Posting it here again, also first

Hello friendos
I just subscribed to iRacing for 3 months to check out if it's any good or not.
I am having fun at the moment with the mx5 races, although I can say they might become boring in the future. Currently I am at class D. Not really interested in ovals or dirt events for the time being

Can you seasoned veterans give me any tips and maybe answer some questions? Also, what do you guys think about the game?

I want to progress to road cars, mainly gt3 and some lmp2s or lmps if I ever git gud enough - should I keep on doing the mx5 races?

At which license level do you get more variety with the road events?

What are some essential (I.e. relevant) car classes that I should buy cars for? (E.g. 1 gt3 car, 1 lmp car)

I practiced for like 2 hours before the actual race. I didn't do the first race and saw that the top person did 17 laps, so I went with 19 just to be "safe", and even that was one lap short.
I'm going with double the amount next time, this fucked me over twice already and I will fucking scream if it happens again.

did you know you can adjust those mirrors in rf2? when you do that, all that's left is how mirrors are static "cameras" and not moving along with your head movement (which is pretty bad, but i guess it's acceptable). i was mostly annoyed about lack of interior mirror, i was running btcc without virtual mirrors if i remember correctly

iracing and lfs both have great vr mirrors

But the pace car was going an almost constant 50mph, which is slower than your usual midday traffic on a highway. It's just people who have obviously never been in a real car before riding the bumper of the guy in front of them rather than leaving a 3 or so car gap like you would in real life. You're actually worse off riding the guys ass as the race is about to go green anyway because if you get a jump on him you'll do nothing but run into him.

Consoles should be reverse compatible and upgradable, rather than having to drop cash each time a new game version rolls out. If I have to buy a new console to run a new game version, go through wheel compatibility issues, all that while watching my investment in a 1 year old system rott as obsolete, I’m out .
Bad business Sony.

Make the games more expensive but don’t force everyone to purchase a console because you no longer support the older models. This business model is not new, Microsoft has been using this approach for years.

Consider that a race has no rules in regards to obligatiry pit stops. Do you go the entire race without stopping, or do you stop, and if so, when? In the middle of the race, or near the end? What's your preferred strategy?
I'll go for a hour long vintage cars race soon, and i always play safe "stop in the middle, 2 stints", but i reckon i could get better results out of some other strategy. Which one, i'm not sure about.
>>
>>20378301
Depends on a variety of factors.
>How long can you run with a full tank?
>What tire compounds are available?
>How long until the tire's performance drops off?
>How big is the lap time impact from the tire's performance drop?
>How long does a pitstop take?
>Is changing weather a factor?
Just to name a few examples

Assuming that a full tank or single set of tires won't be enough for the full distance, I'd start by figuring out how long each tire takes to wear to a level where it becomes significantly slower than at the start or uncontrollable. Pick the one that has the best compromise of lap time to wear time and then figure out how much fuel you could add in a pitstop so that it finishes filling up just when the tire change is done
>>
>>20378326
The tire can last 3/4 of the race, since there's only one compound available, but mistakes could throw this strategy under the bus. Also, the extra weight can really hurt the car's performance if i run it with that much fuel. But fuelling up based on the time it takes to change tires is a good idea, one i've seen used in races all the time but never thought of doing it
>>
>>20378366
>But fuelling up based on the time it takes to change tires is a good idea
only if you can refuel and change tires simultaneously, which isn't always the case
>>
>>20378372
Surely, but we can do it in this series, so i'll probably do it

Why do racing games stray away from any kind of visual and technical damage?
I mean, big crashes where wheels fly, bodywork is crunched and people get hurt is part of racing, but I haven't seen one simulator that tries to simulate this. The best I see is the paint gets a texture where it looks like the metal underneath is crunched up and maybe some wheels will fly.
GRID had a fantastic damage model, and that's not a simulation.

1. Licensing restrictions: legal suits still get their panties in a wad at the idea of having to explain to a customer "no the car doesn't actually do what it does in a video game, there are airbags and seat belts we promise." The warnings that the cars don't behave realistically in regards to safety and crash performance are often shown before the game even starts.

2. Fidelity: Damage modelling is tricky. Unless you run a soft body simulation like BNG, "damage" is just detecting when two bodies collide and assigning them less hit points for the damageable portions than they had before, while maybe deforming the car model a bit. It doesn't make for much accuracy, especially in a multiplayer race where a players reported position can change illogically. iRacing has some great bugs were in some collisions your car will be damaged by cars that never touch it or damaged on the opposite side.

3. Graphics: Gran Turismo 2 originally had a working visual damage model but it was cut primarily because it just didn't look good when the cars got all banged up. Considering lots of PSX owners probably wallrode with the Escudo to get races won, I don't blame them. TOCA:WTC on the same console had a great visual damage model and frankly superior graphics to GT2, but it's a touring car game with simpler physics and if it didn't have detachable bumpers and dentable doors there'dve been riots.

Some games don't need it, Gran Turismo is frankly better without any kind of damage modelling. It's a perfect automotive fantasy land. Forza makes more sense because it postures as a harder-edged "motorsport" simulator, and even there's it's really limited so that you can beat the shit out of the car and still enjoy driving it. With an actual racing sim though, damage modelling is an essential part of the experience, despite the claims of those who seem to think real racers never crash. Shit happens, so you must simulate the shit or else your game is wrong.
>>
>>20378530
LFS has this, including the real cars
>>
>>20377552
you don't color the alpha channel you dingus, the color of the headlight lenses is the diffuse texture, the one that is normally colored and visible on the car.
However it is possible they are on the template but the UV wrap doesn't actually map to that file. The Corvette's grille is this way, which is why everyone's still got Callaway chicken wire on their noses.
>>
>>20378638
LFS's damage modelling is more based on wadded-up paper than cars, also it's extremely limited, you can't crush the cabin at all and pushing the car in too much one way will push it out elsewhere, kinda like a bag of sand. It's perfect for racing fender benders, not big crashes.

My point being that these people go to greath lenghts to make you feel like you're actually driving a racing car on a real track, but the moment you crash it takes you out because you just hit a wall at 260km/h and your body work is a little dented, and you maybe lost a wheel or two and that's it. Completely takes you out of it.

usually when people crash at 260 kmh+ they fucking die almost regardless of the car or track
simulating a car coming apart at high speed requires an entirely different physics engine and understanding of materials than the one used to make it roll down the road and that isn't the focus of the game.

also xpand rally had driver death.

what's honestly more important than the damage modelling is the way collisions are handled, so that the way cars rebound off the geometry and each other makes physical sense and can be more easily and logically avoided by other drivers, Strange visual telegraphing like what AC's netcode produces destroys immersion and makes it more difficult to stay out of wrecks that are occurring around you.

the artifacts introduced from recording, deinterlacing and converting to webm don't help, and the video is kinda long as I wanted it to loop the attract mode. On a real TV the interlacing noise and compression artifacts aren't there.
The primary benefit in Virtua Racing 32X is that the dithered false-transparent shadows and smoke are not obvious grids of pixels, but you can also clearly see the dot crawl and ghosting that is present in the output. That I don't mind at all, it's there on a real 32X.

>ffmpeg -resolution 320x240 -video bitrate fucking 400kbps
>google for magic tricks, build a script with two pass encoding and whatnot
>colors are sometimes disappearing
>give up

Got the g25 off a mate but clutch pedal won't work ffs
Any g25 bros got a easy fix? Gonna rip apart the pedal box and mod it anyway
>>
>>20382768
is it detected as a G25 properly and not as a DF or something else?
>>
>>20382768
how is it "not working"? is it not responding at all if you press it and check readings in wheel settings window? it's pretty easy to troubleshoot really
>everything from clutch pedal to wheel base is a potentiometer + piece of cable
>if it's reading stuff but readings are messy, clean up potentiometer or replace it
>if it's not reading anything at all, check the cable
>if cable is fine, it's either completely destroyed pot or something in a wheel base
>if it's in wheel base, you're probably fucked
>if not, either replace potentiometer or fix the cable/connection

if you have multimeter at home, you can check cable with a beep test thingie

wtf bros Forza horizon is actually fun
I think I'm gonna play this until VR stops being a meme. Sadly buying a wheel until then isn't worth the money with my 22" setup
>>
>>20382804
if you mean fh4, buying a wheel isn't worth the money if you want to play it.

Do my drivers earn more if I buy trailers for their trucks?
>>
>>20382768
>Any g25 bros got a easy fix?
Yeah. Grab the wheel, throw it in the trash and get a wheel from this decade. Preferably a thrustmaster.
>>
>>20383018
you truly are my greatest ally
>>
>>20383016
You cant buy trailers in ets2 dummy, but you knew that didnt you.
>>
Also it won't work as a 900 degree wheel in forza 7 or fh4
Do I need to lower the Max degrees in the control panel or something it only detects as a 180 degree
>>20383018
Lol faggot
Wheel itself is fine nice and smooth no clattering like the g920 g27 had and extremely easy to mod
>>
>>20383024
go launch the game then delete your post in shame dumbass
>>
>>20383029
you're retarded in several counts, but firstly because forza visual wheel rotation is 180 deg no matter what your physical rotation is
because playing forza with a wheel is retarded
>>
>i'm not buying a 144 Hz screen because my 60 Hz screen is nice and smooth
>i'm not bothered by the game running at 30 FPS instead of 60 because it's nice and smooth
>i'm not buying a more modern wheel because my logitech wheel is nice and smooth
Not blaming you I used to be a Logitech 60 Hz poorfag but then I saw the light
>>
>>20383016
No idea I fired all my drivers when I started playing ETS2MP a couple of years ago and the fast forward to server clock gave me 5 billion from the slaves.
It made saving nearly instantaneous from inexplicably taking 10+ seconds, which was crucial before they implemented background saving.

nah that's not always true if you live in the slums and can't afford a brand new wheel a G25 is still great to lag into other people online
>>
>fags can't into /wsg/
>>
>>20383034
That sucks
Oh well the fbb sucked anyway assetto corsa with mods is amazing
>>20383038
I'm gonna get a new screen when 4k 100hz + gets cheap
Downsampled 3k is fine for now my gpu is too shit to handle that
Gtx 1080 2700x
>>
Can't we all just be happy? O/o/h right it's 4chnl

Wait isn't it on several counts
If I was in several counts that doesn't make sense

i know DR2.0 won't be meme enough for people here to buy it as much as we bought original DR, but it would be cool to have some league races when the game goes out
>>
U nongs have a discord so I can have some mp with some fellow autists
>>20383084
I think I pirated it ages ago I'll go get it again
I had some rally mods for autismocorsea I'm trying to find
>>
>>20383078
and when you get that new screen you'll see how smoother it is
well basically going to a modern thrustmaster wheel is that same step
buy a good wheel
>>
>>20383093
no there's no discord /ovg/ does not support shitty chinese botnets
go on reddit they have some
>>
>>20383099
This wheel is fine I'm a poor fag and shit costs a fuck load in my country plus my daily is manual so it's nice to have a break with flappy paddles

>>
>>20383105
i'm just telling you, remember when you get that 144 hz screen how nice it feels that's how a good wheel feels

>>20383107
nope that was an ogc discord
>>
>>20383122
Bitch please my irl car has variable hydrological power steering and 265 front rear tyres I don't need that much of a op wheel
>>20383131
Oh absolutely but I'm just pissing around on this one turned the shifter into a handbrake rally drift freeroam etc
Not into hardcore sim blow hard muh wheel Betr than urs I mean ofc it is its more expensive
>>
>>20383146
>turned the shifter into a handbrake
neat
>>
>>20383107
Good thing we all gather every Saturday to race a completely FREE racing simulator called RICARDOFACTOR 2. AND WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT ALL THE DOWNLOAD LINKS FOR IT CAN BE FOUND ON THE WIKI!

Did I mention that it's FREE? Because it is.
>>
>>20383172
Yep just gonna bolt something to the top besides the stock knob
Always got the shits the newer g920 or whatever shifters couldn't do this
>>
>>20383361
yea it's funny they removed the one thing the logitech shifter is good at
>>
>>20378791
I'd prefer if they simulate damage to abuse (wheels, gearbox etc.) instead of collisions because most of them mean your race is over. Abuse threshold would be more useful because many times I aim to big bumps, knowing that suspensions and wheels are invulnerable, or shift way too early, because the gearbox is invulnerable, too. Those are serious shortcomings because I don't drive like I would in real life and it kills the point of simulating. I don't care much if I crash and a wheel came off instead of two or panels being bent or whatever.
>>
>>20383361
Uh actually the shaft on the shifter is a standard like...8 mm D-peg, it's compatible with real shift knobs, and the G29/G920 one is LITERALLY the exact same thing with a different case that has no buttons. You can actually attach a G27 shifter to a G29 and the buttons will mirror buttons that are on the wheel.

I was able to drop the shift knob off a '13 Dodge Dart directly on to the Driving Force shifter with zero modification. Anything else meant for a Dart, Giulietta, or other FCA euro shitbox should work too.
>>
>>20383394
Except endurance and rally, then it'd be useful to have accurate damages since mechanics have time to do some repairs.
>>
>>20383084
kurwa xD
>>
>>20383394
Breaking your car sucks.
Breaking your car because of a programming routine that decided you didn't shift right is infuriating. Without a full simulation of internal components, mechanical damage that makes physical sense is not possible.
>>
>>20383416
I think he's talking about the sequential toggle the 25 shifter had that was removed afterwards.
>>
>>20383439
ah yeah, the feature you can replicate with a couple of rubber bands
>>
>>20383439
you can drop that shifter on a G29/920 and in theory it should still work but I don't know for sure.
>>
>>20383450
Apparently the pedals are cross compatible too
