Earlier today I noticed that my CPU had "co-op mode" capabilities, i e being able to support both a 32-bit and a 64-bit OS. I had 32-bit OS because I thought it was the only one I could have since it's an old InteI Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz. I have since switched to an AMD64 build of Debian. I thought I should share some benchmarks.

(lower is better) = (LB)
(higher is better) = (HB)
[32-bit result] vs [64-bit result]

>hardinfo benchmarks
Blowfish: 6.47 s vs 6.67 s (LB)
Cryptohash: 312.35 MiB/s vs 314.94 MiB/s (HB)
Fibonacci: 4.01 s vs 2.75 s (LB)
n-Queens: 9.19 s vs 8.74 s (LB)
FPU FFT: 3.15 s vs 3.14 s (LB)
FPU Raytracing: 17.18 s vs 5.99 s

>Python3 hashlib hashing (single-core)
>MD5
.71 MHash/s vs .91 MHash/s (HB)
>SHA512
.38 MHash/s vs .57 MHash/s (HB)

>sysbench --test=cpu run
total time: 13.9749s vs 9.7255s (LB)

>sysbench --test=fileio --file-test-mode=seqwr run
>128 files, 16Mb each; 2Gb total file size; Block size 16Kb
total time: 78.9015s vs 16.4837s (LB)

cheers

So why is raytracing so much lower while others are unchanged?

welcome to 2003, glad you could join us

because x64 uses SSE instead of old ass x87 FPU code

I have the exact same CPU in my PC for 11 years now I believe and if not for GPU that has problems with YouTube now it would be bretty gomfy desu

cpu from 2009 I believe

yeah. I wasn't aware of this. had even older CPU's before.

I may have been doing that inadvertently for... 5 years...

i have a c2d machine with 4gb ram, is there *any* reason to use 64bit software over less bloated and efficient 32bit masterrace?

first amd64 cpus came out in 2003
linux actually had support for amd64 in 2001 (yea, before any hardware came out)
