is this post ironic
One of the things I really love about the new Thunderbirds series is how they've massively expanded the use of space as a setting. The original series had like, what, three episodes using Thunderbird 3? In the new series we've got several space stations in Earth orbit, fleets of civilian spaceships, moon surface stations, moon orbit stations, space junkyards, space hotels, a mining operation on Mercury, a colony on Mars, even a documentary expedition on Europa.

Hell, Thunderbird FIVE has been taking active part in rescues!

That looks cool, pardon me for asking but where's it from?
Galaxy-class starships were ABSOLUTELY built with combat in mind. They had an extra bridge specifically for just that!

>The Galaxy-class was equipped with twelve phaser banks, distributed in phaser arrays at various points along both hulls. One array was located on the dorsal of the battle section and could only be used following a separation. Multiple phaser beams could be fired simultaneously from a single array. (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels") There were also fore and aft torpedo launchers on the engineering section. (TNG: "Conundrum") Each launch tube was capable of firing at least five photon torpedoes simultaneously, each torpedo capable of being independently targeted. (TNG: "The Arsenal of Freedom", "Yesterday's Enterprise") In the 2360s, Galaxy-class ships typically carried about 250 photon torpedoes. The torpedo launchers were also capable of launching probes. The Galaxy-class also carried antimatter mines and supported a high-capacity deflector shield grid. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part II", "Conundrum")
Dang, I have all these cool spaceships I wanted to post, but none of them are civilian grade. Bah.
I'd give it a technical pass. It wasn't "specifically built for combat": it was intended for multiple roles, with combat being a secondary role. However, the purpose of the OP is clearly to prevent the same ships from being posted over and over again, and if anything fits into that category, it's Trek.

SSSA liners from ARIA, absolutely civilian
It was a mostly civilian ship for long range expeditions with self defence in mind, no match for a romulan warbird or a klingon cuiser.
Combat was quite obviously not its primary objective as, while armed decently overall, it had most of its volume used for stuff that is pointless in a warship.
The later Defiant and Souvereign class ships where warships, the galaxy class not so much.
Although one could count the later dominion-war era Galaxy-class ships as makeshift warships since they where stripped of many non-essential systems and recived upgraded weapons as well as shields.
There is no such thing as a "lightly armed starship"
You have strong shields/armor to protect yourself from hypervelocity impacts, be it micrometeroids, railgun shots or beam weapons of some sort.
You are able to acellerate yourself and a payload to a good percentage of lightspeed, be it cargo, a relativistic slug, antimatter or even kamikaze.
There is a good chance you have a powerfull laser/maser for communication and possibly the ability to warp spacetime, the laser/maser could seriously harm a ship when running at full power and a tight beam and warping spacetime leaves so many options.

You could take down capital ships with the right tactics, even when not having any "real weapons" onboard.

sometimes I think spaceships are the superior visual element, the very pinnacle of design and flare and proficiency in the craft.
There is such a wealth of design and creativity. You can draw from such a varied history of real world naval vessels like subs and boat, airplanes and jets, ocean life such as fish or whale or squid or shark. There are "natural" spaceships from converted asteroids, Fanciful magic or so advanced it might as well be magic designs. Alien ships that are alien by nature and don't fit our conceptions of spacecraft.
The well from which you can draw from is limitless in ways normal manned mecha design cannot even hope to come close to. This doesn't even bring the different weaponry and functionality that ships can bring to the table.
I fucking love spaceships.

First, any of those are covered by OP >>17544746 or this notarized addendum >>17547540
Second, a car can be used to as a kamikaze it doesn't make it a "heavily armed battletank". If it take a series of minor miracle and incompetent enemies for this to happen (unaware of what are the most basic & fundamental "tactic" known to mankind), then you failed trying to be a smartass.
Looking at airliner regulation your civilian spaceship could be hardcoded to be incapable of any maneuver that leave it on an impact course, or be incapable of using its communication maser unless it identify and aim at the proper receiver on the target.
To the point that if you still manage to do damage, it will be by using a military ship with full clearance to push it like a projectile.

Destroying a warship doesn't make a ship as powerful as one.

HW2 made the Bentusi more interesting as an hyper advanced civilization, better than an upgrade shop.
HW2 did more to downgrade them to flying plot exposition machines than really build them up as any sort of 'hyper-advanced civilization'. Whereas previously they were players in the galactic council and a functioning nation in their own right, they were reduced to a single prophecy-spewing ship that existed solely to commit suicide and gift the Hiigarans a precursor relic that would have been completely safe from Makaan had they done literally anything else.
And don't get me started on the whole 3 hyperspace core bullshit, which is its own dumpster-fire of a plot mistake.

Homeworld 1 plot was a pretext for a simple single space fleet and a gamey shop for upgrade.
Homeworld 2 is the one who rebuilt a proper setting over the mess left by HW1 and "Cataclysm", adding technologies that explain the power discrepancy and a sense of mythological awe over the history lost through time.

You can like the design and HW2 have its flaws but you are a retard if you can't accept improvement.

>a precursor relic that would have been completely safe from Makaan
Sure letting the good guys dies and giving Makaan more time to secure power and reverse engineer all the ancient technologies and defense would have solved their problems. The mythological aspect doesn't even exclude them finding other cores. Even Sajuuk is just ONE relic of a greater civilization who built foundry ship far bigger. It's made obvious that the 3 cores were just the ones powering the Foundry ship who would naturally forge more (how do you think it moved around?).
If your autism is triggered by the idea of a triforce I can't help you. Plenty of real technology have this sort of multi core synergy.
>Using solar power when you've got four perfectly good nuclear reactors right there attached to the ship.

I'd hesitate to call the addition of the Pre-Exile Hiigaran history a complete improvement. I more preferred it when the history was unknown and it was up in the air whether the Hiigarans deserved to be exiled to Kharak or not, but I did like the inclusion that the ancient Hiigarans were warmongers and did end up deserving their treatment by the Taiidan later down the line.

>Letting the good guys die and give Makaan more time to reverse engineer ancient tech.
Makaan's entire powerbase is built on the claim that he is the Sajuuk-Khar, which necessitates him being able to unite the Trinity and activate the ship. Had the remaining Bentusi chucked the core into a black hole, played keep-away through constant far-jumping, or even left the galaxy with it entirely (which was technology they possessed) then Makaan would be unable to back his claims, which leaves him a failed religious leader that can still be beaten thru conventional tactics and not a nigh-messianic figure that can do no wrong to his followers. Furthermore, there's no guarantee the Foundry (or any other progenitor relic) has the ability to build more cores at all, but if they are still able, it shocks me that no-one else decided to make a run for Karos and do exactly what you suggested in the 10,000 years between the Bentusi finding the first and Makaan finding the third.

What I really take exception to is two things: that the ancient Hiigarans were able recover and smuggle the second core to Kharak without anyone becoming suspicious or even checking for the core on Angel Moon or the departing Exile fleet, and that only progenitor tech at the present time is able to FarJump, despite the fact that it's explicitly stated in the original manual that the Kushan reverse-engineered the Khar-Toba's own drive module for the Mothership and just scaled it up twelve times to compensate. Retconning this makes the progenitors essentially the reason for the Hiigaran return rather than their own ingenuity.

As religions goes, only having one or two of the KNOWN godlike core wouldn't have made Makaan any weaker. I will argue that having a religious quest to keep looking for would preserve his reign longer than having all core and his follower asking "Now what?" with free time to plan a coup.
Having the Bentusi "chuck the relic of a godlike lost tech into a black hole" you would only end up with the smartest civilization stuck at "short jump" speed and ready to be killed by Makaan while he take over the galaxy and find another core.
Plus those god damn cores are so durable with their safety feature they LOOK sentient, I can imagine one jumping away tweeting "NOPE"

>Furthermore, there's no guarantee the Foundry (or any other progenitor relic) has the ability to build more cores at all, but if they are still able,
Going over the obvious mystical parable this is still a world where science exist. The progenitor had all reason to build as many cores as they needed, especially the Foundry ship (their own mothership) that outmass Sajuuk. The most common fanfiction and over used plot is them leaving ONE of their recent "Sajuuk-class" ship as bait for other civilizations.

>it shocks me that no-one else decided to make a run for Karos and do exactly what you suggested in the 10,000 years between the Bentusi finding the first and Makaan finding the third.
Easily justified. It's not that nobody tried, it's that nobody succeeded and came back alive.
Remember what defend them? The keepers who are either a grossly overpowered npc of an unfinished game or the proof that progenitors knew to make smaller ship with amazing hyperspace core and sensor.
And only those with an hyperspace core (+ oracle) would have been able to reach most of those place.

>that the ancient Hiigarans were able recover and smuggle the second core to Kharak without anyone becoming suspicious or even checking for the core on Angel Moon or the departing Exile fleet
Explained in the document, no one knew where to look except the Hiigaran, they left so fast everyone else could have believed the core was still "somewhere else" and if you take the new retcon from Desert of Kharak, the Hyperspace core defended them by warping unsuspecting attackers elsewhere. Which IS after all the core ability of that drive.

>and that only progenitor tech at the present time is able to FarJump, despite the fact that it's explicitly stated in the original manual that the Kushan reverse-engineered the Khar-Toba's own drive module for the Mothership and just scaled it up twelve times to compensate. Retconning this makes the progenitors essentially the reason for the Hiigaran return rather than their own ingenuity.
The first game leave bigger holes in the power ratio than any plothole of Homeworld 2. You were asked to assume a few clans of refugees that spent millennia reinventing the wheels are fit to survive and escape a galactic Civilization, even corrupt, (buying some upgrade from the Bentus mid-game shop).
Retconning them the means to Farjump (and DoK retconning them getting fresh spaceship wrecks) evened the odds while also setting a mystical plot more interesting than "Blue vs Red".
You can even retcon the Kadeshi as being incapable of Farjump but learning to make the hyperspace inhibitor the Bentus used on them.
A cool challenge is to retcon the ugly hacker-ship as an oracle.

We all know the true ingenuity of the Hiigaran is to SALVAGE EVERYTHING.

So I am asking there because I know that people that post in this thread have played it: Is Children of a Dead Earth good? What is the gameplay like? Should I expect something like Homeworld (RTS)? I have seen some videos but I can't really grasp what really the game is about. Sorry for off-topic.

It's good if you are looking for a game like ChoDE.

Sandbox with realistic physics and ship building tool, there's some solo mission to give you a real-space buzz, but beyond you have to engineer to get the full potential.

It's definitely not a RTS (by definition as you control timewarp), consider it more like a simulation. The first missions you get are mostly a tutorial teaching you the control but also some orbital mechanic that are unfortunately poorly understood by common people. Note that if you played Kerbal Space Program you are no longer a "common person".

You can control a fleet but don't expect to click a ship and click the position were it have to go, what you control is their Vector, they won't be stationary relative to a target unless you tell them to do the maneuver that will achieve that.
Sometime it can be tricky despite the orders choice.
The pace is deceptive, it's slow but everything can go irreversibly wrong (or good) in an instant. Such is space warfare.

By mid-game you get to design your own ships/fleet. By then you'll learn that while the physic of the game is top notch, not having Military-grade ship-AIs restrict what you can do. Late game unlock the design of submodule (making custom engine, guns, bomb).

Which is why it's more of an engineer sandbox than a strategy game.

This sounds like a good game. Is it on steam?

Also, here's a cool pic.

Children of a dead Earth

Last Exile had plenty of wonderful ideas. A shame it went haywire midway and gave birth to a very bad fanservive sequel.
I won't say we need more series like that because we need much better series than that.
We need more “realistic” spaceships. I have to find the thread I started in the archives.

Ripped off Xenogears, at least in base background story.
They didn't turn on their gellar fields, Slaanesh got to them.
Anyone got more space freighters? Realistic or no. They're comfy as fuck.
This thing looks like a decommissioned warship.

Because of you I quickly read the Wikipedia for that plot.
Honestly they are far different enough to be considered completely separate. There's far enough story involving ancient astronaut.
Not trying to defend "Last Exile" thought, it was a waste of good ideas and magnificent graphic.

Here you go.

It's from Freelancer and it is a warship, so that anon was in infraction of Article 1 to 1 plus corollary, forbidding ship explicitly meant for combat.

I assume you are talking about how transhumanism topic address the genetically hardcoded disgust for furry?
It's annoying how the biggest hurdle to get SF set in a far future is that it would likely squick baseline human.
