***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the website from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To solve this, save your images out separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the image itself for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

**DEEP SPACE GROUP BUILD**

Build a kit designed primarily for outerspace usage. This means:
>Your entry should reflect its Zero-G environment. Take inspiration from various space-type mobile suits and orbital frames.
>Spacecraft are allowed this time around. This can range from Gundam battleships/mobile armors to Star Wars fighters to flying saucers.
>There's several routes one could go with this build, including a general "space type" mobile suit with lots of verniers/thrusters, a mobile suit designed for space exploration (ie. Stargazer, Woundworts), or a completely alien mobile suit (Vagan stuff, just generally alien designs)
>Just throwing some thrusters onto a Z'Gok won't cut it though, you have to make it feel like your entry would be fit for outer space.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry

START: 07/01/19
END: 10/31/19

>>

Decanting is retarded, just use up the rattle cans or save them for another time. Truly don't understand the appeal of decanting when paint itself is so cheap.

Because spraying through the airbrush gives you much greater control over it and reduces overspray by a heavy amount. I have the primer anyways, I might as well use it in the best way I can.
>>
>>17783774
Then buy paint and primer for your airbrush? You can probably get away with priming with rattle cans anyhow, the old guy at my hobby shop said he does it for conveniences and just uses his airbrush to paint. Hell he said he even uses rattle topcoat.
>>
>>17783774
>overspray
What's that?
>>
>>17783784
Good lacquers can be hard to come by cheap, at least where I live.
>>17783759
Just get 5oz bottles on amazon, they're cheap and the perfect size.
>>
>>17783784
>Then buy paint and primer for your airbrush?
But you see, I already have like 8 full cans of the stuff. So why would I spend more getting more primer and thinner that I would need to blend myself, when I can just poke a hole in what I have?

>>17783786
Rattle cans have one fixed spray size. It's usually pretty wide, overspray is what hits beyond what you're trying to coat.
>>
>>17783795
I guess. Decanting surely must only be for transitioning from rattle to airbrush then? I really do not see the point otherwise.

>>17783802
I would still personally just leave the cans as they are or use them as is, especially primer, but then again I am a pretty wasteful guy that only ever used rattle topcoat.

When it comes to Perfect Grades, what do you prefer?
Mechanical Detail ala PG Zaku II?
Or articulation like the PG Exia?

I'm just curious because I wonder what direction they plan on taking the PG Gundam 2.0. I hope they can strike a balance between the 2 styles, since the detail on the original kit was phenomenal.

Is there any reason to not take a jar of paint, put it in a jar that's 2x as big, and fill the rest with thinner, or measure it out so a thing of tamiya would be 23ml of paint, so you measure out 23ml of thinner and pour that in? It seems like it would make thinning easier since you don't have to try and count in year head or eyeball how much drops of thinner you need, as well as painting since you got your shit all thinned.

Set small goals throughout. Don't look at 200 pieces on a runner and think of doing the whole thing in one push. Work on just the inner frame, or just an arm/leg, etc. Small manageable chunks. I think it's also a good idea to do some detail on the inner frame, like painting joints or pipes. It really helps split up the cut/trim/sand parts, which I think occasionally drags the whole thing down on really part intense builds.

Or give yourself a break on another hobby and come back to it...I think watching the show the suit is from helps too, seeing it "in action"

>>17786019
They work the same as Xuron for a quarter the price, and I can't justify dropping $35 on gundam planet when I only build a kit every other month.
>>
>>17786024
>Gundam planet
No, no no. Okay, stick with the walmart nippers if you must. Drop the 35 to 40 dollars on God Hands. Use the former to remove from the runner, leave a large nub. use the latter to trim down the nub cleanly. For many kits, you can denub them cleanly with just two pairs of nippers.
>>
>>17786024
You guys need to stop falling for GP and USAGundamstore nipper bullshit, don't even consider them. They're garbage and are just overpriced rebranded Chinese shit. If you're ever going to consider dropping that much on nippers then just spend a few more bucks for the real God Hands. The cut quality doesn't even compare between the two for the price.
>>
>>17786046
Doesn't that leave a stress mark on the plastic? I thought the only way to really remove nub/stress marks was to actually paint over it. Doesn't it show under top coat?
>>
>>17786057
God Hand blades are thinner than paper, also way thinner than the knockoffs. That's why they can slice through plastic without leaving a mark if you do it properly.
>>
>>17786057
>>17786063
Though some marks are unavoidable unfortunately. That's the way of life.

Right. I did a quick google and here's the mark a godhand leaves. Better than what I have, sure, but I'll still need to sand it...which scratches the surface and means I'll have to paint, since a top coat won't cover it.

So what's the point?
>>
>>17786081
>here's the mark a godhand leaves
No, I've removed that completely before with my god hands.
>>
>>17786092
Is there a special technique to do so?
>>
>>17786081
You'd be surprised at how many people don't know how actually use God Hands and just straight up flush cut a gigantic nub off and wonder why there's still marks. It's painful watching people on Youtube use it. If the remaining nub is too big it will still stress the plastic when slicing through since the plastic can't flex. You cut it off the runner, leave a 2-3mm nub, then flush cut. There's a 95% chance the thing won't leave a white mark unless the runner was smashed in the box.

Regular nippers will chew the shit out plastic and most likely leave a hole if you try to flush cut it like that.
>>
>>17786095
This is just me, but I gradually remove the nub until it is getting pretty close to flush and then I cut it at a final angle that is pretty much flush with the rest of the piece.
>>
>>17786096
Meant to type 1-2mm nub was typing too fast.

>>
>>17786081
Why do you think you'd HAVE to paint because you sanded a nub? Sand it down pretty much flush than use higher grades of grit sandpaper, it'll pretty much blend in with the plastic at high enough grits and a matte coat will absolutely cover it. Just don't try using like 200 grit sandpaper for plywood, THAT could fuck it up. Personally I'd recommend getting one of those 7(?) In one Emery/nail boards from the beauty section of your local store, start with side like 4, then go up till 7 which is equivalent of like 2000grit.

Reguarding the godhands, and those awful nubs >>17786081 I simply fail to see how that happens. I usually make two cuts with mine, one a bit from the runner, and the other pretty much flush, and it usually comes out really good, but I still touch up with a file.

That's what I do, with a stainless bearing inside. Have not yet run into a case of paint "going bad" and you'll get a consistent result on the whole kit

Usually 15-18 is enough with low paint flow.

>>

Mark softer does exactly what it says, it makes a waterslide soft, and so it conforms to the model extremely well, making it look like a miniature painted decal instead. Where you see silvering on the waterslide, poke it with a pin and dab a bit of mark softer into the hole, it'll make the bubble conform to the model.

>>
>>17786583
I don't want to damage anything if I'm not ready for it. I also picked up a $5 dollar mastergrade FAZZ sealed. They were sitting in the back of his garage collecting dust. Story is his grandson collected gunpla but then moved out several years ago leaving it behind.

There was also an opened Wing Zero Custom Perfect Grade box. I looked inside and apparently his grandson just cut the pieces off the tree and did no sanding. There was a rough looking completed Wing Zero PG inside. The grandson just snapped all the pieces together. He said I could have it for $5. I told him I would think about it. He gave me his phone number if I change my mind.

Does anyone know how much effort it would take to undo a Perfect Grade model build? Anyone with experience doing it? Do I need any specific tools to do it? His grandson just snapped everything together and was like 12 years old when he did it.

Thoughts?
>>

>>
>>17786679
For 5 dollars you should buy it, anon, easy choice. It won't be hard to fix any damage.
>>
>>17786702
I've never taken apart gunpla before. I've never had to do someone else's work. I mostly just build 1/144s as a hobby. Wouldn't it be difficult to get into the seams and seperate the pieces? Wouldn't they break easily trying seperate them after connecting them
>>
>>17786729
Not really. Some might give you a bit of trouble given the age of it, but all you have to do is slip in x-acto blade between them very carefully and pry it apart. Have to be careful because you can nick the part doing it; you can use the part that connects into the knife and has no blade to be more careful about it. If you have any other kind of very thin metal prying instrument that works too.

It's not very tough and if you break a piece, you paid 5 dollars for it. Anything you break can be fixed. This is a 100+ USD kit you're getting for 5 bucks anon, you can just sit on it until you have a little more experience under your belt to tackle it. Shit, you can resell it on ebay and get a solid 30-50 bucks even in the condition it's in now. No reason to not get it.

If you're in the US, there's a middleman who'll go through Bandai's parts/runner replacement ordering process for you, though stocks are always pretty spotty: https://gundamreplacementparts.wordpress.com/service-fee/
Failing both of those, you could always replace them with some after-market parts. Bandai do their own replacement hands (Builders Parts MS Hand), as do Kotobukiya as part of their M.S.G. line. They won't be a perfect match, but they're a pretty decent replacement.
Last port of call if you're desperate is Yahoo Auctions. There are a few sellers that sell broken and second-hand Gunpla/parts through it (tagged as junk/'ジャンク').

thats just when it was first released, gunpla have constant reprints and production runs, even the old stuff from the original 1979 Gundam series. that MG is probobly no more than three years old unless you found it in a flea market basement.
>>
>>17787624
It's more likely than not a reprint, Bandai regularly reprints almost everything so that could have been done as recent as the last couple of years. Even if it is an from older batch, worst case scenario for the decals will be slight discolouration of the lighter colours, whites going kind of tan etc., which you can sort by leaving them in the sun for a while.

I really don't mean to sound like a certain someone, but doesn't APS plastic become brittle if you paint on it with lacquer? How do you prime it then, because primer is lacquer. How do you even topcoat it, because topcoat is also lacquer?
>>
>>17787895
Enamels (oil based paint) is what causes plastic to become brittle (plastic absorbs oils and bloat)

Lacquer paint DISSOLVES plastic. However, when you're applying it with a spray-can or airbrush (properly), the solvent evaporates as it hits the plastic surface, safely leaving behind the pigment and binder. This momentarily dissolving of the plastic surface also etches it, causing the paint to adhere stronger.

This is why you don't see anyone recommend handbrushing lacquer paint. It CAN be done but if you're not careful about the amount you slap on the model, it'll dissolve into a gummy mess.
>>
>>17787933
Thanks.
>>
>>17787895
I'm the one who painted the model in the OP image. If you look closely at the yellow parts they're damaged from soaking in lacquer thinner for 40 minutes. If they can survive that I'm sure your gunpla will be fine.

>I thought ver ka kits and especially unicorns were supposed to be top quality

Not really, technically the only difference is that Katoki was supposedly involved in every process of the development, like the decal design etc. But older ver. Kas don't come with waterslides, and I guess at some point they realized this was pretty dumb since you were wasting his designs on shitty stickers no one would use.
Also, he usually likes to include gimmicks and design choices that push the engineering to its limit, and this can hinder the final product if current technology can't live up to his ideas.

But can you use the 30 Minute Mission weapons packs with all the “frames” like if I get the Alto but buy the Portanova weapons kit, do the hands hold all the weapons and do the weapons kits have all the required bits to make the full weapons? I think these sets would be perfect for a home brew Tabletop RPG I am cooking up.
>>
>>17789052
Yes. The kits are made with compatibility and customization in mind
>>
>>17789055
That is what I figured thanks.

Yes. Effectively as a skeleton I have cannibalized End of the World by Fantasy Flight for “Pilot” stats. And am using a hybrid Warhammer Underworlds and Warcry for combat. The players will be able to purchase and add on all the weapons kits over the course of the campaign to add on to their unit as they rank up. After we play a campaign and all the hard testing is done I may have a write up I could share, but it will be fast and loose with stating stuff up and I would love to make it more attractive to have some crazy looking customs instead of min/maxing stats to “win” combat.

>like if I get the Alto but buy the Portanova weapons kit, do the hands hold all the weapons
Yes
Also the 30MM hands will work with most HG weapons too
also they have a bunch of 3mm holes on them that can work with any accessories you have that have a 3mm peg

>do the weapons kits have all the required bits to make the full weapons?
not all at once unless you have more altos or porta novas
the alto weapon set shows three gun types, but it's just the same base gun with three different barrels (one is the same kind you get with regular altos) and two types of scopes (again one is the same as the regular)
so because of the one gun base, you can only make one gun with it at a time, unless you buy more altos and use the gun base that comes with them
you have more options with the melee weapons because you get the regular weapon handle, a staff, and a weapon hand so you can use all 3 melee weapons at once and they have a bit more connectivity with each other going on
>>

I can't speak for the Alto gun pack but the Portanova gunpack comes with all the parts for the basic gun and sword hilt. The weapons pack is mostly just add-ons for those two and one or two extra melee weapon hilts.

Idk if I should get Earthree of the red one. The Earthree is the main suit and will be getting more focus, thus making me like it more. Plus it has a nicer flying nimbus mode. But the red suit's Core Gundam has much nicer colours. I'm limited in my options because my brothers is going to get one them too. But he won't make up his mind because he wants to see what the MC's next suit will look like. Also I don't expect the weapon packs to reach my country.
You know, perhaps you could kitbash the Veetwo with the chick's green MS.

Color separation means how well the kit has the colors separated between parts and molded in the right colors.
Bad color separation usually means either a stickerfest, like IBO's 1/144 Gusion Rebake Full City, or something like SDs that don't even have that sometimes.
Good separation is usually found on any modern MG or RG. Standout example that comes to mind would be ZZ Ver Ka.
