Do I avoid salvaged titled when buying a car?Found a 05 civic for 1800 with a salvaged title, but the owner says it’s perfectly fine. He doesn’t know what happened for the salvaged title
>>20377618E36 320i/328i coupe or e46 320ci(170hp)I really like the interior/exterior looks on the e46, but I feel like it will be maybe less reliable?
>>20377628He knows full well why it's salvaged.Unless you can get under the thing and see that any repairs have been done properly, then consider it. Otherwise yeh, typically turn your head away from most salvage jobs.
>>20377628>>20377656This. In my state i would have to have the vehicle seperately inspected by state troopers, before i could register it, then i could have it inspected for safety+emissions. At the very least have the car looked over thoroughly by your own mechanic.

what is the difference between a m235i and a M2? Is the m235i close to the M2 or not even

What car is the ideal for someone who is looking for something that is very small, that is 100% eco friendly and does not contaminate, that has a friendly appearance and Nothing Rude and that very easy to drive.
>>20378341>100% eco friendly and does not contaminateget some roller skates hippie
>>20377861M235i doesn't have an LSD, has less sporty suspension ( the M2 actually has a versions of the M4's subframes), and while they have the same engine, is detuned by 30hp. https://www.bmwblog.com/2016/04/11/technical-comparison-bmw-m2-vs-m235i/It would've taken you like 10 seconds to google this.

Why does my car accelerates faster some times but feels sluggish at other times? This is with similar weather and road conditions. 2000 Toyota Avalon btw
>>20379195Is the air temperature different? An engine will make more power when it's cold out simply because cold air is more dense.
I want to know if I'm a shit driver or my car has a problemWhenever I downshift to stop at a light or something, (usually from fourth to third, but happened in thrid too) the car just dies. I step in the clutch, the rpms drop really fast and it just dies. I had a friend help me on some work since he knows more, and he said the clutch is 'long'.Could it be that I'm not fully stepping on the clutch?
>>20379170I think it's a factory option for an LSD
East Coast. Is a 100k+ miles Toyobaru worth buying? If so how much would stock in good condition from 2012 be worth?
Should I get a m2 or a used 911?M2:+ cheaper in general+ more space + easier for kids ( I have one)- leads reliable- might not age very well ( depreciation, style)911+ cooler / better brand+ will age better + better race car - expensive - lack of space- small backseat for kids
>>20379306Depends on the mr2 in question
>>20379225Don't think so, like I said this is in similar weather conditions

I'm confused, (and new to manuals), this Miata was advertised as a 6 speed. Does that mean transmissions with 6 forward gears and one reverse are 7 speeds?
>>20379812>Any other suggestions?Used Ford Mustang Shelby GT350Thing has a 5.2L V8 (That Ford called the Voodoo) with a flat plane crankshaft, like a Ferrari. >>20379139Might have more to do with the new master cylinder, some of them are adjustable though.
>>20379901Not sure where you're finding that. MX5 was always advertised as a 5 speed.
>>20379195From a dead stop? or at different speeds? If the car in a higher gear its going to feel sluggish because that's how gears work.
>>20379243It shouldn't be doing that, typically that's a sign of a bad throttle position sensor, or other intake sensor.
>>20379771You can get used cars for 10k that have 300hp, that's like a low bar for performance these days.

Fampais, if I buy a 15 year old shitbox, how much maintenance can I realistically do with some car jacks, hand tools and some patience? Can I cover most of it?I have wrenched quite a bit on motorcycles so I probably have most of the tools I need, but cars would be new to me.
>>20380187You can do a lot with handtools, carjacks and jackstands. I higly recommend at least an impact wrench+sockets. You're bound to need it for one thing or another and will make like fucktons easier.

are all bmws unreliable shithouse meme cars?all my mates that have owned other German cars have had bad times with them, usually transmission related.I’m looking at a 2007 335i
>>20381199Early 90's 2wd Tacoma/Yota Pick or Nissan hard body. 4wd versions will be out of your price range.
>>20381202If they bought autos, its their own dumbass fault. ZF makes a nice transmission but their autos are short lived. The getrag manuals are much more stout. The problem with BMW's of that era is their cooling systems, wastegates and fuel pumps
>>20381211Due to availability it probably will be an auto 335i I’m looking at.So I need to make sure the owner of the vehicle had constant atf fluid changes on the vehicle? Or is it simply just a short lived transmission and there’s nothing you can do about it?The reason I’m looking into it is specifically because it is automatic and I’ve never been down this road beforeI was planning on replacing bits anyway so the shortcomings from bmw are things I am interested in, so thanks for the info about bmws from the era
>>20381226>So I need to make sure the owner of the vehicle had constant atf fluid changes on the vehicle? Or is it simply just a short lived transmission and there’s nothing you can do about it?The units are sold as having 'lifetime fluid' in them as in there should never be any reason to change the fluid, even though logic dictates otherwise. So the PO probably has not changed it, and to my understanding some versions are sealed units making it difficult to change even if he wanted to do so.
Are there any wheel spacers that adapt 5x114.3 to 5x100 that won't kill me after 10,000km?
>>20381264American cars are just as guilty, they're doing the same shit now, you know what chrysler uses in their Chargers and Challengers? ZF. Ford's newer units are do the same thing.
>>20381253Fuck that’s dumbI’m gonna have to wait until I find a manual in the price range that’s reasonable for a turbo inline 6 in my country
>>20381270If you're not driving like an ass spacers will work fine. I'd be wary of track use though.
>>20381278Wasnt a jab at bwm specifically, more of a general wtfFuckin hell. I swear there is a conspiracy/collusion with auto makers to put out bad transmissions in all their models. So its almost guaranteed $ down the road when they need to be fixed.Btw amyone know if all cvt's have problems or just nissans? I seen a few hondas with cvts when buying my last car, noped out of that shit once i saw "cvt"
>>20381286I do hillclimb events. The reason why I'm asking is that there is a really nice clean set of 3 piece work equipes in my area with Nitto NT01 tires for cheap issue is they are both slightly too wide for my wheel gap and the wrong stud pattern.

I did the head gasket work myself and it was my first "big" job so while I have confidence in my work my inexperience may have led me to make a mistake.
>>20381377Think you might be paranoid. So long as the head and deck were flat an you torqued in sequence to spec yo're probably fine. Fix other leaks to take them out of the equation
I drove up to work this morning and eveything was hunky dory then I went to start my car and had no heat then a brief coolant loss message then total lossdumped some in kept going since a mile up was a gas station and being stuck on the highway is no beunohuge hole in my coolant reservoir, like fit my finger into it big.How the fuck would that happen?
>>20381787A shit load of hot cold cycles and plastics, even worse if your system has no cold fill and is pressurized. BMW's of the late 90's era had this problem, with reservoirs bursting becuase the aforementioned problems + the fact that some models ran high temps anyways putting further strain on the system.

I live in rural Wisconsin get hella snow. I have an 01 honda crv awd 5 speed and a Triumph speed triple. I want to replace my reliable but rusting CRV for a manual vehicle with good ground clearance. I thought the Subaru Crosstrek was 100% the answer until I learned about the oil consumption issue. What should I start trying to find? Under 15k, fun to drive (slow car fast is ok) and has good ground clearance and safety because I'm old now.
Probably a dumb question. Car's manual says 3.6L of oilWill adding only 3.5L have any kind of negative effects?
>>20381201I took a hammer to it with a 1 inch socket over it and got it out
>>20382162Running less is generally better than more but just got buy a $2 measuring cup and measure out .6 and use it for your auto fluids
>>20382205Nice, now just clean up the seating surface and inside of the knuckle where the new balljoint will go. Adding a little bit of lube to the bj and mating surface will help. Installing is where that ball joint press kit with an impact makes it a bunch easier. Good luck dude
>>20382162I don't see the issue. When you're doing a change they're usually a bit of oil left through the pipes and other bits. So 3.5L + that would get you close enough to 3.6L.
Has anyone used Amayama and gotten counterfeit parts or outright scammed? Need to make a big parts order and it's $585 on Amayama vs $705 for a dealership in the USA

I'm going to get myself track day wheels with some R1Rs on them, but i'm kinda poor. So, i want to buy steelies instead of alloys. I could probably buy cheap used alloys for similar price, but steelies are just so widely available and honestly i can't think of any reason not to do that. Is there any reason? Are steelies worse than alloys for track in any way? Could my brakes overheat?
>>20382776Steelies of the same size weight more
>>20382776As other anon they weight more and could affect your coolingJust get 2nd hand OEM alloys they shouldnt be that expensive
If anybody has an Impreza or WRX, could you advise me how well they function in snow and ice? We have a big hill under my house that all the FWD and RWD cars get stuck on during the winter. I'm wanting a WRX, but it needs to be able to get up that damn hill.
I'm giving my old car to my sister's kid because it seems like a better use than the $500 I'd be lucky to sell it for. Only problem is the kid is like 5 foot nothing and with the seat all the way forward still has to slump down to push the pedals all the way. I would just drill new holes to move the seat bracket up but the front ones sit on the slope of the floor pan where it dips down to make it deeper. How can I scoot the seat up a few inches while still keeping the seat safe and secured to the body? It's a z31 with power seat btw.
A week ago the outside temps were -10C (14F), so I made sure my tires were to factory spec at 2.6bar(37psi) all around, and I did it before driving and heating up the tire. Now the weather has suddenly changed and it's about +10C(50F). I went to check my tires and they were at 2.75bar(40psi).Im asking if cold pressure is always the standard and I should pump or deflate my tires regardless of temp. If it gets really cold should I pump the tyre past 2.6 pre driving?
Lads I need help deciding between an e92 m3 and a m4. M4 feels lighter and much much faster, but it feels like a barge due to it's size compared to the e92. Steering and sound was a lot better and the ride was much more comfortable without being silly on the e92.The e92 I've been looking at is a zcp DCT and the m4 is just a regular DCT one. Probably would track it once just for driver instruction and occasional zip on the mountains, but that's about it.All in all price difference is practically negligible as they're within 8 grand of each other.
>>20383350Take out seats, cut/take off railsWeld more rail to the back end for stability, move it forward, drill new mounting holes.Alternatively just let the kid grow.

How much does wheel weight matter?I was considering going from my stock 14" miata wheels to 15x7 Enkei RPF1s and getting some nice summer performance tires so I can get more gripShould I just get a $200 set of 13 pound 15x7 NB wheels and get nice tires for those or is the 9.6lb weight of the enkeis worth it performance-wise?
>>20383365Cold pressures are meant for ambient temperature, and should be adjusted as such.0.15bar isn't a huge change so you may even skip the autism of changing pressures every time the ambient temperature jumps up 10°C, but yeah, as soon as temperatures start to be higher all the time, you might want to adjust your cold pressures.
>>20383862Absolutely go the enkeis. Also consider buddy club. You will get more grip by virtue of it not being a 185 tyre any more, but the unsprung weight reduction will help a lot as well. Most important part of the car to lose weight.
>>20383887Okay, that'd essentially double my cost but that's acceptable if it makes a huge difference.Does unsprung weight reduction change the feel of the manual steering rack?
>>20377618So im poorfag with 3-4k budget and looking for a decent set of wheels that wont break down every month. Ive been looking at a buick regal (1999), mercury cougar, crown vic, and an older s40/s60. Any suggestions?
>>20383929for $3-4k you could certainly do better.Any reliable Japanese commuterbox made in the last 12ish years should do you fine.
Everyone here says not to get a nissan because of the transmission, but the stick has nissans recommended under sedans.Would it be fine to get a 07 sentra? Sis needs a car, see one for sale at $2k but 250k miles.
>>20383991>250k miles>$2kNot unless you can haggle them down a lot and are comfortable doing some serious work on the car when something inevitably breaks.
>>20383991That sticky is pretty old at this point. The Nissan CVT transmissions are what you want to avoid. That one is probably a regular auto, I think the CVTs just started coming out in '08. Nissan is still crap though and 250k miles is about as long as any auto trans will last. I would keep looking. Toyota and Honda are generally a better bet.
>>20383862Reducing wheel weight on a low powered car is probably the single biggest improvement you can make. You brake, accelerate and corner better. Do it. Don't know how it affects the steering feel.
>>20383991Sticky is years old at this point and needs some serious updating. It's like 5 years old at this point.Just get her a manual transmission Civic or Mazda 3.
>>20383118Huh? If a WRX with good tires can't do it you need a snowmobile not a car.

How are the Suzuki Jimny 1.3L and Vitara/Geo Tracker 1.6Ls in terms of reliability and longevity? Are they one of the types of engiens that tend to just last forever?I've found a few Vitaras for relatively cheap (between 3-4k AUD) but they've got odometres ranging from 200k to 260k, and Jimnys are expensive as fuck unless you buy one with close to 300k km on it.
I run conventional 10w-30 oil in my mr2. It has leaks coming from the crank and cam shaft seals. Should I try a high mileage oil to swell the seals and slow the leak a bit? Leak is not a big deal just a little annoying.
>>20387395If you have the tools and the knowledge to set your timing properly (and the time to do so), it's cheaper to just replace the seals instead of buying a different oil that may or may not fix the problem
>>20387164They are expensive because they last forever. Besides if you blow a motor that 1.3 and 1.6 was in heaps of barinas and swifts etc that can be had from a wreckers for like 80 bucks.
>>20387395A 10w40 would be fine to try. Not gonna do much though, just fix it

/o/, I present to you my odd mechanical troubles. My '95 E36 318i has problems starting but only after a few factors align. It has to stay cold for a few hours, parked on a flat surface and parked only minutes after going a steep downhill. If parked overnight outside facing nose down, it starts fine.If is stays cold for a week, it starts fine.If it goes downhill, is then parked on a flat surface and still warm, it starts fine.Currently I only face the dreaded combination parking at work, three stories below ground. The batteries is new, the relays have been checked, the oil filter is new, no irregularities with the oil pump but I can't tell tell if it is any of the sensors or valves. The car still starts, but it takes a few seconds longer in that one garage. There's one more thing that I can't test and I doubt it has any effect and that's the fact that I have to park right in front of a ventilation shaft that keeps blowing on the car while its parked.
So I had a thermostat go bad in my Toyota from age. It's a 35 dollar part, yet the mechanic wanted about 350 to swap it out. Already did it myself but is there some kind of law stating that mechanics have to try to Jew people out on labor or is this just them being shitty?
>>20388176test the starter solenoid if possible. The starter itself might be fine, but if the solenoid dies or is dying, you'll need to replace it anyways.
>>20388198I work in the industry and yes, basically. If I cant even get the dealership I work for to do the job right at a fair price, what hope do normies have. Hence I work on my own cars. What fucking coolant do i put in my shitbox? I just want to top it off by like 500ml because it is just below the min mark. It's a 2007 mazda 3 and everywhere i read it says that it takes either FL22 or doesn't and that if it takes FL22 it will be inscribed on the reservoir cap. Mine does not have that inscription and there is yellowish coolant in the reservoir but it could be orange too i cannot tell or know how big the difference between the two colours are in terms of coolant colour. I have some green coolant laying around but apparently mixing it with orange or yellow is bad?
>>20384411I have a first gen 3 and i fucking love the standard headunit, it is straight kino. That disgusting touchscreen infotainment shit is cancer. In fact i love just about everything about the mazda 3 interior.
>>20388541For that little amount you can just put water in there without problems. If it's a steady leak and you need to top up half a liter every other day, then definitely use just water because it's all going to leak anyway until you fix the problem. It's a very small amount, your car has at least 6+ liters of antifreeze so if you just use water it's not going to change much at all
>>20388541Unless your coolant is like ten years old, the prestone i see any more says any car, any coolant on the bottle now and I have a suspicion that that whole thing was bullcrap to begin with. Don't just put water. water vaporizes at normal engine temps.
What is this? I need to replace mine but i legitimately don't know what to search to find a new part.
>>20388176I shall guess that fuel pump has lost its pickup screen or stand pipe or you have other issues related to priming and fuel pressure. Getting downhill will provide better gravity pressure and a stagnant system will have better vapor pressure. It is a weird one for sure.
My beloved and trustworthy uncle (I say this unironically) is offering his 2007 328xi automatic for 6000 bucks with 90k miles on it. This would be my first car, he's had Koni shocks and OZ wheels put on it. It's in great condition, he takes care of his cars well, he races. I've heard the main issues are the plastic pump and oil leaks, that shit has to constantly be changed on time. Are there any other known problems?

Having two different types of oil in the engine is probably bad, right? My dad insisted on topping off my oil when we fixed something unrelated. He poured in some 10w40 oil. The motor takes 5w20 and was mostly full of the latter oil. Is it ok to have two different oils in there or should I drain and refill with the optimum oil?
>>20389544Don't be stupid, you'll never be able to afford a Tesla.

>>20389831A lower center of gravity helps, but mass is mass, the heavier something is, the more the tires have to strain against lateral forces in a turn, you can't over come basic physics anon.

>>20377628If he didn't own the car when it was branded as 'salvaged' then he might not know why it was salvaged. Try doing a carfax to find out, but it was most likely due to a collision. It doesn't take much damage to write off an older smaller car. Could get lucky and it was just some hail dents. Either way, have your mechanic check it out and make sure your insurance company will insure it.
>>20389998ah right, so the same as on a mower? do you know how these ones works? It spins left or right until it gets tight, and turning it left it eventually pulls out a little bit, is left opening the choke?
>>20379195Any dash indicators on? Last tune up when? How many miles?
>>20390026Turn to unlock, pull to activate. Start engine. After a couple seconds, when the engine runs smoothly, push the choke back and lock it. If you forget to push it back, the engine will eventually drown.
>>20390026The only cars with chokes are cars with carburetors. If yours has fuel injection, like 99% of cars, then that knob is for something else.
Can someone explain wheel sizes to me?For example, what does the "5x100 +45" mean in 18x8 5x100 +45?
>>20389398So i can mount my hub cab without it? The center piece is what the center piece of the hub cab mounts to iirc, doesn't just sit in the middle (thanks buick)

>>20390003I guess I'm more curious about the odd shape of it
>>20390142Oh okay.Thanks anon.
>>20390162Well I'm not an expert but an educated guess would be that the dip in the middle is to keep oncoming drivers from being blinded, and the rest is so your peripheral vision isn't in the dark.
>>20390176yea. 5x100 is the bolt pattern There's a bunch of bolt patterns automakers use. Some of the common ones are 4x100, 5x114.3, 5x115, 5x120, 5x100

What speed rating should I get for my winter tires? Technically, I should get h, since my car is faster than 190 m/ph. But isn't T enough? They are cheaper and since I'm not crazy, I won't drive faster than 190 in winter, anyway. Are there grip differences between t and h ratings for the same tyre?
>>20389562Specs are more important than viscosity.Even the owners manual of most cars say it's fine to mix different viscosities as long as it's just a minor top up and not a mega dump of half the capacity of the engine.Make sure the oil you used for topping up has the same specs (or close enough) as the one already in the sump. General specs are labeled as ACEA followed by one letter and a number, ILSAC followed by two letters and a number, or API followed by two letters. There are also many proprietary specs made by various car manufacturers that exceed standard specs or represent a middle ground between two standards, you can find what spec your engine needs in your user manual. Many oils are sold with labels that list pretty much all the specs (both standard and proprietary) they fit into, so you should have no problems finding the right one or identifying the one you used.I wouldn't lose too much sleep over a very minor refill, but if you had to top up a considerable amount of oil, I would consider draining and refilling with the correct spec and viscosity
>>20390285Faster rated tires also wear faster and offer no benefits if you don't actually drive that fast.
>>20390013Volume control? Cruise control adjustment? Dimmer for the dash lights?

So instead of clutch kicking while pulling the handbrake and turning the steering wheel, you integrate the handbrake pull w/ the clutch kick so you can have two hands on the wheel. It's a drifting thing obvObviously you can still clutch and shift like normal, you just can't be drunk and push the clutch to the floor every time.
>>20391032As far as using craigslist mevhanics, i never have, so i cant say yay or nay especially because my experience doesmt mean it would be the same as yours. If its the most logical and economical for you, it might be worth a shot.

Why does driving 100 mph for 30 minutes burn more fuel than driving 50 mph for 1 hour?
>>20391088your RPMs are higher when going at 100mph then 50mph (usually). But since you're in a higher gear at 100mph you are getting more miles per gallon. You use more fuel but you are more efficient with it due to higher gearing.
Can someone explain the purpose of these exhausts and why they tore off the rear bumper to install them? It's on an RX-8 nearby.
>>20390052I don't think it would be for starting since it's fuel injected, but just controls the fuel/air mixture overall because it doesnt have any electronic system that does it automatically.>>20390071Yeah it's fuel injected, surprisingly, the thing doesnt even have an OBD2 port. I looked it up and for fuel injected vehicles it just controls the fuel / air mixture. Moving the choke also seems to move the accelerator slightly in and out.
