Day 6 - Less Anki and Less LazinessToday hasn't been all that great for Chinese. Today I got really lazy and just didn't immerse much at all nor work on pinyin as much as I should have. However, I think I'm going to hold off on anki for a bit and just focus on hammering it down and fine some useful videos on YouTube.I am seeing myself fall into the trap of "I'll do this tomorrow", but then I say the same thing tomorrow. So, in order to get back on track with what I need to do, I finally finished adding all of my tasks in habitica. Now I feel more motivated to get things done and not let myself die over and over again lol.Tomorrow will be a much better day. I'm going to get off of the phone at night and go to bed. And I am going to wake up early in the morning and start my day off right.
>>21001594i think he was talking about dying in habitica. unless this is a brilliantly subtle double meaning and he is in fact a kami-tier troll.

Rap/Trap is one of my favorite music genres to listen to. It is easy to listen to and it is extremely catchy. But man, the more I think about what I am listening to, the more I hate it and feel bad for listening to it. I think I’m gonna cut degenerate rap/trap out all together.
>>21001732wow ive been having similar sentiments lately. so i started listening to chill hop instrumentals, calming videogame soundtracks or electronic, psychedelic stuff instead and i notice a big difference in my mindset.

Been "learning" Japanese for two years now. My production is still super trash to the point I still don't feel comfortable writing this post in Japanese.. i have been just playing vn's (nukige) and reading eromanga intermixed with a bit of core6k, but no new words so basically just reviewing the 4.2k~ cards I've viewed. my reading really isn't bad, mainly based on my innate ability to understand the dialogue. I really only ever cared for djt guide and what it espoused as far as learning methods. Haven't been here in years, can someone advise me on what I should be doing to get back into the swing of things at a rigorous/academic level? tl;dr pls spoonfeed me advice, I've lost a lot of drive since the only thing I use Japanese for I can do wellHow nice the thread I decide to post in has my waifui for the OP !
>>21002237Keep reading and start learning new words again. You won't get anywhere with 4k vocab. You are at the point where you can keep getting better just by having fun.
>>21002237I mean if you can do everything you want to do you should just keep that up because that is all you are going to do.If you want to learn just for the sake of better japanese then it might be a good idea to get a japanese pen pal. This would give you motivation to improve output, and learn more.
>>21002237>at a rigorous/academic levelur in the wrong place

Day 1I'm thinking about using subs2srs on all the dramas with Japanese subtitles I can find, for my first 1k/3.5k bilingual sentences, following the MIA Perfectionist Approach. I will not watch anime of any kind, I will only watch 3D media because I love real Japanese girls.
has anyone ever posted the screencaps of matt trying to "red-pill" a japanese person on language acquisition in japanese
>>21002135Dies irae is basically moege. It's easier than Twinkle Crusaders. That's a meme.>>21002152Muramasa is legitimately "difficult" to read in the sense that it uses more obscure words, longer sentences, and stranger sentence patterns than most games. And there's no way in hell you're going to understand the prologue or any of the action scenes if you don't actually know Japanese and have to look up five words a sentence, unlike moege.
Oh yeah and it requires an IQ of 180 and ten rereads to understand on anything other than a surface level, as well as a detailed understanding of the history of Japanese visual novels themed around heroism and a competent grasp on Japanese history.

Hi. I don't know japanese. I just learned about "Yojijukugo" (4 character compounds). I was wondering how possible it is to modify an existing one and have the new one have a meaning that will be immediately understood. For example, there's this one I like: 人馬一体. It means unity of a horse and its rider. If I change the second character so that it is 人剣一体 will it mean "unity of a weapon and its wielder" or will people just go like "what the fuck does that made up thing mean?"?Thanks.
>>21002710if you google that people already had the exact same idea so the answer is obviously that they will understand
>>21002710yes but you better be really goddamn confident in your command of the language

Why is RTK so hated?
>>21004082Because people here have never tried it and judge it just because it doesn't teach you readings, and makes you put off learning grammar/vocab.I'm using RTK right now and it's one of the best decisions I've made.
>>21004082Because there's a few people here who have either finished it or done most of it and concluded the effort and time it takes isn't worth it.
>>21003933http://www.j-cat.org/en/page/interpretbetween N3 and N2. If that's good you have to decide for yourself, I guess.
>>21004082Imagine spending years slamming your dick between kanji, and then some kid comes along and goes>lol i just did rtk in 3 months kanji don't bother me noneIt's kids skipping the traditional hazing ritual that drives them mad. Also the people who just want to get fluent by watching anime for five years don't like the idea that dedicated study might be useful.
>>21004092>>21004107I completed RTK, I still advocate against doing it right at the startIt's good if you already know quite a bit of Japanese and want to learn to handwrite, that's what I used it for
>>21004114>lol i just did rtk in 3 months kanji don't bother me nonesaid no one ever
>>21004130Says me at my current rate, lol
How do y'all do vocab mining?
>>21004115But this makes zero sense. The benefits of RTK are that you get to learn vocab much easier because you can instantly recognise any kanji and know what it means. Either do RTK at the start so you can make full use of it, or don't do it at all. To deliberately do it halfway through is utterly illogical.
>>21004151See how that works for you when you actually try to read things
>>21004163Yea it worksI know some basic Japanese grammar (and vocab), so I'm able to make out the meanings of a lot more sentences now. It's fun
>>21004160>you get to learn vocab much easier because you can instantly recognise any kanji and know what it meansIt's not true that doing RTK will allow you to instantly recognize all the kanji it covers. But anyway, just read and mine vocab and you'll grow accustomed to the kanji without having to do RTK, and you'll be more motivated to continue since you're learning the language and consuming interesting material. Maybe doing the 500 most frequent kanji using the lazy kanji method is a good idea, but RTK is stupid.
>>21004082Why not just use KKLC? It's like RTK but good.
>>21004170>It's not true that doing RTK will allow you to instantly recognize all the kanji it coversIncorrect. Anything you can produce from scratch you can also recognise. Might take a bit of practice to get that information instantly accessible, but it is there.>just read and mine vocab and you'll grow accustomed to the kanji without having to do RTKAnd you'll learn your kanji inefficiently, with zero logical build-up and radicals being introduced in a completely random order. Also a good chance that you end up endlessly kicking the can down the road as more and more similar looking kanji appear because you never bothered to properly learn any of them. It's also the most natural way to learn, and yet kanji is what people bitch about the most. How come people who do RTK don't bitch about kanji despite having a "stupid" study method?
>>21004170>Maybe doing the 500 most frequent kanji using the lazy kanji method is a good ideaIt is, actually. I did like the first 500 without mnemonics but with a keyword on memrise and stopped after that, now I can easily learn a kanji by seeing/learning like two or three words with it. I couldn't imagine going on with keywords, it gets boring after a while.
>>21004222>Might take a bit of practice to get that information instantly accessibleHence it's not true that if you do RTK you can instantly recognize all kanji?>And you'll learn your kanji inefficientlyThat's OK. If you mine the words you notice a lot you'll be seeing them so much that it'll be a natural SRS. The cool thing about doing things inefficiently is that they're more fun and you're more likely to stick with it.>Also a good chance that you end up endlessly kicking the can down the road as more and more similar looking kanji appear because you never bothered to properly learn any of themThat's not a problem. It's pretty easy to tell similar kanji apart if you make a mnemonic for them as you come across them.>How come people who do RTK don't bitch about kanji despite having a "stupid" study method?RTK makes kanji a lot easier to deal with. It's just not worth the effort.
if you meditated 6 hours a day that would make your japanese learning fucking NUTTY but we make concessions on efficiency based on what we like to do and considering most people dont wanna do something as fuckin autistic as rtgay then i think we can safely shit on it
Imagine not being able to write characters by hand
what's wrong with only learning to write the most common characters so that you can do it if you find yourself in the extremely unlikely situation that such an ability would come in handy
>>21004222> And you'll learn your kanji inefficientlyThis isn't directed at you specifically but so many Japanese learners are obsessed with this idea of efficiency but have no concrete reasons to believe that one method is any more efficient than another beyond their own made-up theories about how language acquisition works.
>>21003883when you got here>>21004170i have trouble mining because all the moon runes look the samertk has helped an immense amount for this
>>21004392>i have trouble mining because all the moon runes look the samethey stop looking the same the more familiar you are with them which will happen naturally as you continue reading and mining.>rtk has helped an immense amount for thisyea it helps a lot. it's just not worth it.
Ok so I just started RTK today. Is it fine if I don't do RTK exlusively? Can I continue doing grammar, vocab and reading/listening or will that affect my brain somehow? Also, how many kanji a day should I aim for? Is 50 too much? Is 25 too little?
meditating for six hours is a good start but come at me once you start meditating instead of sleeping, that's when you learn japanese
>>21004400>Is it fine if I don't do RTK exlusively?yes>Can I continue doing grammar, vocab and reading/listeningyesbut good luck doing even 25 a day while reading and listening. you'll soon realize how autistic and annoying it is to do.
>>21004400>Is it fine if I don't do RTK exlusively?>Can I continue doing grammar, vocab and reading/listening or will that affect my brain somehow? It's fine, but don't overwork yourself. It's generally better to focus on one thing at a time>Also, how many kanji a day should I aim for? Is 50 too much? Is 25 too little?50 is too much, you'll burn yourself out like me. 25 is a good amount in my opinion. Honestly it might be best for you to find out how many you personally feel comfortable doing in a day yourself, cause it can vary
>>21004388Learning 亠, 凶, 厶, 冂, and 隹 before you learn 離 is logically the faster way. Otherwise everyone would be learning 鬱 as one of their first kanji, no?
So I've been doing Wanikani for a while now, and I find it imperfect but pretty useful, as it teaches both meaning and reading unlike RTK, and provides some vocab to help make it stick. However it's quite slow in my opinion and the price is another disadvantage. Should I ditch it and go with another ressource or stick with it?
>>21004082Because it's shit. Also >>21004213 this.
>>21004433>鬱i love this example because even before i did RTK i could instantly recognize 鬱 because of how distinct it was from all the other kanji lol
>>21004400Of course you can do whatever you want at the same time. It's better to start low, maybe 10 a day and work your way up and see how much you can handle. It takes a long fucking time If you actually make mnemonics and visualise them properly + dealing with reviews. Reconsider doing RTK at all unless you really want to write by hand.
>>21004400just recently startedin 10 days i've done through lesson 8, 184 kanjii had a few midterms, so it waylaid me, but i kept up on flashcardsi'm adding another lesson todayit's been a good challenge for me, has worked well
Yeah, of course, but could you write it from memory?
>>21004438if you use koohii they have readings on the flashcards
>>21004438I think KKLC has readings and it's a book so you can go at your own pace
>>21004452>It takes a long fucking time If you actually make mnemonics and visualise them properly + dealing with reviewsI will never do anything in my life as difficult and boring for as prolonged a period of time as RTK. I put myself on a 2 minute timer to copy/modify a story and then to visualize that story for each new kanji. Some kanji would take more than 2 minutes, so learning 25 kanji a day it took me an average of an hour to learn them.
>>21004400You can do whatever, you won't hurt yourself. You can start at 25 and work your way up to 50 if you have the time. In the end you're only actually "learning" a handful of radicals every day, everything else is making up facts and puns and stories, and your mind has practically infinite room for that.
>>21004464>400 kanjiJust curious, how long did it take in wanikani to get that far?
>>21004473oops deleted post because I already had an answerabout 3 months and a half, with about 9 days on each level, although I heard the fastest possible was 7 days on each level.>>21004460>>21004463thanks I'll check them out
>>21004433>>21004447Exactly. Arguments could be made in favor of both bottom-up and top-down, until someone does a formal study there's no way to know which is better or if it even makes any statistically-significant difference. My only point is in the absence of hard proof people should just use whatever approach they personally enjoy and find productive.
>>21004482>about 3 months and a halfJesus that's slowI'm only 2 weeks into RTK and I'm at 400 kanji
>>21004497Yeah it's pretty slow, but at the same time I know at least one word for each kanji, sometimes more, because of the vocabulary provided, so that's something to consider too.
>>21004507When I started I did RTK and C6K afterwards in about 7.5 months. I think that's more or less equivalent to what Wanikani does, and you can finish Wanikani at its absolute fastest in one year. Wanikani is made to deliberately slow you down to get your money.
>>21004483>learn words>learn kanji with them>dedicate actual time and energy to the ones that prove to be a pain in the ass>don't waste time on easy shitWinning strat that basically saves you having to do dumb shit for like 1000 of the Kanji.
Stop this stupid bickering already learn wago word by word and then the kanji it useslearn kango by learning kanji
>>21004517I don't think it's made that way just for milking money, I think the idea behind it is more of a staying manageable for most people kind of thing, but I totally agree that it's speed is just not cutting it, which is the reason why I was asking for opinions in the first place.Out of curiosity, how many kanjis did you do per day with RTK?
>>21004532Started out doing ~20 to 30 a day, then once I got the hang of things after the first 500 or so I moved up to 50.

Sometimes ago, an anon said you learn japanese better while wearing girl clothes, so I made the experiment today just for you guys.I went stealing my sister bra and pantsu and launched a session of anki.I didn't really have the impression my retention was better, but I understand the logic: you learn better while being engaged emotionally, and I sure was aroused. is 義 that common that it's a grave error he didn't remember the reading (but knew the meaning)?
it means he doesnt know japanese but did flashcards
>>21004519this is so logical and wise. plus drilling all radical/“primitive” structures. this strategy truly beats all others. through doing this i literally have only encountered around 200~ kanji that are genuinely difficult to decipher from other similar looking ones, and that number is even less when i have context. making a personalized deck where you show yourself the similar looking kanji you’ve encountered and have to point out which one is which by looking at the radicals or whatever, would take WAY less time than going through all 2000+ needlessly. even writing can be practiced as a regular part of word reviews if you really want to get good at that. just copy the words you’re reviewing, doing each kanji via their radicals, until you can write those kanji off head. only giving special focus to the ones that are difficult to remember.
>>21005033That's 蛙々 for you!
As a 外人, you must be fluent in at least three different languages before you even attempt Japanese.
>>21005075what really sucks about this is that english and japanese are the only languages that matter

>>21004373>what's wrong with only learning to write the most common characters so that you can do it if you find yourself in the extremely unlikely situation that such an ability would come in handynothing at all. learning to write the most basic 100-200 and saving the rest for the indefinite future while getting lots of input is a very smart approach

>>21002699There's enough grease in this video to actually squeeze me through the front door for the first time in a decade. It's not fair that he's keeping it all for himself.
>>21005256The fact that people out there are proud of slowly spoonfeeding beginners instead of telling them to read more and use a dictionary is honestly kind of annoying. Sure, helping people understand what they're reading is good, but stepping them through a convoluted rationalization for some rule that doesn't actually have anything but intuition behind it? That's not actually language learning, that's linguistic mental masturbation.

Hello there. My name is Dawson, I'm 20 years old and living in the United States. I'm someone who has spent a lot of my life trying to learn lots of skills and bits of knowledge that interest me. For instance, I was reading quantum physics books when I was in 5th grade (even did a presentation on string theory), started learning to draw in 8th grade and have reached a fairly satisfactory level by now (but plan to improve that more in the coming years), I've dabbled in music theory a bit, I program (web development, C++, Julia, and various other things), and most recently I've been studying Japanese and stenography. I've been studying for about 6 months, only roughly following the advice Matt gives on his channel. I've made tremendous and very tangible progress, but I've definitely been slacking a fair bit compared to how much work I'm "supposed" to be putting in. I definitely want to fix that soon though, which I guess is part of my motivation for joining this server. Although for me it's definitely more about the journey than the destination. I'd rather take my time and have fun than work myself to death and reach the end faster. In any case, it's nice to meet you all, and I look forward to future discussions.
