Amaris was pretty smart though. The biggest retard there was Karensky himself. He could've cut the fat asshole down before he gained any momentum but he just had to be the biggest moralfaggot around and let the wound fester.

Degwin had a better plan. Amaris was just like "I'm gonna shoot Cameron in the face and sit in his chair and everyone will worship me. Rim Worlds, ho!" like everyone already didn't loathe the Periphery lords like Amaris to begin with.

Yeah, the Inner Sphere has its own set of designations to identify Clanner shit, Mad Cat as a designation being the product of an interesting little incident in the lore where the targeting computer of one of the first guys to run afoul of it couldn't determine if it was locked onto a Marauder (MAD) or a Catapult (CAT), since the Timberwolf as the Clans called it happens to share a close resemblance to a mashup of the two aforementioned mechs.

Though, if I recall right at least one of the follow up models in the Timberwolf lineage was in-universe marketed under the Mad Cat name hoping to appeal to Inner Sphere tastes, though this would be way later on at a time when a chunk of the Clans decide to fuck off from the homeland and bunk in with the Inner Sphere, I think.
>>
>>17715366
Yeah, the Diamond Sharks largely sold the Mad Cat MkII to the Inner Sphere. Some other Clans fought Trials for them but weren't exactly buying them in bulk.
>>
>>17715847
And the MkII was a freaking Multirole monster
which cant be said for the mark III
>>
>>17715850
So the MkII is an actual BT design? I thought it was made up by Microsoft for MW4.
>>

>TRO 3067: 2002

Possibly. The Mauler might have as well. They had to retcon it down to being an older less successful predecessor called the Daboku though IIRC.
They even gave it a neat bit of lore where it had a fault where if you hit the center torso hard enough, the head ejection-pod would launch automatically.
Which was how the BT toy worked.

That show also had a Sloth BA toy, and that feels hella early for that thing as well.

If I recall part of it was the more formalized reports documenting the "cargo cult" phenomenon coming out at the time. It may also partially be due to the fact that technology was beginning to get into areas where explaining things to laymen as "imagine a balloon and something bad happens" was no longer as practical as it once was; so technology was becoming more like magic boxes that needed to be properly appeased lest they get angry. Add this to any sort of post-apocalypse setting and boom, techno-religion.

Yeah, I was gonna mention this. 40k definitely took inspiration from Dune, which had a secretive order monopolizing FTL technology. While I don't recall if the Guild was religious, when people think of secretive orders it's not that far a jump to a secretive priesthood, so in the wake of Dune we had stuff like 40k's navigator houses and techpriests, Battletech and its Comstar shenanigans, etc.

Tell me more about Clan Ghost Bear. Winning control of a planet by winning a football game is exactly my kind of ridiculous.
>>
>>17745482
...What?
>>
>>17746398
>Situated deep within the Draconis Combine, Sheliak was a minor planet with few resources. In fact, it was of such little military value that even during the Clan Invasion, when Sheliak suddenly found itself near the front lines, the DCMS did not assign any troops to defend it. Thus in December 3051, when Clan Ghost Bear invasion forces appeared over Sheliak, the planetary government was in a state of panic and agreed to a desperate plan proposed by football commissioner Jimmy "Straight Jim" Lorne.
>Confident that the Clans knew nothing of the game of football, a challenge was issued by Sheliak's government. If the Ghost Bears won a game against the Sheliak Professional Football League, they would claim the planet; if they lost, then Sheliak would remain free. Unfortunately for both Sheliak's population and their football players, the Bears not only knew the rules of the game, but deployed a team of eight-foot-tall Elementals from the 68th Striker Cluster's 78th Elemental Support Binary. During the match at Kurita Stadium, the Sheliak All-Star team was utterly smashed and lost the game, 84 to 3. During the postgame show the planetary government formally ceded control of Sheliak to the Ghost Bear Clan.

This is way more based than anything I've ever seen of Battletech lore. From what I'd read, Kerensky's people prior to the formation of the Clans beat the shit out of each other so bad it made the Succession Wars look like Girl Scout troops squabbling over cookie turf. That they still managed to keep hold of things like football is nothing short of awesome.
>>
>>17746589
Football is largely an elemental muscleperson sport. For everyone else, there's Clan Rules lacrosse.
>>

>You're supposed to play as a Clanner when you run them.
>You're supposed to play as a Clanner
>You're supposed to
Therein lies the problem. NO ONE plays Clantech "the way it's supposed to be played."
It's either:
>Zellbrigen out the window
Or:
>Sneaky Spheroids captured Clantech intact
>>
>>17713142
I am constantly amused at how the Battletech history paints a picture of Kerensky as a "strategic genius," a "dutiful soldier" and how he was distraught by having to fight the civil war, having to fight Star League states/citizens.

It amuses me because the history clearly shows that he was unprepared for war (which is a criminal failing in a military leader), emotionally unbalanced, reactionary, utterly inept.

Personally I loved the first Crescent Hawks game, but I never played enough of the second one to get deep into it. I found a hard copy of the 'Powerhits - Battletech' collection for dirt cheap in the late 90s. It had both games as well as the very first Mechwarrior game. Which ran on a freaking 386 processor. It's a real bitch to get it to run on modern hardware. But it sure was fun. I think you can find it as abandomware over on the Internet Archive, but you might have to poke around to find the user manual since it had an image they you need to reference as a form of primitive copy protection.

>>
>>17763103
If they're the DOS versions you can use DosBox, as usual: https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/GAMES:MechWarrior_2
There's also something called MechVM. Apparently it's for MW2, but forum posts mention using it for GBL and Mercs too: http://www.mechvm.org/

If it's the 3dfx version, just use nglide. I played Turok 1 with it last year and it works fine.
>>
>>17763103
>>17727814
>design a mech where you have to hit it's crotch to destroy it.
the fuck?!!
>>
>>17763138
Mech2 hates everything from win8 and onwards due to outdated DLL, someone needs to hack and update MW2SHELL.DLL into the new kernel.
Mech2.org has the instructions but the guy who used to do that disappeared.

All of Mechwarrior 2's problems are caused by one single DLL
>>
>>17763219
Why's that? Heavy Gear 1 and Interstate 76 which both run on the same engine have little issue working on Win8/10.
>>
>>17763403
Because both uses updated code, Mech 2 started as a DOS game converted to Windows.
>>
>>17763415
So it's DOS junk that's causing all the issues with MW2 and Windows?

It seems that the company that held the rights to use only the packaging design of the plastic model broadly misinterpreted that. As they thought that anything on the packaging could be used elsewhere. So a lot of different designs appeared to have been replicated. >Prototype [BT, AS, SBF]

>This Quirk represents the many issues associated with technological equipment which is still going through its development and shakedown process. Components on such platforms tend to be less resilient and lack redundancy compared to components from full manufacturing production lines. Units with the Prototype Quirk have a significantly increased chance of suffering Critical Hits as a result of rolls for critical damage[46][47][33].
This is bullshit, everyone knows prototypes are superior to the production versions.

Yeah but you are also forgetting that the Daboku, which is the model that the one from the cartoon was retconned to also wasn't loaded with ANCIENT LOST TECHNOLOGY from one of those always popular GOLDEN AGES OF TECHNOLOGY when it was built in 3039. It's only when they put in that TECHNOLOGY into the Daboku that it becomes the Mauler.

Tobia's time on Earth allowed him to make friends with a few people with smaller Mobile Workers, labor types, and one of them had a monkey Tobia was nice to. The monkey ended up jumping in one of the Mobile Workers in a panic when the Jupiter folks arrived and saved Tobia by distracting them.

I legitimately do not know what FASA were thinking with that build. I mean, it would have been more useful if they used that space for CASE and ammo for the LRM's. Or lasers. All of the lasers. Or AC's of acceptable caliber. Which FYI is literally anything other than the 40+ year old joke that is the AC/2.

What's even weirder is that somebody thought the 2R, which DOWNGRADES everything else in order to upgrade those things to Ultra-AC2. WHY.

The 3R at least swaps them out for a pair of LBX-10's, but then loses the Large Lasers.

It's just a really awkward mech that looks cool, but is in fact not worth the hype. I don't think Luthien Armour Works have ever made a decent Assault Mech in their life.
>>
>>17768896
There should honestly be 4 main ACs: Light, Medium, Heavy and Assault with 5/10/15/20 damages. Not sure where AC-2s would be but I always envisioned them as mainly flak throwers and 1t to 6t.

>playing MW2 again
>second Wolf mission has you chasing down trainee pilots as part of a hit and run attack to put forward the illusion of force projection and wipe strategic targets
I was surprised at how impactful that was. Fuck Novas, though. Novas in MW2 eat laser fire like candy.
>>
>>17789553
>Mission 3
>Go into a Jade Falcon city alone, scan a building, and destroy it
>If you decide to take on every mech a trio of Elementals with gauss rifles spawns and fucks your day right up
>you're expected to go in hard and fast and get the job done
This game really was playing with concepts that were ahead of its time.
>>
>>17789658
>Elementals
Summoners. Not Elementals. A trio of Summoners with gauss rifles spawn in and wreck your shit. I get all the clan names mixed up. Thors. A trio of Thors.
>>
>>17789660
Was about to say, what fucking Elemental is beefy enough to sling a Gauss rifle around?
>>
>>17789665
It was either gauss rifles or the game glitched and randomly blew my mech up. I'm actually unsure as I keep running into weird massive damage/no damage bugs in these older games. I got one leg off a Thor, started backpedaling, and exploded.
>>
>>17789683
Can confirm, though. It is possible to run in with a Firemoth, scan the power converter, destroy it, and then flee for your life being chased by a dozen mechs as PPCs zoom by you in every direction. And that's something I'll give the game credit for. That's organic choice in play style.
>>
>>17789553
>Fuck Novas, though. Novas in MW2 eat laser fire like candy.
When you have enough lasers to explode from your own alpha strike, what do you have to fear from anyone else's?
>>
>>17789737
Wasn't there a mission like that in MW4 Mercs? I remember doing it one time super sneaky with the Thanatos, and then one time just blowing the shit out of everything with the Mektek Annihilator.

Here's a question. I've been playing all of the games. And there's something I've noticed that's frustrated the hell out of me.
Have ANY of the Mechwarrior games had a leg-facing camera option? Any of them? Has any game had the sense to give you a camera following your momentum so you can steer while engaging in torso twist?
>>
>>17791114
>Have ANY of the Mechwarrior games had a leg-facing camera option?
Mevhwarrior 3 had something similar where the camera would be on the side of the mech. Then mechwarrior 4 had front facing cameras but those are probably not what you want.

The best 3rd person camera is MechWarrior 2 as you can rotate it 360°. However MW2 has the weekest sense of scale and no infantry to compare.

>MW3, Wolf Mission 6, Sable Flame
>you're tasked with securing a senor array dome (read: lunar base)
>game warns you that shooting at the dome could breach it and lead to all the air going away killing everyone
>after you wipe out the initial wave of defenders, 2 Jade Falcon dropships come down and 2 stars of mechs deploy
>if they get close to the dome they'll begin actively opening fire on it
>the game doesn't give you any prompts, it's all about observation
>it's also possible to destroy both dropships, and this is a tertiary objective, but it requires overwhelming firepower given the tight time allowance of the mission
I'll restate. Mechwarrior 2 was ahead of its time with regard to presentation and tasking the player with things. In a few years you'd start seeing objectives in games more actively where they'd scream at you about it over coms and aim for cinematic presentation. Seeing a hellbringer from the second star opening up on the dome trying to breach it without a word being said about it was better than anything I've seen in the game vein. Just the wordless attempt to commit war crimes.

>>
>>17800565
Most MW titles are abandonware meaning that because of the games being in a legal clusterfuck no one can really sell them. As such you really can't be punished for downloading them online. There's a MechWarrior quadrology online that you can use for Windows 7 that comes with MechWarrior 1-4.
>>
>>17800565
>>17800653
Yes, it should be on most abandonware websites. There is a mektek somewhere online, but they all work. I don't remember having to do any magic to have it run on Windows 10.

>For Operation BULLDOG, the Second An Ting Legion invaded Irece which, at the time, was defended by Clan Nova Cat's Fifth Garrison Cluster. Control of the planet was decided in a drinking contest; the Draconis Combine representative Ewan Paltrow won and Clan Nova Cat relinquished the world

I'm not 100% on the lore, but the rest of Clan Nova Cat had joined the new SLDF and the drinking game would've given the remnant garrison the chance to rejoin their clan in an honorable manner
