I once even had a Chinese lecturer stop a class to tell half of his students to stop fucking speaking Chinese.
>>33676021If only I could be so grossly incandescent.
How closely should canon be followed? I know that it's impossible to follow canon completely (it's self-contradictory), but some AU fics veer so far off from canon that they're basically original fiction.
>>33676189Doing non-canon is fine, and following canon is good as long as you're not more inconsistent than the show.As long as you don't half-ass it you're good. Artistic license and all.

Hmm, I'm reading that CMC fic by Gaydez and there's this scene where Apple Bloom gets trolled with a fake cartographer cutie mark. So uh yeah I got a fic idea.OC pony (or could be an AU with X existing pony) gets a cartographer cutie mark and gets sent on a job by Celestia, Luna, you name it to make an epic map and it turns into an epic fic.+1 or -1?
>>33677656>gets a cartographer cutie markI'm sure you could have Blueblood fill that role.
>>33677657Blueblood is a faggot pony so no.>>33677658Well I'm stupid. Any fics like that?
>>33677668Don't know. Probably not.
>>33676189I think the important thing is to make it clear that your departures from canon are deliberate, and that they play a role in the story rather than just to pander to popular fanon, promote your own fandoms/headcanons/fantasies, or whatever.
>>33677656That sounds less an idea for fic than just an idea for how to start the fic off.(Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one "Blueblood is sent on a journey and becomes a decent pony" fic make reference to his cutie mark in the description.)
>>33677786Would you happen to know any?
I liked The Celestia Code, could a kind anon please recommend something similar?
>>33678513M Y D I A R Y D E S U
>>33678572I don't understand
>>33678513Is it even any good? It's one of those fics that I'm going to end up reading just because it gets mentioned a lot.>>33678594Probably The Star In Yellow.
>>33678600I enjoyed it but I'm easy to please. Twilight stays in character, the OC character is good, the plot is interesting, and it builds off the show's lore nicely. That being said it felt a bit rushed, especially near the end.I'll read the star in yellow. I liked Greg's video of it but I can't remember if I read the original or not.
From a reader's perspective, what is fan fic for? I used to think that it was a way for a reader to get more out of a franchise that they've ran out of good content for, but there's barely an fics that are like the show in any real way, so that clearly can't be the case. Later on I thought that it was a way to get different takes on a franchise that you've loved, but even that doesn't hold up because a lot of fics change so much that it barely counts. At best, it's just a 'what could've been' sort of deal.Deep down, I think that I only read fics because I can't be bothered to find the time to get invested in something new. It kinda reminds me of >>33666688.
>>33678632"To get more out of a franchise" is correct, you're at fault for assuming that means "the pony show in written form" and nothing else.
>>33678632I have a touch of the 'tism and a really hard time getting attached to characters. When I read actual books it's usually hard scifi or something idea-heavy where the author is a turbo autist that can't into social interaction, like Greg Egan. I've yet to find a book that genuinely made me feel something for the characters.Fanfiction is cathartic because I can actually empathize with the characters while reading, and I care what happens to them. Also, I've definitely read a couple fics that were genuinely better written than some of the actual published shit that gets recommended to me at times.
>>33678669>I've yet to find a book that genuinely made me feel something for the characterNot even a VN? I mean shit dude, didn't you read something like Harry Potter is a kid?
>>33678674I've never touched a VN because I'm not that into anime. Any you recommend?I don't remember caring for the main three characters of Harry Potter that much. I liked Dumbledore a lot though.
>>33677656I am now reminded of Moonstuck and my day is ruined.
>>33678513Keep reading iisaw I guess? The quality does deteriorate unfortunately but they're all fun reads if you go in without expecting something particularly deep. Just enjoy the adventure and you'll enjoy the story.>>33678632When you only ever fap to ponies, have a pony imaginary wife, and your greatest wish is to go live among the ponies and/or become a pony, it's only natural that a story with ponies will be more enjoyable than a story without ponies.Other fanfictions I personally don't care about because I am not nearly as invested in any other setting. Some book or stories or whatever are neat but not to the point where I'll read shitty fanmade spinoffs just to get more.
>>33678632>Deep down, I think that I only read fics because I can't be bothered to find the time to get invested in something new.Maybe you don't need something new. If I know people are going to write about this world I know and love, I can jump into any story and find something I like. The day I stop having 50 million words of interesting things on my read later list I'll go look for entertainment elsewhere, but it probably won't be fanfics. And sure, you're missing out on Everything Else. But everyone else is missing out on My Little Dashie, so that's a fair trade.
>>33678632I think fanfics are an outlet for a fictional setting to go in directions the author couldn't or wouldnt go in but still are worth venturing down. The more a setting has 'holes' the more fanfics are possible. I theorize that some settings are far more easy to fanfic than others. Mlp, harry potter, naruto etc. Others much harder like lord of the rings or one piece because they're far more fully realized and theres hardly anything else to be 'said' in those respective stories that the authors haven't already written.
>>33678600>The Star In YellowIt's bad.
>>33678985What's wrong with it?
>>33679040I can't really remember. I just that when I read it I disliked it. Greg's video makes it seem so much better than what it is, imo.
A great April Fool's joke for the site would be if Skirts did a troll update of Austraeoh but the chapter is just another one of his Flash Sentry fetish stories.
>>33679229Or better, he just starts posting the rest of easthorse in one of those fetish fics, and nobody notices for weeks.
I hate you, Hiro.I hate you so much.
>>33679494He hates it!
>>33679494Paying attention to it only makes it more real. Just ignore it. It's broken on 4chanx anyway.
>>33676189Depends on the story and really more the timeline. If it's explicitly taking place sometime during the show, then you're bound to follow things much more closely. This is why pretty much everything but "poking fun at episode plot" comedies and "plots of the week" fics makes sure not to give readers an exact date to set the story in.>>33676978>adventure fics can't have good endingOn Wings of Steel had an excellent climax and ending. It's problem was the norse plot was way more boring than the griffon warfic one.>>33677229>joke updates, and mock cancellations?Do people still do that? I thought the joke had been worn out by 2013.>>33677325I'd say 5% good, 5% okay, 10% "that's a fetish?", 40% mediocre/boring, and 40% crap.>>33677656Way too vague. Adventure fics always have to have some driving motive (finding a cure, getting reinforcements, destroying an evil, etc.) to keep the characters from just saying "fuck it" and going home. Making a map seems like a really poor motive to go on an adventure.>>33678513Lunar Cypher? Though I seem to remember being really disappointed by the big plot, as it was hastily resolved/dealt with.>>33678600It's even better now that the author rewrote the synopsis and stopped baiting people with the fake Tyrantlestia mystery plot.>>33678632>what is fan fic for?Telling stories the source material can't (major characters dying in the plot, edge, complex stuff in simpler settings, etc.) or won't (shipping, some types of comedies, exploring worldbuilding implications, etc.).If you look at MLP, there are very, very few fics out there that could actually be slotted into the show, either because they don't fit the demo or their plots are too unwieldy or even not long enough for 22 minutes. Media limitations like length, need for commercial breaks, budgetary constraints, actor scheduling, etc. all allow fanfics to tell stories the source material really never could.
>>33679591He hates it!!

Look guys I get it, but you have to understand. I need the idea of something more to continue my entrancement. You all know that the best thing to do is to educate and improve someones prowess. Now we just need someone to adhere to those magnificent powers of mental affliction. Now please, come to this post and move that scroller to the side of the post and press the button that needs to be done. For it can not be differentiated or ignored that the point is that I need help in understanding why this is happening to me in the first place. So come over here and understand with me so that we can come together right now and forward our agenda into focusing our power of the next generation into our own hands. Isn't that something that we should all adhere too? Shouldn't there be a good reason to let someone at least be responded by? Come now, you know much better than I do that the post that will be linked needs to be felt a better. You know it must be finished you know it must be consumed. You can not disgrace or fathom the way that things must be and you must know better for it.>>33686033 so do as this has done for thee, because it needs to be done at all times.

You should know that the world is at best when replicated into replies for the master who needs it the most. Come now my friend, we need to come and reply to this post so that no one could defy the idea that people need to coalesce and turn on their minds so that things would be better for everyone my man. Now come over here, review the post that was behind, and click on the post link that would garner a good way of not being such a dickolatus man. Come here and press the button so that we shall come together and not be unfettered to the unusual weirdness of actuality.

Hey, I have a question. If "to pin" means to fix blame or responsibility for something on someone, then isn't "pinning the blame" redundant?
>>33698067Sorta. I think 'pinning the blame' was how that definition was derived. 'Don't pin this on me!' sounds more fluid than 'Don't pin the blame on me!', but both are perfectly correct.I'm sure this is a case of one way being slightly more archaic than the other.
>>33698067No, just "pin" implies "pin the blame". It's just a natural contraction/shortcut that arose over time. I would even say that "pin" as a word or concept in general pretty much never means "pin the blame", except in very specific contexts where you'd use "pin the blame" and just omit "the blame".Kind of like when people say "happy birthday", they aren't stating that your birthday is happy: what it really means is "I wish you a happy birthday". But the "I wish" bit is implied and omitted by convention. The word "happy" by itself doesn't really mean "I wish you a happy", but in specific contexts it's implied to stand in for that.

>>33702264As long as you're having fun, there is no problem.Just accept you have shit taste.
I go through a cycle.First, I read bad fics and get actual enjoyment out of them. Then, they start blending together and at best I get mild entertainment.By that time with some luck my hunt for something good I haven't seen before pays off. Maybe somebody finally gives a good recommendation, maybe I peer into my RIL and find some story that I never got around to, try it, and it turns out to be fucking great. Then things are fantastic, and I'm truly enjoying myself for the first time in weeks if not months. If I'm lucky, it's decently long, and/or has sequels of similar quality. Then it's over and suddenly all the trash I was reading seems completely unreadable. So then I'm stuck with nothing good to read again. Usually I'll read nothing for a while because it's all so tiresome. Then I'll get bored enough that I'll find some trash fics, maybe some greentexts or whatever, without any real expectations of quality but just hoping they'll provide light entertainment. Then eventually the experience of reading that one quality fic wears off and the shitfics set back in as normality, and I start kind of enjoying them again. And the cycle repeats. I'm currently in the "reading nothing" phase. Help me out anons, recommend me some shit.

>>33704768Novels can reasonably be expected to indent or double space paragraph breaks. It's atypical to do neither, and makes the text artifically harder to read.
>>33704742Default LaTeX style says no, you only do indents
>>33704771Published dead-tree text generally uses indents only. Line breaks between paragraphs are superfluous, and make for confusion when you use a line break to indicate a scene change. But when it comes to screen text, there are a bunch of people who sperg out if it doesn't have line breaks between paragraphs. If you have the line breaks, you don't really need to indent. But you should do at least one of those or the text just runs together.Happily, Fimfic allows you to set text to display whichever way you prefer to see it, regardless of how the author did it.
>>33704774Indents only is trash outside of actual books.

I was contemplating the horror of logging in to my old fimfic account that 13 year old me posted cringy comments on, and the possibility of making a new one, and realised that the guy didn't add any age requirements for accounts entering the challenge. So if anyone could be bothered enough, they could create as many alts as they wanted, and submit two stories on each. Better: since the princest bonus is only obtainable once, writing one 3,000 word story can bring in $45 while writing a second brings in a max of $25 no matter what you do, ignoring the bonus for a 95% upvote ratio since that requires way more effort than a 60% ratio. This means that the most efficient way would be to churn out a single 3,000 word fic per account to earn $45 for each. You'd also obviously need a corresponding amount of paypal accounts or other ways to receive money, and you'd need a modicum of care and effort to not be blatantly obvious. Then there's the possibility of sockpuppeting up to the 95% ratio using all your accumulated alts, but since that almost certainly explicitly goes against fimfic rules and fimfic admins have a lot more tools at their disposal to expose you, that's probably not worth it.
>>33713665>Then there's the possibility of sockpuppeting up to the 95% ratio using all your accumulated alts, but since that almost certainly explicitly goes against fimfic rules and fimfic admins have a lot more tools at their disposal to expose you, that's probably not worth it.Also, that's highly immoral. Go rob a hobo or something, you lightweight psycho.
>>33713665Sure you can do that, and then watch the guy change the payout rules once he realizes what's going on. Age requirements would be one fix but the better way would have been to rank all participants by jury and/or popular vote and then pay out prices based on the final rank or bracket they're in, even if that means less (low effort) entries.I mean if you're willing to shell out thousands of dollars for hot fetish fanfics you could at least put in some thought in your rule set beforehand.

>>33713502It's more like 50,000. The early ascension means that Twilight has to keep panicking even when she finds Dash. Hell, she's still panicking even when she goes to sleep.>and the author completely forgets about her afterwardThere's a few cool scenes where they play together, but pretty much every crew member but Twinkleshine becomes irrelevant once the date night happens. It kinda makes sense when you think about it. Really, until Luna comes back, what are any of the other crew members relevant for?Grumble grumble there's enough material for a sequel.
>>33714126>>33713502>every crew member but Twinkleshine becomes irrelevant once the date night happensWait, I might have the continuity fucked up. I'm talking about everything that follows from the moment where Twilight decides against using dragon fire to send the letter, but I can't recall why she flew down to Las Pegasus before attempting to send it.
>>33713540Why not put it in? If nothing else, you might get more readers (and therefore possible upvoters.)
>>33713753So milking $45 per fic for unlimited fics as opposed to $25 per fic for a maximum of two is all fine and dandy and completely ethical, but then sockpupetting your votes to get another $25 is where it becomes highly immoral?
>>33714374Both are immoral, and one goes the extra mile to break several rules at the same time. Here's a handy rule of thumb: Did the generous person actually paying you fuckers want or expect this to happen? No?Then don't take a fool's money, it's unethical.

>>33714395Can't argue with that.
>>33714387I haven't even written a single word of incest yet, calm down Also the guy said $3000 isn't a huge amount of money for him, and he's entirely willing to go over budget, so I'm confident that hypothetically scalping him of a couple hundred dollars would be less morally wrong than robbing a hobo.
>>33714481>I'm confident that hypothetically scalping him of a couple hundred dollars would be less morally wrong than robbing a hobo.Maybe, but I'll argue robbing him and vote manipulation at the same time is worse than robbing a hobo. Are The Enchanted Library's sequels any good?
>>33716208While myths are important to all cultures, Equestrian culture is unique in the regard that their millennia-long stewardship over nature has altered the need for mythical explanations of certain features of the natural world. In other cultures, where one lived at the mercy of uncontrollable weather and the steady march of seasons, matters such as rainfall or the bountiful harvest has been the domain of divine spirits and gods. In Equestria, there was no need to create some mythological figure who raises the sun, because everyone knew that this was undeniably the work of their Princess, or at some point Unicorns. That isn't to say Equestria has any less myths, or is any less spiritual, they've just developed in different ways. This deep cultural divide between Equestria and many of the distant cultures it is now in contact with has historically created a great deal of confusion for both parties, and although relations are more normalised in recent times, many a pony can still find themselves clueless when presented with some Yak idiom that references alien cultural concepts. For even though they've had to adapt to the spread of new information, traces of old and strange folk beliefs are still present in language and cultural practices.Even experienced diplomats like Princess Celestia can occasionally find herself bewildered by these differences, like when a discussion about the weather leads to the revelation that the Zebra deities often form incestuous couples, as all their gods are fundamentally the same family descended from the same two spirits. Think Cronus and Rhea, Zeus and Hera. For while the Zebra consider incest to be taboo, they also recognise that the gods are over such moral concerns. In fact, why would an immortal being choose to spend their life with a partner that is not their equal? Such timeless love can only lead to tragedy if it is not directed towards their own kind, towards their own family.Guess what kind of fic this lore is for.

>>33715337Kek, I'm just here for D&D.
>>33716610I read that in Rarity's voice. She's got a nice way of saying "Princest".
So, a couple of threads ago I asked for some advice about writing Luna as far as dialogue and whatnot. I ended up staying away from the more archaic stuff and just focused on vocab and tone. I think I did okay.https://www.fimfiction.net/story/434034/3/first-impressions-are-everything/opportunity-knocks
>>33717898https://www.fimfiction.net/story/434034/first-impressions-are-everythingfixed that link for you, bro.First impressions really are everything. It's on my tracking shelf, I'll give it a look later.
>>33718302Yeah, I probably should have just linked the main story page. The third chapter is the main focus of my post though; the first two are first person from Celestia's view, the third is Luna.
https://www.fimfiction.net/story/436343/kinsleys-cravingsWhy aren't you making run of the mill clop with a no-named protagonist and then auctioning the right to name it so some poor sap with too much money will pay you to do a Find and Replace with their OC's name?
>>33719363I'm slightly disappointed that this has nothing to do with Alfred *Kinsey*.>The Kinsey reports rated the percentage of people who had sexual interaction with animals at some point in their lives as 8% for men and 3.6% for women, and claimed it was 40–50% in people living near farms.(Not sure whether he said anything about fantasies of candy-colored high-school girls with dicks.)
>>33713540>mfw went from 1:1 to nearly 10:1 in two dayswew lad. I never thought the downvote brigade was real, but here I am. I sure am glad that apparently I didn't lose all my fucking writing skills on a two year hiatus from normal prose.

>>33720481Shink is creating a real-time fractal book.
>>33720481God fucking damn itWell, at least this explains why what I thought was a side story (Synchronicity) is stealing a major chunk of the main plot. Not sure why they decided to cut over to book 2 when GAOA is literally right in the middle of a story arc, instead of just adding an authors note "chapters 32-45 were actually written by Shinzakura". Whatever - at least the madman is writing again. Maybe GAOA will finally go somewhere interesting.

Just read Enchanted Library after seeing that anon mention it. Any recs for other good adventure or just alright long fics? Some shipping stuff in 'em would be a plus.
>>33720656how is the rarity/ts pairing justified in the enchanted library? they seem to have so little in common that it seems purely racial
>>33720841>needing more justification than that
>>33720841Rarity is the one who finds Twiggles after she's spent a long time alone. It just kinda grows from that friendship.
[Pt. 1]Love, Sugar, and Sails (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/87827/love-sugar-and-sails)Pros:>the climax is excellent>the pirate adventure fic stuff is fun, if brief>the worldbuilding's solid, even if it is mostly wasted on zebrasCons:>the Atlantis adventure fic stuff drags on and is way more boring than the political pirate plot>the camels, an original species I'd never seen before in a fanfic, are completely squandered in favor of Zebra Port-au-Prince>the shipping's meh and feels rushed6.5/10. Seriously, the seapony shit was like an anchor to the rest of the story. I guess I just can't get invested in one of the standard adventure fic subplots. Also, Where Loyalty Lies: Honor Guard (https://www.fimfiction.net/story/36254/where-loyalties-lie-honor-guard) was a complete clusterfuck. 2/10, I skipped half the story. Dash spends the whole story fucking around in Africa looking for a cure while the assassination conspiracy plot is both dragged on by incompetent characters and a bizarrely managed government and not even resolved at the end of the 200,000 word story. Those with a petrification TF fetish will like what happens to the main villain, though.>>33696198No, it didn't. No idea why he set part of the climax next to the caldera, after going through the trouble of mentioning all the toxic vents the thing had been creating. It would have really fucked over the climax, though, so I can see why he didn't.>>33703205I've never read them, but given time travel's the main plot device, I'd say it devolves into a huge clusterfuck as the author can't keep the time travel mechanics straight and things spiral from there. AKA "what happens to every time travel story if it goes on long enough."
[Pt. 2]>>33703388>winningverse crossoverDoes it count as a crossover if the thing being crossed with never mentions or references it? Because I don't ever recall Twilight slowly going insane from desperate time travel being a plot point in any of the Winning fics.>>33703488It's a -verse (at least 2,500,000 words long at this point) centered around Cloud Kicker. Most notable is that the stories that don't involve her are the ones that are actually interesting.>>33708892>Why would you still watch the show?Sunk cost fallacy. I'm already at the end. Might as well finish it up. I'm more pissed they squandered Brain's VA on the fucking Secretary of Education than how shit the school is. Whoever's the casting director's now on my list right beneath Haber.>>33709480>are ready for the entire cast to become alicornsPic related.>>33713665The mods would get involved, since they have the IP logs/emails from everyone. You'd have to completely set up a new account on a different IP address (like at a library) and never log into it on your home computer and at that point it's getting way too autistic for just $25.>>33714374>unlimited ficsIt's way, way too much work. You'd have to:>set up a dozen sockpuppet accounts on a dozen different IP addresses that never link>make sure those sockpuppet accounts act like a regular user (favorite different stories, upvote different stories, comment different ways, etc.) for a period of time and don't just log in once, dump the upvotes on your fics and never log in again>actually write the princest smut>>33715239>Not in Romania>the gypsy is advocating scamming someoneKek.>>33716992Lunar Rebellion's good, but has a shit ending. Rise of Firefly's good, but has a weird first person structure. Age of Wings and Steel is good, but you have to deal with the norsewords half of the story.
>>33720958I always liked how that tweet implied Twilight would be the first to die.
>>33721201if that tweet ever implied anything to anyone other than that the show would not span a time long enough for the M6's age to matter, it is their own fault
>>33716498One I want to read, like, yesterday
>>33720603>https://www.fimfiction.net/story/436230/birthday-celebrationCan't say it's amazing, but I think I did decent for my first clop.
>>33720958>since they have the IP logs/emails from everyone. You'd have to completely set up a new account on a different IP address Literally just switch off your router a couple of times.Thing is if you don't make it obvious, the guy isn't gonna have any reason to suspect anything, so he won't flag it for the mods, and I doubt they'll just be scanning the IPs of everyone entering this particular contest as a matter of course.
>>33720958>It's way, way too much work. You'd have to:You know how they have those like farms? I wonder if it might be possible to pay pajeets to sockpuppet on fimfiction for you. It'll probably cost way more than e.g. Facebook likes or whatever, simply because there's not gonna be an established economy of scale, but then you don't need anywhere near thousands of accounts. A couple of dozen accounts posting stories for you would be enough, even the vote manipulation isn't necessary.I wonder if you'd turn a profit doing this. I'm almost certain it's possible.
>>33720958>Does it count as a crossover if the thing being crossed with never mentions or references it?This might just be the dumbest thing you've ever posted>>33721654Pretty sure you can just rent botnet machines to use as proxies if you know where to look

>>33724192>>33723979Now I'm curious, but I don't wanna give it any heat. I'll give it a day and glance through. Has to be garbage with a hidden rating like that.
Is it worth reading some of the top fics of all time, as sorted by the website?
>>33724212Naw, it's only got 79 views, it's perfectly normal that it still has a hidden rating. A views:votes ratio of between 10:1 and 15:1 is pretty normal, and until he gets 10 votes (i.e. 100-150 views), the fact that his rating is hidden doesn't mean anything. Now, everything ELSE about the story, on the other hand, points to trainwreck. No actual trains though, looks like unfortunately>>33724300I just looked at the top ten, and it's a mixed bag. It's got three stories on my favorites list, two that I consider very "blah," and the rest I haven't read.No true shitshow stuff on there, though, so probably not a bad place to try.
>>33724313which stories are which?
>>33724212It gave me my daily dose of wtfThe MC is Declan, a 12 year old kid who has a mild dissociative disorder and sometimes has an episode of rage a bit, whose mother died in childbirth because her doctor gave her botox instead of anesthesia (he was sentenced to life for manslaughter). Despite that, Declan is super popular in elementary school and also super smart and probably super good at sports, though we don't get any examples, he just talks about achievements. He has three friends (one of which "moved to US from China not long after I'd met him") and a gf, and I have to quote>She loved me with all her heart but she couldn’t choose out of me, Drew, Gordon or Willy who to love so she loved them all. I’m sure that because of Alecia’s relationship, she’s gonna make some half children in the future for us due to all the breeding to each of my unidentical friends.Anyway Declan is also a hardcore brony who knows all the words of the Babs Seed song and uses his mom's credit card to buy toys (even though she's been dead for 12 years), but that doesn't matter for now.Declan and his dad visit grandpa in Louisiana, who shows the kid a secret - he has a necklace from the dead mum stashed away (that reminds him of the umbilical cord), along with A FUCKING BOTTLE OF HER BREAST MILK IN A PASSWORD PROTECTED FREEZERDeclan is happy about that, so they warm it up, he drinks a half of it, and they cry a little while oblivious dad is watching NFL. Not much else happens. On the way back home, Declan and dad stop at a gas station in Little Rock, Declan spots the CMCs who got teleported there by Twilight, explains he's not hostile and stashes them in the trunk of the car, so the dad doesn't know. He also feeds them bits of his cheeseburger and fries on the way home. That's it so far.
>>33724420I'm getting Andre flashbacks.
>>33724429This feels like a different kind of weird, also the author can spell, at least. It's almost like a fetish fic in disguise, consider:>I was so proud of my grandfather, he’d managed to collect my mother’s breast milk a few days before I was born and before she died.>I was doing it, I was drinking my own mother’s breast milk and I was doing it with pride.>It was also rather surprising to find out that my grandfather had managed to collect a sample of my mother’s breast milk and keep it stored in a secret password protected freezer for 12 years.>Why couldn’t we just drink breast milk instead of farming some cows and getting their milk?>“Yesterday you told me a secret that meant a lot to me. You collected my mom’s breast milk before she died and a few days before I was born. You froze it in a password protected freezer for over 12 years, and then just yesterday you tell me about this.” do americans really do this?
>>33724467Yes. Americans keep dead women's breast milk frozen for twelve years after her death. Drinking it is a rite of passage, and how one becomes a man.
>>33724467>It's almost like a fetish fic in disguiseMaybe it's just because you hand picked all those lines, but it seems like a pretty flimsy disguise. What plausible excuse would he have for this to be a significant plot point in any serious fic?
>>33724467>Do Americans do this?Drinking breast milk is good and natural for a child, so clearly the answer is no.
>>33724545>What plausible excuse would he have for this to be a significant plot point in any serious fic?
New HiE from Starscribehttps://www.fimfiction.net/story/436202/through-the-auroraWeird shit happens and dude ends up in Equestria as a hippogriff. Omitted from the description, but surprising absolutely no one, he specifically ends up as a female hippogriff.About 50% of Starscribe's male protagonists end up as girls when they get to Equestria, which I guess is exactly what you'd expect if the outcome was random. Yet somehow, not a single one of his female protagonists turns into a dude.
>>33724420>The MC is Declan, a 12 year old kid who has a mild dissociative disorder and sometimes has an episode of rage a bit, whose mother died in childbirth because her doctor gave her botox instead of anesthesia (he was sentenced to life for manslaughter).Oh god, it's real.

>>33722275Neat ideas but somewhere along the way in almost every fic he writes it goes off the wall and your suspension of disbelief is utterly shattered. At least for me.Silver Stars series - HiE, human met his own pony oc and from the ponys pov, its his human oc. Pretty neat idea. They go to a human con or something and the Human gets TF'd into a satyr or something and he's just okay with it. He eventually gets reborn into a pony child and goes through pony life as a pony. Gets a herd. Has like a 800k word dream sequence, not shitting you, where he becomes a batpony alicorn thing. Post dream sequence he wakes up having all this knowledge of world ending spells and shit because he was a batshit insane moon alicorn in the dream, but cant cast any of it because he doesnt have the power to. He gets some in his herd, he loses some in his herd, this is about where I stopped.Uncommon Ground - the whole landmass of north america gets dropped into the world of horseland. Alaskans and Yaks get scared of each other, and fight a bit. They fight a bit, then sign a peace agreement and become friends. The Minotaurs arent convinced of human peace so they form a big alliance to defend against humans. Then the Minotaurs somehow develop the equivalent of modern attack aircraft, have airships, magical energy shielding that blocks torpedoes. Those airships with magic shields also have AA guns capable of taking down fighter jets. The US also sends a whole fleet of naval warships to Minos and then they discover that the Minotaurs have developed a fucking laser defense grid like the goddamn Belkans did with Excalibur in Ace Combat Zero, wiping a whole battlegroup out of the sea. Also it's only been at most, not even a year since the US appeared there, or something. I stopped reading this too, I might drop it entirely.
>>33725077>the whole landmass of north america>The US also sends a whole fleet of naval warships to Minos> not even a year since the US appeared thereHow many ships does the US have in drydock? Like, most of the american military isn't even in the US. What about canada and mexico, are they in there too?
>>33725089I'm not a military vet or anything but I like reading a lot about military history, equipment, etc, that sort of thing. So, I'm not entirely sure how many USN ships are currently in drydock. I'm fairly certain the Navy wouldn't have any active vessels just sitting around doing nothing, in order to be in dock they'd have to be refueling, or getting repaired, retrofitted, refitted, that sort of thing. But one thing I remember specifically in the fic is that a cargo vessel leaves dock and is on the seas when it happens. They lose GPS, as the satellites don't get taken, but they get transported too. So I don't know how many USN ships were taken. I don't remember if the fic ever addresses current numbers of anything either. Also about Canada and Mexico, no, they were left out. Only the United States of America, and Alaska. Which somehow got attached to north Equestria, where it's cold and snowy, and has Yaks.I can rant more about Uncommon Ground, but I don't know if anyone would be interested because I'm not a certified expert on any of this military stuff. And I'm not sure if I want to, because I'd have to read the three most recent chapters or something to catch up to see what else is there and I kinda lost interest after-The Minotaurs managed to create stealth bombers and fighters, make an entire coastal laser defense grid with lasers strong enough to slice a naval warship in half in one beam, create bullet resistant armor, manufacture bombs, enough of those stealth bombers and fighters to make a 2nd Pearl Harbor attack. Manage to create and successfully test an engineered Magical Shield Generator, I can't imagine they just have like 10 dudes in there grunting and struggling to keep shields up, its just not practical. Like I get needing to buff the Minotaur alliance to make the war arc more even, and not a complete stomp in favor of the Humans, but I feel like there could have been other ways to balance it out.
>>33725142>I'm fairly certain the Navy wouldn't have any active vessels just sitting around doing nothingUnless *bureaucracy* keeps them in dock. Either that or public programs and crew stay. Those things need to be crewed, and that crew kind of needs some leave every once in a while. Also to resupply and swap correspondence.
>>33725148Oh! Yeah, that completely slipped my mind.I do know that USN ships do frequently dock at foreign naval bases, or, USN bases at other nations, and they let the crew have a few days of leave then as they're resupplying and doing other stuff. I heard about this from a Navy vet I knew in one of my classes earlier this year, and I'm pretty sure I remember a few stories from TheMightyJingles about this sort of thing, but he was in the UK's Royal Navy.Either way, the US managed to scrounge up a fleet from whatever ships they had, and they decided to throw it at the Minotaur homeland without doing any preliminary recon, at all. If they did, I don't believe it. It's not written anywhere that they did, and they can't possibly have missed an array of coastal defenses, even if the laser batteries were 100% foolproof perfectly concealed, they would have barricades on the beach, stuff to stop landing craft, if you can't literally see the defenses, you can probably see the clues that defenses are there.Man. I really liked the start of this fic, because you had exchange of culture, a little bit of mystery in that suddenly everyone started speaking Ponish, and that some people relearned English, thinking that was Ponish. You had the blending of two vastly different cultures, David Silver touched on the effects that Hollywood had on Equestria, which was neat to read about. The first contact was GREAT, I would actually recommend reading Uncommon Ground just for those scenes. And then maybe stopping. The war stuff really just wasn't all that great for me.
>>33725142>Like I get needing to buff the Minotaur alliance to make the war arc more even, and not a complete stomp in favor of the Humans, but I feel like there could have been other ways to balance it out.One of the more interesting solutions to this problem I saw was in a fic a long time ago. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me, but it's about a human colony that travels to Equus in the 2100s. In it, there's a race that is described as a "failed civilization". Basically they were able to build themselves up to a technology level equivalent to the 1980s Earth, but political or social events (I think they had a civil war?) devastated their society and they haven't been able to put forth the resources necessary to advancing further than that. They had the ability to maintain a few their existing ships and aircraft and even a limited ability to produce more of them if they tried, but not much else. And after centuries of just subsistence, technological innovation was a lost art to them. At their height they had spread all across the planet which is why you see pony civilization use door knobs and things that won't really work for them, they just adopted the infrastructure. Definitely made things play out a lot more interestingly because the only reason they were alive, was because they strongarmed equestria into giving them food aid, and when a new technologically advanced entity emerged it threatened their very existence.
>>33725226I think I've seen the fic you're talking about, but I haven't read it. And I have a read later list of 1600 or something. Hm... I can probably go find it, that does sound pretty interesting.
>>33725142>Like I get needing to buff the Minotaur alliance to make the war arc more evenWhat is asymmetric warfare? There's a big difference between "kill all the combatants" and "kill everyone and destroy everything". The latter will usually only leave you with a pile of rubble, bodies and a PR disaster.
>>33724945Nah, it's a great title for the HiE fans.

Glad you asked: https://www.fur.com/~ollie/rlutrai.html>>33725142>But one thing I remember specifically in the fic is that a cargo vessel leaves dock and is on the seas when it happens. I think this kid lives in texas IRL. He must have only ever been to a Buccee's or something and never saw more than the hour-old burritos. The entire chapter is about driving about halfway home from grandpa's and sonny here interacting with dad. >>33726554It should be mentioned that they waited an hour on the road, because there was a homeless person who didn't wanna move. That's what caused the loud scowling. Also shout out to dad, who's been driving that Cheyenne for 24 hours straight and doesn't plan to stop until they get home.Another shout out to the CMCs who have been hiding in the trunk of the car for a full day because someone told them to, yet they have zero suspicions or any questions.
>>33726644>because there was a homeless person who didn't wanna move.Since the dad didn't just drive around the guy, I'm going to imagine that the homeless man was a true American at maximum possible genetics, which is fat enough to block a two lane road. Presumably the aether surrounded the road to prevent any offroading. Damn liberals.
>>33721461Well, you're in luck, because I forgot about it for a couple of days. At this speed, it will take me the rest of the month to write a fucking oneshot.
