*READ THE GUIDE*

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the website from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To solve this, save your images out separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the image itself for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

IGBX: Immortal Group Build

Build a mecha focused around vehicular racing for a high-speed race across the galaxy!

>What constitutes a racing mecha?
A mobile suit with a focus on speed/agility, with or without some sort of waverider/MA mode. This doesn't mean bulky mechs aren't eligible, it just needs to retain a sense of speed to it. All racing components must be incorporated within the mobile suit itself, and not be an entirely separate entity (IE, you can't make a mobile suit and a motorcycle, but you can make a mobile suit with parts that turns it into a motorcycle OR a mobile suit that has armorparts that turns a motorcycle)
>Is weaponry/vehicular combat allowed?
Yes, but ideally you should probably stick to hard-mounted weaponry instead of handheld weapons (Not that you can't include handheld ones, it's your build). The lighter the better in this case.
>I can't come up with an idea for this theme, what's some good inspiration?
IGPX, Eureka Seven, Redline, WipeOut, and F-Zero are good starting points for futuristic racing machines. If you have a favorite race car livery then that can work as a starting point as well.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry

If you think you can just pick up an airbrush and have perfect paint every time as soon as you start, then I know you're a snapfag.
>>
Besides Graze Ein what are some other plamo with Obari proportions?
>>
>>17139314
The Amememiya Transformers kits.
>>
>>17139294
I don't have Qua[T], but Tallgeese is pretty solid, then again, I use plenty of plastic cement during builds. Zeta has been by far the worst RG for me, the RX-78 was a little janky (I didn't use plastic cement on it). OO Raiser is good too, but needs a display stand because the backpack causes it to do the splits.
>>
>>17139294
The main body itself is fine but yeah, the shield connection could've been more secure.
I had to fix that myself by replacing the peg with a thicker piece of runner.
>>
>>17139309
I agree with you, but seam lines are kinda a big deal when spray painting. it might not look noticeable on the normal model, but when you add the extra thickness with the paint, I really shows up.
Also, I can understand that airbrushing is a pain to learn, but picking a FSS model when learning probably wasn't the best idea. I'm sure when this guy fully learns how to airbrush and all the other stuff, he can just go redo the paint and fix the seam lines.

Small update on Space Diver Cosmonaumi, so far everything is going well, the seam on the side is hidden, the face is still swappable, and the visor will raise up once i get the hinge made. The only road block ive hit is that i think i need a dremel tool to get into to of the smaller places, and im hesitant on spending the money for one since the Jegan D-Type just went up for preorder

Oh i also painted my Jegan about a week ago, and im not crazy about it. Didnt help that I didnt have the colors I needed in lacquers, but i wasnt gonna fuck with using Vallejo again. Maybe I shoulve gone with maroon and dark brown instead of orange and grey-teal
>>
>>17140196
It looks too flat. Is it unfinished?
>>
>>17140182
the boobs are mostly chopped off for how it started. It's trying to shape it properly thats tricky since pressure suits are pretty undefined. I'm focusing on the helmet right now
>>
>>17140196
It just lacks contrast, the shade of gray clashes hard with the orange and white.
>>
>>17140203
It's in a limbo since im not crazy about it, but I dont really care to shade or weather it. I still need to figure out how to paneline painted kits since all i have right now are acrylics and lacquers, and i learned the hard way that acrylic washes dont work so well over Mr Super Clear
>>
>>17139345
I was hoping I wasn't the only one who found the shield connection finnicky. Love the rest of the kit though
>>
>>17140225
Gloss coat then panel line over that
>>
>>17140239
Yeah thats what I did, but you cant use rubbing alcohol to clean the lines because it eats through both acrylic and lacquer
>>
>>17140255
Use enamel panel line wash to line and lighter fluid to clean
>>
>>17140263
Do they come in enough colors, though? Or should I go with gundam markers? I'm very much not a fan of using only black, brown, and grey
>>
>>17139667
They're the exact same, it's just shot from a higher angle
>>
>>17140273
You could always create a wash by taking any enamel paint and thinning it to shit with lighter fluid.
>>
>>17140273
Buy a high quality oil paint and and some odorless turpentine/white spirits and make a oil wash
>>
>>17140354
oils are fuckin expensive tho, like i bought a small tube of magenta once for almost $20

I get a big high quality winsor and newton artist oil paints for 9 dollars a piece, i think it will be cheaper in the long run than enamels.

Both of those kits are straight builds by two reviewers (schizophonic9 and hacchaka), they leave the nubs there to show people buying the kit where they'd show up. The only difference between the two is hacchaka applied the decals while schizophonic9 didn't. There's no effort put into either of those builds besides the actual basics of putting together the kit by following the instructions.

It's a slightly different color too.

I mean for the actual in series depictions, the proportions change too. The CCA and F91 renditions had center section on chest protrude quite a bit further and thinner thighs. Bandai's been shifting everything towards to the D-type style recently though.

You can look up translations for just about everything, people even translated the instructions if you google your specific instructions. You can also google what the symbols stand for. Other than that, nothing is very important in Japanese. Everything is represented by images properly.

There's a lot of better advice you can get from just Google searching or Youtubing popular Gunpla channels.

You don't need glue for basic construction (unless it's an 80s kit), only for advanced touch-ups that exist for preference (for which you want to get plastic cement for. I suggest getting both a regular and a thin kind, but if on budget just Thin Tamiya Plastic Cement should be good enough). If you're satisfied with construction and plan to paint, then thin plastic cement is especially useful for hiding separation lines (called seams) on your kit.

Out of curiosity, what building tools do you own and how's your monthly budget?

>>
>>17142051
im only speaking of getting interesting effects, eyeliner can fill a line completely and can be buffed off to be flush, and it will dry and harden there, however it is hard to manage to use this in a painted model.
i still wash usually but i like using eyeliner too sometimes.
>>
>>17142100
A-anon, invest into some clippers asap. Something basic like xuron cutters (orange handles) and a basic exacto knife goes a long way. It's pretty cheap, about 20-30 bucks all together with replacement knifes. Both tools have plenty of uses outside of just getting model pieces off the runner too.
People often recommend God Hands, but you in general want regular cutters with them and they are more of a convenient cutter tool to save on sanding rather than your main one.

I am guessing you work part time as a student? For future another tool I'd recommend is a pin vise, you can get a cheap one at any hobby store as well.
>>
>>17142100
If you're actually serious about continuing the hobby you should pick up a pair of God Hands for about 50 dollars. They're pretty costly but will save you a lot of time and headaches when it comes to nub management as a beginner and beyond that. Anyone here who's purchased them can attest to that.

You know what, personally I think you are just a troll who is out to trigger people, but I'm feeling great today so I give you the benefit of the doubt:
If you really are new, then hi/welcome-andallthatshit, I suggest you read the guide before you go any further (watching some decent videos on youtube isn't a bad idea nor is googling around, but the guide is a great start). Ask yourself one question before you continue; do I want to atleast put in a little effort into my plastic crack? If the answer is yes then I suggest you actually pay attention if the answer is no then I suggest you leave this thread.

Building gunpla is super easy and you don't need to be able to read Japanese. Some of the stuff like certain symbols do get explained in the guide and I'd suggest trying to remember what they mean (also newer kits since last year have english in their guides aswell). What's important is that you get the proper tools to build kits. Using >>17142100 is literally the very worst you could do, so stop mutilating your plastic with those scissors. Buy a pair of decent nippers (they aren't expensive), get a small file and some sandpaper and you are basically good to go.
While assembling your kit make sure you completely remove the nubs and file then sand them down so that you can't see them anymore. It's the very least amount of work you can do on your kit and you really should. If you can't be bothered with that then this just isn't the hobby for you.
Also if you plan on posting here I hope you have a spine, since this isn't a hug box like other places on the internet. People are going to call your "work" garbage and shit and they will be right. Learn from it, improve and advance.
This hobby requires you to do a bit of research on things. So again atleast read the guide. Good luck, have fun.

memehand was more suitable for cut tiny things as the blade was thin & quite fragile at some point, that's that.
if anything, tools efficiency is based on how the user wields it. pick up a decent nipper, improvise said nipper & you're good to go.
did it on Mineshima D3A; sharpen the blades, tighten the hinges, strengthen up the spring & oil it up decently. it work wonders even till now.
>>
>>17142662
>based on how the user wields
Same goes for godhands. I've used many types of nipper from cheap to the high end ones and the godhands are by far the best around. As long as you dont do anything stupid with them they provide amazing results.
>>
>>17142674
even with all the precaution you could do, you will never stop the accumulation of micro fractures on those tiny blade, during the usage for a period of time. those blade will break somehow.
unless cutting tiny sprue out of runner, it's a ok. but not all sprue on runner is tiny enough and those tiny blade gotta suffer.

I've built and cut up a total of around 30 kits since I started the hobby in July with it, over half of them MGs. I also used it to cut every single piece off the runner with every one of those kits. It still looks like new, still cuts like butter with no stress marks, and is only showing a tiny bit of rust near one of the handles because of the climate here. I treated it with oil after every single use to make sure the blades didn't rust. If you take care of your tools, then they'll take care of you.

>>17142674
I also bought pretty much every single sided nipper on the market that I could find, including really obscure ones. Even the DSPIAE nippers which an Anon recommended. Nothing came close to the cut quality of God Hands and a few of them were the same price as it, like the DSPIAE nippers. I posted the cut quality comparisons here a while back with all of them.

Also the Gaplant Hrairoo.
It looks cool, but the build is just so long-winded and repetitive. It's probably because it's a transformable suit and so it feels super flimsy despite being so big and that makes it feel unsatisfying to build.
I also can't understand why they put the stand plug on a fucking hinge instead of just having one static plug each for the MA and MS modes. It's too heavy so no matter how you pose it in MS mode, it's going to lean backwards or forwards on the hinge.

We don't. That was his tripname. It started with a character in Build Fighters that we nicknamed Snapfit-kun and a couple of people jokingly called him that in the gunpla thread. >>17143866

One thing that I love about gunpla is all the work the designers have put into part separation so that the kit looks amazing right off the box without paint or glue. It's well above the quality standard I'm used to. I understand people wanting to paint and pimp their kits, but seeing people acting like the vanila gunpla quality is beneath them and shitting on it doesn't sit well with me.

My standard was set by the western toylines (made in China). Bad plastic, meh articulation, show inaccuracy, and mold lines for the same price as a gunpla. I was already unhappy with Hasbro and LEGO before, but the Bionicle G2 fiasco and getting my first gunpla pushed me to active resentment.
I posted a few pictures of Barbatos on the Bionicle thread over at /toy/, comparing one company's skeleton-with-snap-on-armor-shells with another's at the same price point. Some guy complained that these were production pictures, so I posted a few crappy photos of my Lupus. No paint, no stickers, nubs still on the horns (I like them better honestly). The coat flaps were missing because they were in the way of the legs. The guy went wild at this point, yelling about "not LEGO" and accusing me off showing off my incomplete snapfit. I couldn't tell if it was gunpla autism or a LEGO brand loyalist trying to keep people from taking their money elsewhere. The brick fandom has a fair share of autists, but the company is also known to send free stuff, free prototype pieces, and free new sets in advance to a number of community heads and personas in order to peer-advertise and keep fans invested.

It’s just hard for autists to understand that most people have shit taste, like you. Gunpla is already a very niche hobby in English speaking places, so its to be expected that it attracts lazy, low effort, NEETs once they find out they can just snap together a kit and be accepted. Nothing against you, someone has to have shit taste, and everyone can’t have artistic skills or an artistic eye.

im mortally terrified of posting my eyeliner lining job even though im pretty shocked at how good looking th job came out. hard to gauge how something unusual like that woukd be recieved. thing is im also kinda new, can't manage nubs very well as no clippers or paint, just a very sharp pocket knife and superfine, but im not made of money and do the best I can anyways. I've been buffing and filling with charcoal on grayscale panels and that's fine because I buff all my panels anyway for more matte look.

I am sorry to hear you're painting toy robots for acceptance. I just love playing with super articulated cool robots that can exchange parts (hence the interest in bonkles). I used to be into GW stuff and won a local LotR painting competition, plus I customized a few toys back in around 09'. Like I said I'm all for customizing your toys, but once you do, you can't play with them anymore.
I dig the LED though. Did you install it or is it a made piece?

>I am sorry to hear you are painting toy robots for acceptance

See, when you demean/downplay the hobby that you yourself are partaking in, it doesn’t help your argument. This is the argument snapfags always use when they’ve run out of excuses. If you want well articulated toys, they make figures just for that. These are models though, something you don’t play with. Pick up, examine, and maybe even repose, sure. Play with? Nah. Got get a robot spirit or metalbuild figure or something.

I wonder if the nips have to deal with this kind of cancer in their gunpla community?

Yeah, sure, but that's a small negative in a sea of positives. It's easily outbalanced by the clean paintjob, clean decal application, and clean panel lining.
It's also not quite that bad, it's only visible on the the stock and the barrel, plus a bit (and only a bit, only in the middle) of the scope. So it's a 'you were close' problem, not a 'you didn't even try, did you?' problem.

>>
I still find this whole forced elitism vs snapfagging hilarious. Back when these threads became a regular thing instead of a random slow thread every few weeks back when build fighters started the thread was mainly populated by newfags and snapbuilders who came here because shitposting on /toy/ was at an all time high and was too "elitist". Now the threads are exactly like the /toy/ threads were back then. We're only missing a guy spamming about FFS kits and "muh serious models aren't toys" every thread.
>>
>>17144474
>We’re only a missing a guy spamming about FSS kits
Damn, that sounds nice. I bet those were the fucking days.
>>
>>17144481
It was a guy spamming about how horrible they were and how much he hated the designs specifically because it would trigger the threads autistic ffs poster (who had been spamming pics of ffs kits he himself had never built before) and then the two would spend literally the whole thread shitposting each other for an entire day. It was fucking awful.

And then you play the victim by saying

You're crying persecution even as you look down on others.
This is why your NPD tactics doesn't work on written form. Because you're relying on muddling what's been said, but there's an archive of it to go back and reread or quote.
Once again I am demeaning you in particular for your appauling manipulative personality, so stop trying to hide behind everyone in the thread who paints their gunpla and make them take a stand with you by jumbling my words to include them. I said

>I understand people wanting to paint and pimp their kits, but seeing people acting like the vanila gunpla quality is beneath them them and shitting on it doesn't sit well with me.
>Like I said, I'm all for customizing your toys, but once you do, you can't play with them anymore.

Well don't use a box cutter first of all, it's nowhere near sharp enough to reliably do so. Your best bet is to get some sandpaper. Decent ones to start with (I started with them) are these.
https://www.usagundamstore.com/products/kamiyasu-sanding-stick-400-3mm
There's also another pack that has finer grits. You can also pick up god hands to cut the nubs clean after you remove the parts from the runner. That takes a lot of practice though.

much harder. many parts need to be cemented together and because of that you have to plan your build around painting before you snap it together. Some parts are fragile and thin by design and the parts count is comparable to an early MG. That being said I loved this build as it taught me alot during the build process.

Will proper usage of thin cement replace the need for puttying on minor seam lines?

(not related to above question) Sometimes super glue nor plastic glue work, what should I use then? I assume plastic glue like tamiya cement stops working because of the paints/primers, but sometimes even super glue fails.
>>
>>17145309
depends on the seam. once you weld the seam and sand it flat, prime the piece. this will reveal if the seam is truly gone or not. if not then thin putty is called for to ablate the seam completely.
and you are correct, once you paint the part, plastic cement stops working and superglue will bond to the paint just fine but now the only thing holding your parts together is a thin layer of paint with glue on top. to combat this, sand down the surfaces you plan to glue together to give your glue something to adhere to.
>>
>>17145274
There's nothing more "difficult" about an MG than HG or PG or any other Bandai kit. All you do is cut parts from a sprue and snap them together. Non-Bandai kits, especially glue ones, require more planning and test-fitting. And on giant robots with a billion moving parts, it's extra tough.

Get two really cheap kits, from the same series is recommended, and think of a way to bash them without considering the difficulty.

Next find the tools you needs, including nipper, epoxy putty, drills, saw, plaplate and etc.

Finally, try to put the part you want into where you want. If you can't do so, it's a good time to bullshit your way using all the aforementioned tools until the pegs and joints are compatibles. You have to figure how yourself by testing bits by bits. Plapate and epoxy are very flexble tools to those bullshits.

Don't mind if the end result is faulty, but try to finish it anyway you can, as it you give you a good starting points. Once you're done, you will start seeing a way to customize betters.

If I want to hand paint details onto my kits, like decals/designs, what is best at that? Acrylic, lacquer, surely not enamel?
>>
>>17145941
Acrylic will give you easier time, though you can do with Lacquer just fine. Enemal is fine, it's not as hard as you think. Just experiment and do you. Videos and guides will give you a good idea, but you'll find everyone has their own developed techniques and paint ratios.

I got mine from amazon, but pretty much all human models are unfortunately female

I'm cool with the ladies.
I'm finding some for 15 which is nice. Is there a site for such figures? Browsing Amazon can be a pain. Best to find elsewhere and search on Amazon.
>>
>>17146198
Which ones did you find? Stuff like fags are in 40-80 USD range and are pretty decent. The Gunpla line of girl are pretty bad, but if you're willing to take the effort to paint then they become slightly less bad.

I bought my first kit 2 years ago, snapped that together, then decided I'd paint my next kit. Obviously that didn't work out as well as I had hoped (see pic related), but it was fun. My next kit turned out a lot better and by now I feel I'm pretty good a painting.

I'd like to point out that removing nubmarks and reading up before blindly jumping in are not advanced techniques or something. Get rid of nubs on your first kit, it's easy as hell and take almost no effort.

There's literally hundreds of guides on how to remove nubmarks on the internet. Read the guide, google it, or use youtube they will all provide you with detailed ways of how to remove nubs.

Start off by getting decent tools. Buy hobby nippers (doesn't even need to be expensive ones), get a small hobby file and some 1000 grit sandpaper.
1. Cut the piece of the runner but leave parts of the gate.
2/3 Cut down the nubs, but leave a little bit sticking out.
4/5 File the nub away so that it's flush with the surrounding plastic.
6. Use sandpaper to smoothen out the surface (1000 grid should be fine)
7/8. No more nubs and no horrible gouges in the plastic.

It's simple, it doesn't take long and you don't need to make a huge investment. A pair of decent nippers is a must to begin with building gunpla.

I'll tell you this anon. I'm pretty sure I'm one of those people you call asshats and that you think I'm some kind of retarded troll.
What you don't know is that I'm also one of the people posting a lot of their work in these threads, contributing and helping out people with questions as much as possible.
You might think that all I'm interested in is "baiting people" and "shitposting", but that's not true. I'd like my little thread to do a bit better and that means you have to set a bar sometimes.
As I said earlier in this thread; It's not about fucking up and producing horrible kits. It's about the attitude with which people post them. A guy who posts a sideways picture of a nubridden kit then demands we give him praise and gets mad when confronted with any criticism, should be chased out as fast as possible. A guy who posts the same picture but asks for help, understands he did something wrong and takes advice/feedback to heart are the kind of people who get helped and who deserve patience.

So yeah I know you are eager to place everyone into a labeld box and that you want to marignalise complaints by pretending that there are "just a few of trolls", but I think you'll find that a much larger part of our little community sometimes just doesn't want to take shit.

Can I ask, what paint are you using?
>>
>>17145805
It's fun to do. I care more about the process than the final result honestly, and calling it quits after a simple recolor isn't interesting
>>
>>17146391
Not that anon, but what's your opinion on using a hobby knife to remove nubs? I could go out and buy a pair of decent nippers but I was wondering if using a hobby knife would help me produce the same results, in which case I wouldn't need to buy nippers.
>>
>>17146512
Personally I don't like using a hobby knife, but theoretically you can achieve the same result. I hear plenty of people using hobby knifes, but that's not for me. I get the job done with my nippers in no time at all.
You DO need nipper anyway to remove the pieces from the runners properly so get nippers anyway. You can always buy a hobby knife aswell.

Are Gundam markers worth it? I'm shit at painting
>>

They're OK for panel lining if you aren't gonna topcoat since they won't eat the plastic but they're shit for painting larger surfaces

The only way to get good results from a gundam marker is to pour out the paint and use a brush and at that point you might as well be buying paint

Are there any specific decals for this thing? I just came off building a p40, and yeeting a shitty b25j out the fucking window into the woods.

I thought about just getting standard zaku stuff for it, but idk if 0083 had anything special going on with them. Also the white made me think of maybe doing it up like a finish nazi, or winter war kinda thing. Could go with nazi bot and the commies.

Thoughts?

Nah 0083 was before the Katoki greeblefest era so none of the suits have markings out the ass like later series.

Is it completely necessary to prime a part before painting it?
>>
>>17147802
It's a good rule to follow because there's no guarantee the paint will stick onto the part otherwise, and primer shows imperfections in the model for you to go back and smooth out before painting it.
>>
>>17147802
>>17147812
Also priming before hand will give you the color you want and more evenly
