I'm not used to seeing this pattern used like in the sentence above ~て~ても
Is the first て simply being used as the conjunction "and" in the example above?
So it reads as "Sumi's grip was no longer that of a couples' AND I had a feeling she was saying that we don't need to be family to share (this feeling)"
That reads very awkwardly so I suspect it's incorrect.

RTK works by linking each kanji with a unique keyword so your brain learns to distinguish them individually and stop treating them as "blurry scribble that probably reads like XX... probably".

Ok. (I'll get to my point in a while, just hear me out first.)

I'm not a beginner, I did Heisig when I first started learning japa but I burned out eventually. After that I just moved on.

That said, I do like how "memorable" some kanji still are, the ones I do remember from way back. I just can't seem to forget those and I instantly recognize them. I also NEVER confuse those with anything else, contrary to some others.
Therefore I decided to do Heisig again, which should be a lot easier now (mainly cause I'm no longer an idiot with "1 10" anki steps and 0% lapse modifier).

>get to japanese judas-tree
>google it out of curiosity (and to get a mental picture of wtf that was)
>it's how you write Katsura's name
>probably won't forget it from now on

So, here's where I'm getting at:
What if I changed "japanese judas-tree" to a picture of Katsura (or just his name or something)?
The need for me to reproduce the kanji from memory would still be there.
Why not change 憂 to a picture of Tanaka Aiko?
Why not change 妙 to a picture of Araki?
Why not change 漢 into MOTHERFUCKING KAMINA!

Thoughts?
>>
is that even real
>>
I never changed my anki settings and it'll probably kick my ass one day
>>
>>21677459
just do mnemonics that you are likely to remember
if that's character names, that works, too, it's not quantum physics
>>
the only anki setting you need to change is the one that shows when the next card will show up because that makes you grade stuff differently than you should instead of going with the gut feeling of hard normal easy
>>
>using aniki.
Never gonna make it
>>
>>21677481
I'm still doing mnemonics, but instead of "japanese judas-tree", the trigger word would be Katsura.
>>
yeah that's a good point. i reinstalled anki recently but i haven't put anything in it cuz i don't even know what you should do with it anymore

>>
>>21677532
The fuck is Japanese text fear?
>>
>>21677532
push through it
Also, start with shorter texts. Either take something with short passages (twitter / manga) or divide your text in shorter parts. Like instead of thinking: "I have to read all of this ..." you'll go like: "Okay, I'll read this sentence / paragraph." Then just think: "Hmm, okay, I read that. Now I can read the next paragraph."
Worked for me

for this word i'd just learn the first 3 and if i get the reading + two of them when i do the reviews i pass it. realistically when i see it again in context that's usually enough but if it the word has multiple meanings that aren't near-synonymous i'll learn 2 for each meaning. i dont really care too much about anki though and im trash at japanese so keep that in mind.
>>
>>21678553
ok i think you should pass it if you just get one meaning right desu. it will reduce the amount of review you have to do and lower your stress. remembering multiple meanings for one card is too much work for your brain and like you said it gets sorted out in context.
>>
>>21678558
it almost never happens that i miss just the reading. it's usually the other way around for me, readings are very easy to remember

Anki users: how do you personally define again/hard/good? For me:

>'Good' if there were no problems

>>21678696
lol i remember u
>>
best possible way to use anki for vocab gains without hating it
1)never add anything you've only seen once 2)put only the most context fitting japanese def on the FRONT but make the font small, and the word you're studying big
3)test for the reading on the back
you will absorb like osmosis. the fact you've already seen the word multiple times in your input before adding it will prime your brain to WANT to know what it means, which means just seeing the def repeatedly will be enough to remember the meaning the next time you see it, especially if its in japanese. and after the first 1 to 3 reps you probably won't have to look at the j def at all and can just feel the meaning and go straight to testing for the reading. most 楽 and 効果的 anki usage on the planet.
so far i've remembered every single word i've repped in that deck the next time i saw it in the wild, meaning and reading. should have thought of this earlier

yep theres a nuance thing for the tree kanjis too
have a crack at this fun little reading here:

「木」というのは、
自然の状態で生えている一本の樹木を指します。
それと同時に、
建材や家具材などに加工されたものに対しても
「木」という漢字を使います。
それに対して「樹」という字は
生きている樹木に対してしか使われません。
つまり生きている樹木に対しては
「木」と「樹」は両方当てはまりますが、
一度切ってしまった樹木は「木」と表現され、
「樹」ではなくなるということです。

Do you guys ever use TTS to generate audio for your sentence cards?
I found this cool TTS software that doesn’t sound like complete ass, and it also lets you pick from a number of emotional inflections (normal, happy, mad, sad)

I think that one of the problems I've run into while reading is that I'll read and read and read for hours, relying only on my gaijin brain to imagine what it should actually sound like in terms of tone, pitch accent, inflection, etc... I figure that even a halfway-decent TTS will sound more naturally Japanese than most gaijin attempts to sound it out without ever hearing it before

Watch this for listening practice
>>
>>21680016
i think what helps my listening ability stay up to speed with my reading ability is watching shit tons of Japanese media with Japanese subtitles.
It's good practice for both listening and reading imo. There was a time a few months ago where I relied super heavily on the subs to understand everything, but I'm getting to the point where I don't need them as much. There are a few sites that have a bunch of anime and dramas that are J-subbed.

Listening: Any Youtube video, film, radio show, etc. I suggest you to add some kana to all of your searches to filter out any Chinese results.
Speaking: Does talking to myself count? If not, then I never practice that shit. I don't plan on ever living or working in Japan.
Writing: I sometimes write a few sentences in my journal in Japanese, but nothing beyond that.

if u could understand 99% of what ur listening to if it was in text then u need to listen more
otherwise ur grammar and vocab is too shit and if u have more fun reading then just read more

The last windows update fucked my laptop. I should have just tried a restore point but I opted for a "system reset" which it turns out deletes all your apps and app data (despite the description saying it doesn't). Is there anywhere I can look for Anki profile data where the system might not have purged it or am I completely fucked?

You are wasting time and should probably work on your sentence mining method. Are you pulling the sentences from boring material? Are they not i+1 sentences? Are you doing like 50+ sentences a day?
I think you'd see a far better time to reward ratio if you focused on mining a few (8-15) sentences per day from material that you're really interested in. Maybe even include pictures and audio from the relevant source context in your anki notes so that you get as much context as possible during your reviews. The point of sentence mining is to use shortcuts to build mental associations between language and context, not burn yourself out. If you don't have at least some fun making custom weebshit decks in Anki then change what you're doing until it is.

no, seriously, it really isn't that hard. you just need time to get used to the writing style which really doesn't take that long at all, i got used to it in less than a week of reading. yes i still struggled with the chunni scenes, but by the end of it they were far more comprehensible than at the beginning. besides, you won't get better at chunni scenes unless you actually read them so why put it off? the whole vn difficulty stuff is a gigantic meme. though, the fact that i really wanted to read senshinkan may have been a contributing factor

>>
>>21680655
don't listen to the "hurr just feel bro" jackasses, or at least don't interpret that advice as "just read whatever and ignore grammar."

look up the grammar points you don't know well and practice reading the example sentences provided in various grammar guides you find. you might even want to mine those sentences if you're familiar with most of the words in them, but you don't have to. just reread the sentences every now and then. i did this with DoJG and it really helped my understand of stuff that i would just kinda gloss over while reading. but remember, read the sentences. rote memorizing an explanation is difficult and not as useful.

I‘ll be honest whenever people talk badly about anime cards after supposedly trying them I can’t help but think they are doing it wrong. So far the vast majority of DJT has neither understood the concept behind anime cards, the optimal way to create them or the optimal way to review them despite me explaining it several times. Instead DJT keeps crying about some made up shit because here is an amazing method that they can’t make use of because it exceeds their intellectual capacity or just because they can’t follow instructions and do some dumb shit to fuck it up and they are bitter about it.

I'm not an ESL, I'm just saying that learning a language like Japanese as your first L2 can make retarded shit like "mnemonics are useful" sound reasonable.
>>
>>21680887
Well let me know where I'm getting this wrong:
-You hear a sentence you can otherwise understand, but with a word you don't know
-Mine the word which goes on the front of the card
-The reading, sentence, audio and any additional needed context, and image go on the back

And yea, it's not fun for me thus far. In fact because I have to spend 20-30 seconds making each card it's just kind of annoying. Perhaps it is because you have to get to a high level for anything you're able to understand to be entertaining. I still can't imagine that being fun though so I don't know. But I will keep going and maybe I'll change my mind.

You put the word, and the sentence the word was used in, on the front. If it came from subs2srs, you might even put the image and audio on front. All the other stuff, plus the definition, can go on the back.

Morphman might be a good add-on since it looks for sentences that likely contain just one thing you don't know with more common words first.

Day 1: Learn hiragana by copying them a bunch of times.
Day 2: Read some Kancolle doujin by looking unknown words up by drawing them into Google Translate on my cellphone. Also, read a page off Tae Kim's grammar guide.
Day 5: I think I read a chapter of Yotsuba. Yasasii as fuck.
Day 6-16: Tried copying the katakana charts everyday. I forgot 'em because I never saw them being used.
Day 25-30 (?): Watched Manabi Straight. I understood most of it mostly because I'd already been watching anime for years now.
Month 2: Read a bit off Yotsuba every day till I got done with volumes 1-3. Also, masturbated to some h-doujin manga every few days.
Month 3: Read a bit more of Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. Did my second round of trying to learn katakana. I was able to succeed this time by writing names like フロイド and ウィットゲンシタイン down.
Month 4: Masturbated some more. I think I watched Sola. I came across lots of unknown words there.
Month 5: Went through the rest of Tae Kim's Grammar Guide. Started learning kanji by studying the 教育漢字 list on Wikipedia. I did very little progres, but I remember that the kanji I learnt back then (all of grade 1 and much of grade 2) is what I can most easily recall how to read and write. I read a volume of 侵略いか娘, and a few chapters off several other manga (cue for the "manga isn't reading" people).
Month 6: After being inspired by DJT, I decided to read はなひら and ななついろドロップス. The former took me 4 days to get through. The latter took me 3 months to finish. Also, started with the KanjiDamage anki deck. After a few weeks, I decided to suspend the production cards so I could make it through my reviews faster. That's more or less when I stopped learning how to write new kanji. I think I read some of Imabi's guide too.
Month 7-9: I read some lessons off Imabi's guide, kept on reading the same VN (7tuiro Drops), which I did greatly enjoy, due to its characters, its setting, its kirakira stuff. Using a mined vocabulary deck strongly helped increase my vocabulary.
Month 10 (current): Have read a few volumes off a few LNs (キノの旅, OniAi, 物語), kept on mining. Have started heading into watching lots of random videos on Youtube for the sake of opening myself up to lots of different ways of speaking, vocabulary, content, etc. Even studied and was able to pass my Calculus/Physics exams by watching some tutorials in Japanese for them.

You don’t have to be obsessed with pitch accent but it’s a bad idea to ignore it because people will have to strain more to understand you. Also, there are different accents in English too, but it would sound ridiculous if someone switched between American and British accents mid-sentence. Native japs are consistent about it unlike you
>>
>>21681679
>but it would sound ridiculous if someone switched between American and British accents mid-sentence.
There are many American accents that can sound vaguely "British" at times, and there many people who have moved a lot and have a mix of accents that nobody complains about.

There’s also a lot of really bad foreigner english that’s borderline not understandable because people didn’t bother to learn proper pronunciation at any point in their studies

Dumb on so many levels. You’re better off just learning how to speak the language instead of wasting your time. Even Japanese people spend 10+ years studying their backwards ass kanji system and most of them still cant even read a newspaper. You guys are hilarious wasting your time attempting that shit.

I don't like the system dictionary file that comes with Windows 10 (that you use when you type to convert kana to kanji), there's too many words/names it's not familiar with and adding them individually sucks. You can add other dictionary files in the settings of the .dic, .dctx, .dctxc varieties but I can't find any. Does anybody know where you can get a hold of such dictionaries? Even just one based on jmdict would be great
>>
No matter how much I try this language just refuses to let me read it.
>>
Am I expected to know the words Tae Kim is using as examples in the grammar guide? Cause I keep getting cucked by these shitty fucking Chinese scribbles and they completely prevent me from grasping the lessons he is trying to convey.
>>
>>21682255
Start with single words. Get up to 500 then start with phrases and words. After 1000 move on to sentences. By 2000 reading paragraphs or more is now in your wheelhouse.
>>
>>21681727
As characters, visual stories ala RTK. With words, good sentences plus easy mnemonics thanks to kanji meanings.
>>
>>21682287
i tried going through it before i had almost any vocab and it made no sense to me either. the vocab he uses is very basic so you should basically know all of it after 500-1000 words in core or whatever. i found my first read through completely useless and when i went through it again after having learned some words it was more understandable.

obligatory disclaimer: im shit at japanese
>>
>>21682298
So you're telling me I have to go read a vocab book now and remember words that I can't even use to make sentences out of yet because I don't know HOW to make sentences, even with words. This is actually so fucking agitating.
>>
>>21682313
did you read the guide? you can learn the 500 most basic words to make tae kims example sentences more comprehensible in about 3 weeks with anki. you're gonna be learning this language for years and years so 3 weeks is literally nothing. btw you are years off from being able to make sentences that don't sound like complete ass anyways so don't even worry about that lol
>>
>>21682324
>did you read the guide?
The intro? I read that, like, 3 years ago as then proceeded to read and then get walled by words I have no idea how to read and give up. Then try again in 6 months when I've forgotten everything.
>>
>>21682344
Well, everything but the kana. That shit is easy enough to remember. The kanji is what always fucks my ass up.
>>
>>21681119
What do you mean by "studying" and how far are you into japanese? I can see my self going to mid town every week or so
>>
>download an LN
>convert it into mobi because the Kindle is a piece of shit and doesn't support sane formats
>all the furigana winds up in the text so I get exciting gibberish like 魔ま法ほう to read
Is the chink replacement OS any better? Hell, does it let me at least turn off the fucking backlight?

I should've known better than to buy Amazon, but in my defence, this thing was very cheap.
>>
>>21682348
So, I take it then I'll probably want to read RTK before the grammar guide? I would have figured you would want to know how to actually, you know, parse sentences before you have a vocabulary. Because knowing words doesn't mean shit if you can't understand what they mean composed together.
>>
>>21682344
>>21682348
maybe read the whole guide then? you might also want to consider that this language isn't for you if you've already tried and given up a few times. the barrier to entry is pretty high because of the writing system and if you can't get through the initial months where you feel like you're drowning and like its hopeless you prolly wont make it. no shame in that either.
>>
>>21682365
The kana is easy enough to read, so the language itself is easy enough to grasp. It's all in the chinese runes that utterly destroys my ability to learn anything without kana because I'm expected to remember the one specific image of a million+ of them like I have a photographic memory or I'm Dr. Strange.
>>
>>21682377
>>The kana is easy enough to read, so the language itself is easy enough to grasp.
This is not how language works. Yes, Japan has a very reduced syllabary. No, this doesn't make the language easy to grasp.
>>
>>21682377
>The kana is easy enough to read, so the language itself is easy enough to grasp
don't really see the causative relationship there lol

in any case learning kanji really isn't that hard, essentially anybody can do it. over a hundred millions japs did it, are you saying you're dumber than all of them? id bet my ass you havent even really tried to learn vocabulary. as i said before consider that this isn't for you.

Do I have to learn and remember which kanji makes up a hiragana word?
Like instead of just learning them one way (reading a kanji word and understanding) but also knowing which kanji I would use to write a word.
The Yotsuba reading pack had cards for both ways just wondering if this is something I should be doing for everything.
>>
>>21682377
nigga have u even tried yet lol. u sound like me when i first started and hadn't actually done shit to remember vocab but was just freaked out by how complicated kanji looked
some anki will do you good
also while you're drilling basic vocab look out for the pieces of kanji that look identical ("radicals") don't worry about what they're called just get used to noticing them. it'll help make kanji feel less daunting when you can point out common features in their appearances. and of course as you learn more words you'll see readings of the same kanji repeat in different words, like
感覚 かんかく
感触 かんしょく
触手 しょくしゅ
don't expect every kanji to have the same reading for every word its in, just notice when they do and it will make it all seem much less daunting.
>>
>>21682423
I would say no since your just trying to break into reading and when you do come across words like that when your reading multiple times then that's when you "should try to remember it".

typing all that out for anon made me realize how much i love kanji now compared to when i first started haha. when i started i was intrigued by them but also scared as fuck of them
now they feel like collecting pieces of the huge puzzle that is nihongo
learning new words and the kanji within them feels like adding runes to my collection
or upgrading the ones i already have (when i learn new words or readings for them)
good stuff

kanji makes vocab easier to remember. the proof is that hiragana words are way harder to remember (in my anecdotal experience)

It's also not like you can't improve your accent after the fact, which is what I have been constantly doing with English since I got fluent. It's also mostly a matter of having enough opportunity to speak in that language and getting used to producing those sounds.

It's a sign of a general underlying issue. Which is mainly that these are people who foremost want to use their Japanese as a means of showing off, instead of using it as a means of communication.
