Just replaced the single-pipe heatsink in my T420 with a double-pipe one. I don't know why it's such a big difference, I didn't realize that the single pipe was as wide as the two pipes together, but it does. I was previously idling at low to mid 50s, and now I idle in the mid-to-high 40s. Games were previously hitting a thermal cap of 80C and thermal throttling, and now they hover in the high-60s to mid-70s, without throttling. Same IC and everything. I don't know what the secret sauce is that fixed everything, but I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out, second most effective 10bux I've spent on this Thinkpad since I started modding it.

i replaced the keyboard with the keyboard of my dead R60. now i need to tear it down to see what's wrong with the second screen. xrandr doesn't even detect it. if i can find a wacom palmrest, i'll buy that too as i lurk aliexpress. everything else seems solid aside from that, nice laptop.

- supports 32GB ram

t480s for linux vs x1 Gen6. Can't decide. Any thoughts on the t480s?
>>
>>68819623
No.
>>
>>68825232
Ignore the first tard to reply.
Max 1920x1080 IPS display with adapter board that’s plug and play (niggers will try and argue flicker; updated mod and no issues myself along with countless others) but will cost you about $130 said and done. Personally the only real issue I ever had was screen, so if you’re willing to shell out the extra money it’s worth it in my eyes. If I was you I’d entirely skip the T420 and just buy a T430, but you’ll need to buy a classic keyboard extra if that’s what you’re wanting.
>>
>>68826033
is there much quality difference between the 1600x900 displays on the 420 and 430?
>>
>>68826107
No, they’re both equally shit, but better than the 1366x768. If you buy a T420/T430 with the 1366x768 panel, you’ll have to get a cable too when you upgrade to the 1600x900 panel. Just a heads up.
>>
>>68826134
alright, i'll probably get one with a 1600x900 and see how long i can put up with the screen then. thanks for the info

You mean something planted afterwards, not from the original hardware manufacturers? No. It would be a lot of effort for whoever is hiding the backdoor, and not a lot of obvious gain.
If someone wanted a backdoor on my laptop (either mine specifically, or just any laptop) there are easier ways than running a whole laptop refurbishing business.

Looking to buy a new laptop and Thinkpad is at the top of my list. My biggest issue is my inability to find one with a decent graphics card. Not crazy into gaming but I wanna at least be able to play oblivion on medium settings. Also where else besides Amazon and eBay can I find cheap think pads that aren’t broken?

I'm having an issue where sometimes I open my T450s from sleep and nothing turns on. Like the green power button is still "breathing" but none of the buttons will wake it, the power button won't do anything, and closing and reopening the lid will not do anything either. The only thing I can do is hold the power button down until it shuts off and then I have to restart it.

Can anyone help me with this issue?

Wtf is causing this?

I'm getting new one instead of this next week from the same seller, they claim that next one won't have anny issues.

I'm tired of it, it's been 2 months trying to buy T430 without issues. Btw. I'm living in Pooland.

I just got a W530 but the CPU is 2.70GHz despite thinkwiki saying this model is 3.70GHz. Is this a red flag, or will it be able to return to stock without issue? Also holy shit I don't know why the conversation is about chicklet vs old keyboard when I immediately notice that the print screen key is at the bottom, and the F keys have no space between them to cluster them into fours. I just opened Hydrus (image-tagging program) and realized I couldn't easily find F3 to tag without the thinklight. Then I hated the keyboard.

Pretty stupid question, so I bought a T430 and the listing clearly said 1366x768 HD screen, but when it arrived, it's set to 1600x900. Honestly, it looks good, but I'd like to know if it's actually an HD+ panel. Would I be able to find out if I disassemble the panel? Thanks.

Just flash the BIOS to remove the whitelist and swap whatever card you want in there. You could check the hardware switch too.

>>68840860
The seller probably just got lazy and assumed it was the smaller res because that's what most of them are. If you can't tell the difference between native res and something that's been downsampled there's something wrong with your eyes. Or the screen is just that bad.

This isn't exactly tpg-related but my Thinkpad has a weird (thin) bar of smudges underneath the screen, like it was all caused in a single event. The battery can also only hold 17% of its charge.

I'm not sure if the battery part was on purpose, since the HDD the thing came with had W10 and didn't show a red "x' or anything over the tray icon, but swapping HDDs shows it on my W7 HDD. Lenovo battery manager further clarifies its condition is "fair", holding 17% charge.

Neither the bar of smuges nor 17% of its full charge capacity battery were mentioned in the listing. It was purchased from ebay and I'm not sure what to do here. Does anyone have any experience with stuff like this to spoonfeed me I guess? Thanks if you will.

>>
>>68842676
Well thanks for acknowledging me, but I'm thinking about messaging the seller. I have zero context for what to expect, though. Again, I'm not sure W10 shows red flags for batteries, since I didn't immediately notice any on the tray when booting from the HDD it came with. Otherwise I don't understand how the seller never saw the horizontal bar of smudges under the screen in regular usage, so I'm thinking I'll just leave a 4-star review mentioning these two things (and the seller's failure to mention them) and eat the poor quality battery. I don't know if ebay mediating this is possible.

My main thing is I'm a bit too lazy to swap the hard drives again just to check if W10 really doesn't show red flags for the battery... I recorded myself opening the package but it didn't focus at all.
>>
>>68842734
responding to myself but in my shitty 720- tablet-recorde 20-minute one-handed opening the package video, I can spot that the W10 battery icon doesn't show a red "x" over the battery- it appears normal. Maybe clicking shows the battery health, but I think it's realistic the seller was a layman who would never consider doing that. I don't know why W10 would just flat not tell you through the tray icon when a battery is poor, when W7 would for the exact same battery. I'll probably message the seller just to do so, then leave a 4-star review from the info being withheld.
>>
>>68842734
the seller came on it, it's a known issue, the only way to resolve it is to cum on it yourself so it cancels out.

I was thinking it's a W530 (I'm the dude from an hour ago who asked about the CPU), and it has everything I wanted otherwise... which is hindsight is really only 1080p screen, webcam, and to be fully functioning.

I just thought it'd be rude to rate it lower than 4 when the OS the seller shipped the laptop with didn't tell you visually, unprovoked, that your battery is shit. But the horizontal bar of smudges under the screen, I feel the seller dishonestly didn't mention them. You'd rate it <4 for those two things? That's pretty rough. The point isn't even the rating- it's receiving compensation for the dishonest listing, which I'm not sure is possible on ebay.

How are you /g/entlemen. Filthy crossboarder here looking at Thinkpads to replace my old falling-apart HP Pavilion. From everything I've read, the T420 and T430 are the go-to basic bitch computers to pop your Thinkpad cherry; dimensions and screenwise they're both a little bit smaller than my current computer but specs-wise both are generally better. Only part that worries me a bit is the whole onboard graphics versus discrete graphics thing that I have to do some more reading on.

Aside from that, I don't want to go to a smaller X line because I need the optical drive. I'd be tempted to go a size up to a 5-series even but my current laptop is almost directly between the T4XX and T5XX measurements so it can go either way. Are the improved specs of the T430 worth it over the T420 (namely the HD3000 vs HD2000) in return for the worse keyboard, and what would be the go-to equivalent in the T5XX line? I know you can swap in the older keyboard style but I also read you get stuff like a caps lock LED that will never function and that would drive my autism up the wall. I'll probably work on the 1080p screen mod at some point and will look for the 1600x900 to start with as the 1280x would be even tinier than the screen I'm using. SSD and RAM upgrades will be a definite and ordered at the same time as the laptop. Not planning on doing any major gaming or anything (pre-2007 stuff only, really), just dualbooting Windows and whatever Linux distro I feel like messing with that week, web browsing, light programming, and acting as a grab-and-go fix-it system for when my friends fuck up their computers. Basically a project laptop to keep myself sane over the winter.

What can I expect in the way of battery life, especially if I manage to find an OEM 9 cell battery? Any especially weird kinks or flaws not commonly read about online? Should I start looking at the T5XX instead? Am I just being a sperg about the keyboard? I hate typing on chicklet keys.

Sorry for all the questions.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I can't help you but about the keyboard thing, here're my immediate complaints about the **30 keyboard, that the **20 keyboard solved:

-no distinction between F keys (it's just a fucking bar of keys, including home/end)
-brightness controls are in some bumass location amongst the F keys (in contrast to being actually above and below one another on the **20 keyboard)
-print screen button between right ctrl and right alt
-W500 caps lock drivers shows green or red depending, whereas **30 drivers just show a white drawing with a white line through it if caps is off (so no hitting caps twice and using peripheral vision to tell what state caps is in [not that Linux supports any of these drivers probably])
-holy shit they moved the function+pause shortcuts from the arrow keys to the useless row of F keys
-fucking chicklet keys

But you should probably bind the caps lock key to something else, thus rendering the non-functional light toggle irrelevant to you, if that's your only gripe with swapping the keyboard.
>>
>>68843041
>You'd rate it <4 for those two things?
Well, I'd contact the seller first, and probably rate it between 2 and 4 stars depending on how good his excuses were. Like, if he actually has some plausible-sounding reason for why he didn't know about damage to the screen and shit battery life, and he offers a reasonable return policy, then 4 is fine, but if he was just misrepresenting the product so he could ask for more money, he doesn't deserve good ratings.

>if that's your only gripe with swapping the keyboard.
Nah, that's just the corn on the shit sundae so to say. I had a feeling the XX30 keyboards were even worse than the images made them look; my current keyboard is a shitty chicklet type where nearly every single key is the exact same 5/8" by 5/8" square flat piece of shit, but at least the PrtScr key is in the upper right where it should be and it still has a Pause/Brk key. Thank you for letting me know just how bad it really is.
>do some more searching
>"The new silkscreening on new model ThinkPads do not list four keyboard shortcut functions (Break, SysRq, ScrLK, Pause). The embedded keypad functionality has been removed from the T430, T430s and T530 systems."
Well, that just sold me on the XX20 keyboard no matter what system I buy. Does the fn+ctrl numberpad of the 20 work when you retrofit it into the 30 and reflash the BIOS? If so that seems like a good enough reason to go for the T430/530 and retrofit the non-shit keyboard in. Now just to decide between the T4 and T5 and all the fun research that comes with those.

t530.
Bigger screen=> ease of programming
Larger surface=> lesser heat, better cpu performance and life
dedicated Graphics card=> play games that hd 4000 will not

only cons are the battery life and the weight(which should be manageable if you are not a manlet).
overall, it's a good long term investment

256 gb lite-on msata for 47$. Is that a good price?
It's manufactured in april 2017 so I don't think the wear level is high

>>
>>68858728
What war?
>>
>>68859721
The war that Lenovo waged when they released the xx40 thinkpads
>>
>>68859769
IBM started it when they sold the brand. It's been a war of attrition against their own users.

I got the latest on as a gray import. No tax on it so I shaved of a considerable amount from the price. I love it.

What's with this? Been happening on /csg/ and we got a brief spurt of this autism in /hpg/ too.

how do you lunatics survive without a numpad
>>
>>68868422
>he can't type the number row without looking

oof
>>
>>68868422
I am a lefty so the numpad has been useless for me since I began using computers.
>>
>>68869288
Are you serious? You type with both hands, right? You've had years (I assume) to learn to use the numpad with your right hand. I'm a righty and I'd honestly prefer to have it on the left
>>
>>68869385
Well yes, I do type with my both hands and I feel like typing numbers with eight fingers instead of only three, which is what most people using the numpad do.
>>
>>68870706
Don't be retarded, you know exactly what I meant.. If you can type with your right then you should be able to use a fucking numpad with it.
>>
>>68868376
batteries cells are used up since you werent charging it. you fucked up
