This is the tale of a young colt who wants to be a hero, and is about to embrace his destiny...

Last time, Tough Cookie was in the middle of a pressing investigation when he was saved by a brief reprieve granted by Celestia herself. Intrigued by Cookie's unique ability to control the Ejj AI nicknamed 'Cookie Jar,' and by his boundless fiery passion for heroics, Celestia allowed Cookie and Lucy to remain at the castle as guests while she held an emergency meeting with leaders from
across Equestria and beyond. They even got to meet one such leader: Prince Pupa, the flamboyant changeling ambassador.

Later, in the royal library, Cookie's mother and Lucy's father arrived to take their children home. An agreement was reached wherein Lucy's father promised to accompany the foals during their time in Canterlot, allowing Cookie's mother to reluctantly allow Cookie to help the Princess. It was at dinner with her that Cookie and his friends learned of the history of the Ejj, and how they once ruled over Equestria alongside ponykind until their overuse of magic led to their self-imposed exile.

Later, while Cookie and Jar were in the midst of an examination, word came through of another attack by the Ejj. What could these brutal aliens be planning now...?

Right, hero time! Cookie calmly and safely exits the castle just in time to see... Some kind of weird mishmash of geometric shapes burning through the atmosphere. As fire pours off the invading machine, it suddenly breaks into 2 pieces. That isn't supposed to happen... Maybe it was built in Space Mexico.

FALLING AT TERMINAL SPEED?
BOY WE ARE *RUNNING* AT TERMINAL SPEED.
SMOLHORSEPOWER TIMES ONE HUNDRED, REMEMBER?

Tough Cookie literally burns his way to the predicted impact zone, his focus locked on the X-shaped UFO the whole time. As it careens towards the city, it looks like it starts to slow down, and eventually it comes to a stop; it's just hovering there, a few hundred feet above the rooftops. Now that it's not spinning wildly through the air, Cookie can get a better look at it: it's some sort of giant black cube, about the size of a small house, with a red light at the center of each side. As Cookie approaches, one of those red lights turns itself towards him, seemingly watching his approach. It doesn't attack or attempt to communicate - it just floats there silently.
Waiting.

You can't reach it to hit it or otherwise interact with it. Cookie tries shining a light on it next.

The big floating square utters a disturbing noise that sounds almost like a high-pitched scream, then it fires a great honking death ray right at Cookie!

...The giant space square has really bad aim.

Or at least that's what Cookie thinks until he realizes what it just did.

The shockwave makes his ears throb. The smell of smoke and ozone floods his nostrils.

For the first time, Tough Cookie realizes that he's not just 'playing' hero. This is for real.

His little heart is gripped by fear.

For the first time ever, the CYOA extends to the soundtrack as well! Choose your muse! ...Ic.

>HYPE METER rising

Cookie snaps out of it and returns fire at the machine. His horn laser and Jar's scatterbombs shoot through the twilit sky like fireworks, aiming right at the cube.
But the cube quickly rearranges itself, becoming 'bulkier' (for lack of a better word) and making strange mechanical noises. Now, everything that fires at it explodes before connecting with it.

I'm going to stop here for now. And I'd like to leave you guys with a question this time:

Would you prefer pretty updates, or quick updates? I can likely churn out an update every 30 or 40 minutes easy if I sacrifice all quality (meticulous detailing); I feel like a slow pace really ruins the immersion of an adrenaline-fueled action story like this.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>33699201
At least it's distracted for now. Can Jar jam it's sensors or send it commands?

>>33699214
Thanks for running.
Maybe fight sequences could be done less detailed, I'm fine with waiting for more quality in calmer parts.
>>
>>33699214
I prefer quality but fights can be less detailed as anon already said, but in the end of the day, I just want you to choose which you enjoy doing more. Don't want to pick something you'll have less fun with.
>>
>>33699201
Can we trick it into switching to something that can't defend?
>>
>>33699201
Hm...

So in other words...

Use a cunning illusion and attack its weak point for massive damage?
>>
>>33699214
For the more action-y parts it could be quick updates, where it can normally be pretty updates if you want.
>>

>>
So, quicker fight scenes, nicer character scenes. Got it.

Don't worry, not curled up in a depressed ball of misery under the blanket this time - just had an appointment and some errands. Updates will continue either tomorrow or Sunday; I'm not sure which yet. I'll try and keep you guys updated appropriately, though!

Jar can't do much to the Rubicant, but he may know a weakness you can exploit.

As Jar and Cookie deliberate, several distant roaring sounds reach their ears. It reminds Cookie of a Wonderbolts show he once saw a film reel of.
>>
>>33709407
So a total of 3.7 seconds to switch from one mode to another? How long does it take for our attacks to reach it? Does it'd defense affect all sides or just the side taking the hit?
>>
>>33709407
So we just need to have a small pause in our attack to open a window of opportunity to actually hit it? Maybe we can fire a laser beam then?
>>
>>33709407
It seems like they're not supposed to fight without support. What can Jar tell us about the second piece of the pillar?
Cease the attack and call his mom a rubicunt.

>>33709441
>>33709531

Trying to use his laser has prompted a new configuration this time: the Rubicant is using some kind of lightning attack that's preventing any of those guards that just showed up from getting too close to it.

As for the second piece of the new pillar, it seems to have landed somewhere close to the first one. Judging by the lack of additional explosions or being yelled at by Drejj again, it doesn't appear to be doing anything bad. For now.
>>
>>33709787
It seems we need to run up to it and jump from a building to get on it. While in midair we can activate our shield so it doesn't try to pull any kind of funny business.
>>
>>33709787
You didn't answer my third question. Do we have any indirect attacks? Maybe we can hit it on two sides at once.
>>
>>33709787
Six seconds, really? What a boring lazy laser sticks out of our horn sometimes. Gonna get closer. Can we use our broken levitator to disrupt his levitation somehow?
>>
>>33709891

The largest time window would be an even 6 seconds if we launch an attack right as it starts switching to something non-defensive. The only other options would be to find a way to get closer to lessen the attack's travel time or to hit it from multiple directions at the same time. That's if it doesn't have an effective omnidirectional defense.

Getting closer sounds like the best idea right now. Cookie picks out the tallest building in his immediate vicinity and makes a beeline for it, zipping past stunned and hiding civilians on his way to the stairwells and up to the roof. Once there, he sees that the Rubicant is focusing on the guards now, as well as... Celestia?! When did she get here?

And why is she suddenly getting so much bigger?
>>
>>33710202
Rescue the princess! Looks like it doesn't need a special mode to defend against melee attacks.

Crazy idea: Is it possible to use our bubble shield to ride the laser if we get ontop of it? If so, tell Celestia to go down while we leap off her back. Splitting into two targets should give it a long enough pause for us to get above the laser as it decides who to track.

If Celestia drops her shield to fire, Cookie's will go down instantly. There's no alternative but to MOVE!

The laser careens past Celestia as she takes off like a rocket, trying to reposition herself for another strike. Looking back on the devastation, Cookie can see that the entire Royal Guard platoon that'd accompanied the Princess has been wiped out; the few conscious stallions left are either carrying their squad mates to safety or are just plain hiding, hoping against hope that the patch of rubble they'd hunkered down behind isn't struck by another attack.

The problem now is that the Rubicant has switched configurations again, this time in favor of a form that seems to give it a way to deal with moving targets.

'You should be faster.'
And just what are you basing that on?
...
The answer is... nothing!
Turning into the tendrils as several of them fly past gives them plenty of to ensnare Cookie and Celestia. They bind tightly, like the tentacles of a hungry octopus. Celestia struggles valiantly... for a few seconds, before the electricity starts pumping through her body.
As well as Cookie's.
Warning sirens and Celestia's screams ring in Cookie's ears as millions of volts pump through him and Jar.

Well, you were right about one thing: it CAN'T be that easy, no.
>>

>HYPE meter rising

A plan comes together in Cookie's head, fueled by a mix of adrenaline and Jar augmenting his speed - including his reaction time. Spying one of the electro-tendrils swinging past him as the shields retract, he kicks off Celestia's back and launches himself at it. He reaches out...
He's got it!
Like a grappling hook, the line pulls him in, crackling with discharging electricity all the while. It stings at Cookie's hoof and makes his muscles tingle, but with only a single broken tendril doing the shocking, Cookie can endure the pain, and he keeps his grip clamped tight.
As he crosses the invisible threshold that puts him in firing range, the Rubicant twitches and undulates; it looks like it's trying to change configuration again, but it can't... maybe it needs to retract its tendrils first?
Whatever the case may be,Cookie is rapidly approaching it. Sparks fly as the electricity surges higher and higher. This may be your chance!
What kind of attack should Cookie use?

"Operator, there are more effective weapons available than drills-
>"THE HORN IS A SYMBOL OF OUR MAGIC! IT IS THE WEAPON AND SHIELD OF ALL PONYKIND! NOW LET'S GO!"

Cookie and Jar produce the longest drill horn that they can... which is pretty dinky.
But it's not the size of the horn - it's the power within it that matters! Cookie impacts the Rubicant like a dart into a board... but he can't pierce through it.

According to one of the guards, the Pillar has some kind of electrical shield around it that fries anything that gets too close to it or uses magic on it; that's why it hasn't been taken apart or moved yet. Nopony knows how to.

While Cookie keeps Drejj talking, he slowly makes for the Pillar... or, rather, the Scale now.
These Ejj guys sure capitalize a lot of stuff, don't they?
Also, uh... wow... that's a BIG crater it made... good thing it hit the park and not, like, where all the houses are. Or the toy store.
As Cookie gets close to the epicenter, a fierce heat blasts his face. Something down here really reeks, kind of like the inside of a hot oven. Or Mr. Bite's garage after he's been welding and cutting a lot of metal.
All of a sudden, Drejj's tirade is cut off by that first nasally Ejj interrupting him; it sounds like whatever he has to say shuts Drejj up really fast.

According to Jar, there's some sort of energy transfer involved in the onto-whatevering; either a conscious desire, or a preprogrammed command. Jar, being little more than the Ejj equivalent of a suit of cardboard box armor, has neither.
At least, that's what he THINKS the reason is.
Cookie reconvenes with Celestia, who has the same idea as him. But she's not the only one waiting for him...

Oh, right, it'd probably be a good idea to tell Celestia the thing now if Cookie's planning on leaving, too. He catches up and warns her of the thing Jar said, which he... kind of can't remember, so Jar explains it for him. She needs to have a guard write it down, but judging by the look on her face, she looks like she at least gets the general idea: Ejj 'magic' (technology? energy?) is bad for Equestria. She thanks Cookie and goes on her way, passing Lucy's dad in the process. Oh, hey, he finally caught up.
So, there's a buttload of stuff you can do now. What'll it be?

>Go back to the castle and wait for the next meeting.
>Go back to the castle and wander around aimlessly for yuks.
>Go back to the castle and take a nap.
>Hang out with Lucy's dad.

Well, this was a good idea!
The moment Cookie gets back, his mom practically pounces on him like a cat onto a mouse, squeezing him against her chest and sniffling and kissing him, like she'd never see him again. Embarrassing, but kind of nice.
...Until she gets over her sappiness and starts ranting at Cookie to never scare her like that again and he could've gotten hurt or lost and she's going to write the radio company about those cartunes that are corrupting the minds of foals and blah blah blah blah.
Cookie's dad tries to help calm her down, but... he's, uh... kind of...
Well, Memelord Jones calls him a 'cuck,' whatever THAT means...
Anyway, Cookie finally gets sent upstairs with the warning that if he tries to play hero anymore, he's grounded... so she thinks Cookie's job with the Princess is over, too.
Great.
Sighing and shaking his head, Cookie trudges down the hall and stops to see somepony who's GLAD to see him...
Or, at least, somepony that won't yell at him.

Choco Drop is asleep in her crib, tucked away under her blankieand clinging to a stuffed Martial Arts Monitor Lizard: Romeo, the one with the red headband. Because he's the cool one.
That's Cookie's old blankie, and his old stuffed lizard. Living in Canterlot means his family doesn't have a lot of money leftover after paying their more-gidge, so a lot of Cookie's old stuff is Choco's now.
Cookie knows that, and he thinks Choco knows that, too. Maybe that's why she calls him her 'heewo.'
Choco squirms a little in her sleep, whining like she's having a bad dream or something.

Activating Cookie's suit makes a big, bright ruckus that scares Choco and makes her cry again. Cookie's mother comes barreling up the stairs and tries to comfort her daughter, giving Cookie withering looks.
Apparently, getting her to go to bed without her goodnight kiss from her brother had been a harrowing task, and Cookie not only woke her up again; he also got her worked up enough with that light show that now it's going to take awhile to get her back to bed.

Dreams can be a lot of things. Usually they're images you see in your head when you're asleep and sometimes they're like being awake but you're actually still in bed resting.
Dreams are also ideas you want to bring into reality. For instance, I always wanted to fight to protect others and today I did that. One dream came true. Now the next one is saving equestria.

You ever notice how awkward this style of dialogue can be? Where you have one side saying like 3 different, largely unrelated things that the other side then has to stop and respond to in sequence, in spite of one of those things being more pivotal than the others, or maybe evoking a much more pressing emotional response than the rest? I don't know, it just sounds kind of inorganic to me.
Well, I digress. Just thinking out loud here.
In any case, Jar responds with a question... this is getting kind of deep for a story about some half-retarded kid fighting alien goat-men, huh?
>>
>>33760845
Jar is already kinda learning about 'friendship' from experience, isn't he? I mean, we do consider him a friend of ours, despite our short time together.
Feelings are not something you can specifically control, but we believe Jar has them.

No better way to learn about deep and philosophical concepts than through a foal fighting aliens.
>>
>>33760845
They say that every good story teaches you something about how others feel. Or you can just fake it till you make it, like most ponies do.

>>
>>33760845
Stories can teach you how others feel.

Knowing how you yourself feel... Thats tricky. Emotions can sneak up on you.

Jar is having trouble understanding. Cookie gets the weird feeling that there's something he's not telling him...

Either way, we're happy to bring him to the library if he still wants to take a look on what books are able to teach.
>>33761034
Unsure if I want to support or vote against this. Seems like a difficult talk Jar might not be ready for, if suspicions are correct.

I say we go to sleep, unless other Anons want to keep talking to Jar.

A soul is even harder to explain, but it's the most important thing one can have. It gives desire, feelings, thoughts, and so on. Something we think he has.

A book on philosophy, friendship, and feelings would help more on explaining everything more than Cookie. So yeah.

Writing all this felt kind of nice.

So, where would you like to continue?

>when Cookie wakes up

Let's start from the top.
>>
>>33762139
When we wake up, gotta get in some quality time at the library before we go back to Celestia to save the world

Righto, nothing like getting a move-on bright and early! Especially when there's no school on account of aliens. That's, like, every kid's dream snow day!
Even though it's currently April.
Cream Cookie reads her son the riot act when he tries to go outside, but he promises her he's only going to the library. That seems to make her happy. As for Choco Drop... well, she's a baby. She's just happy to see her brother again after he was gone for so much of yesterday.

On the way to the library, Cookie notices lots of guards all over the place, and a whole bunch of places are off-limits due to getting all lasered. Some of the buildings and streets that look okay are being blocked off, too.
When Cookie peeks down one alley, he sees why: pieces of broken machinery are scattered everywhere, laying in little craters like they fell from high up in the sky.
...W-well, that's probably not because of anything YOU did, right? Heh heh... heh...

Let's look for books explaining stuff about dreams and souls. Maybe even ask the people reading here about it. They're in a library so they have to be smart and read stuff already ready?
>>
>>33762483
Those guards are giving us awfully mean looks. They probably just don't appreciate our heroics, r-right?

Yeah, the guards must not appreciate Cookie's efforts. Of course.
Inside the library, Cookie reluctantly starts his search for the appropriate books for Jar.
Or, he WOULD, but... he apparently doesn't have to...?
>>
>>33765981
Neat. And what is a soul?
Now what about the parts scattered through the city? The guard has no way of knowing which ones are dangerous. Should we participate in disarming?
>>
>>33765981
Oh...that's convenient. Did Jar learn much fron these books on what we talked about last night?

I know, right? Now you don't need to waste 2 hours on a bunch of boring-ass updates in the library that ultimately won't lead to anything interesting happening!
Besides, even if Jar gets what a soul is now, he still doesn't know whether or not HE has one... there's not many nonfiction books on 'living' machines in the library, and none of them mention anything about machines as complex as Jar is... so, for now, Jar is still uncertain.
After all, you could read books about human anatomy, psychology, different religions and philosophies, and all that stuff every day of your life. But if none of those books tell you anything about yourself specifically... then what are they really teaching you?
...Am I getting too deep again? Sorry; I don't get to talk too much. Besides, engaging discussions are nice sometimes.
>>
>>33766287
Can Jar scan the mess? Also, debating is fun, too bad I prefer physics over philosophy.
>>

>>33766287
And if an old book says something about you, you better suspect an ulterior motive behind every line. Something got the author interested in you, and now he's naturally interested in either shaping you into something or keeping you an observable research subject. In both cases it may still be possible to learn something despite his best efforts to feed you only the parts of information he wants you to have, but reading about general stuff and manually adjusting authors observation to your local reality should be easier ten times out of ten.

Let's go home so our mom doesn't worry and can ask what it was like at the library.

>>33766882

A good point: Cookie DOESN'T clean his own room. But there's no alien doohickeys to be found in his room, either, sooooo... off he goes!
Cookie deduces that the biggest mess is probably right under where the Rubicant exploded, so he heads there. There's lots of guards everywhere, not to mention ponies in weird costumes. They're being overseen by a mare in a fancy suit and sunglasses.
Like usual, the guards start getting antsy as soon as Cookie gets close. This is going to get old real quick.
>>
>>33767011

So, as you may have guessed, I don't have the time to run today on account of it being Easter.
...Remember when I actually updated on holidays like this? Good times...
But!
On the plus side, I'm squeezing in work on the GaT loredump whenever I can today. ALL the writing is done; I just need to pretty up one last sketch and make another one more or less from scratch.
Who knows, maybe it'll be done today. That wouldn't be such a bad Easter gift, would it?
>>
>>33770194
Maybe not.
