Not just talking about the Steyr model, but just the concept of Jeff Cooper's "Scout Rifle". Does anyone use one? Whats the pros and cons regarding the general principle of it, the eye relief scope, short profile etc?
>>
*on top of all that, does anyone have any recommendations or advice with them in general? I'd like to purchase one later down the line as the concept of it is appealing to me but I'd still like to see what others think of it all as all I've read is just general stuff on what it is but nothing beyond that

It just feels wrong to have an optic mounted that far forward

Lurk a lot and watch a ton of videos. I bought a ton of guns when I first got into this like 6 years ago and I still make a ton of regrettable decisions. Don't let your first gun be a meme gun. Take it slow, get what you want for whatever you want to use it for, but your main goal with being into guns should be fun, because that's 99% of what your experience with the hobby will ever be.

>Whats the pros and cons regarding the general principle of it?
It makes for a great hiking rifle. If you want to ''build'' a rifle by the core concepts of the scout rifle, you're going to end up with a lightweight rifle that can take most game, and will be a lot better to hike around for a day than a heavier bolyboi. The emphasis on lightweight and small package make it good concept for a rifle that is to be carries 99.9% of the time and fired 0.1%.
>the eye relief scope
The scope isn't put far forward to allow long eye relief. The scope is put there for three reasons:
>Prevent scope bite
>Allow stripper clip loading
>Wide field of view
Stripper clip loading is obsolete, proper technique can prevent scope bite, and there are three options I'd suggest that also provide a wide FOV: a low magnification variable optic, a red dot + magnifier, or a D-EVO. All of these can be mounted over the ejection port of the modern scout rifle, which improves balance.

I would honestly would rather carry a takedown rifle like a Chiappa M6 or AR-7 Innawoods if I wasn't really planning on needing to use it over a Cooper's scout rifle idea gun.

Thanks, anons. I appreciate the feedback. First gun is going to be a Rem700 in .223, but once I'm into going for hunting trips for a few days I'll want to be looking into a good scout rifle to carry around with me. Any recommendations on a particular rifle (possibly with reasons as to why, as well as recommended caliber too?)
>>
>>42587832
There's a big difference between a scout rifle and a survival rifle though. You can't expect those two takedown rifles to take down game that a .308 can.

>>42587843
A true scout rifle does not exist, you'll have to build your own based on the values you appreciate.

"you'll have to build your own based on the values you appreciate." This is what i did. I liked the idea of a scout rifle as I hunt in Michigan ad we have these things called trees making long shots not a thing here, I mean most shots here are taking at distances a bow could make. I did not care for the idea of the front relief type scope for hunting so I just use a 3 to 9 power that I plan to just leave at the 4 power setting 99% of the time. I chose a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39. 7.62x39 is not a powerful cartridge but is it cheap and low recoiling, again I doubt I will ever shoot anything past 100 yards in this state.
>>
Would forward mounting a LER scope on a 20" mannlicher stock rifle be TOO front heavy? The solidity of the rifle, it's .243 cartridge, and reliable irons make me want to turn it into a true bush/scout rifle, but weight is a problem. Specifically the Interarms Mark X Continental Carbine

>designed by low functioning alcoholic autist fudder
>only loved by low functioning autists and retards

Completely retarded concept when it originated and beyond retarded now. Anyone owning a "scout" rifle or saying they're "cool" or "misunderstood" is a confirmed complete drooling autist and should kill themselves immediately upon reading this.

This is literally one of the worst places for info and advice. These shitlords bitch about all the misinformation being spewed by boomers in gun shops, but this is literally the young(er) man's version of EXACTLY that. Sure, *slightly* better researched, but otherwise, eesh, damn near the same shit, just different misinformation

It may be a good hunting rifle, but it's doing so many things not by the book that you can hardly call it a scout rifle.

>>42587886
I think it'd be too heavy in general, and a wooden Mannlicher stock is not exactly the plastic one Cooper advocates. Just about everything needs to be sacrificed at the altar of weight savings for a true scout, and lots of wood is the first thing to go.

Bro I know it is not a scout rifle. I used Jeffs article for a battle rifle as a jumping off point and turned it into a hunting rifle that suits my needs. I went will 7.62x39 for cost (and lowered recoil). I did not use a forward scope because the deer don't shoot back at me. My point is OP could incorporate the ideas into his own gun. That is why he made this thread.
>>
>>42587926
Sadly that's one part of the scout gun I can't follow. Granted, it'll likely be slung on my back for most of the time, and I've handled heavier for prolonged periods without much issue. I guess my primary concern was balance and making the most out of my inherited gun instead of it being a wall hangar.
>>
>>42587958
Stop trying to push it into something it can't be: just call it a hunting rifle instead. It'll look better with a regular scope anyways.
>>
>>42587961
I figured. With how tough its Mauser action is and how durable the body is, I thought I could make it an all around kind of fun with varying .243 loads. But yeah, it can be bulky af and has no detachable mag. Forward scope would definitely help loading it at least since it's mounts are real low. I'm trailing on with bad ideas at 4AM
