lovely bike
based and stvzopilled

the only thing i don't like is the inline barrel adjuster, not having it at the cablestop is a little unclean and man it's annoying that derailers don't have them any more

but it's a really really nice build though good job
the modern touches + retrodouche touches are perfectly balanced and don't clash at all

this is now my fastest bike
it's way lighter than the other one and has some potential to be upgraded (new bikes would literally be 5 to 10x the price i paid for this one on my area)
to do: get hood cover, replace the thumb shifter with an actual brifter, replace the saddle for something not so ugly, get a modern seatpost without that stone age one bolt thing, get new tires (first priority), cut the steerer (first to do)
when:god knows

It's a really common failure of steel frames in general. Especially if you're going to be abusing it off of curbs and jumps.

>>1343390
The frame was literally found in the trash, so. 3$ in paint for something that was nearly my ideal size at the time.

As opposed to searching around for a frameset that was in my budget at the time, had enough clearance, and that I wouldn't mind rolling the dropouts on.

Is this a good thread to post a general bike question? I dun goofed with a new inner tube for a 700c wheel. It burst almost immediately and for some reason, it ripped out the rim tape. I have old rim tape for a 26" wheel, so I stretched it and put that on my 700c wheel. Is there anything wrong with what I did?

Those pads are trash. It also looks like you have along pull front brake that is single pivot and not caliper style. So bad pads and your most important brake has the wrong leverage.

Frame is too big for me, but with saddle like this, my fit is great. I got short arms, this way I can still sit more sporty than a regular bike, but not as sporty as a full on racer. It's got to be 40 year old and still has mostly original parts.
>>

you could get a saddle with longer rail and scoot it all the way to the front while also being able to raise it a little closer to level with the handlebar. would look weird but a saddle bag would make it seem less off

Got my brother in law into bike riding 2 months ago, and after a couple of rides i entered us together in a local bike race.
To make it bearable for him, we did the short route and i went on this beautifull 1998 Peugeot Performance 5000 i have just inherited and restored from a family member. (Columbus steel and Shimano RSX 7 speed group).
I told him to expect getting dropped early, but I managed to break away from the pack and had him on my wheel for the rest of the ride. And wouldnt you know it, we ended up winning. (mind you with an average speed of only around 30km/h)
All in all, a really great experience for both of us on his first race.

Not happy with the decal placement. When I strip the frame and put new ones on bare metal it'll just be a single cannondale on the downtube and a headbadge. Also that is how the seatpost clamp is on much of the CAAD line. Drilled on the front, too.

Wow, had no idea. Cool.

I am mistaken. It's drilled on the back, but the factory seatpost clamp has a notch that fits into the gap. I could swap it out for a normal one or modify this one, I guess.

correct, it does work tho, i'm good at hacking stuff.
i got fooled by the seller, original fork was cracked and the bike was probably crashed and then somehow fixed, how they did it remains a mystery, i don't know how braze on works but it seems that they modified the angle of the downtube around the bb too.
TL;DR: it's shit but it works and i learnt how to fix bikes

Wow. Did not expect this many replys on an old Peugeot. A little more info on it. It was bought around 1998. It has sat in a warm garage without being ridden for those 20 years, and as a result nothing on the bike was worn! (Its even the original chain, showing no signs of wear!) The bartape was completely faded and had to be replaced along with the tyres which were horribly deformed.
The bike rides like really well, and apart from being a bit heavier it really doesnt hold me back.

your bike intrigues me so much
it is firstly a good looking bike, but the retro direct drive system takes the gold since there just a handful of people with them and you seem to have taken the more genuine route. do you actually find yourself using the benefit of the second gear? compared to a single speed of the same weight and build, would a retro direct drive bike like that excel and achieve higher average speed all around?

The handlebars are admittedly polarizing. Velo Orange Dajia Far. Braking from the hoods is acceptable. Braking from the drops is fucking incredible. One finger (with canti brake!) on all be the very steepest drops. The flat section in the drops allows for a firm grip without any hot spots on the front or back of the palm like you get on some more traditionally rounded drops, and the wide sweep encourages an elbows-out posture that allows more leverage on the bars. Feels like piloting a fuckin' speeder bike, especially in these redwood forests.
>>
>>1345614
>>1345623
I like a good monstercross build as much as anyone but this ain't it. The handlebars on that thing are doofy high by any standard. orange + camo is redneck cringe and bent thomson seatposts will never look good. fargos are fun but calling this "peak bike" and "best bike in the thread" is hilariously dumb.

(Also not to be too pedantic, but if you've got a very slopey top tube, suspension-corrected fork, and >>50mm tires, you're out of "monstercross" territory and into simply "mountain bike" territory, dorpbars or no.)

Didn't actually think about it, I've built this bike mostly for fun, and to try how all this pedaling backwards works. It certainly takes some practice to do it right, muscles work totally different than normally. I think riding a fixed gear before would help a lot, but I did it years ago and not for long, so it's not really my case. Also I feel like 170mm crank arms are a bit too long, but anyway I think it's overall better than a regular single speed. You can pedal backwards for quick start, at climbs or against wind, and normally when going faster. Some people set their drive the other way (smaller freewheel for pedaling backwards), but I think the classic way is better for beginners.

>>1346058
I'm not gonna dwell into how it works, just google "retro direct" and you'll find some good videos on that topic. It's pretty simple once you understand it. Also the wrench isn't just pressed between spokes, an o-ring keeps it in place pretty well, so it's not as suicidal as it looks like. I've put it in here because pedals tend to unscrew when pedaling backwards, I used a loctite on them, but I keep the key just in case.

The bike also comes with a banana box.

90s mtb with slicks isn't a poorfag road bike, it's a poorfag comfy touring bike

and the ride of a nice old chromoly frame with supple tyres, is far comfier than that of a 'flat bar road bike'. The other appeal is that for a commuter they're stable and load well and have eyelets, and relatively cheap for theft.

basically if you want something stiff and fast then you're probably interested in going fast and riding long distances and the ergonomics and aero of drop bars becomes very important.

And if you don't want to go fast or ride seriously long distances then you should get something comfier and not waste money on marginal preformance like tight spacing from a road group and not cuck yourself with 28mm tyres, fragile wheels, an overgeared drivetrain and a stiff frame.

Hi guys, it's been a while since the last time I've posted my bike.
I found a cheap rear derailleur for like 7 dollars and get the toilet paper tier one replaced for this nice 10 speeds SLX derailleur. It has been working fine, so, I'll probably keep it that way. I think it looks cool.
I also put on those fenders (yes, I fell for the meme) since rains season is approaching and I need to get prepared for it. I had to do some modifications since the space between the 35mm wheels and the brakes is basically inexistent. My brother and I went to a ride to make sure all the things were correct, and all appeared to be ok.
Pic is from today after making a deep cleaning, next picture will be in some nicer place and with some dirt on it.

I just got the bar-ends today, going to give it a feel.

Stems shifters are a downgrade if you got used to riding on the drops or hoods.
If brifters are out of your reach you can buy clamp-on downtube shifters (or even a cheap clamp thumb shifter) and slap it on the downtube (or on the tops of the bars as i've done with mine)

>Lower hope headset cup in a weird orientation
Its lined up to the front, there are 3 logos, evely spaced

>Heavy floating rotors on an XC bike
Floating rotors are lighter than full steel and more resistant to warp, also 180/160 is not a weird size

>mechanical brakes
>2x drivetrain
>No dropper or quick release
>Bar end shifters
All this is for durability and field-maintenability

This bike is for doing 000's of miles fully loaded on mixed surfaces (road, dualtrack, byway and single-track)

Anon, 23c tires are less efficient across surfaces that aren't perfectly smooth (like, glass-smooth) than 25c. The bumpier and rougher the surface, the more watts you spend bouncing yourself over the bumps rather than absorbing them into the tire.

As the another anon said, there are no many hills where I live. Also, the bike is intended to be only my commuter, that's why I have kept the same old road relation.
Another thing is that the hub is an old Campagnolo record, so, I can only look for 8 speeds freewheels and, for those parameters, the relation is only that small.

>>1346825
Since I'm not going to be braking while using them, I figured angling them to give me a certain feel and ability to throw my hands back up on the top of the bar to break might be easier. I have to test a couple positions to see what the best ideal for me is.

thanks man, its my mates tool chest. He owns his own bike/machine shop and we work for each other. The machinery the tools and the parts bin are a godsend

>nice serfas drifters. good tires
i love them and have been using them for over 15 years they last forever and i shred them. I run them ghetto tubeless but im thinking of getting some swchwalbe big apple next time.
> nobody rolls with those
yeah serfas distributors are bit weird and not many shops stock them

>how would you even go about that they're completely different colour metals
THIS 100% only a fucking idiot would think my bikes were Ti. They are totally different colour / sheen. I never said they were anything but polished aluminium in countless threads and even gave tips on how to do it and maintain the shine.

>retarded straya anon
OOOOFF
>he's just doing his own (absolutely stupid) thing.
My thing is i do not buy my bikes new. Hence i do not get to pick the colour. I much prefer the polished metal aesthetic to the shit paint job / colour that came with the frame. I like this new black look but it just screams ghetto / stolen so ill strip it soon. I have stripped and polished 6 of my bikes over the past 20 years and it is indeed my thing. its looks a lot better in real life when you have the dynamics of the light bouncing off it.

I dont get the hate or why people are triggered by it....

Downtube and cross-tubes both broken, right?
Undoubtedly because of having a giant fucking lever pushing in the frame's weakest direction.
