I've bought t450s week ago and installed linux. Any tips how to tune tlp to improve battery life? I've set it to charge only to 90% but tlpstat shows me both internal and external battery degraded to 3/4 of its original capacity, so should I just set charge to 100% and not bother?

If price isn't really a concern I'd go for the T440p out of those with a trackpad swap if you're looking for the best one specs wise, it weighs about the same as the T430.
If you want a smaller and lighter one, go for the X230.

>>70169146
Set it to 80% and unplug your battery whenever you're using it with an AC adapter attached and not charging the battery.

so do we just ignore that fact that Intel CPUs have security flaws when considering Thinkpads? I'm not memeing and sincerely asking. Because I'm about to pull the trigger on a Thinkpad A485 that comes out to around $865. I was wondering if I should get the T480 instead seeing as they're the same chassis, just intel vs AMD.

The AMD model also has a realtek based LAN porn and I'm not sure how thrilled I am about that.

Oh then it depends if you need the eggsra dime you get with the additional 10%. If you do then just charge it to 100%.
In terms of optimizing tlp, well you can go through the settings but it comes with a power-optimized config out of the box so it's not really necessary.

These EU ebay sellers are a bunch of hardasses, goddamn. A standard hdd/4gb ram T440p with dents on both corners of the palm rest and a crack on one of the lid covers and they're still asking 180 euro plus shipping.

because he's salty he can't buy new so then settles for a cum encrusted, smoke/dust filled model that's 9+ years old.
>>
>>70169682
I've been looking at the auctions, but I don't know if I just undervalue tp's or people overvalue them. I was following an auction for a T430 with hdd/4gb ram, and the final bid was nearly 160 euro.
There's a guy on our local craigslist variant that's selling a X240 with 8gb ram and a 256 ssd for 220 euro, but that's a bit over the budget I set out for myself, and I'm worried the X series might be too small. I've never been able to see one in person though, so I might be worrying about nothing.

They go for £200 refurbished on Amazon, seems a bit steep.
I just want a solid foundation to upgrade, I'm not bothered about storage because I'll use my own SSD.

>>
>>70170765

>>70170738
P50 ah fuck.. idk whatever 5th gen systems dell had out...
Dell went full retard on their number schemes, so every fucking number is confusing as fuck
3xxx Series - Budget - Like Vostro
5xxx Series - Business - Like in between E5xxx and E6xxx
7xxx Series - High End - Slimmer than E6xxx models

So i THINK their second numbers mean the screen size or class type
x4xx would be 14"
x5xx would be 15"
x7xx would be 17

So then the Precision 7510 would be the "top of the line one" and maybe the 5510 would be one to consider too, that has less stuff in it. I think, Dell blended their models to a confusing way to which I stopped keeping up with them.

Buying thinkpads new is not worth it and I'm not sure on the pricing but take a look at the T480 and X1C5. I guess some of the new Yogas might be worth taking a look at but I know absolutely nothing about those.

>>70171632

new thinkpads are still pretty good, it's hard to give a good suggestion without you telling us what's important in a laptop for you
battery life, performance and portability always come at expense of each other but something like T480 balances all three of them pretty well
>>
>>70171494
T480s will probably be up your alley.
A485 if you want to save some dosh with a slightly less performing AMD CPU.

Avoid E Series ThinkPads, 11e and... I think those ones if you're buying new.

Remember ThinkPad, not Legion, not IdeaPad or Lenovo G Series, these are consumer build quality laptops that are far different than a ThinkPad when it comes to build quality. Also try not tot confuse the Lenovo Yoga with the ThinkPad Yoga, Lenovo markets any 2 in 1 tablet convertible laptop as a Yoga.

>>
>>70172213
Yeah, for some reason, I thought about you and your project the other day and now I've elected to do something similar to my X200. Mine will be a little different than yours because I have a 3x3 WLAN card, so I want three antennas, and luckily I have a 128GB drive with a little PCB, so if I remove the SATA-sized enclosure I'll actually have enough room to install two RP-SMA ports in the SATA bay, and I'll also have a third one out my RJ11 slot since I also don't have a modem. So I won't need to drill out my Kensington like you did! I'll also be able to easily remove two of my antennas since they'll only be attached to the drive bay cover, I can just order a second one without holes for $3.

Question 1: can you show me what part you got from Ali or Ebay for your UFL to RPSMA adapters? .. or did you just take them off some desktop WiFi card?
Question 2: do you have a big antenna and a little antenna because you got better signals that way (I know larger antennas aren't as good when nearer to the router) .. or just because that's what you had?
Also, any suggestions or regrets?
>>

Nice. Post pics when you're done! Questions out of order:
I have a big onr and small one because its a cute when I fold them down for transport. Pic related. One is off of my router.
The part I ordered was off amazon, "CHAOHANG New 2 x 6dBi RP-SMA Dual Band 2.4GHz 5GHz + 2 x 35cm U.fl / IPEX"
No regrets. I love it. Im going to do it to one of my other x200's. But move the power port so it's pointing out back, and that way ill have one antenna on each side (one where the power port usually is, and the other basically where my large antenna is now)
Good timing by the way. I havent been on this thread for a few weeks now, just happened to check it after I got out of class on a whim. Been busy with school and learning programming.
>>
>>70172987
Oh, forgot, when I used two large antenna I got about 2% better connection to all my signals than with one large and one small, it's just that I like the appearance of one of each, plus they fold nicely. If I do the other one with one on each side then I'll do two larges or two smalls.
And here's a screenshot of the part I used. Nothing fancy.

Nabbed a T420 with i5/4GB/128GB SSD for $20. I'm happy i've finally got a laptop that I can primarily run a Linux distro on (other laptops had dGPUs preventing this from happening smoothly) but I'm fucking pissed about the whitelist and lack of ivy bridge support. Guess it's time to coreboot.
>>
>>70173286
I have dGPU version. Fan used to ran fairly hot with the Delta assembly. Set tpfancontrol to lvl 2-3 most of the time and ramp up to lvl 6 for anything above 60 C. And try to get the Toshiba dGPU heatsink assembly if you can regardless if you only have iGPU. You will notice a big temperature difference.
>>
>>70173358
Im already using tpfan.
I have the NVS 5400M version.
Shit its at 70-80°C all the time under heavy use.
>>
>>70173369
Replace the motherboard with one that doesn't have the dGPU, but keep the beefy heatsink. It should do the job. (It's not like the 5400m is much better than intel HD 4000 anyways)
>>
>>70173369
Try repaste? I have the nvidia too. Like my previous post, if temperature is really important to you, get the Toshiba heatsink assembly. Look up the t430 modding guide for part number. Mine runs about 40-46 C idle and about 52-55 normal browsing+general use. Load is about 68 max. I find the nvidia quite useless most of the time. If I could go back I would definitely get the intel only version for even better heat. You can disable the nvidia in BIOS option but keep in mind the miniDP will stop working.

I own a t460 and a dell m4800. Here's my thoughts on them.

t460 pros:
Chassis is nice. Display is decent quality (1920×1080 IPS Touch (Option)). Long battery life (around 9 hours with the larger battery).

t460 cons:
Bios whitelist for wlan, wwan like other Lenovo models. Keyboard doesn't fit all that well in the chassis and flexes a lot. Downfiring speakers are pretty bad. No physical trackpad buttons on the bottom.

dell m4800 pros:
Much better speaker placement and quality than the t460. Has bottom physical buttons for trackpad. Keyboard feels a lot more solid, it fits in the chassis a lot better than t460.

dell m4800 cons:
Display is massive downgrade in quality compared to t460. Chassis ruggedness is very shit, expect very visible scratches and rubber feet falling off even with light use. Feels needlessly heavy instead of solid and well-built, kind of like the chinese power supplies having pieces of cement glued inside them to try to fool people.

I'm looking at a thinkpad p50 to try to get the best of both worlds. Why won't Lenovo just fucking stop with the horrible quality downfiring speakers and ultra garbage fucking trackpads on their normal t series models?

Which have non-removable battery, 1 and 2 soldered RAM 'modules' respectively, right hand exhaust, keyboard is now the same as the L480/L490 and E480/E485/E490, still no thunderbolt 3, fingerprint reader have no more indicator light just like the E480(Even the L480 has it) and the list goes on

No thanks, the L490 makes the most sense if you require WWAN and also want decent graphics (RX540). It is also upgraded with thinkshutter, and have two (2) RAM slots. Still the E/L series keyboard, abysmal battery and right hand exhaust though.

Is it a good first/beginner's language?
>>
>>70177066
I think so, but that's highly subjective. Everyone learns a different way.
Go takes a lot of the meta bullshit out such as the build system, documentation engine, etc. and forces a lot of standards which make it very easy to deal with other people's projects since it will look and act the same as yours. This makes it easy to read, modify, and build other people's code for educational purposes, and the standard formatting also allows for automatic documentation generation.

Contrast this with something like C where you're not just tasked with learning a programming language, but all the tools around it too. And every project is going to have a different set of conventions in all regards. Which tools they use, how the code is styled, no guarantees of any documentation at all. Works differently depending on what OS you're on. etc.

I think the language is simple enough that it might be good for beginners but I say this having learned it from reading their spec after already having years of experience with other languages. So I don't really know.

Here's your reading list if you want it. In no particular order.

I want to replace the WiFi card in my x200 for one that uses free (as in freedom) drivers. Is it true that it's not possible to replace it unless I libreboot it? Is there no other way? I don't want to libreboot, because I heard it had some issues with installing OpenBSD with full disk encryption.
>>
>>70180519
It's the 170W one

I'm tempted to a t440s that's going for cheap on our version of craigslist, but it has sort of scratches/impressions of the keyboard on the screen. Would those be visible when the screen is on?

I have used SOIC8 clip too many times, so these doesn't get any good connection anymore with this machine.

Do you guys use an external keyboard when you dock? Or jt keep using the Thinkpad keyboard... Why?
>>
>>70179876
i paid 260€ for that in november, but the condition was really used (some cracks and deep scratches).
I think 340 is okay if the condition is very good

What does /tpg/ primarily use their ThinkPads for? I have a W540, and personally, I work with cars a lot so I value ThinkPads' durability and I'm not afraid to get them dirty. I also do a lot of video production and Photoshop work, and I occasionally do CAD for some DIY projects, and I've been taking up programming as a hobby recently. And some gayming when I have free time. Kind of a jack of all trades, and that's why I love the damn things.

t420's are nice, pop in 8/16GB RAM and an SSD and you'll have a very nice, cheap machine. not so much gaming wise, but if you are doing some good dev stuff you'll appreciate it.

X200 - Closer to IBM-Tier ruggedness, 16:10, WXGA+ option, Trannyboot <3

X220 - Newer, USB 3.0, way better graphics, IPS display option, Coreboot OWO

>>70182244
Nothing really, unless you grind out and make it thinner.

>>70179514
I suggest a ThinkPad Yoga, there are many iterations of it, just go with the screen size you want and one that has Haswell or newer. There is also the X1 Tablet if you want a removable thinkpad, those first two generations are core M3 ULV CPUs.

>>70179275
Its most likely not, there is no "Bright focal" LCD manufactuer.
This is a swap, I recommend, lowest price I could find.

Ah, I misread. That caddy is for a ThinkPad with an ultrabay "slim" the T520 uses a standard ultrabay. That one will still work but the gap will be there.

>>70183465
Yeah it works, it was just weird that there was a gap.

Kinda, the 900p screen isn't IPS and a FHD one is going to be $$. I'd request a partial refund.

I have been thinking about this, I think I might end up doing it.

Also unrelated question. I bought a new laptop battery, what software can I use to determine all of the cells in the battery are functioning?
