiking and climbing spots. If you end up on the Laramie side of the mountains it's a lot more scenic. This pic is at a spot between Laramie and Cheyenne just off I-80 and I'm looking south. Those mountains are off in Colorado and while there's snow on the ground in the pic, those mountains stay snowy all year.

Well hey there OP, unlike this thread, I actually currently live in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Here's a fun tip that people don't tell you, they only plow like 5 major roads here. Even after it stops snowing the city just says fuck it and let's the snow sit. So yes, get something with AWD. I currently drive a fwd and it still kind of sucks. Get that rav4. You don't need ground clearance in snow

Drive through it? And while I only lived in Cheyenne for 3 years, I went to work at 5:30 for two of those years and I never had an issue getting there while the roads still sucked. If you want to go out and get another vehicle then go ahead, but I'm just saying that fwd was good enough for me.
>>

I'm the guy you replied to earlier. Fwd is working alright for me as well, but this guy has the money to get an AWD car and is moving to a city that barely plows roads, I say go for it. I'd be driving a WRX right now if I could afford one. Awd is just nicer in snow

You will never once give a shit about AWD in even the snowiest of US states, and it'll be completely useless and for mall crawling sissies that can't drive. That is, until that one day you're stuck on a snowbank or can't pull out of your driveway because there's a dip in the road with a full foot of snow piled up, and your neighbor is pulling out of his driveway in a fucking toyota.

Or that time you're stuck in the road or in a parking lot, and you see that fucking toyota pull out and make its way with ease. AWD is (mostly) a meme. It's necessary for emergencies though, which WY will have plenty of. And even if you don't utilize it more than once every couple years, that one time you pull out of a spot that you'd otherwise be trapped in an comfortably scoot your ass home will make it seem worth every fucking penny.
