ITT: JUST interchanges
>>1283856>Not going 100 miles north to see the stupid cluster fuck that is the 10-110 and politicians bringing an interstate to one lane to appease some poor neighborhoods.
>>1283856I don't see the problem. Not every interchange is going to be autistically symmetrical
>>1283856What about interchanges which were planned and then cancelled, leaving these weird islands between the two lanes? These are very interesting, as they showed forward planning for projects which were cancelled, either due to political or economic reasons.
>>1283856Pretty tame? >>1283885That's why one doesn't judge an interchange, or city, from bird's eye view. Drivers don't feel a thing about its apperance.
>>1283856>Welcome to New Jersey, Fuck You
>>1283900This one looks aesthetic though.
Are we gonna neglect the Providence Turbine?https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8260365,-71.4191848,16.53z
>>1283966Just post a pic anon
75% done interchange that was supposed to connect a never built highway that now serves as a glorified offramp to the regular road network
The loop around downtown KC more or less functions as one huge interchange
1960s plan to build a motorway parallel to a main road through the city, thankfully abandoned before most of it began but the shitty interchange that was supposed to be the north end of it still exists. Want to turn right from New North Road coming from either end? You can't.
>>1284012This is Peak American Urban planning right here
>>1284016No, this is
>>1284016It's not that bad. If there's a major wreck you can usually go the other way to get where you want to go unlike Atlanta for example, where it's one gigantic freeway and if there's a problem you're proper fucked
>>1283900It's also easy to navigate.
>>1284074Neat, where's that
>>1283966Just a slightly modified turbine. >>1284013So? Displacing right turns is a standard technique. Network-wise it doesn't seem necessary either.
>>1283966Just a slightly modified turbine. >>1284013Displacing right turn is a standard technique. Network-wise they don't seem necessary to be provided here.
Fuck you 4chan. Is it aborted or wrong captcha?>>1284123>>1284124
It's the most fucked one in Brisbane
>>1283856
>>1284504
>>1284505Where is this? I’m guessing a developing country with some money and no technical experts.
>>1284525It's an undeveloped country with neither the money nor technical experts.
>>1284085East Hartford, CT
>>1283895Connecticut has dozens of these, although they had a habit of building the full interchange and then canceling the connecting highway. They finally built a highway connecting the southern half of this interchange, but for years it literally didn't connect to anything after the Hartford belt way was canceled, and the northern half is still abandoned.
>>1284529Beat me to posting that one.>>1283895>>1284673At the other end on the proposed beltway, I91 has a double bulge in the median for the planned interchange part of which was built before the abutters realized they would be inside the junction. you can still see the planned ROW going off the the west, partly filled with houses that were built since it was canceled.
>>1284674>>1283895Here's a nice bit of dickery. CT and neighboring Rhode Island jointly planned route 78 connecting Westerly to I95. Rhode island built their part up to the state line, but Ct said ah fuck it, leaving just the median bulge iin 95.
>>1284676>>1283895Here's another bulge left in the median of route 8 for an interchange with a future upgrade of rt6.
>>1284678>>1283895I84 through Hartford has a ton of interchanges for aborted highways. I don't remember what the one on the left was supposed to be for, and the one on the right was for a planned route 71 highway.
>>1284679>>1283895Here's the beaut they built for 189, complete with ramps that stop midair. This one and the next one I'll post aren't going to last much longer; 84 is due to be completely rebuilt through here, straightening it and getting rid of the superfluous interchanges
>>1284680>>1283895This one is really stupid. It was planned because the main interchange with I91 and I84 din't have ramps for all the movements. So they planned an entirely new highway because the other interchange was missing a key ramp. Needless to say, when the other interchange was finally completed with the addition of a flyover ramp, this highway was canceled.Gladly this is going to get nuked too when 84 is straightened soon.
>>1284685>>1283895The mixmaster in east hartford was already mentioned up thread, so I'll just add that there's a moderately active proposal to reroute I84 to the unused set of ramps bypassing part of downtown hartford, downgrading the current mainline.
>>1284525Myanmar, IIRC
>>1284019How long before Spring & Dayton are connected
>>1284693>>1283895Here's the interchange built for route 25 on I84.(yes, its THAT sandy hook)
>>1284706Oops
>>1283856Imagine backing up traffic 6 miles just because people don't know how to let people merge and change lanes. I don't think there is a worse interchange than this monstrosity.
>>1283885>>1283897That particular junction is considered engineering failure due to permanent the traffic jam caused by forcing motorists to make hurried lane changes over short distances to make the right exit.
>>1284074>>1284529OH YEAH! THAT fucking thing! Makes me regret just posting a turbine in the middle of downtown
>>1284680That reminds me of the aborted ramps to 695 in Charlestown off of 93
love this one near london
>>1284778What's wrong with it?
>>1283974this one in England.looks silly but actually flows alright and is safer than an intersection
>>1284781There's nothing wrong with this one though.
There's nothing wrong with this one in Rome, Georgia, but it's neat because it hasn't been upgraded since it was built, presumably in the 60s or 70s (it handles traffic fine though). It's just state roads and US highways. In the middle is a series of arches called the Gateway to Rome.

>>1284798Where is this? That's pretty cool for being a clusterfuck
>>1284813Reservoir station, Melbourne, Australia
>>1284813best part is they're removing the level crossing but not unfucking the road intersection
>>1284838An 'intersection' of two parallel roads (busy ones no less) is going to be difficult any way you approach it. Removing the grade crossing is about the only way to really improve it.
This is the junction of I-20 (left-right) and I-285 in western Atlanta. At first glance it seems pretty normal. However, trucks must use 285 unless they have local business, so most semi traffic will be using the ramps which are short, have tight turns, and some are left-hand entrance/exits. The worst ramp is probably from 285 south to 20 west, it has a sharp curve and requires merging and causes weaving because there's an exit shortly after it for Fulton Industrial Blvd--it's common for traffic to back up into 285 waiting to make the exit. The cloverleaf from 20 east to 285 north sees a fair amount of trucks flipping over because trucks overestimate its radius. In addition I think this junction is poorly signed. It's also one of the few major junctions in Atlanta that hasn't been rebuilt since the interstate was laid down in the 60s.
>>1284012Why the fuck is there a freeway downtown
>>1284798>>1284813>>1284816>>1284838Once you really look at it, it's actually pretty good considering what they had to work with. It could have been far worse.
>>1286440Why wouldn't there be
>>1286448It's a huge waste of space in an otherwise high-value land area - it could at the very least have been buried

>>1286475Pretty cool. Hope it can ride out the next big earthquake.>>1286476Maybe but every big city has a freeway going near downtown. Not a big deal imo
>>1286538>Every big city has a freeway downtownBecause every big city had shit planning in the 20th century. This is peak amerifat posting
>>1286475>Harbour Freeway StationYou're telling me there's an actual light rail stop somewhere in the middle of that mess? Talk about deterring pedestrians
>>1286671IIRC there's actually a junction between two lines there. I remember having to transfer from one line to another on a platform stuck between multiple highways in order to go downtown from the airport. LA's metro rail is an utter shit show.
>>1286669>Because every big city had shit planning in the 20th century. There is literally nothing wrong with freeways inside urban cores
>>1286669???The C1 runs right through the center of Chiyoda which would be considered "downtown" Tokyo. Even in places like Hong Kong and Singapore thats the case.
>>1284012>this kills the city
>>1286538Not so, most Euro cities don't.They prefer bypasses around the city
>>1286798Just because it's Japan doesn't men they can't have shit urban planning tooThat highway is absolutely hideous and has ruined several important landmarks, most notably the Nihonbashi bridge north of Ginza. All distances from Tokyo are calculated from there, and it is a beautiful 1800s landmark, yet in the 60's and 70's construction-addicted governments slapped pointless highways all over everything as it was seen as a modern thing to do.There's a concerted effort to bury that highway in several locations
>>1286865>this kills the cityIt really doesn't though. There's a lot of hemming and hawing made about them but I have yet to see a city destroyed by a freeway>>1286870Our cities have both. USA wins again
>>1286870>>1286865Bypasses are retarded in the sense that they cater to the minority of traffic heading by a major city, whereas a motorway that heads directly into the city provides access for the majority of traffic that do want to head into the city.Glasgow is a prime example of relative competence in British motorway planning, it was originally going to have a motorway box like Kansas City, but the project was cancelled and only half of the city centre ring road was built, however having half of a ring road is more than what you can say for any other UK city, as the M8 today ignores the bypass hivemind and takes people to where they want to go: the heart of the city. That's why Glasgow - despite being the most populated city in Scotland - is not even in the top 10 of the most congested places in the UK, even Aberdeen is more congested (albeit for the reason of having no through road/bypass completely). Manchester - with a population equal to that of Glasgow - is the second most congested city in the UK, despite having a bypass along with a glorified dual carriageway masquerading as a motorway, although it must be acknowledged that the context of Manchester is slightly different compared to Glasgow, which is the centre of its conurbation whilst Manchester is sandwiched between Liverpool and Sheffield. My point still stands however, through-road motorways do the same job as bypasses but better as it not only takes traffic away from regular roads whilst also taking traffic to where most people want to go, unlike bypasses.
>>1286798All of them circumvents the downtown, and have their own problems yet.>TokyoAre you comparing Japanese Uban Expressway to US Urban Freway standards? In Chiyoda-ku, it's not fully underground because of the complex Miyakezaka Jct and Kasumigaseki Ic. In Chuo-ku, rivers are reclaimed for it and Tokyo Expressway. Shutoko is now trying to tunnel Nihonbashi section to replace the elevated structure. >Hong Kong Which is criticized, narrow and restrained when elevated, or underground. >Singapore Explain how it plows through downtown? >>1286874>several locationsWhere else other than Nihonbashi?
>>1287058>>1286874It was hastily planned and constructed for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and during the economic boom. Somewhat similarly, the Haneda Monorail is also far from ideal.
>>1286870How do people get downtown
>>1287075On roads. Euro cities don't have a downtown comparable to US downtowns, that stuff tends to spread across a larger area.
>>1284127Why not one huge circle?
>>1286942>I have yet to see a city destroyed by a freewayThe Bronx
>>1287056INDUCED DEMAND. Building a freeway to downtown will not reduce congestion, it will just mean fewer people taking transit, walking, cycling, or going somewhere else. Having a bypass around the inner city will force most downtown trips in ways other than private passenger vehicles, as many do in European cities. It's like the freeway shills can't imagine a city functioning without 2 cars per household.
>>1287103You know why freeways induce demand over other forms of transportation, because they're better, faster, and more convenient
>>1287107Wrong againhttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braess%27s_paradox>Whether one street is preferable to another depends not only on the quality of the road, but also on thedensity of the flow. If every driver takes the path that looks most favourable to them, the resultant running times need not be minimal. Furthermore, it is indicated by an example that an extension of the road network may cause a redistribution of the traffic that results in longer individual running times.
>>1287103Your theory is meaningless dribble when put into practice. The facts speak for themselves; Glasgow has less congestion than cities that use bypasses, despite being the largest and most densely populated part of Scotland. Also, most people here either don't have 2 cars or do not have the capacity to store 2 cars. The American mindset works best when implemented by a European.
>>1287100>The BronxIt's still there and thriving fyi>>1287103>INDUCED DEMAND.This is a meme. If you build something people want, of course they're going to use it. Just use the more proper term, 'demand.'
