Hey just posting for critique, anyone i guess can use this thread as well.

Had a project to redesign an ad we thought was bad on the subway while keeping it similiar.
>>
lol the one on the subway looks better.

another failed "post your work" thread.
>>

existing one lined up the text per step nicely, also the "ON SALE NOW" text doesn't line up, top or bottom, with the other text.

Typically titles like this wouldn't include a period/full stop. Plus the "outline" style of the Penguin logo doesn't hold up so well - the stroke weight at the top and bottom is compromised.

The revised colour choices are nice though, it's trendy at the moment and moves away from cliche "thriller" aesthetic.

I think it's not the best idea to mix the standard type with the ALL CAPS. Take a look at the cover of "TH1RT3EN" (Steve Cavanagh) - the tagline, for example, has 2 different styles. Use this instead of having normal "By" and all caps author name?
>>
>>357855
Thanks for the critique, i feel like i messed a lot up trying to get the Es to align, when they weren't it just looked so close it felt off to me, but i might have forced it too much.

But yea i'm looking at the Thirteen poster and will probably go for to type styles as well so thanks
>>
>>357814
It's sad that you didn't want to use the stairs lines , yeah it's an obvious thing to do but sometime the obvious is for the better your text block seems off because of that.

Else, basically the same things as >>357855

Use some spacing between the Title and the bottom part, it's confusing, use another typo and maybe center it (i f you keep your top part center with no modifications.
>>
>>357814
Honestly I don't remember seeing a single good example of design on /gd/ made by 4channers.
Why should opinion of people with shitty to none skills matter.

First of all, why do morons keep messing this shit up?

>>
>>357879
I just couldn't find the source picture without text on it so i ended up mutilating to stairs to get rid of the text lol i could maybe figure something out though

I am an illustrator who is wanting to have some graphic design pieces in my folio. Would ideas like this be too different from what agencies are looking for? Is the type getting lost with the detail in the background? I would appreciate any feedback.

yes it does get a bit too hard to read at the 'lin' part of coastlines
beautiful Illustration but it really doesnt say 'scotland' to me,its far too warm and mediterrainan .
alternate titles:
-Scotland in the Summer
-the coastlines of corsica
maybe play around with the font size between the two lines, at the moment its top heavy, try shrinking the top line down so its the same width, 'scotland' is a strong word and if you want to evoke a sense of place its more important than the 'coastlines' bit.

taking time over these details will show that you consider the type just as important as the image (as any designer should)

ok do me
project I just finished, brief was the name (unchangeable) merged with lens flares as a rebrand for a photographer who was kind of known in festival/events circuit but wanted to smarten up and go after more corporate work.
I think its one of my cleanest but as I never really studied graphic design (I did Illustration at university - detailed pencil drawings and digital texture collage) I still feel like im figuring it out more with each job

So far I'm liking the layout, but I'm still trying to find a proper place to put the quote. It's not due until Wednesday, so tear it to shreds.

"imperative" is just a widow I would fix.

It may be just the way my professors and boss taught me, but I was told to never end a line with a one letter word like "I" or "A". It seems a bit risky to use two letter words, but you can usually let it slide. That's why I highlighted the "I" in the last paragraph.

Everything is very clean and minimal which i'm guessing is the point.

If it were me, however, I would differentiate the intro and pull quotes from the rest of the text.
i.e. I would italicize the intro copy and bump up the size of the pull quote type a pt or two maybe?

Also, please hang the quotations in the Header.

I like this spread though, it's nice and breezy.
I'm not great at minimalism, so I wouldn't be offended if you didn't take some of the more subjective advice.

>>358391
Good catch on the widow. I'm decent at catching them, but always find more with a second set of eyes. I didn't notice the "I" hanging out by himself and I would agree with your peers on ending a line with a single letter.

I'll try italicizing the intro copy. I'm always more inclined to adjusting tint or bringing up size before giving it a tilt.

Those "quotations" are something I need to fix. As you can tell right now, they're inch marks. As you pointed out I do need to hang them.

Point of this assignment is to practice hierarchy, but this is also my style. I'm not much for fluff. I just want to stick to the grid and the basics before I start adding things in.

Thanks for the critique.

Here's one from last weeks assignment. I have some issues with it and I do have the chance to redo it if I'd like.

Got sidetracked from assignment. Tell me what needs to be change. Pls
>>
>>358547
I like that, if you want to change something maybe try thinner stroke on top and make the «an exploration» line fill justify with the block above (fill the same space as the strokes block)

Bottom align the bottom left block ( dr. Hans + square +every thing, spacing are fine btw) with N.
Try to horizontal and vertical center your main block (everything that are within the 4dots corners.

Get rid of the wannabe circle under the N of moon.

Why green tho? You should try some reddish/goldish or greyish ( for grey take the lightest you have already in the composition) colors, but it’s more about personal taste here.

You did quite the job for an assignment I guess, all the critics above are details, but I know teachers/instructors like to bodied students with those.
>>
>>358551
I should of mentioned the assignment. It was supposed to be a poster for color theory and how it applies to emotion. One of my emotions was envy which is why the green is the color choice. I changed some elements to relate to space and stray away from the assignment, which is why the green is the color choice. I like the idea of using red/gold and maybe a dark blue.

This isn’t how it’ll look for my assignment, but I did want to polish this before storing it away for the quarter.

Thanks for the critique man.

Also our professors have the class critique each other’s work in small groups and occasionally they’ll step in to guide the critique or question someone’s stance on something. If we want a critique from the professor we usually have to seek them out.

really like the typo, the background with the grid doesn't really do it for me tho. I wouldn't necessarily associate purpleish tints with confusion, but i've never thought about certain behavioural or mental states having a certain colour - but now that i think about, i'd rather see confusion as as red, yellow and green blending together, like an indecisive stoplight.

I get the reference, but limit your color palette, it looks busy. Using blue in place of black is a step in the right direction, now try for blue, white, one additional color, and a different shade/tint of blue.
>>
>>362903
I like the aesthetic, and the color choices are good.
The diamond could stand to be a bit thicker, to match the angles on the other suits and add proper balance to the four corners of the card. Similarly, it you should incorporate those same angles into the club. Try dividing the spade into segments and see if it works as a replacement.
Speaking of angles, the background line pattern should follow that same angle to tie everything together.
The shape in the center is neat, but I'm afraid that the thin lines could get lost when printed out at a smaller size. If necessary, thicken those up and follow suit with the lines in the background pattern.
I didn't even notice the connecting lines on the spade and club until I zoomed in, so those could probably be removed altogether.
The typeface is a bit plain, but that's not a bad thing. It looks out of place, but that could be fixed by matching the thickness with the line thickness of the other elements. Try rotating the type to flow with the same angle as everything else and see if that works.

The "can crush" and arrows would look better if they didn't partially occupy shapes. Treat the shapes like binary pixels, and for anything above 50% coverage just fill it in, otherwise leave them grey.

Hello my friends, today I have designed my first poster in illustrator! As you can see, it is a donut in space and it is very funny haha! I look forward to sharing with you again. Have a blessed day, my friends!

Bottom is the logos, top is the uni logo

For a garden club. Was going to put "Garden Club" along the bottom of the circle, once i figure out how to do that in paint.net lel.

Are the flowers still too heavy? should i make the centers white in the full color version?
>>
>>363091
The flowers look good. But I feel like you could do a lot with this to differentiate it while retaining linked elements.Like, maybe the shield is a garden trowel. Or even ditch the original mark altogether and use the three flowers and sash somewhere else.

honestly i just have a vague image in my head of a 70s aesthetic, i can't really point to a specific source of inspiration. i mean there's a lot of designers doing the same stuff as me, like wellwishers88 on instagram for example. but i've been doing this sort of stuff way before i even knew other people did similar things.

my main advice would be to design stuff constantly, those "one poster every day" challenges really help. you should see my designs from three years ago. god awful.

i also listen to a lot of boards of canada when i design stuff. helps me get in the right mood.

Go for a binder outline so the binder is actually black instead of blue.
Lose the "B" inside of it.
Don't use a stylized or display font for your logo. Go with a simple, legible font. If you like the monospace serif look, try Google's Cutive Mono (pic related).

Going with future vibe, and it being a 'secret' project - what about a glitch affect? I know you mentioned going simple/legible on the font, but I think I can maybe distort the binder itself?

Try for more sharp, geometric shapes and uniform stroke weights. I'm not in the photography business, but I imagine a personal logo shouldn't remind me of 90s clipart.

use an actual italics font instead of stretching them and I think i'd be better to just get a flag vector for the F. , it'd look better and the name is already on the bottom so i wouldn't worry about confusion. but over all the idea is simple enough, I assume it's for a flag website.

the two on the left. The bottom one left is interesting but needs to be refined. I'm not a big fan of the font. I would try either more expressive fonts, or more blue collar font. The machined, kind of mid century, not quite geometric sans serif type of font has been way overdone, and looks disingenuous for a construction company.

>>
>>364434
first of all you need to prevent banding on the gradients (the lines in the gradient). You need to dither the gradients. I don't know what program you are using, illustrator sucks for this but photoshop is good.
The shadows give the look of the objects being flat pieces of paper, especially the squares. You could rounded the corners of the squares to help this. And maybe give the squares some thickness similar to the circles and pills.
The drop shadows are also no convincing because they don't account for the surface below. The shadows assume a flat surface. And when there are two different surfaces that are different distances below the shadow, it looks even less convincing. Shadows have to adapt to the contours of the shapes they are cast on to. It's more of a pain, but you should be drawing your own shadows.
The noise is too heavy, and then non-existent. I would either make the more prominent noise less so, or use more noise where there isn't much. I can't tell if you intended it to look like this, but given that the pink to yellow shape has a lot more noise then the purple to pink shapes, I'm assuming it's unintentional.
It's a good start.
>>
Hey guys,
would really appreciate some feedback on this.
I work for a small web and print shop and we're rebranding. The new brand is going to be WP and we're dropping our old name, so it has to be clear that the name of the company is WP. I'm partial to my design on the right, but the one on the left is more clear. Do you guys have any experience sacrificing style for function? also any general feedback would be appreciated. My boss also wants to see a sans-serif version which I think would look terrible, but he is convinced is still very fresh and "modern"

>>
>>364443
In regards to serif vs sans serif, trendy serif fonts are very "in" right now. However, if the goal is to make it look modern, Im not sure that the slab serif and layout convey that. It looks to me sort of like an old timey badge/crest, especially the way you placed "1998" on either side of WP. Finally, I wouldn't worry about legibility with any of these -it seems pretty clear to me.

the mark is golden as far as i'm concerned. You need to work on the wordmark. You should put just as much love into the wordmark as the "CB" mark. I get why you chose that font, maybe try something that complements it instead of echoing the mark

Thanks for the reply. I'm using affinity designer/ photo. They're decent alternatives but have their weaknesses. Too poor ATM to afford the creative suite.

I didn't think about the shadows applying to the shape below, the banding or the over/under prevalence of noise.

Thank you for your insight.

I was actually trying to go for a paper 3D cutout type of look, and I thought the noise resembled construction paper.

Since you can't tell I clearly didn't do it well enough.

I have no idea, how to draw shadows, I always struggled with that when photo-shopping photos, but I'll look into it. It's actually for a scrolling parallax effect on my portfolio site.

Thanks, Anon.

Also can anyone recommend a more active site or resource for critiques? When it comes to creative things, I find critiques are the best way to grow.

Foreword, I know the big heading and its subheading are slightly missaligned on the elft side, and the bottom right subheading for the red text in the rectangle doesn't quite fit the others who have a second line. The second thing I'm not entirely sur eof how to fix.

No to the wide letter spacing. I would say try a less expressive font for the small text, maybe futura. And the rounded text doesn’t match at all. Lean into the harsh jaggedness, get rid of the roundly font.

Again no to the wide spacing. Wide spacing is ok, but you are way overdoing. I think this would be more interesting if the text was a lot bigger.

Google "magazine cover" and copy some of the ideas to get comfortable with how layouts work. Also, the magazine title should be more substantial, make it a lot bigger and fill the width of the image. think a heavier narrower font would be better, and because the title is so long, a narrower font would be better. I would try to get a hold of font called Knockout. You should remove the outline on the text. As for the bottom text, again look at other covers to see what they do. Usually they use some variation in the text style and colors. I don't like the shadow under the text, the stair step alignment, and the lines are too close together. Spacing them out more would show that they are separate titles.

I threw together some variations just to test concepts. Changed the bottom font to Gilroy which I do like more. Did not end up finding a better font for the logo itself. I feel the whole point of the logo is to tie together the F and flagpole imagery, but it seems the more F-like I make the flag the less it looks like the US flag.
>>
>>357851
The one on the right is objectively better because it makes a better advertisement. Without zooming into OP's picture I can tell the ad is about a book, a little about the book from the quote, and that its currently on sale. Imagine walking in a crowded subway and seeing left pic, you would have to be a foot away to see want its about.

Also, imagine being the retard that believes so confidently that edgier = better
>>

You have a real cute style, but work on your composition. The tree branch touching the top of the tower really bothers me, and I feel like the tree's silhouette shape is also unnecessarily complex and cuts the background into odd distracting shapes. Thumbnails/studies before you start is a must, and should help catch things like this.

Type feels like a bit of an afterthought stuffed way down in the corner like that.

Aside from the type stuff the other anon mentioned, I would work on the drawing itself. The explosion looks cheesy and slapped-on. A more carefully worked shape (aim for a nice rhythm of short and long points and an overall balance). The stroke around it is also way thin and distracting, I would kill the outlines around the film strip entirely and make the stroke around the explosion thicker.

Oh, and the white stroke isn't working. Make that stroke transparent, ya dig? Your logomark should ideally not be dependent on color and be able to be boiled down to simple black & white. I scribbled you a shitty diagram cause I gotta run, hopefully you understand. The photo bg is just there to show you the transparency I was talking about.
