what is /lit/'s opinion?
>>12574313He’s one of my favorite musicians, and I liked the first volume of his memoirs, but I don’t compare him to writers. He’s just Bob Dylan, and that’s good enough for me.
There are better poets, better songwriters and better singers.https://youtube.com/watch?v=8LNuk0OgWhQ
>>12574313best artist of all time. no one is even close.but I laugh at the fact he received the Nobel prize.
Only worthwhile thing he did was get covered by Hendrix
>>12574341>best artist of all time. no one is even close.Lol, no.
best american poet of the 20th century
>>12574355I can already tell u listen to some faggy shit
nothing to scoff at. probably 5th or 6th greatest English language poet of the 20th, and a good singer with a unique voice
>>12574387that, my friend, would be William Carlos Williams
i wanna know what Daddy Bloom thinks of him
>>12574332>There are better poetsTrue.>better songwriters and better singersWrong.
>>12574330he is second only to GRR "The Fat Man" Martin in holding out on an audience
>>12574347Original version is better.
>>12574735original version is better>>12574748original version is not better
he's the best performer of anything everso for the purposes of, say, Rolling Stone magazine, he's the best
>>12574571Stephen Malkmus was a better songwriter
>>12574313Silvio Rodriguez is better
>>12575540Absolutely pleb opinion
Prefer Robert Hunter as a lyricist. As far as singers I would say that Reba Mcentire and Michael Jackson kick his ass. I like a couple of Bob's songs alright but I prefer actual bluegrass for that sound.
What does /lit/ think of Mr Mojo Risin?
>>12574440not even close
>>12574313I have a gut feeling he would have been a GOAT poet before the radio was a thing. Since we’ll never know for sure, he’ll always just be Bob Dylan to me. He’s like Shakespeare or Dali to me, so original there’s no point in comparing them to others in their field. They’re there, and as an artist you have to reckon with their influence or ignore it at your own peril.
>>12574313he makes music..
>>12575730why is she so fucking hot? why is she not riding my cock right now?
>>12574408Leonard Cohen.Bob Dylan BTFO.
>>12576264holy shit calm down brody
>>12574313Much better post '86, if you read Chronicles you'll see what I mean. His exploration of public persona (or transfiguration, as he calls it) is just as interesting as the songs themselves. I am talking of the continual shapeshifting in order to continue making music, his relations to Joan Baez and Sara Lownds, the plagiarism, the whole triplet mysticism he developed, the Guthrie-style folksinging. He is someone worthy of mythologising. On the actual content, he is a far better singer than people give him credit for, and not quite as good a songwriter as people hype him up to be - still definitely /lit/ on the whole, especially in Blood on the Tracks and "Love and Theft", but a lot of the 65-66 shit was literally him making sounds, rather than writing anything profound.
>>12574819My fucking nigger. Bob Dylan couldn’t sing or play guitar worth a damn. Rock and Roll pretty much killed musicality in the west
Dillon definitely deserved the Oscar just for Jimmy Hendricks’s guitar solo on “There Must Be Some Kinder Way Out of Here Said the Joker to the King”
I don't care about musicians, and especially singers. They're all vapid, mostly stupid people who just happened to have beautiful voices. Of all artistic mediums I think its safe to say that music sits dead last when it comes to the average IQ of the recognized "greats"
>>12576346Cohen’s first for albums are amazing I agree. But everything went downhill with death of a ladies man. When Dylan explored diffrent genres he managed to create the best rock ever. Thinking mainly bout his trilogy 65-66. Dylan made several hundred of songs worth listening to while Cohen made 4 albums.
>>12576684Dylan barely explored other genres, he made one big change, lost half his audience then played it safe and at most added a hint of another genre. Cohen explored far more than Bob ever has.Cohen is a better writer.
>>12576682You clearly have never listened to Bach.
>>12574313dont like his voice at all
>>12576717Have you even listened to a single song from JWH, Modern Times or Shadows in the Night?

>>12578000>hurr durr art is bout feels mangCreation of a masterpiece is necessarily an intellectual endeavour, even if the final result might appear to be entirely emotional in essence.
>>12574313I'm going to see him live in April, what am I in for ?
>>12576667based and dadrockpilled
>>12576717u must either be retarded or actually never listened to Dylan. Huge difference between Freewheelin, Blonde on Blonde, Nashville Skyline, Blood on the tracks, Slow Train Coming etc.
>>12578356Growling, pedal steel guitar, a lot of material from Tempest and "Love and Theft" if you haven't listened to them already. The classics are there, just rearranged - you can listen to some of the recent concerts on the Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands youtube channel.
>>12578855>a lot of material from Tempest and "Love and Theft"fuck me
>>12578945then again he has been singing some songs for 50+ years so I understand
>>12578003No point.>>12578564Never said there was no difference. Lyrically, its still Bob writing pop songs, and he does it well, but just because he changes the instruments/musicians abit and sings in 3/4 for a change does not mean he explores genres. What is with Dylan fans, say one thing against him and you are immediately a moron who just pretends to have actually heard him before.
>>12575602based human being and god tier frontman/performer/showman but lyrics have no literary merit whatsoever and not 1/3 the quality of dylan's lyrics
>>12575602MKULTRA actor to get the youth hooked on drugs and the anti-war crowd look physically displeasing. Probably didn't die, rumored to be Rush Limbaugh. First part's true, second, you be the judge. Also LA Woman is the shittiest rock song in all of history and the only shittier big name band than the doors is AC/DC
>>12574839Yeah>I CAN'T STOP, PARTYING, PARTYINGfeat. Lil Wayne really can't compete with>Out beyond the call of duty, hold your instincts hostage and stick near me; let's drink a toast, it's the most I can stand to cry about the mental energy you wasted on this wedding invitation.or>I was dressed for success, but success it never comes, and I'm the only one who laughs, at your jokes when they are so bad, and your jokes are always bad, but they are none as bad as this, [based and redpilled pre-chorus ensues]or>THERE IS NO CASTRATION FEAR, IN A CHAIR
>>12579813why do you say his lyrics have no literary merit?
Don't really care for his style of singing but I appreciate his musical and lyrical influence on artists I do like and on pop music generally.
>>12580431Shitting on Morrison became a thing to do after Almost Famous came out, think that was the moving at least everyone loved him until PSHoffmans character called him a drunken baffoon, people were extra stupid back then.Morrison developed quicker as a writer than Dylan, compare their skills at like point in their careers, but Morrison died before he could move on from drinking and ducking songs, was just starting to you around when he died. They both have some good stuff, but I do not go out of my way to listen to either.
>>12576717I couldn't possibly choose between Cohen or Dylan but you're an absolute moron if you think Cohen "explored far more".

>>12580682That would not be a bad thing, this place could more crotch mavens.
>>12580680I doubt he even listens to Cohen, he just put it out there so he can insert something in the argument without getting his ass blasted for his actual shit taste
>>12574313I don't know if this will getme laughed at but I find some of Julian Casablancas work from the Strokes and the Voidz to really connect to me o some level, other than that I like some of Nick Caves work better than either Bob or Leonard, other than that Bob is the GOAT
>>12579830>Also LA Woman is the shittiest rock song in all of history Terrible taste>and the only shittier big name band than the doors is AC/DCTerrible taste
>>12574313Probably the most undeserved Lit Nobel ever. Would be considering middling at best if he was a poet and not a popular musician. He's a great songwriter, but a very mediocre figure in literature.
>>12576346I have a longer relationship with Dylan's stuff; but Cohen is on another level with him equally. Lyrically they're both sublime and musically they both produced quality work throughout the tenure of their careers thus far. One isn't necessarily better than the other.
i really love his music, from lots of periodshe's an interesting artist with lots of different styles but always the same kinda vibe. different each time but also the same (i think i heard that quote attributed to someone else but it fits him so well)i love how little of a shit about what his fans want he gives and the way he'll perversely troll them when they get too attached, that he wants to give them what he's interested in, not what they arewhen he's on form, his lyrics are incredible, but they often don't mean as much as people think they do imo. obviously some stuff like blood on the tracks is highly meaningful, but i think a lot of his most famous stuff is word salad nonsense poetry and that's fine. he just strings together silly random things that sound neat together. i suspect that sometimes when they DO make sense this is subconscious or coincidentalhe reminds me of my dad who loves him and makes me deeply nostalgic for my childhoodi like the sound of his voice, and his general musical aesthetic which isn't pretty or especially advanced but does have a striving wiry energy to iti don't think he should have won the nobel prize, nor should any musician. stupid publicity move that devalues the prize des
>>12580443his voice is his best merit in my opinion
>>12579279can you made someone who constantly changed genres? even the most innovative like Bowie remained more or less in their genres. Dylan going electric is one of the most bold change in genres any major artists committed to. its a ridiculous argument
