>>
>>69749145
If you're keen on using the stock rom, install a web browser, music and video players of your preference as the ones in MIUI are really bad. The rest of the stock apps are decent to great. I'd still flash a custom rom on it, though, even if you want to use MIUI flashing Xiaomi.eu makes the whole experience much better than staying on stock.

Considering your opinion on Samsung, Oneplus 6 or 6T might be exactly the thing you're looking for. If you want something more exotic, look into Mi Mix models.

how useless are micro sd cards in recent android versions like 8.1 and 9? can data be shared between different apps? for example if i download a movie with firefox and choose the micro sd as the destination, can the movie file be seen by other apps, like a media player?
i've read that apps can only access specifically designated directories on a per-app basis so that android can clean up the external storage when you remove an app: https://source.android.com/devices/storage/traditional

>>
>>69751795
Remember I'm talking about "Redmi 7" and not "Redmi Note 7".

The plain Redmi phones are smaller than the Redmi Note phones, and have slightly worse specs all around, and cheaper.

I'm hoping Redmi 7 comes with SD632. Everyone is using 138mm tall 5in phones (Mi4c) and doesn't want to go to bigger, so I have to find something under 150mm tall.

Luckily since the 19:9 meme going on, a 147mm tall phone now is much smaller than an older 150mm tall phone, because they're 5mm smaller in width to keep the ratio. Still feels much smaller in hand while having a 5.8in screen.
>>
>>69751788
If you download any file in a browser to your sd card it'll be accessible to other apps, if you grant the apps permission to access storage and browse to it.

When you get to moving apps and their data over to sdcard that's when shit starts getting useless. You have to remember the internal storage of your phone is like a 300mb/s ssd while the sdcards are like a 50mb/s flash drive, running apps off the card is dumb, but putting music or video files on SD is good.

On Android even the internal storage identifies as sdcard so it's not much different.

Just buy the apple one or don't lose the one that comes with your phone

It also depends on your phone. Many phones have an internal dac and the usb-c is just transferring analog, in other phones the conversion happens in the dongle.

Limited availability = the few sellers that still have it are price gouging. Look if you can import the phone from elsewhere, the only difference between the US XZ1C and the one sold elsewhere is the software and you can easily flash the US firmware.

The Razer one is apparently really good but it's also pricey.

The cheapest phones are usually carrier prepaid phones, you can get those for $20-100, but they're locked to whatever carrier is selling them so it depends on which carrier your friend is on.

How small? There's Sony's XZ1/XZ2 Compact, but the batteries are <3000mah (though battery life is still very good since the screen is so small). Smallest phone with a big battery I can think of is the Mi A2 Lite at 149mm tall and with a 4000mah battery.

So i would like to get a new phone and i want one from xiaomi, but i have a hard time seeing any big difference between say mi 8, mi 8 pro, mi 8 lite
On paper they have pretty similar parameters while mi 8 pro costs like 60% more than mi 8 and mi lite costs 50% less than mi 8 lite.
Those are huge price gaps for very similar devices.
So where is all that money difference then?
>>
>>69758371
Compared against the Mi8 and Mi8 Pro, the Mi8 Lite has a slower processor, worse cameras, no dual band GPS or IR face recognition, and the screen is LCD instead of OLED.

Mi8 and Mi8 Pro is basically the same phone, only different is the transparent back, an in-display fingerprint reader and a slightly smaller battery on the Pro. The regular Mi8 is the best buy of the three IMO. Though at a similar price as the Mi8 you can get a Pocophone which has a headphone jack, expandable storage and a bigger battery.
>>
>>69758472

jesus christ, what the fuck? i completely missed that.
that just completely killed the mi8 for me. why the fuck would chinks do that? i know they like to steal ideas from others but why steal the most retarded idea that apple ever had?
fucking hell, guess i will get the redmi note 6 since it it's not much worse and features like face unlock and screen fingerprint are useless to me, i use fp on the back of my current redmi note 4 and i love it, super precise, super fast, why fix what ain't broken?
the only feature i would really really like is the oled display though

I have to ask you again, why those two specifically? To answer your initial question, I'd pick the Xiaomi. I don't know whether it's Huawei's hardware, software or a combination of both, but those Kirin CPUs perform a whole generation behind their Qualcomm counterparts and that's why I don't like recommending them.
>>
>>69752347
They all suck. Each phone brand has their special snowflake way of wiring analog audio through USB-C pins so passive adapters are not interchangeable. The only option the sucks the least are just external DACs/USB soundcards. Using one of those can mean a few hitches with getting apps to output on the proper sound devices and slightly less battery life.

I plan on getting a V35 in a few weeks. From what I have read, the quality/screen issue is a bit better on the v35 compared to the V30. LG has a shit reputation though. I don't think there are roms for it and they have a weak reputation for updates.

They are about $300 in new/other on eBay and about $230ish used. I can't find anything that competes price wise, especially with a headphone jack and all the AT&T burgerland LTE bands. Mi 8 is $400 without a jack and the OP6 is $460.

thats actually exactly why I'm getting it. the only other good budget option with all bands and volte and wifi calling and a jack would be waiting for the rumored pixel 3 lite, but I heard pixels have garbage volume output from the jack and also shitty QC

Hello,
Basically I am tired of my LG G5. Excellent phone speed wise, screen and really nice OS by LG, but the "radio" functions literally suck donkey dick: GPS works like shit and is slow as hell (yeah i did the "fix"), and I use it a lot.
The radio link sucks even worse. I have no service at all where cheap chink phones have 3G+ on the same operator.

I went for this phone because the removable battery and the V20 was not available in my country, and was pleased at first but then it showed that lacks actual phone usability. This phone really needs optimal situations to work and that is not acceptable, as I said cheap Huaweis outclass it far and wide as being phone and data terminals.

Can you suggest a really good phone that has similar screen and speed but ACTUALLY works with everything else expected from a phone? Thanks.

There's plenty of phones that are easy to root. Just get a phone where the manufacturer allows the bootloader to be unlocked, like Google Nexus/Pixel, Oneplus, Xiaomi, Oneplus, Motorola etc.
>>
>>69769957
Is it possible to get root access without installing a custom OS that makes it unable to update?
I'm so tired of this, I actually switched from Apple because I believed I wouldn't have to mess around with some form of jailbreaking, (because I didn't have to go through google play, I could just download APK files) yet it turns out the phone manufacturer is more of a problem than the OS.
>>

Everyone listens to music or audiobooks on their phones and the only alternative now is either usb C adapter to 3.5mm jack (incredibly retarded and you have to carry it everywhere with you)

>>
>>69770044
>because I didn't have to go through google play, I could just download APK files)
But you don't. Google fdroid, then install it on your phone, and than on that app look for an app called "Yalp Store", where you can access Google store without an account and download wtv you want as an apk.

i used to love metro ui before windows 8 but the reason metro never took off was because the design language was completely impractical for any of the use cases that people actually used smartphone apps for

metro looks good for menus and stuff but for actual practical app design it simply does not work for like 90% of apps. nobody bothered making apps work within the terrible design reqs to get on the windows store. it works great displaying rss feeds and terminals - it was their palm killer from 2004 trying to compete with the iphone

they completely ignored all of the problems it had so they could compete on aesthetic which was admittedly important for about a year long period after the iphone came out but they had absolutely no competition when android 4.0 came out

Embarrassing. I don't have a Poco F1 or a Pixel 3, so i can't post comparison pics. considering the pixel is google's flagship and they not only maintain and distribute android they also have a propensity for using minor design changes to manipulate the behavior of their userbase in broad strokes i think the assumption that its the same sensor with the same software is flawed

It's not exactly the same hardware, only the sensor. The optics are different and Xiaomi didn't include OIS with it. I'm guessing that has to be the reason why the Mix 3 camera goes neck to neck with other flagships, while the Mi 8 can't, despite them sharing both the hardware and software on paper.
>>
>>69770905
>the redmi's was shipped without camera2 compatbility but someone modified the kernel to include it, right?
It's not the kernel they're modifying, all that the flashable TWRP zips or Magisk modules that enable camera2 api is add the string "persist.camera.HAL3.enable=1" to the build.prop file, you could do it manually with a build.prop editor (still requires root). Makes you wonder why the manufacturer didn't enable it in the first place when that is all it takes. There's phones that come with Camera2 api enabled out of the box (even some of the newer Xiaomi phones), in that case all you need to do is install the GCam APK to get it working.

Like I said here >>69771046, there's basically three ways to enable it: flash a TWRP zip, install a Magisk module, or edit the build.prop file manually through ADB or with a build.prop editor. All you need is root, doesn't require custom kernels or anything like that.

FYI, if you want some more options to consider, Xiaomi's Mi Mix 2S and Mix 3 are also compatible with Verizon as long as you have a pre-activated SIM card.

If you have a backup phone you can use temporarily, might be worth it to wait until MWC at the end of this month to see all the new phones manufacturers will be announcing there.

There's several online stores that ship from Europe, delivery time is usually just a few days with DHL. You could have got the 128GB version cheaper than what you paid for the 64GB, without having to wait for weeks like you might have ordering from China.

For example, Honorbuy has the 128GB model for 340€ (inc. shipping), with 2-5 days delivery estimate.
>>

They must ship within a week of receiving payment confirmation, though that is probably extended right now due to their new year celebrations. As to when to expect it, if you payed DHL you can expect it in about 10 work days. For other methods such as "Ali standard shipping" and "seller method" check the comments, people like to post how long it took for them which is super helpful. The slowest/worst shipping companies are Yanwen and PostNl

For your safety remove the battery beforehand, based on your description that thing is a ticking timebomb without you hitting it with a metal object.

It's not heating up that much yet (except when charging but it's always done that) so I'm not that worried. Although I will admit I'm not an expert on the subject, I'm just basing it on my experience with a Prestigio MultiPhone that started burning up towards the end of it's lifespan.

Yeah, I'm shit at finding good prices. Although I also don't trust delivery dates from foreign countries. My packages always arrive either at on the last day or later (in the case of one book weeks later). This is probably the fault of the local post but they seem to deliver packages from inside the country much more quickly

Yea, dual sim phones tend to drain more battery, even when the second slot is empty. Software updates can also take longer to be published by the manufacturer.
Get the dual sim if you really need it, otherwise avoid like the plague.

I'm in the same boat but I justify it by upgrading every 4-5 years so I might as well treat myself when I do decide its time to get something new

bullshit

alright
I ordered a wireless charger and a car charger from them the same time and they have shipped those.
I better not be getting gooked

Hopefully. Although, if it isn't announced at MWC then that's probably it for the Xperia Compact line.

what is the upside of buying the pixel 2 xl?
people said the screen is not the best, it doesn't have an sd card slot or a headphone jack
why not go for the galaxy s8+ which is almost the same price (where i live) and doesn't have these problems?
alternatively if there is something better in that price range without a notch let me know
>>
>>69774655
>what is the upside of buying the pixel 2 xl?
better camera, smoother UI, stock Android with less bloat and faster updates vs. the S8
>>
>3gb+ram
>Sd card slot
>3k battery
>Headphone jack (bonus points if it works with 2 ringed jacks)
>Lineage or other reliable rom support.
>nice screen.
poorfag so I'm looking for either old flagships or current mid rangers.

What are the best options?

Should I get a custom rom for my pocophone, or should I just stick with MIUI?

I don't see the point in keeping the stock. If you like MIUI, flash Xiaomi.eu, if not, Pixel experience, Lineage or whatever else you like.

I am aware of this, (and was before I switched to android) meaning that Google isn't the one preventing me from achieving my dreams. The phone manufacturers are the ones who have locked down any "features" they want to make sure I have.
>>69770418
I am aware there is a way to install new features, but the process is complicated and must be done with every new phone.

I am really surprised that NO company has stood up to fill this market demand.
>>
>>69748845

Pretty shit. I had one and it lasted just over a year before it got slow as shit and the battery basically wouldn't hold a charge. Plus, they're often missing different bands so you won't get full 4g/LTE speed if you're in the US or Canada.

Do we all still hate big phones here? I loved my mi max 1 until it hit a brick wall.

Most of the phones sold in US don't, it isn't in widespread use so you won't miss it.

I am not very knowledgable about phones and I want to learn more.
What's about the Pocophone that makes it so popular here?
By the way I'm looking for an overall good phone that is not as expensive as a One Plus 6. Is Pocophone really the choice?

>costs <$300, has similar specs to phones 2-3x more expensive

>easy to unlock the bootloader, large and active custom ROM community

I'm looking for a phone that:
(1) has a physical qwerty keyboard
(2) will receive security updates for the next two years
(3) will not fall apart or slow down within the next two years

I'm currently using a keyone which failed hard on requirement #3 now that blackberrys are lagdroid chinkshit

I've considered:
(1) key2 - presumably no better than the keyone
(2) jiophone 2 - sounds like poor build quality too, but at least it's cheaper
(3) neo900 - vaporware
(4) photon q or droid 4 + sailfish os - ports haven't been updated in a long time
(5) iphone 6 + keyboard case - sounds like shitty keyboards and probably EOL soon
(6) librem 5 - no keyboard and unknown build quality but good privacy and should be supported for a long time

any thoughts or other options to consider? I'm leaning towards the librem 5... not happy to lose the keyboard but it seems like there are no remotely decent qwerty phones anymore
