>it's an out of stock episode
>>69728897>>69728934UK customs are really fucked. Usually always £40 regardless of what you're bringing in, which is as much as the keycaps themselves. So, is there any way I can find out if they're gonna be available to buy in the UK some time this year or do I bite the bullet?
>>69728993That customs fee depends in which carrier you use, too. I know the lowest (GLS I believe) is €9 and the highest (PostNL, of fucking course) is €12.

How important is longevity for keyboards? I want a modern ALPS board, but I'm reading a lot of negative reviews about Matias switches and how they malfunction. So I was thinking I could go for Fuhua switches in a KBP V80, but they're rated at 10 million keystrokes compared to Matias' 50 million keystrokes. How much is 10 million keystrokes really? I'm thinking a lot, even though I use my keyboard quite heavily daily.
>>69731093most membrane keyboards are rated for 2-3 million keypress. the model m was rated for 25 million keypress. hopefully that should give you a general idea if you've used those office membranes or an IBM model M
Reminder that topre is a glorified membrane keyboard and redditors over rate it because it costs so much

>>69728704Hello guys, my first post here, so let's hope this goes well. The Logitech K120 is the best keyboard I have ever tried. It only cost me 8£ brand new. Why is it good you ask? I shall tell you.Well, first of all: this keyboard is from Logitech, which is undoubtedly the best keyboard manufacturer today. It is a rather common keyboard, yes; but because it is a Logitech, somehow it doesn't feel cheap. It's like the brand itself makes a crappy keyboard turn into a great one. I don't know, Logitech has always made me feel comfortable with cheaper products. The keys are superbly well distributed, and your fingers won't touch the surrounding keys like some other ones I've tried. The keys are also not very soft, nor very hard to press down on. You know, this keyboard makes it just right, so that you can actually take advantage of the impulse that the rebounding keys give you. This keyboard makes you feel like gravity is actually working WITH you, rather that against you.Another thing I absolutely love about it, is the space bar. It is just the right size, and not too small or too big like on some other crappy keyboards from other manufacturers. The space bar is the most balanced key in the whole keyboard, it sits right at the center, and you can actually use it without looking at the keyboard. I mean, that's just brilliant design. It's an USB keyboard. This makes it perfect for use with modern computers, and even laptops and netbooks. No more using that old crappy PS/2 port. We're in 2019, people. I could be here all day, but in the end, I just wanted to share with you my experience with this marvelous piece of peripheral engineering. I recommend this keyboard to anyone.
>>69731322I like it and have many other boards to compare. It's just a very nice kind of tactility. I love typing on clears too. Either way though if you are the kind of person who wants to just buy one keyboard and use it as a tool you may as well go with high end linears like a lubed retooled rgb black with custom spring weight or maybe a silenced stem. I imagine ergoclears(since regular clears are v good) and the new holy p/zeal v2 are just as good as topre if not better. Each topre feels pretty different too. I was planning on getting a third topre board but now I'm just going to go for maybe an ergoclear.
>>69731782How do retooled blacks compare to box blacks?
>Budget<80 European Dirham/90 American Dollars with tax>LocationEast EU>Preferred switch typeBlue>LayoutISO>Form factor100%>Backlightno>Previous/current keyboardsCheapest cherry blue switch keyboard I could find 5 years ago. Keycaps were loose/shit, but was great other than that. Quarter of the switches just started doubletapping suddenly one day.
>>69732014Are we talking both being hand lubed? Imo literally any hand lubed linear > any non-hand lubed linear. If however ur dum and don't want to then the box black will be better stock vs stock as it's lubed a bit out of the factory. If both are lubed then the cherry will feel smoother and also sound nicer. Also some other great options if you don't want to build is a hotswap board so you can lube without soldering and also any board with flaretech reds(wooting one) and the varmillo EC rosery/sakura switches.

Im kinda new to /mkg/ and Im trying to comprehend why people unironically buy keyboards without the win / super button. They find the empty space so aesthetically pleasing, that its worth to use one more fn combination than otherwise necessary? Pick related is a 327$ PD-KB600B, and the only logical reason I find for the lack of said button, is that they needed the space to put the logo on the front.
>>69741070mate that diamond key is super/win/command
>>69740426At least the tracking is fast :3
>>69741203Well yeah, still theres Ctrl missing, even though there enough space.
>>69741286mate look at the text under Tab (or better yet google hhkb layout)
>>69741070I thought the same. get an ortholinear board. all the larger keys (especially the giant spacebar) are just wasted space.
>>69741286????????????????????????????????control is where capslock goes on a standard ANSI layoutyou don't need that 'missing' third modifier at all
>>69741286only keys missing are modifier keys (caps and right ctrl) which are realistically never used.
>>69741294>>69741331Now I see, missed it. The example was bad, look at pic related, any justification in removal of win / super in those?
>>69741434yeah I find these just plain stupidthey're supposed to pay hommage to the older boards, like the model mit's a style over substance thing
>>69741434some people never use the windows key and instead of using a toggle switch to disable it they decide its better to remove the key entirely. its pretty dumb
>>69737612oi m8 only tacky unlabeled undersized uncomfy overbuilt trash in this thread ok?
what use you see from 160 euro keyboards? its a waste of money when with that money you could buy yourself something nice or gift your parents something like atleast flowers or expensive material thing ! this keyboard im using costs 5 euro, multimedia keyboard and its better than mechanical
>>69729560If you don't know for sure what switch you want, get yourself a €20 switch tester (with cherry and noncherry) first
>>69742173>with that money you could buy yourself something niceyeah, like a mechanical keyboard
>>69742017Yes it's called the windows key.
>>69743510No it isn't
>>69743541yes it is. the windows key was first introduced in 1994 with it's own unique scan code e0 5b/e0 5c.
>>69742173I agree. Mine cost about £10 and it was great so I bought another to put in the cupboard for the next decade so I can use it after this one dies. Mechanical keyboard are vastly overrated, give an annoying "shock" up each fingertip every time you press down the key and a good OEM rubberdome is absolutely fine every time.
>>69743541so what is it then?
>>69743594It's the super key
>>69728814>>69728993>>69729085I have never, ever, had to pay customs for chinkshit. Including when I had large boxes worth like $50.The £8 fee exists and basically kills any cheap massdrop purchases - you pay for a £20 meme, then £4 of VAT (20%) which is like whatever, and then the handling fee gets stamped on top and it's double the actual tax and you end up paying over half the product price just to receive the package waiting in the post office down one block. But that never happens with packages from China.
>>69743627No it isn't you dumbfuck. That key (the one that sends the 0x5B scancode, or 0x5C for the right one) was first introduced by Microsoft on their keyboards."Super" is just an alternative name given to it by freetards and has nothing to do with the Space Cadet keyboard's Super key.
>>69729479That's from reddit tho.
>>69743651That's literally incorrect but okayBy the way, saying it twice doesn't make it any less untrue.
>>69743627Actually it's called meta. You may have seen it on some keyboards as the diamond key like on the HHKB or those old SUN keyboards
Is there a cheap way to get a 75%? Under $100, ideally even less (there are decent-ish 60% keyboards for $60-ish, that kind of price point would be great), doesn't matter if kit or prebuilt, keycaps can be ABS or I'll just pick up one of those chink PBT sets for $25
>>69743682No you're literally incorrect. No one refers to it as super. The common alternatives are command or meta. Super is just the name that freetards gave it and it has nothing to do with the Super key used on LISP machines.
>>69743635idk what percentage of packages actually gets hit with customs, I've had 2 massdrop items that exceeded the limit, 1 got hit 1 didn'tit also depends on the vendor, some don't give up the actual price, kbdfans labels everything as $5 for examplekprepublic 100% gives up the real price, so be weary of that, people have gotten hit with customs from kprepublic stuff beforeI've known a guy from the UK who bought a $300 item, got hit with customs, and the item ended up being defect, that's a big hit to take
what's the website that lets you build custom keycap sets?
>>69743683Isn't Meta usually Alt? Of course on stuff like the space cadet they were both dedicated keys but in modern keyboards I almost always see meta being used as a name for alt.
>>69743705>>69743739Thanks lads, these are great
>>69744093meta usually works like apples command key. some keyboards like the knights ones didn't use an alt key so meta was used instead. also your probably thinking of emacs users who emulate alt as meta and windows as super like how it was on the old space cadet keyboards.
>>69743669I posted it in both places, friend.

>>69744407>also your probably thinking of emacs users who emulate alt as meta and windows as superNot just emacs, but almost every other context I've seen meta used. Even like Nethack calls it meta.It may well have originated from emacs but seems to be a very widespread convention these days.

Went with cherry green option, they're very clicky and heavy, everything else now feel like a joke. Build quality is top-notch, software is great, and customisation options are amazing.
>>69745094>What is this brand? Is it chinkshit? Are those keycaps a scam? I don't even know what they mean. chinkshityesnoit's just a rebranded razer huntsman
>>69745148When Richard Stallman created emacs he envision his users to be just as autistic as he is. This meant then no matter what the keyboard layout was you had to use hyper, super, and meta from left to right. Now this problem meant that the meta key which was commonly used as windows or command conflict with most keyboard placements where it goes control, meta, and alt. So the creator of the HHKB, Eiiti, decided to end the confusion by switching the placement of the meta and alt key, that way they corresponded with what emacs users use. Now days both terms are used interchangeably to refer to the key. KDE calls it meta while Gnome calls it super. While the original term may have been meta, computers and their terminology evolve and honestly it really doesn't matter what some autists think.

>>69753617id like to get a silent click mouse but they all seem to be small sized or extremely shit
>>69753667why arent mice as big as a thing as mechs, it seems if you want a good mouse you have to get some bullshit gaming style mouse, and then if u dont want a gaming mouse you have to get some cheap plastic noname brand
>>69753617Zowie EC1-B or EC2-B
>>69753700>why arent mice as big as a thing as mechsBecause the best sensors are still on some of the cheapest things. And they aren't standardized enough to autistically customize the same way.
>>69753732I mean QMK/TMK has a api for mouse movement that's pretty good. Whack a 32u4 in there and make a custom firmware and you're golden. The real issue is that making the molds for injection is some serious cash, like 10K or so. Your other options are 3d printing (lol) or CNCing something. For a keyboard you can just whack out a PCB in a day or two and slot in commodity stuff, with a mouse it's much more vertical. It's doable though, but you'll probably end up with a crap jank mouse.
how hard would it be to install LEDs on this vortex cypher? would rgb even be possible?
Tfw got memed into buying a logitech g502 'premium mouse' after the scroll wheel on my cooler master octane mouse diedThe logitech build quality is chinese plastic toy level, which i guess it is. The buttons rattle all the time and im sorely dissapointed. I knew everyone was retarded till now but i thought maybe i was fooling myself, seems not
>>69754487>Not buying a elecom huge or CSTThere's your problem anon
>>69754496I dont get trackballs, seems itd put too much strain on a finger
>>69754525Nah it's pretty ergo, even with the larger balls (as you have some extra fingers to choose from). I'm a bit of a edge case, but I don't like the buttons on my huge but love the ball. My keyboard switches are lighter then the microswitches in the mouse so I just use mousekeys for the actual clicking.Try a few, they're a good way to work.
>>69754553Id try if i had any stores round here that have them on display, im a shitholer though so no such luck, the only way is to order one and then hope i like it. Though, doesnt the ball get greasy over time
>>69754580I have to clean my huge every few weeks, but that's just popping the ball out and giving it a wipe. Maybe clean the buildup off the bearings every few days, that only takes a second.Honestly, order a huge and give it a shot. It's a decent little guy. There's also the M570, but the microswitches shit out after a year or two so you'll have to RMA them. :/
>>69754617I'll look into it, im already some money down for the shitty 502 so its right rn
>>69753666>Rate my keymap. Need some ideas for improvementsIs it based on chording?
>>69750607I used a GH60 pcb and an alu plate from kbdfans. I thought iso-nor was going to be impossible to find, but there are actually more options than you'd think. The only downside is that often (especially with enjoypbt and gmk) you're going to be paying out the ass for an international keycap set to go with the base kit.
>>69754796Yeah, it's a little fucky and I need to get the physical hardware for further testing. The idea is that you can reduce RSI with this (even if not using for steno) due to the reduced finger travel (and it's a cheap as shit steno board). The normal way you would do stuff like send Control-C is to make a dictionary entry in your software "KOPB/*KR" that would send it. That seems a little obtuse, but you're stroking CON, and then the letter 'C'.With the chords you have access to most of the letters when using modifiers, and I'm thinking about putting in a Command Mode that just buffers input and sends the releavant keysequence. So "KOPB/ALT/*KP/Enter" sends (Con/Alt/X) at the firmware level.Yeah it's ergoweird
>>69754796Another weird thing about chording is that you can't do a typical QMK style grid for mapping (as you've ascended from per key functions). So you end up with a list of options.https://github.com/germ/qmk_firmware/blob/georgi/keyboards/georgi/keymaps/steno/keymap.c
>>69754905>>69754924The thing is I'm skeptical about chording two keys with one finger. I feel like you'd at least need special keycaps for that.As far as I know all the steno chords are "horizontal" and meant to be pressed with multiple fingers, so your "vertical" chords might not work too well.Unless I'm misunderstanding your keymap illustration - I didn't bother looking through the macros so I'm just going off that
>>69755338Probably should have mentioned that, Georgi uses Chocs that have been tightened (to reduce space between keys) and are spring swapped out to less then 10g. This is the Gergo I'm using while I wait for the boards to show up, so the gapping is bigger but it's not a problem (see the flipped switches). Also of note is that home row for steno is between the keys, along the edge. The outlier is the TSDZ combo which is hit with only the pinky, this is half the reason steno machines have 15gf switches in em. As far as the vertical chords that's just par for course in stenoland and works pretty well :DBut trying to do this with generic MX switches and caps is a excercise in hell due to that gap and (assuming 60g switches) 240gf on the pinky.
Wei from KBDfans should be shipping my shit out this week. Got a basic solder station going and got a couple wires for soldering switches and LEDs.Any definitive guides I should check out on youtube? I've soldered shit together before but my technique is awful.

What switches do you guys recommend? Brown or red? I really do not like blue. I am going to use it mainly for typing and programming.

QMK question: Where do I define the number of taps required to toggle layers with TT()? I know the syntax is "#define TAPPING_TOGGLE 2", I just don't know where to type it.
>>69735502cherry mx brown
>>69750715I don't know about you guys but my middle fingers are my longest fingers, followed by my ring fingers, and they rest on d/k and s/l respectively. this keyboard looks like it's meant for women and basedboys that didn't get enough testosterone in their early stages of life. The s key should be about as far up as the d key, rather than the f key. This is literally a gay keyboard.

>>69728704i was told that mechanical keyboards are more responsive than regular keyboards. are ibm keyboards the best if i want good ergonomics + responsiveness?
I spilled some water on my mechanic keyboard. I think it's ok and it still works, should I be worried
>>69762236lol just switch it with software using the keyboard settings in your OS
>>69756945gotta agree. I've switched to mechs for the past 3 years or so and I've come to the conclusion a good scissor switch conquers all.
>>69762875Beware the IBM model M is a membrane keyboard with buckling spring actuators and is limited to 2kro. If you're a typist its fine and most people prefer them due to their unique feel as they are one of the few switches where the tactile and audible feedback happen at the exact moment of actuation. If you do game on it you will run into some issues and if you're using an emacs layout to program then you can't use basic functions like ctrl + shift + S. I use a model F which has capacitive buckling springs and has inherent nkro so those issues aren't a problem for me. The model M does have better build quality then most keyboards out there
Anyone has an idea where to get relegendable keys? Preferably EU or China
>>69763699Can't find anything, maybe Chinese call them differently
>>69763352whats wrong with the ones in the picture?did you want something in a lower profile like Tipro?
IBM here. We're working on a mech with continually adjustable switches. It will literally make all other keyboards obsolete.
>>69764458you mean like those Tokyo press switches?

>>69764440That groupbuy ended years ago, otherwise I'd buy them in a heartbeat>>69764533Tnx, but I really don't like them. I will probably start monitoring local ads for POS keyboards to gut them for keycaps.
>>69764458Make a new discrete beamspring that feels as good as the old ones in the 3278, then I'll care.
>>69764771actually you can still buy them, the real question is how much money do you have?
>>69764771>>69764787and of course I forgot the linkhttps://pimpmykeyboard.com/sa-1-space-relegendables-pack-of-10/
>>69764771If you don't like them then just get Genovation keycaps from ebay. Quality wise those are probably the best you can get
>>69764850Tnx>>69764801kek + additional shipping cost kek
>>69729571What is this? It looks similar to the Vortex Race layout but with normal esc and del keys.
>>69765946looks like most chink 75%ersprobably a kbd75 since those are the most popular ones
>>69762236Most Ducky and Leopold models have DIP switches on the back and one of those swaps the Alt and OS key position.
Quick question about a keyboard I will be building. I've ordered a PCB with LED capabilities and like 100 white LEDs. I'm going for an 'underglow' type of effect under the keycaps (I ordered solid blank ones), should I be soldering on LEDs on every single possible hole I can? Or should I only put them with the switches?
>>69766623Well if you put LEDs in every single hole you can't screws and switches in it. I'm assuming these are 3mm LEDs and not SMD LEDs in which case they are soldered after the switches go in
My favorite is the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate. It now comes in waterproof which is cool, so now I can replace mine which got ruined from my spilling soda on it, since I drink literal gallons of soda while sitting idly at my computer.
>>69766791This is bait
>>69762981well, that sucks. i use emacs quite extensively. guess i could look into model f. thanks, anon.
Where do I find tenkeyless wireless rubberdomes at low prices?
Well, I caved and got a tactile switch tester from kbdfans. Time to find out if all these maymay switches live up to the hype.
MX Clears have arrived, I don't like them. What do?
>>69769615get some orange alpsevery mx tactile is shite
>>69769646I got memed into MX Clears by people on this board, how do I know you're not meming me?
>>69769713you don't, but that is my serious opinioni went from mx blues, to clears, to silent blacks, to salmon alps, to orange alps, and i've never moved since because nothing i've tried has been as good
>>69769615Give 'em a few days at least to get used to them. If you still don't like it after that then get other switches or swap the spring.
>>69769738They're scratchy and impractically heavy, I don't know what I expected honestly. I'll try it for a couple days but I doubt It'll grow on me. The board is nice though I might return it and just get Blues.
>>69769698I dont live in the US though, any international brands that make such things?
So guys what do you think about corsair?I don't get the hate corsair gets from /r/edditI got my hands on my first mechanical keyboard corsair strafe cherry red for 79$ and so far I'm happy with it
>>69770130corsair keyboards are completely average, "good enough" construction and build quality held back by a shitty proprietary layoutthe hate is a reaction more to their undeserved level of prestige in the mainstream, to see what is objectively not any better than the competition heralded as the peak of mechanical keyboards pisses a lot of people off
>>69770130it's mainly the non-standard bottom row which restricts keycap compatibility, and a general distaste for gaming/mainstream stuff (razer gets a lot of hate too)
Should I bother looking at non-MX Red/Silver switches if I'm mostly gayming? I like lighter switches for typing too.
I i went to a local peesee shop to peep out some of them mechanical keyboards to upgrade from my old membrane and there is this one incredibly annoying thing they pretty much all hadlike i love look of the compact rgb keyboards like mk750 and the typing feels great as well. In fact i would buy one of them right there if it not were for the fucking terrible strobe effect Basically when you look at the rgb keys and move your eyes around the keys you can see this incredibly annyoing flicker. basically the leds in the keys blink at a certain pwm duty cycle, to make colors and for some reason the frequency was too low so the human eye can see this effect and it is incredibly annoying and nauseating do all rgb keyboards suffer from this issue?all of the keyboards i looked at in the store had it ;_;
>>69770543Grow up anon
>>69770565get taste boirgb is objectively pretty
>>69769713Why didn't you get a switch tester?
>>69770427Silver are a meme. Just get reds. Or be a man and get Alps and Topre.
>>69770794It's $25 and I highly doubt you can get a good feel for the switch by just spamming a single key. It was just between clears and blues too so I got this with intention of returning it if I didn't like it.
>>69770818What are the benefits of Alps and Topre over Cherry?
>>69770835It's not the same as typing on a keyboard true but if you can't walk into a shop and try out different switches it's better than buying blindly.
Still need to find a nice set of caps for my kira, wish vortex made thier shine through caps in gray
>>69770838the former feels good man, the latter is capacitive so it's much more reliable and inherently nkro
>>69770543If you disable the RGB, you don't have to worry about strobing. But to actually have nonPWM leds is one hell of a high end feature and requires a shitload of extra ICs/traces
>>69771010The problem is that all of the high end keyboards i like are rgb. I would also accept solid red backlight but no mechs i like have it
>>69768620As long as you don't switch caps lock with Ctrl you will be fine
>>69770543yeah they probably all have it. it's super noticeable and annoying especially at low brightness. you might not want rgb anyway, the best keycaps don't shine through and they'll be legible just from the light coming from the monitor, and you'll use muscle memory most of the time when you've learned how to type properly.
Can I get good stabs from ali or is it all rattly shit?
