Development is great if you work for a tech related company that's doing well, it's awful when you are trying to play the startup game or you are working for a company that doesn't care about tech but still needs it.

At least being a lawyer or accountant, it's not too hard to start your own business or to get into consultancy as you move into more senior roles.

Good point anon, this is probably also true for any field. I'm a financefag and after getting through a shitty unpaid internship with a financial advisor, I got a big break and interned at Dow Jones for a summer.
Ever since then I've been getting interviews at every investment bank I've applied to and it's honestly a nice change of pace from getting tons of rejections just from submitting my resume.

The reality is that those who have a life-life balance like that, don't even know what work-life balance means. The majority of companies are toxic as fuck. Maybe I'm just not educated in business but something doesn't add up. They have a surplus of money, be it in the form of employing tons of useless people or in your scenario, paying everyone 5x over market value.
When a company has a profit, it's usually used for dividends or to invest in growth, right? Both of those things make the company more valuable. Overspending on labor by 5x doesn't seem remotely logical.

That leaves a few possibilities:

I'm a fan of Jarvis Johnson, I was surprised that the videos he makes now which have nothing to do with programming are some of my favorite to watch on YouTube.

However, in this thread there are a lot of generalities that are based on a bias that is shared with a very specific set of men, late stage virgins, men with low confidence to the opposite sex, men who have had 2/3 bad experiences with women who think all are the same, and just a niche that think that women are the root of all evil. My post was a bit of a taunt, but you see these kind of threads almost every time you come on here and it's just lame. I don't see why caring about some girl being an intern yet not being the most productive, or productive at all, with her time should make 50 or so posters so pissed or triggered by bad memories, she's just living her life.

You also see threads of people posting about that Asian guy that traveled around the world and was highly successful in his field and said that Linux should be used for backend work, or about a guy who's studying CS in Harvard showing people that he doesn't just code and sit on his poop for for 80% of the day and that too seems to role people up on here.

To me it's a problem, and frankly, sad. If you think you're a loser, or that life is hard for you; can't get a job or it was hard for you to get one out of college, that's most likely your fault and I'm sure some in this thread have told you why already. If that's not why watching this girl try to have fun doing something boring for a living is making you riled up, your reasons are arbitrary.

I'm a senior engineer at a consulting firm for fin-tech. I have unlimited remote work, but an office I can go into if I need. For the most part, unless I'm meeting with clients, I work from home. That means I get to live further away from silicon valley so that my cost of living is cheaper, my commute costs are few and far between, but I still get paid a silval salary. I'm really happy

Woman here. I have been working as a software engineer for ten years now. I have worked on game engines, machine learning, data science, pretty much anything fun.


There’s a push because it honestly is a lot harder grtting into tech as a woman. There’s all these weird hoops like I have to be “one of the guys” to fit in and any sign of femininity is taken as a weakness. For example, most women who have worked in nonfrontend programming I’ve seen over the years avoid makeup or use minimal. They also speek like an octave deeper around teammates than around me. Most women just weren’t encouraged like a lot of men are to get into tech when they do show an interest. I know like some men I had to fight tooth and nail to get where I am today—there’s a disparity here with how accessible tech is made to men vs women. Heck, even on IRC most of the women I know on freenode and the like go to great lengths to conceal the fact that they’re women because people will automatically treat them with less respect.


I have a trans woman friend who confirmed what she experienced as a male in tech and what she experiences passing as a woman in tech. Its very interesting how insecure or jusf plain shitty men get about women doing intellectual things, almost as if it threatens some of them.


All in all I’ve worked with mostly pleasant people but its stupid to pretend this reality doesnt exist and that women have less opportunity to succeed in tech than men om average.


Like my male friend who I just taught to code just got a high paying job which took me years ro get to that point when i was on my own.


Yes there are womens reachout orgs that help women get into tech, but the reason they exist is because texh is currently an extremely masculine space. I know that sounds absurd but if uve ever worked with a mostly female team vs a mostly male team ull notice differences. I wish tech to be more accessible and pleasant for all.
