I know this thread is for thinkpads, and mostly older models, but I just checked the lenovo site and saw this

Is it possible for a Thinkpad to be set to automatically hibernate when power is cut, and turn back on when it receives power? If not the hibernation, at least powering on when it is plugged in. (removing CMOS is one way to do this, but then the computer won't actually boot into the OS because it'll want me to set the time and etc.)

This is the story of how I got a free Thinkpad on eBay.

>Buy T450s on eBay.
>Thinkpad arrives in the mail today.
>It is a T450 and not a T450s.
>Contact eBay notifying them of the screw up they submit a refund request on my behalf.
>Refund request is instantly accepted and eBay says keep the item.
>toogoodtobetrue.jpeg
>Refund request has been closed so I message the seller to clarify and make sure there are no screw ups. Because I am not a nigger and a thief.
>Seller emails me back that if I don't like the laptop I can send it back and to message him if I plan on sending it back.

The money should hit my paypal tomorrow and now I have a free T450.
The seller is either a moron and doesn't understand the situation or they just don't want to worry about return postage (why I don't know?).
>>
>>70159411

>>
>>70159453

Nope because you can stick the same in a t440p that can actually properly cool it.

A t430 will overheat, there are many many examples of this.

A t430 also requires a cheap chink converter for 1080 ips that many report to fail after 3-4 months.

A t430 is a direct downgrade compared to a t440p

It's pretty nice. >>

Hey man I've been using a thinkpad since an x60

You're gonna want a t440 or newer.

Those older models aren't powerful to do anything on, they lack usable displays, they have poor battery life and run hot.

The fans are loud, they are thick, they are heavy.

There isn't really anything good about them unless you enjoy looking like somebody with aspburgers.

An X200 or T400 if you want the utmost privacy and usability. Libreboot-installable, and super cheap! There's no reason to get a X201 if you can get a X200 for the same or less.

>>70163877
>Those older models aren't powerful to do anything on, they lack usable displays, they have poor battery life and run hot.
As long as you're not gayming or doing graphically intensive workloads, they work great. Also, fix your shit. My devices have great battery life (9 hours or more on my X200) and run at max 50°C on a heavy load.

>The fans are loud, they are thick, they are heavy.
Again, fix your shit. My fans are quiet as a mouse. Devices like the T500 genuinely are pretty bulky, but the X200 is far from that. Stop being a manlet if you can't handle some thickness.

these thinkpads already have worse built quality compared to my old Elitebook 2560p (where you can also remove the bottom part in 5 seconds without removing screws), but sadly the old Elitebooks only came with shitty superdark TN panels and the new elitebooks are plastic shit as well
>>
>>70164050

sRGB color range is a subset of aRGB, so the emulation is 100% accurate and has the same result as any 'real' sRGB screen.
The emulation setting is contained in on-board memory so that once it is set up it is good even if you reboot into another OS.

Anyone here use an IBM Thinkpad for actual production work and not just shitposting on /g/?

Here's my T30, Pentium 4 1.8ghz and 2gb RAM running XP with the unofficial SP4, controlling a Megasquirt MS2PNP ECU for a Ford Probe GT V6 through the serial port, and a second PCMCIA serial card running an Innovate LC2 wideband O2, on the battery it has about two hours of tune time on it if I don't run the inverter.

Can Even series thinkpads be trusted? I have my eye on an E485 with
>Ryzen R7-2700U 4c8t APU
>2x8GB DDR4-2400MHz
>14.1" 1080p IPS matte panel
>Windows 10 Pro
Comes out to just shy of $685 built on Lenovo website. A comparable A485 (basically AMD variant of the T480 chassis) with lesser specs is like $960. The only difference the A485 brings is the "Pro" version of the APU's (additional security features, better silicon binning) and larger secondary battery (6 cell primary with 3 cell internal vs just 3 cell on the E series)

Insight is appreciated
>>
>>70166002
I lied. It seems the A485 is nearly $1300 everything said and done for a similarly specced version compared to the E485. I don't get their pricing. To go from 4GB RAM to 8+8GB on the E485 is a $106 increase. To do the same exact thing on an A485 is $212. What the fuck? They're not ECC, why the price jump?

well it's light and thin but at the cost of expandability, ram is soldered and just about the only replacable part is the ssd, the i/o is rather dissapointing with ethernet requiring a dongle, there's no power bridge system so you can't hotswap or run dual batteries, there's no 2.5 inch bay so can't use hdds, keyboard i'd say is arguable which one is better for me both classic and new are fine so just ask yourself if you care about any of the above and you should have a clear idea if you'll like it or not

if the connector is the same then yes. you could just solder your current connector onto a fresh button cell
>>
>>70167399
you need a converter board at a minimum

desu when it comes to thinkpads I think the tablet version is the most op.
>>
>>70167712
*hinge breaks*
>>
>>70167712
really I hate them
they are fat and as big as their 14" T-series variants and don't come with extended batteries like the non-tablet versions
>>
>>70167712
i like them but wish the 16:9 ones weren't 16:9 kek it feels so wrong having a touchscreen in that ratio. I think im gonna get the x1 carbon tablet in a few years when it goes down in price think it'll be awesome despite being an actual tablet
>>
>>70167729
never seen or heard of that happening to the tablets, they have very sturdy metal hinges, they can be kind of wobbly though
>>
>>70167729
It doesn't break. It just works.
I love being able to flip my screen and use it to read books.
>>
>>70166344
There used to be.
>>
Are 2-Power batteries any good? I'm thinking on ordering one, as Lenovo asks too much for a simple battery.
>>
>>70167905
You can get Lenovo batteries from Amazon/Ebay for like half the price that Lenovo asks for them straight from Lenovo. (still slightly more expensive than third-party ones though)
>>
>>70167763
>being wobbly
This is true, but it doesn't bother me. And when you invert them to use it like a tablet, to read books like do, it doesn't wobble.

Anyone here already bought from the seller retechddr on ebay? I live outside the US and his thinkpads are the cheapest on the listings, the problem is he use the same photo for every listing so I can't rate if it is in good condition.

where can I get a gf like this?
>>
>>70158001
Hey buddies! I got a few noob questions
1. Do you think any new thinkpads, going forward, will have power bridge?
2. Has anyone tried using USB-C batteries? Does it feel natural?
3. Is there a possibility of a Workstation thinkpad w/o a dGPU or an AMD gpu?
4. How do nvidia GPUs perform on Linux? What's battery life like? For reference my 116whr T550 lasts 12 hours
5. Does thunderbolt / egpu work on Linux? How about PCIe passthrough?
6. Has anyone tried the Dell Precision 7530... Its the only laptop on the market that isn't HP and provides a hexacore w/o a GPU
>>
>>70167983
I had that exact keyboard. it wasn't that old. 2006? Not as old as that monitor
>>
>>70168006

>>
>>70168024
>1.
who fuckin knows
>2.
USB-C is not a type of battery
>3.
You don't buy thinkpads to use as a "workstation", whatever the fuck that means
4.
GPUs on linux perform worse on linux then windows due to retarded programmers or anally fucked programmers
5.
Everything works on Linux if you try hard enough retard
6.
This is a thinkpad thread

Thinkpads are laptops you absolute troglodyte.
Workstations are not laptops.

>>
>>70168607
No you retard. The term laptop is the opposite of the term workstation.
Laptop, something you take with you, i.e. not fixed.
Workstation, something you don't take with you, generally too large to not take with you, i.e. not portable

>and the new elitebooks are plastic shit as well
Depends on how new you're talking about I bought an 820 G2 and it's metal just like my 2570p.
If anything it feels more high quality from a subjective point of view.
>>
How chunky is the T440p compared to the T430? I originally started looking into buying an X230. But now I'm in doubt between the T430, X230, X240, T440s and T440p. They all seem pretty neat. Send help.

a workstation is a station you work at
if you place your laptop on a desk and do work on it, it is a workstation.
the W for W series stands for workstation

>>70169064
but is t440p slimmer than t430s ?
