I use a Lenoge replacement battery in one Thinkpad because I haven't found orig Lenovo ones, it works, not as good as Lenovo ones but it gets the job done just fine and is way Cheaper then a original Lenovo

seriously it is. And another thing that blows my mind is how future proof the t430/x230/etc are. No one can predict paradigm shifts/web 4.0 but if things progress smoothly with an emphasis on backwards compatibility I see no reason to upgrade from this generation of thinkpads for a while.

rather general use (web, email, music, porn) still needs to target the celeron n4000 and all the other garbage chips they still put in walmart-special-tier craptops today, so we don't need to worry until a few years after the lowest common denominator reaches parity with our poorpads

>>
>>68789592
T430s is kinda fine. I'd look for one with the higher resolution screen or plan on swapping one in. 14" is a good size unless you're like me and fall in love with the tiny ones. The other two are overpriced for ebay but about what you'd expect for a refurb from a retailer. Look at the elitebooks and latitudes too. They've got 14" models that you might find cheaper, but the clit mice aren't as good.
>>
>>68789592
>>68789772
Oh wait, I just noticed the 430 is a 430s. Those ones have soldered CPUs don't they?
>>
>>68789592
Adding on to my comment, get one with an ivy bridge CPU (3xxx) so you have a USB 3.0 port. The x220/t420 models had one but only if you get the i7 version which still commands a higher price than the i5. Unfortunately you'll be stuck with the chicklet keyboard, but you can either mod the older one back in or deal with it.

>>68789816
Yes but it shouldn't be a huge dealbreaker. Just look for the one with the cpu you want.

thinkpad w520 finally arrived. This keyboard is fucking orgasmic
>>
>>68789346
It actually unironically is though. For £100 I paid for it and then £50 to repair and upgrade it to 12gb DDR4 Ram, 500gb SSD and 1tb HDD, and is 1080p.
Keyboard is decent, trackpad is large and has good action. USB 3.0 ports, a 3.1 type C, light and thin and sleek and incredibly cool to the touch. It's got BT.
I got some old Dell business laptops with 2nd gen i5s in, and an old Acer 5755g with a 2670QM and GT 630M.
Unfortunately the Acer, despite having a great CPU hasn't held up very well in every other area. It really struggles with Windows and Linux when I reinstalled fresh OS' on it to test. Can't believe I paid £700 for it back in 2012. It only ever really worked with Windows 7. It was literally the only half decent laptop I could get back then. The battery was shot on it too and I had to get a 3rd party battery. Which gave me like 1 and a half hours of battery life instead of 1 from the roach'd stock battery. (At best it only ever got 3 hours max though) It has a habit of overheating despite having fresh thermal compound. I really did try to fix it.
The old Dell Inspiron laptops we literally found in the trash work better and still have 2 hour battery life.
Can't play videos for shit though and the RAM in them is pretty slow.
A weak modern processor usually has decent hardware-based playback and general efficiency gains.
Still I might get a Thinkpad at some point too though. My friend had an old entry-level one with a GMA 950. It was kind of crappy but we used it on the go for years. It survived everything. At one point my friend had to hold it all together with a metal clamp since the plastic was literally disintegrating and of course it could never be folded up but he still used it for another two years before he retired the old thing, so I understand the appeal of them.
This lappy is just something I threw together quickly to take around. If it breaks I won't get to upset over it. A thinkpad dying is a tragedy. An Ideapad? Eh.

Honestly it isn't even the keyboard. I have an X230 and swapped the keyboard to the X220 one and honestly in hindsight the X230 keyboard feels pretty great, in fact the tactile typing itself is probably firmer than the X220's. Just the layout is a bit suboptimal.

No, the reason the X230 gets more favored these days is that it's currently the cheapest bang-for-your-buck model. It's the X220 with slightly better hardware. You're also starting to see a lot of love in these threads for things like the T440p for the same reason even though the 4th gen Core thinkpads were universally hated.

I can upgrade my X230 to a i7-3612QE for about 320 euro (buying an x230 motherboard with said CPU) is that worth it?
I can probably ask the chinks to solder a pcb for 1080p/1440p displays as well so I don't have to fuckup my new motherboard myself.
>>
>>68793924
Overheating is my guess. I had the same issue with my GPD Win when it engaged its turbo. Got hot and the keypad stopped being responsive.
I fixed it by disabling the turbo by setting the max CPU clock to 99% in the battery settings.
>>
yo blud i found a thinkpad 2374 how much they sell for?
>>
>>68790340
If you want something to use as a tablet as well grab a chink tablet with a 7Y30 in it. 8gb ram if possible and a 128gb M.2 SSD. Then get its keyboard dock.
The trackpad will likely be pretty bad though, but its somewhat fixable with some software tweaking. It shouldn't cost too much, and it will be small and perform as well as an older entry level surface but much cheaper.
An N4200 celeron is about as low as anyone should ever go for a Windows PC now. I have a Celeron N3450 in a tablet and it struggles (mostly because its resolution is 3000x2000 by default. But I usually half it when not watching videos and its OK).
>>
>>68795513

No, paying that much pretty much defeats the foundation this general stands on. An excellent laptop at an affordable price. Your essentially overpaying just to keep an old chassis at that point.

I mean it's your money do what you want, but that money is probably better spent somewhere else.
>>
>>68795777
Money is the issue yeah, I bought this X230 for 125 euro (then added an SSD and 4GB more RAM) but in my opinion this is the best small notebook out there and I want to keep it as long as possible. I'm also planning on getting an 1080p panel for it.
Right now the i5-3320M is sufficient but I'm a little worried about the future.
>>
>>68795793

I get what you mean, I feel pretty similar about my x230 and w520.

My recommendation is to wait and see if the chinks at 51nb ever release a board with an 8th Gen cpu or better. They'd blow any ivy bridge out of the water.

1080p/1440p might be worth looking into.

>>
>>68796389
From my experience with my 8560p, they aren't bad machines. Their trackpoints and keyboards are nowhere near as good as a Thinkpad's but they work.
If you can get a Thinkpad for the same price I would recommend one over an Elitebook, but if the Elitebook is significantly cheaper, go for that.
>>
I'm lazy, what's the max drive height for an X230?
>>
>>68796464
Thanks. The Elitebook is similarly priced but looked a little better on paper.
I'm more concerned with usability for a word processing machine though
>>
>>68788959
x230 is the better choice if you dont have a strong preference for the old keyboard or are able to do te ekyboard mod.

Biggest issue with both machines is that if you use any kind of videos or even some animations, the battery life goes down drastically.

my mom spilled water over her x201, I luckily was nearby to quickly shut down and remove battery. After drying for a bit I took a look inside making sure not to move any water around. It seemed to all have gone in the channel and not have touched any of the internals. After more drying and assembly I powered the machine and it seemed to work fine.

Next day mom calls me that she tried to turn it on again and it only shows indicator lights when pressing power button but no screen. battery and power indicators remain on but shut down after a while.

>>
>>68796828

When I first got my x230 I used the stock keyboard for a few months before swapping it, and honestly the new chiclet keyboard is not that bad. It's still better than every other laptop keyboard that isn't the old x220 keyboard. What is better on the older keyboard is definetly the layout.

If you don't want to swap the keyboard, the new keyboard is still pretty good. Only thing I do reccomend is choosing the non-backlit version. The backlit version of the new keyboard is glossier than the standard version and tend to pick up oil more.
>>
>>68798900
just get a thinkpad and buy a US keyboard for it

>>

For older models it's usually just a couple of screws. New models are a bit more of a pain but just consult the hardware maintenance manual for whichever model if you're unsure.

The problem is the screen is tiny, I had an x220, and thereafter x230 and I eventually became completely sick of the tiny screen. Too small to watch video or type a document on one side of the screen with reference material on the other. Somewhere between 13" and 14" is the perfect laptop screen size. A good quality matte 1080p IPS screen just makes the whole user experience so much better. I moved to an X301 and thereafter got a cheap e7440 too (which developed egregious reliability issues) and now my goal is to eventually end up with a t450s - one with a 940m would be really nice but they're very rare.

what chinkpad would replace my retina macbook pro 2015? i hate OS X more and more with each update

something similar in size, battery performance (easy peasy 8h+ hours), and screen that can run linux with no abysmal driver issues (i don't mind proprietary), don't mind soldered ram either

as for the screen, high dpi seems to be garbage on linux still so maybe 1080 would be great, though what would be amazing is a 16:10 screen like the mbp

don't mind newer keyboards, and performance should be similar (5th or 6th gen i5-like)

options? budget is >1000 && <2000

Since replacing the HDD/SSD of thinkpads is so fast and easy.
Is it feasible to get small sized SSD?
Something around 64GB, that why I can swap between windows to GNU/Linux without worrying about dual booting or VM.
And can have multiple SSDs for different tasks.
Anyone tried this before?
>>
>>68802229
it would work. if you have a particular hatred for boot managers why not get a thinkpad you can put 2 drives in and just use the bios' boot list
>>
>>68802288
Because I have X220, so no optical drive.
And I don't want to get mSATA SSD.
And that way I can have this set up
>Windows SSD
For work, since I'm required to use some windows only applications that doesn't run in WINE.
And keep all of my work related stuff on it.
>Debian with XFCE SSD
For my personal use, including my weeb ricing.
>MacOS SSD
For hackintosh and messing with applefags in coffe shops
>OpenELEC SSD
For Home theater purposes.
Or something like that, Since these SSD are cheap like 20$ each. I thought it worth looking into it.

If you hate chicklet keys and are willing to shave the extended parts off just to get it in, then it is worth it. By the way it's like $25 if you look on ebay. REFER TO THE THINKWIKI BEFORE DOING IT. You will need to flash your BIOS to get the top row of keys working.
>>
>>68807378

>>68807387
I tried the X220 palmrest swap. While it works, I found it was just slightly misaligned on the X230 to be sharp and uncomfortable in some areas or leave gaps (such as the little groove on the front for opening the lid, and the front corners). However it is also possible I got a shitty knockoff brand palmrest instead of a real OEM X220 one.

I ended up putting the X230 palmrest back on and cutting the keyboard tab slots on it a little bigger with an exacto knife.

I have an X230 with the X220 keyboard swap, but in hindsight if I knew how it would feel I probably wouldn't have bothered. Having the extra row of keys is nice but typing itself feels mushier on the X220 keyboard compared to the X230 one.

It does however let you swap the Fn/Ctrl keycaps in a pretty unobtrusive way if you get an extra Right Ctrl keycap.
>>
>>68807468
The space between the chicklet keys and the hardness of the keys really highlights how cheap and uncomfortable they are. I will always go back to the original keyboard since I memorized the layout and overall enjoy using it more.

>>
>>68794899
Saying that the X230 keyboard was "fine" when it came out was pretty much heresy around here, but I always thought so. The thing that worried me is that is heralded the increase Apple-fication of the Thinkpad line, and that is exactly what happened. The new keyboards are fine in terms of tactile feel, they just suck in terms of layout. And the overall build quality is a piece of shit compared to the xx20 / xx30 days.
>>
>>68807504
I've been using Thinkpads since the T60 but I disagree. I really do find the chiclet board to be more comfortable to type on than the X220 one. The X220 board is a lot mushier feeling than T60 also. Not enough of the classic feel for me to think it was a significant improvement.

>>
>>68807530
>The X220 board is a lot mushier feeling than T60 also
There is actually some variation among the keyboards. Lenovo generally sources the switches from ALPS, Chicony or NMB. Chicony keyboards are nice when new but some of them get mushy over time, so it's sort of hit or miss with them. ALPS are just pure trash; mushy feeling yet lots of top end resistance, inconsistent feel, fail to register keystrokes, don't know why Lenovo still uses them because they've been shit since at least 2008. NMB has the highest quality, they have a nice consistent and firm feel to them with very little wobble. So the X220 you own might have either an ALPS keyboard or a worn out Chicony keyboard. Either way, try replacing them with an NMB.
>>
>>68807830
I specifically got the NMB one.
>>
>>68807856
Welp, can't help you there. I disagree that the NMB keyboard feels "mushy", to me it's just as crisp (if not moreso) as the "old" steel-backplate keyboard that I had in my T60p. Chalk it down to personal preference.

I'm actually gonna side with >>68811631 - if this isn't your only computer then it's probably better for you to save the cash. I know most people have zero savings and this ain't /lifeadvicegeneral/ but a couple hundred bucks in your pocket adds up over time and having at least something in the bank sure beats ricing a chinkpad.
If it's replacing a broken/dying machine or something else, then it sounds like you already know what you're looking for. Since you can't inspect ebay shit in person, you're taking most of this shit at their word and rolling the dice. If things look too good to be true then they probably are, for instance this anon >>68813290 doesn't realize there are egg sacs full of baby spiders waiting to hatch inside his new machines.

When I bought the seller told me it has BT, After I got it I noticed there's no BT connectivity, so I've contacted him but he told me all models of T420 have one and I just have issues with drivers and I should use Win10 or something.
And I shouldn't try to scam him to return my money.
Where should the BT card go?

What are you talking about? He told you that it has Bluetooth but it doesn't, and you think YOU'RE the one that's a scammer? Get yourself together, jeez. Send him official documentation of the fact that not all T420 models have Bluetooth. Look at the status LEDs next to the model # beneath the screen, if there's a third one for BT then your model should have Bluetooth. Pic related is mine without BT, and here's a pic I found of one with BT: https://tshop.r10s.com/cee/40b/22c8/dd67/01cc/ba70/8b96/11b9e7afce2c600c737667.jpg

If yours doesn't have the icon, that guy should at least be giving you a partial refund to cover the cost of a Bluetooth card.

haters gonna hate but I think they're pretty good, don't expect good value for the money though as they're still really expensive, most notable models are t480/t480s/x1c6/x1 extreme/p1/p52/p72

if you're in the states you can actually bring a civil case against him if he doesn't cough up the cash to cover one since he sold it under the belief that it did have one
don't open with threatening him with this of course, but if he gets hostile when you explain that it doesn't have BT and why, and he tries to terminate the conversation, providing him with the knowledge you could sue his ass might change his tune
most people will go with it because court fees are generally around 500 bucks minimum depending on where you are

Why the would you bother going through the bother and expense to do this? If he's going to be that much of a prick then fuck him, just complain to PayPal, eBay or cancel the charge on your credit card to get your money back. Even suggesting this is so faux-lawyer autistic it just beggars belief.

thats the whole point genius, it's a threat, not something you're going to follow through with. did you even fucking read the post?
feel free to issue a chargeback instead and potentially get your name/credit card blacklisted on ebay if the merchant is high-volume and fights it, or bring in paypal to mediate which is surely much less of a hassle than just letting the guy know that you could sue him for falsely advertising his product
how did you not discern the message behind that post? jesus christ you're thick

i know this isn 't a high end laptop, but the charging pin in my Hewlett-Packard X0S22UA charger got bent when I accidentally tried to put it in my Toshiba

How do I straighten it out? the cylinder it's in is so small in diameter that only a staple can get under it, but it doesn't have the force to bend it back, it just bends itself.

Do I absolutely have to buy a new charger? it still charges, but it doesn't go in all the way and I kinda have to hold it in

While I could buy a laptop with better specs for the same price.
