So all my life I've just carried crap Chinese pocket knives around for cutting boxes or what have you. Well I picked up a Buck 110 folder the other day and seeing as I've decided to splurge on a nice knife I should take care of it. What are the essentials for knife sharpening that I should know? Anyone got some infographs?

I've sharpened kitchen knives before on the little circular file that usually comes with a set but really nothing more than that. I found a bucket of mineral oil in my grandpas barn and apparently some applications call for oiling the whetstone so that's what I have on hand. I bought a $4 sharpening stone on clearance at my local Milsurp store but I have no idea as to the quality of it.

I keep seeing sites saying that you need to keep an angle of around 10 to 30 degrees against the stone, and that it's very important and a difficult part of the process. why do they stress it so much? shouldnt I just be matching the angle of the bevel? it seems pretty intuitively easy to do that when the bevel is already made from the factory, or am I missing something?

You're filing on the blade. Do what people who know what they're talking about tell you and not what you think while having no experience in the matter.

ok bro let me get my protractor
>>
>>41748289
Sharpie the blade so you know where you've worked. Holding the blade at a 45 degree angle is not an impossible task, but if you are unsure of yourself they do make plastic ramps you can rest on your stone.
>>
>>41748243
>literally small rocks stuck to a belt
>>
>>41748300
it just seems to me like you should be matching the angle of the bevel so you're duplicating/filing the factory angle....which is pretty much what that 10-30 degrees figure is coming from I'm guessing. I'll try the sharpie trick thanks. Do they just include that for brainlets who would try to grind the entire side of the blade?

Basically what I'm asking is should you match the bevel, or go higher/lower than the bevel, giving it a different edge?

Also is a wet sharpening better than dry or do they accomplish different things? If theres any info about this in the wiki let me know but I didnt see anything about sharpening

Buy a king 1k/6k stone. If you ever seriously mess up the edge or get it really dull you'll need to get a norton 120/300 india stone. Or just buy a lanksy or work sharp but they're pretty expensive. Mineral oil is really good.
>>
>>41748138
Mineral oil on whetstone. You can get a good edge pulling it from the back to the blade, but when you get better go forward. ...Like you're trying to shave the stone with the knife. Get a old leather belt, rub some chalk on it to hone the blade. Keeps the edge better, gets rid of the rough shit sharpening leaves. Also, that round thing that comes with your knife set is a hone. Just straightens any imperfections in the blade, makes it sharper but doesnt actually "sharpen" it.
>>
>>41748138
Leave the primary bevel alone. What you want to do it make micro adjustments to the edge or create a “micro bevel” the best way to do this it to buy a crock stick sharpening system like the Lansky turn box or the Spyderco sharpmaker. They’re both ceramic so it’ll keep your knives sharp as hell and whenever they start to get slightly dull you just touch it up. It saves the life of the knife and lots of time because it removes very little metal and only take 10 minutes to touch up. I hope this helps

this might be stating the obvious, but if you are primarily box-cutting, a box cutter is better than a knife. you can even get a nice handle for the cutter. replaceable blades are very nice to have if you are working in a warehouse, or even retail.

You bought the boomer folder, you've got to use the boomer sharpening method. Get yerself an black/composite Ar-Kansas stone and if you want to ruin it go ahead and throw oil all over it instead of just using some water. Make sure you pull the burr off the edge with a pencil eraser, strop it with a yardsale razor strop, and then shave your arm with it.

If you really want to learn, buy a set of plastic sharpening angle wedges off amazon. Get used to the angles you want and just practice practice practice.
Practice on a shitty knife if you want.
Lord knows I spent hours on stones and have burnished my skin off and bled on them before I began grasping what I was doing.
>>
>>41750067
an india stone is fine. ignore the meming boomers on knife forums who go to 30 000 grit in 1000 grit increments to get a knife sharp enough to shave your ballsack. india stone then strop is more than enough

okay this is going to sound stupid but help me out with this. i can get a knife shaving sharp and i can get a knife paper cutting sharp but i cant get both at the same time. if its sharp enough to shave with it ends up getting caught on paper. if its nice on paper it wont shave hair off my arm.
all sharpening is done freehand on a shitty harbor freight dualstone.

what am i screwing up is it angle?

You don't HAVE to keep the exact specifications that your blade bevel came with from the factory. They machine those and churn them out pretty quickly, not always individually loved and cared for.

A more shallow angle is always sharper, but it is less durable. Steeper angle is less sharp and more durable. Think of extreme examples like a scalpel vs an axe. The scalpel has a very shallow angle to the edge but if you tried to chop wood with it the edge would fold right over. The steeper edge of the axe can hold an edge while chopping but you could never do surgery with it.
>>
>>41749555
Hot girls do this to feel secure. If you date an uglier person you can dump them at the slightest inconvenience and find someone just as attractive. It's also pretty easy for them to leech off ugly guys with money/status of their own.

Works best with high carbon knifes. Not so good on stainless.

>>41748138
>>41748138
OP: Get a wetstone (lenght should be no less than lenght of your blade), find your angle and just try to cut off thin slices off of that stone with your dull knife. Its actually the same movement as if you'd really try to cut slices off of something else.
>>
>>41752272
>not stainless
Why exactly doesn't it work on stainless? Do you have some actual reasoning for that?
I've used a fucking coffee mug for my S30V PM2, S35VN ZT 460, and Elmax 566, and it works perfectly well.
>>
>>41748138
Your edge bevel angle should match what you want to do with the blade. Do you want a really fine slicer? Put an acute edge bevel on it. Are you going to be whacking it against logs and shit? Put a wider obtuse edge on it.

When you're sharpening, set the knife on the stone at the angle you want the edge to be. Lock your wrist at that angle, and get a feel for it. Draw the edge back and forth over the stone while keeping that same angle until you get a burr going (the edge folding over to the other side, you can feel it with your fingernail).
Once you get a burr on one side, switch to the other side. Set your blade at the same angle, and repeat the process till you get the burr going the other way.
Now, move to finer grit. Repeat.
Keep going to finer and finer grits until you get it as fine as you want.
If you have a leather belt or some other strip of leather, use that to strop. Lay the blade down at the same angle you sharpened, but slide it backwards (opposite of what you would do if you were trying to slice into the leather). Strop it maybe 10-20 times on one side, then repeat for the other. Use progressively fewer passes as you go along. At the end, you should be using very little pressure and making one pass each side.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "uncircumcised goyim" bullshit that's going on in /k/ threads right now. Mohel cut circumcised jewish penises deserves much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine mohel circumcision in Israel for 2,400,000 newshekels (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my circumcised jewish cock.

Jewish mohels spend years working on a single foreskin and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest penises known to mankind.

Jewish penises are thrice as long as European penises and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything an uncircumcised wang can penetrate through, a jewish penis can penetrate better. I'm pretty sure a jewish dick could easily impale a knight wearing full plate with a simple thrust from behind.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Jerusalem? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Rabi and their trouser snakes of destruction. Even in World War II, Nazi soldiers targeted the men with the circumcised dicks first because their fucking power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Jewish fuckpoles are simply the best porkswords that the world has ever seen, and thus, require more respect on /k/.

You have a secondary bevel to your main bevel which you dont find in chisle or Scandinavian grinds. This is the cutting bevel. The angle matters depending on your task 20-30 is ideal for your general use knife. Having a bevel thats too thin can ruin the durability of the cutting edge. You usually find 20 and under in specialized knives such as kitchen knives woth a specific purpose ie filletting or cutting veggies. As there is minimal wear and tear and constant maintenance on the edge.
